Abstract:One of the most serious bottleneck on achieving kilojoule-level high-energy petawatt (PW) to hundreds-petawatt (100PW) lasers with ps to fs pulse duration is the requirement of as large as meter-sized gratings in the compressor so as to avoid the laser-induced damage to the gratings. However, this kind of meter-sized grating with high quality is hard to manufacture so far. Here, we propose a new in-house beam-splitting compressor based on the property that the damage threshold of gratings depend on the pulse duration. The new scheme will simultaneously improve the stability, save expensive gratings, and simplify the size of compressor because the split beams share the first two parallel gratings. Furthermore, based on the fact that the transmitted wavefront of a glass plate can be much better and more precisely controlled than that of the diffraction wavefront of a large grating, then glass plates with designed transmitted wavefront are proposed to compensate the wavefront distortion introduced by the second, the third gratings, and other optics in-house such as the beam splitter. This simple and economical method can compensate the space-time distortion in the compressor and then improve the focal intensity, which otherwise cannot be compensated by the deformable mirror outside the compressor due to angular chirp. Together with multi-beams tiled-aperture combining scheme, the novel compressor provides a new scheme to achieve high-energy PW-100PW lasers or even exawatt lasers with relatively small gratings in the future.

Abstract:High-energy tens (10s) to hundreds (100s) petawatt (PW) lasers are key tools for exploring frontier fundamental researches such as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED), and the generation of positron-electron pair from vacuum. Recently, pulse compressor became the main obstacle on achieving higher peak power due to the limitation of damage threshold and size of diffraction gratings. Here, we propose a feasible multistep pulse compressor (MPC) to increase the maximum bearable input and output pulse energies through modifying their spatiotemporal properties. Typically, the new MPC including a prism pair for pre-compression, a four-grating compressor (FGC) for main compression, and a spatiotemporal focusing based self-compressor for post-compression. The prism pair can induce spatial dispersion to smooth and enlarge the laser beam, which increase the maximum input and output pulse energies. As a result, as high as 100 PW laser with single beam or more than 150 PW through combining two beams can be obtained by using MPC and current available optics. This new optical design will simplify the compressor, improve the stability, and save expensive gratings/optics simultaneously. Together with the multi-beam tiled-aperture combining method, the tiled-grating method, larger gratings, or negative chirp pulse based self-compression method, several 100s PW laser beam is expected to be obtained by using this MPC method in the future, which will further extend the ultra-intense laser physics research fields.

Abstract:A multistage smoothing multistep pulse compressor (MPC) based on a single-pass single-grating-pair (SSGP) main compressor is proposed to simplify the entire petawatt (PW) compressor. Only one grating pair with relatively long distance is used to generate the same amount of spectral dispersion in the main compressor compared with a four-grating main compressor. As the SSGP induces the largest spatial dispersion, it can introduce the best beam-smoothing effect to the laser beam on the last grating. When considering the diffraction loss of only two gratings, the total compression efficiency of the SSGP main compressor is even larger than that of a four-grating main compressor. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal aberration induced by single-grating-pair can be compensated effectively by using deformable mirrors, however it is difficult or complicated to be well compensated in a four-grating compressor. Approximately 50-100 PW laser pulses can be obtained using this SSGP-based multistage smoothing MPC with a single laser beam
New grating compressor designs for XCELS and SEL-100 PW projects

Abstract:The problem of optimizing the parameters of a laser pulse compressor consisting of four identical diffraction gratings is solved analytically. The goal of optimization is to obtain maximum pulse power, completely excluding both beam clipping on gratings and the appearance of spurious diffraction orders. The analysis is carried out in a general form for an out-of-plane compressor. Two particular plane cases attractive from a practical point of view are analyzed in more detail: a standard Treacy compressor (TC) and a compressor with an angle of incidence equal to the Littrow angle (LC). It is shown that in both cases the LC is superior to the TC. Specifically, for 160-cm diffraction gratings, optimal LC design enables 109 PW for XCELS and 115 PW for SEL-100 PW, while optimal TC design enables 86 PW for both projects.

