Abstract:Abstract Coupling effects of fretting wear and cyclic stress could result in significant fatigue strength degradation, thus potentially causing unanticipated catastrophic fractures. The underlying mechanism of microstructural evolutions caused by fretting wear is ambiguous, which obstructs the understanding of fretting fatigue issues, and is unable to guarantee the reliability of structures for long-term operation. Here, fretting wear studies were performed to understand the microstructural evolution and oxidation behavior of an α/β titanium alloy up to 10 8 cycles. Contact surface degradation is mainly caused by surface oxidation and the generation of wear debris during fretting wear within the slip zone. The grain size in the topmost nanostructured layer could be refined to ∼40 nm. The grain refinement process involves the initial grain rotation, the formation of low angle grain boundary (LAGB; 2°–5°), the in-situ increments of the misorientation angle, and the final subdivision, which have been unraveled to feature the evolution in dislocation morphologies from slip lines to tangles and arrays. The formation of hetero microstructures regarding the nonequilibrium high angle grain boundary (HAGB) and dislocation arrays gives rise to more oxygen diffusion pathways in the topmost nanostructured layer, thus resulting in the formation of cracking interface to separate the oxidation zone and the adjoining nanostructured domain driven by tribological fatigue stress. Eventually, it facilitates surface degradation and the formation of catastrophic fractures.

Abstract:A systematic experimental investigation concerning the fretting-induced tribo-chemical state and its effect on the fretting wear behavior of titanium alloys under the vacuum atmospheres (4 × 10 –3 Pa and 4 × 10 –1 Pa) in different fretting regimes is reported. An in situ XPS analysis tester was developed to capture the real tribo-chemical state of worn surface for all test conditions. Results show that samples subjected to different vacuum atmospheres have varied tribo-chemical states depending on the fretting regime, which play significantly different roles in determining the associated damage mechanisms and the resulting fretting wear resistance. Under both vacuum atmospheres, in the partial slip regime (PSR) the worn scars were mainly covered by TiO 2 , showing comparable levels of very slight damage, while in the mixed fretting regime (MFR), the tribo-layer is still mainly consisted of TiO 2 , but with an evident peak of Ti metal for the high vacuum degree (4 × 10 –3 Pa) in MFR, showing a mild damage. In contrast, in the gross slip regime (GSR), Ti metal was prone to be oxidized to Ti 2 O 3 and TiO on the worn scar, especially for the low vacuum degree (4 × 10 –1 Pa) having a highest content of Ti 2 O 3 . It might be inferred that the tribo-layer containing more Ti 2 O 3 formed during fretting wear process is susceptible to be broken, hence showing a highest fretting wear volume in GSR for the low vacuum degree. The results suggest that for the vacuum environments, the Ti6Al4V may be more suitable to be used under the high vacuum atmosphere.

Abstract:The fretting behaviors of a metastable β titanium alloy with three kinds of microstructures were studied. Special attentions have been paid to the underlying wear mechanism mediated by fretting conditions and microstructural features. The wear volume is more sensitive to the stroke amplitude rather than the normal loading. The mixed abrasive-adhesive wear is dominated in all fretting samples. The microstructural features make a significant contribution to the difference in the wear resistance and subsurface microstructure stability. Due to a large difference in the grain size and the ability of plastic deformation in adjacent grains, the SM (single-phase microstructure) sample is more favorable to initiation and propagation of cracks. The DM (duplex microstructure) and BM (basketweave microstructure) samples, however, have a high resistance ability to fretting wear and subsurface microstructure stability. This can be attributed to the large amounts of the β/α interfaces and the dispersed orientation distribution of α precipitates. The present work offers valuable experimental data for the prediction of fatigue life after fretting.

Preparation and Study on Fretting Tribological Behavior of Composite Lubrication Structure on the Titanium Alloy Surface

Abstract:As an excellent light metal material, titanium alloy has an important application in high technology equipment. In this study, the composite lubrication structure was prepared on the titanium alloy surface by combining the surface texture, thermal oxidation layer, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based lubricating coating. The effect of texture parameters and thermal oxidation layer on the fretting wear behavior of the composite lubrication structure was evaluated under a load of 50 N. The results showed that the PTFE-based lubricating coating on the textured surface showed excellent friction-reduction and anti-wear effect compared with the coating on the single smooth surface and thermal oxidation surface. The introduction of a thermal oxidation layer on the textured surface further improved the fretting wear life of lubrication coating. The friction coefficient and wear rate can be as low as 0.242 and 2.3 × 10−5 mm3·N−1m−1, respectively, under dry fretting contact conditions. Compared with the untextured surface, the longevity of the composite lubrication structure is extended by more than 90%.