Abstract:We designed a pulse compressor for S-band highpower test stand at Tsinghua University. This pulse compressor is made up of a spherical resonant cavity with quality factor of 100,000 and an RF polarizer. It has the ability of compressing a pulse from 3.6 us to 300 ns with the power gain of 7. A short description of the pulse compressor is presented, together with the RF design.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated an S-band compact pulse compressor with a single spherical resonant cavity and an RF polarizer for the S-band high power test facility at Tsinghua University. The average power gain of the pulse compressor was optimized to 5.2 with input pulse length of 3.6 μs and a compression ratio of 12. This pulse compressor will replace the existing SLED-type pulse compressor with two cylinder resonant cavities, which makes the RF system of the high-power test facility compact. The RF design, mechanical design and cold test of the pulse compressor are presented in this paper.

Abstract:An X-band, high-power pulse compressor, which can produce a flat pulse and a power gain of 4.3, has been designed. The device is compact, with the dimensions of within 1m, and is designed for CLIC first energy stage based on klystrons. We also discuss about a two stage pulse compressor with power gain of 9.18, which may be a candidate of the X-FEL using CLIC X-band linacs and klystrons with low peak power.

Abstract:The laser-induced damage observed in optics has rendered compressor gratings the most limited component of petawatt (PW) lasers, owing to the considerable challenges associated with manufacturing gratings possessing both a sufficiently high damage threshold and large dimensions. An asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) based multistep pulse compressor method was proposed recently to alleviate the requirement of such gratings. The viability of AFGC is further investigated experimentally in SEL-100 PW frontend with spectral bandwidth of over 200 nm in this study. It is verified that the AFGC has the ability of beam-smoothing resulting from the introduced spatial dispersion. Meanwhile, the spatial dispersion scarcely impacts temporal contrast and focal spot of the output beam. By reducing the laser spatial intensity modulations from 2.0 to 1.3, the pulse energy capacity of the AFGC can increase more than 1.5 times through simple translation. The results mark a breakthrough toward experimentally renovating the grating compressor, and pave the way for a reliable and efficient constructions of 100 s PW lasers.

Abstract:A radio frequency (RF) pulse compressor had been designed for the X-band (11.424 GHz) high power test stands at the Accelerator Laboratory of Tsinghua University. It is a SLED-I type pulse compressor, which uses a high quality factor corrugated circular cavity to store the RF power. An RF polarizer couples two quadrature modes into the cavity so that the pulse compressor needs only one cavity. The cavity implements HE1-1-14 mode, with the Q0 of 115,000 and the coupling factor ( ) of 3.23. The design and the microwave measurement before brazing of this pulse compressor are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION RF pulse compressors enhance the RF peak power at the expense of shortening pulse widths. Passive pulse compressors, rather than active ones, have been widely used due to better stability and easier fabrication. The SLAC energy doubler (SLED-I), the resonant delay line pulse compressor (SLED-II) and the barrel open cavity (BOC) have been proposed and developed as three main types of passive pulse compression systems with different RF components. The SLED-I and SLED-II store the RF pulse in a resonant cavity or a delay line and output a decaying exponential or a flat pulse respectively, while the BOC type houses a whispering galley mode of high unloaded quality factor (Q0) in a more complicated cavity structure [1-3]. Typical pulse compression systems consist of two identical cavities or delay lines and a 3-dB coupler for isolation. A compact RF pulse compression system with one spherical cavity and an RF polarizer has been designed and tested at SLAC [4]. At Tsinghua University, the Tsinghua Thomson-scattering X-ray Source (TTX) upgrade project plans to add two X-band linacs in the injector and boost the electron beam from the current 50 MeV to 150 MeV, as shown in Fig. 1. To feed these two structures, a SLED-I type pulse compressor is required to compress the pulse width from 1.5 μs to 100 ns and generate more than 250 MW peak power from a 50 MW klystron at the frequency of 11.424 GHz.

Abstract:An X-band (11.424 GHz) high-power RF station is being built for Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray Source (TTX). The station aims to feed several X-band accelerating structures working at a high gradient of 80 MV/m. An X-band pulse compressor is designed to compress the RF pulse from 1.5 us to 100 ns and to generate more than 250 MW peak power from a 50MW klystron. This pulse compressor implements a resonate cavity housing the HE11-mode as the energy storage cavity, with a high quality factor Q of more than 10⁵. The detailed design of the high-Q cavity as well as the dedicate couplers of this pulse compressor are present in this work.

Abstract:A petawatt laser facility with three beams for fast ignition research and strong-field physics applications has been designed and is being constructed. The first beam (referred as SILEX-I) is a Ti:sapphire femto-second laser which pulse width is 30 fs, and till now, output power has reached to 330 TW. The other two beams are Nd3+:glass lasers which output energy are larger than 1kJ and pulse width are about 1ps and 1ns respectively. By using the technology of OPA pumped by 800nm femtosecond laser and seeded by super-continuum spectrum white light, the three beams are synchronized with each other without jitter time. By using the seeds from OPA pumped by femtosecond laser, and by using the pre-amplification stage of OPCPA, the signal to noise ratio of the Nd3+:glass petawatt laser will reach to 108. Active methods are taken to control the gain narrowing effect of the Nd3+:glass amplifiers, giving the option to compress the chirped pulse to ultrashort pulse with width less than 400fs. Tiled multilayer dielectric coating gratings are used for the compressor of the PW beam, which has been successfully demonstrated on a 100J picosecond Nd3+:glass laser system.

Abstract:The laser energy will be increased substantially when the Shenguang-II laser facility upgrade is completed and the petawatt picosecond laser beam will be equipped at the same time. For the fast ignition approach, direct-drive implosions have some advantages over indirect-drive ones, such as higher energy efficiency and lower mixing of cone material into fuel. Based on Shenguang-II upgraded laser facility, integrated direct-drive fast ignition experiments will be carried out and it will contribute to the further understanding of the relevant physics such as integrated coupling efficiency. The radiation hydrodynamic code Multi1D is used to design fast-ignition targets, and the optimized target parameters are achieved. The optimized target has a relatively thick wall (35 μm) and 420 μm-outer-radius CH shell, which are consistent with the scaling laws in target design. The deposition in the optimization target of the hot electrons generated by the picosecond petawatt pulse is also calculated according to the hot electrons scaling relation. The results show that the achieved areal density is high enough to stop the hot electrons.

Abstract:It is proposed a new method of compressing laser pulse by fast extending plasma gratings(FEPG), which is created by ionizing the hypersound wave generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering(SBS) in the background gas. Ionized by a short laser pulse, the phonon forms a light-velocity FEPG to fully reflect a resonant pump laser. As the reflecting surface moves with a light velocity, the reflected pulse is temporally overlapped and compressed. This regime is supported by the simulation results of a fully kinetic particle-in-cell(PIC) code Opic with a laser wavelength of 1um, displaying a pump pulse is compressed from 13ps to a few cycles(7.2fs), with an efficiency close to 80%. It is a promising method to produce critical laser powers due to several features: high efficiency without a linear stage, robustness to plasma instabilities, no seed and a wide range of pump intensity.

A novel small-scale self-focusing suppression method for ultrahigh peak power lasers

Abstract:We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

Abstract:Laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) using PW-class laser pulses generally requires cm-scale laser-plasma interaction Rayleigh length, which can be realized by focusing such pulses inside a long underdense plasma with a large f-number focusing optic. Here, we present a new PW-based LWFA instrument at the SG-II 5 PW laser facility, which employs f/23 focusing. The setup also adapted an online probing of the plasma density via Nomarski interferometry using a probe laser beam having 30 fs pulse duration. By focusing 1-PW, 30-fs laser pulses down to a focal spot of 230 µm, the peak laser intensity reached a mild-relativistic level of 2.6 × 1018 W/cm2, a level modest for standard LWFA experiments. Despite the large aspect ratio of >25:1 (transverse to longitudinal dimensions) of the laser pulse, electron beams were observed in our experiment only when the laser pulse experienced relativistic self-focusing at high gas-pressure thresholds, corresponding to plasma densities higher than 3 × 1018 cm-3.