Abstract:To simulate the variational working conditions of the titanium fastener in the aero-engine, variable cycle fretting wear tests were carried out for normal loading (80/40 N), frequency (100/30 Hz), displacement amplitude (80/40μm) and operating temperature (500/350°C) in a self-lubricating composite coating on TC21 titanium alloy substrate, and the fretting wear behavior and wear mechanism were thoroughly investigated. The results shows that the coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear volume present a significant difference under variable cycle fretting conditions. The specimen exhibits a relatively stable COF under variable operating temperature. Whereas for the specimen under variable displacement amplitude presents a lowest wear volume. The adhesive wear is mainly found in the specimens under variable normal loading and frequency. Whereas for the specimens under variable displacement amplitude and operating temperature, abrasive wear and oxidation wear is mainly dominated, respectively. The dissipated energy calculation results demonstrate that the variable displacement amplitude and operating temperature have greater impact on the fretting wear behavior. The microstructure analysis in the cross-section of specimens reveals that the sub-surface is composed of amorphous-nano crystalline layer, plastic deformation layer and the origin coating. Additionally, the wear mechanism of the specimens under variable fretting conditions were deeply revealed. This work can provide essential information on fretting behavior and mechanism under the variational working conditions.

Abstract:Fretting wear damage of high-strength titanium fasteners has caused a large number of disastrous accidents. Traditionally, it is believed that both high strength and excellent ductility can reduce fretting wear damage. However, whether strength and ductility are contradictory or not and their appropriate matching strategy under the external applied normal stress ( F w ) are still confusing problems. Here, by analyzing the subsurface-microstructure deformation mechanism of several samples containing various α precipitate features, for the first time, we design strategies to improve fretting damage resistance under different matching relation between F w and the tensile strength of materials ( R m ). It is found that when F w is greater than R m or F w is nearly equivalent to R m , the deformation mechanism mainly manifests as serious grain fragmentation of β and α GB constituents. Homogeneous deformation in large areas only reduces damage to a limited extent. It is crucial to improve the strength to resist cracking and wear, but it is of little significance to improve the ductility. However, when F w is far less than R m , coordinated deformation ability reflected by ductility plays a more important role. The deformation mechanism mainly manifests as localized deformation of β and α GB constituents (kinking induced by twinning and spheroidizing). A unique composite structure of nano-grained/lamellar layer and localized deformation transition layer reduces fretting damage by five times compared with a single nano-grained layer. Only when the strength is great enough, improving the plasticity can reduce wear. This study can provide a principle for designing fretting damage resistant alloys.

Sub-nano to nanometer wear and tribocorrosion of titanium oxide-metal surfaces by in situ atomic force microscopy

Abstract:Wear and tribocorrosion of passive oxide film covered metals have been studied at the micro and macroscopic scales. Recent advances in nanotechnology have contributed to breakthroughs in understanding of fundamental friction and wear mechanisms of atomically thin 2D materials at the nanoscale. However, for metals and materials without ultra-flat surfaces, a gap in knowledge exists at or below a few nanometers, which is too small for continuum mechanics theories and experiments including conventional atomic force microscopy (AFM) methods, due to resolution limits arising from surface roughness. Here, we report the near-atomic-scale wear of titanium in air and physiological solution from a single atomic layer to beyond the full oxide thickness using an AFM-based tribology method. Sub-nano to nanometer wear of titanium was revealed with different stages of contact pressure dependent wear regions identified as wear depth increased, featured by a transition from atomic wear (below 2.4 GPa) to elasto-plastic driven wear (above 3.6 GPa) at its oxide thickness (3.8 nm) in air. Higher stress was required to generate a similar wear penetration process in PBS compared to air. Tribocorrosion at this scale was grain orientation and voltage-dependent. Our study opens up a new method to achieve reliable angstrom-level resolution wear quantification to advance the understanding of wear and tribocorrosion of metals at the nanoscale. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Experimental tests of wear for metallic biomaterials at the nanoscale are difficult because engineered metal surfacesare never perfectly atomically flat, limiting the resolution of precise wear measurements to a few nanometers scale or more. To systematically address this problem, we have introduced the AFM 'image-wear-image' tribology method and obtained quantitative stress dependent measurement of the near-atomic-scale wear of titanium surfaces in air and tribocorrosion in physiological solution from a single atomic layer to beyond the full oxide film thickness. This allowedto measure sub-nano scale wear by partial removal of oxide. Nanoscale wear has been found to be grain orientation-dependent above the 'atomic scale' wear region. The nano-tribocorrosion of CP-Ti across scales and voltage effects on oxides in physiological solution was studied. Our study opens up a new method for future studies to advance the understanding of sub-nanoscale and nanoscale wear and tribocorrosion phenomenon as well as oxide growth mechanism of metallic biomaterials.
Influence of Thermal Oxidation Duration on the Microstructure and Fretting Wear Behavior of Ti6Al4V Alloy