Abstract:A pulsed intense magnetic field device was developed for the Shanghai Shenguang-II (SG-II) laser facility. The device using a double-turn coil with 12 mm diameter is capable of producing a peak current of 42 kA with 280 ns rising edge and 200 ns flat top width. A peak magnetic field of 8.8 T is achieved at the center of the coil. A two-section transmission line composed by a flexible section and a rigid section is designed to meet the target chamber environment of SG-II laser facility. The flexible section realizes the soft-connection between the capacitor bank and the target chamber, which facilitates the installation of the magnetic field device and the adjustment of the coil. The rigid section is as small as possible so that it can be inserted into the target chamber from any smallest flange, realizing elastic magnetic field configuration. The magnetic coil inside the chamber can be adjusted finely through a mechanical component on the rigid transmission line outside the target chamber. The adjustment range is up to 5 cm in both radial and axial directions with ∼50 µm precision. The device has been successfully operated on SG-II laser facility.

Abstract:To avoid damage in high-power laser systems, a chirped plasma-based grating is proposed for compressing laser pulses that have been previously stretched and amplified. This chirped grating is generated through the interaction of chirped pump laser pulses in a plasma slab. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations demonstrate that the grating exists for a duration sufficient to be utilized in the final chirped pulse amplification (CPA) stage. The generation of the grating is quite flexible, as several parameters can be adjusted, such as plasma density, chirp, length, and intensity of the pump laser. To begin, the structure of the grating is analyzed in terms of ponderomotive effects of the pump laser pulses. The primary application of the chirped plasma-based grating lies in compressing laser pulses to large amplitudes and short durations after they have been stretched and amplified beforehand. The compression factor is explored in connection with potential grating parameters. Reflectivity and effective bandwidth of chirped plasma gratings are parameters to be optimized. However, the grating spectral bandwidth can only be increased at the expense of reflectivity. The PIC results are made understandable through model calculations based on coupled mode equations.

Abstract:0.1 TW pulsed power generator (PPG-I) constructed for the research on X-pinch and Z-pinch was tested. The generator is composed of a 1.2 MV Marx generator with sixteen 0.65-μF capacitors charged to 75 kV in parallel and then erected in series, a 1.25 Ω pulse forming line (PFL) using distilled water as insulation, a V/N spark switch filled with pressurized SF6 gas, a 1.25 Ω pulse transmission line (PTL) using also distilled water as insulation and a 1.25-Ohm pseudo-load made of CuSO4 solution. It is found that the output voltage of PPG-I is influenced by the pressure of SF6 filled in the auxiliary gap of the V/N switch when the SF6 pressure of main gap keeps at 4.6 atm. If SF6 pressure in the auxiliary gap is 2.7 atm, the auxiliary gap will first self-break down at the time when the PFL is charged to a voltage of 1.1 MV, near its maximum charging voltage, causing multi-channel discharge in the main gap. In this case, the output voltage with a 1.25 ohm matching load is a square-wave with 470 kV in amplitude, 30 ns in risetime and 110 ns in FWHM. If SF6 pressure in the auxiliary gap rises to 3.4 atm, the auxiliary gap will not break down and the main gap breaks down with only one discharge channel when the PFL is charged to 1.1 MV. In this case, the output voltage of 440 kV in amplitude rises much more slowly with a risetime of 70 ns and without a flat top. It is concluded that the output voltage pulse from PPG-1 is suitable for driving X-pinch and Z-pinch load when the V/N switch works in multi-channel discharge mode.