Abstract:Thermal oxidation under water oxidizing atmosphere was performed on Ti6Al4V alloy under different durations from 2 h to 8 h. Surface characterizations were performed using X-ray diffractometery (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, nanoindentation and nano scratch testing. Fretting wear behaviors of untreated and oxidized samples were also examined. The formed oxide coating mainly included rutile TiO2 as well as a little alumina. The weight gain with respect to the oxidation duration obeyed the linear oxidation kinetics law. The growth of oxide grains was in inadequate growth state of incomplete scale coverage from 2nd to 4th hour duration, in normal growth state from 4th to 6th hour duration while in excessive growth state of oxide particle agglomeration and surface roughening from 6th to 8th (or more than 8th) hour duration. The coating thickness increased from 5 mu m to 12 mu m as oxidation duration increased from 2 h to 8 h. The increase in duration also increased surface roughness and nano hardness as well as adhesion strength of the film/substrate for oxidized samples. The nano hardness value was 10.06 +/- 2.15 GPa and the critical load of failure during nano scratch testing was 554.3 +/- 6.44 mN for 4 h treated sample. The untreated and oxidized samples showed a same fretting running status and fretting regime with a displacement amplitude of 200 mu m while revealing different fretting failure mechanisms. It was mainly abrasive and adhesive wear under ploughing force for untreated sample, while a mix of 3-body abrasion by rolling oxide particles and severe plastic deformation under high contact stress between two ceramic materials for the oxidized samples. Abstract:Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloy is used for low-pressure compressor blades of aero-engine due to its high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability. Low-pressure compressor blades are subject to fretting wear in service, which may lead to fracture failure of the blades. The preparation of wear-resistant coatings is currently an effective solution in solving the problem of fretting wear on Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloy. However, the fretting wear resistance and microstructure stability of the coating under variable cycle fretting conditions require more attention. In this work, the fretting wear performance and microstructure stability of the Ti-Al-C-N composite coating under variable cycle fretting conditions are investigated. The results show that the parameters of variable cycle operating conditions have a notable effect on the coefficient of friction (COF). The variable frequency and variable temperature working conditions result in the alteration of the fretting operation mechanism. Whereas the variable stroke amplitude and the variable load conditions do not cause changes in the fretting operation mechanism, and both are in the gross slip region (GSR). The lowest wear rate occurs under variable stroke amplitude conditions. The wear rate is the maximum under the variable cycle temperature condition. According to the dissipated energy calculation, the difference between the two different stroke amplitudes is the biggest among all the conditions. EBSD and TEM analyses show that the subsurface of variable stroke amplitude worn scar has a more uniform strain distribution, and reveals a unique subsurface structure with a transformation from crystalline to amorphous, which contributes to improving the wear resistance. This work provides insights into coating microstructure stability and wear mechanisms under variable cycle conditions.

Abstract:Fretting wear evolution of γ-TiAl alloy was investigated. Evolution of wear scar, tribolayer and wear debris were studied using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results show that the wear debris generated from γ-TiAl alloy can be compacted to form a tribolayer rapidly after 100 fretting cycles. At the starting stage, the rapid formation and rupture of tribolayer alternatively occur due to insufficient thickness of the tribolayer. With the proceeding of fretting, the thickness of tribolayer increases due to increase in the amount of the wear debris, which makes the tribolayer more stable. The evolution of the wear debris and the formation of tribolayer significantly influence the fretting wear behavior of γ-TiAl alloy. The wear rate of γ-TiAl alloy decreases rapidly from 255.6 × 10−3μm3 /(N·μm) after 2000 fretting cycles to 35.5 × 10−3μm3 /(N·μm) after 10,000 fretting cycles when a thick tribolayer is formed. A physical model was proposed to describe the evolution process of the fretting wear of γ-TiAl alloy.

Abstract:Fretting wear between titanium alloy components in aero engine is prevailing in the blade dovetail, the blade crown, and the damping shoulders. In this study, the fretting wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated by changing the load and displacement under a high frequency (100 Hz). To simulate the actual working conditions in aero engines, both the ball and flat samples were Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It was found that as the load increased, or as the applied displacement decreased, the fretting regime changed from gross slip regime to partial slip regime. The coefficient of friction/traction at steady stage decreased as load increased. Wear scar morphologies varied with fretting running conditions. In gross slip regime, the central area was higher than the rest region of the wear scar. In the mixed slip regime, large material accumulation could be found at both ends of the reciprocating motion. In partial slip regime, a nearly original fretting sample surface was observed in the central area and wear occurred in the edge area. Furthermore, considering the wear of the paired samples, a method based on the fretting wear scar diameter was proposed to evaluate the fretting running conditions.

Abstract:To improve wear resistance of the titanium alloy micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings, this work explores the influence mechanism of graphene on the wear resistance. Wear-resistant ceramic coatings with different graphene concentrations were prepared on TC4 alloy by using the pulsed bipolar power supply. The surface properties and phase characteristics of the ceramic coating were measured and analyzed. The tribometer, scanning electron microscope and three-dimensional microscope (white light interferometer) were used to analyze tribological properties and surface topography of the samples, respectively. It was found that the friction coefficient of the material got significantly decreased by the MAO coatings, and the wear resistance was improved. Lubricating effect of the graphene did not influence the hardness and compactness of the coating directly, but film wear loss decreased during the friction process. Compared with the matrix, grinding cracks were more flat, lighter and narrower on the coatings. There were only tiny quantities of grinding wear marks on the coatings, and no obvious furrow or massive shedding was found.

Abstract:MoS2 coatings were deposited by a radio frequency (rf) sputtering process on 1045 steel substrate which was pre-treated with ion-plated TiN and shot-peening processes. A series of fretting wear experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of various properties of substrate induced by different pre-treatment methods on the fretting tribological behavior of MoS2 coatings. The results showed that the fretting damage of MoS2 coating was greatly dependent on the surface characteristics, mechanical and physical-chemical properties of the substrate. The transfer and smearing of MoS2 coating in the initial wear stage, the oxidation, and delamination of MoS2 layers in the later wear process, were always subjected to the effects of mechanical properties of substrate, surface morphology, distribution of contact stress, and the adhesion strength of MoS2 coatings. Additionally, the fretting tribological behavior of MoS2 coatings was also affected by the change of its microstructure, the plastic deformation ability of the substrate and their synergistic effect.

Abstract:The fretting wear behaviors and mechanism of a high Nb–TiAl alloy with full lamellar microstructure at ambient temperature were investigated. The fretting wear mechanism of the alloy under different loads and displacement amplitudes was revealed using experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the load and displacement amplitude significantly affected fretting wear behaviors and the mechanism of the Ti–45Al–9Nb alloy. Higher load and lower displacement amplitude could effectively reduce the fretting wear of the alloy. Molecular dynamics simulation results showed that the order-twin lamellar interface hindered the deformation and dislocation movement of twins, improved the mechanical properties of the material, and improved the wear resistance of such alloy. The wear mechanism of Ti–45Al–9Nb alloy was adhesive wear and surface fatigue wear.

Abstract:Utilizing a 2D MXene nanocoating on titanium surfaces grooved by laser surface texturing (LST) achieves a significant 70% reduction in the friction coefficient and minimal substrate wear. This strategic integration of LST with lubricative 2D material nanocoating delineates a groundbreaking methodology for substantially improving the tribological performance of metals, showcasing a cutting‐edge advancement in materials science applications. The inferior tribological properties of titanium (Ti) and its alloys, due to their limited work hardening capability and the mechanical instability of their oxide scale, pose substantive challenges in practical applications. Surface texturing and the application of 2D material coatings are acknowledged as efficacious strategies for enhancing these properties. Nevertheless, the rapid loss of effectiveness when employing these methods in isolation highlights a significant limitation. Herein, a 50‐nm‐thick MXene nanocoating is deposited onto groove‐textured pure Ti surface, effectuating a reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) from ≈0.57 to 0.17, thereby substantially mitigating wear on the Ti substrate. The grooved surface architecture plays a vital role in storing MXenes and facilitating lubricant replenishment through the stirring effect of frictional stress during subsequent friction process. Further, the continuous decomposition and reorganization of MXene coating results in the formation of a robust tribofilm that resists oxidation and plastic deformation in the subsurface layer, markedly enhancing the friction and wear resistance. These findings are crucial for improving tribological performance in Ti and its alloys and provide a straightforward yet effective strategy for tailoring their tribological properties by integrating LST with 2D material nanocoating.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of titanium carbide (TiC) nanoparticles on the microstructure and fretting wear performance of Ti64-GV alloys. The Ti64 alloys, featuring varying TiC concentrations, were fabricated through spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Fretting experiments followed a face-centered central composite design methodology, employing a second-order quadratic regression model to analyze wear volume loss and coefficient of friction (CoF). The findings revealed a notable reduction in wear volume loss and friction coefficient with increasing TiC content. The presence of TiC significantly enhanced the wear resistance of Nano-composites due to heightened hardness and oxidation wear resistance. Employing hybrid desirability-based response surface methodology (RSM) led to substantial improvements in wear characteristics (37% in CoF and 46% in wear volume loss). Microstructural analysis affirmed enhanced surface quality and textures using the RSM hybrid approach for predicting optimal process parameters.

Abstract:Ti-based materials have attracted considerable attention for potential applications in biomedicine due to their excellent chemical inertness, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, the poor friction properties of oxide films (e.g. TiO2) on Ti-based materials significantly deteriorate their service life. Here, the effect of residual stress improves the frictional properties of TiO2 nanotubes were studied. The results show that the residual stresses at the surface of the non-peened sample and the samples peened by steel balls with diameters of 4 and 6 mm are 10.17, 49.97 and 65.31 MPa, respectively. The increase in residual stress improves the growth rate of the TiO2 nanotubes. Meanwhile, with increasing residual stress, the friction coefficient and the wear rates decreases. It is noteworthy that a bridge between theoretical calculations and the experimental testing of surface residual stress is established. The results suggest that the surface with 10% biaxial compression can represent the surface state after shot peening with a 6 mm diameter steel ball. In addition, shot peening could increase the film formation rate of the Ti13Nb13Zr surface and effectively promote the formation of TiO2 nanotubes. Our findings show how the friction performance of TiO2 can be improved by using the residual stress on the surface and provide insights for the rational design of high-performance TiO2 biomedical materials.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) materials are highly valued in the medical field for their outstanding biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, challenges such as suboptimal wettability and wear resistance can impact the tribological properties of titanium implants, potentially leading to implant failure. This study explores the application of ultrafast pulsed laser processing to create two distinct structures, circular pits and grooves, on the surface of titanium materials. The samples underwent low-surface-energy treatment, after which the wettability and wear resistance of the textured surfaces were evaluated. The findings indicate that the textured surfaces exhibit improved hydrophobic properties and reduced surface wear. Specifically, the textured surfaces demonstrated a remarkable 73.68% reduction in wear compared to the untextured surfaces. These results underscore the potential of etching textured structures onto titanium surfaces to enhance their wear resistance, thereby offering promising implications for the improvement of titanium implant performance.

Abstract:The CP-Ti alloy reinforced by whisker-shaped TiB and nearly granular TiC was in-situ fabricated through laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of Ti-B 4 C-C composite system. The influences of operating frequency and counterpart materials on fretting wear behavior of the LPBF-ed composite in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were investigated. The results reveal that a relative density of nearly 99.1% and high-quality surface of the LPBF-ed composite are acquired as a result of the intense thermodynamics within molten pool induced by the carbon additive. For the ZrO 2 counterpart, the average coefficient of friction (COF) of composite experienced an initially sharp reduction from 0.42 to 0.16 and a subsequently gradual decrease to 0.13 as successively increasing the operating frequency. The determined wear mechanism transferred from the severe abrasive wear with moderate adhesion wear to the predominated abrasive wear with a reduction of wear volume due to the formation of titanium oxide layer caused by the accumulation of increased wear debris. For GCr15 counterpart, the average COF nearly remained stable, but the wear volume exhibited a moderate increase and a subsequent reduction to 3.56 × 10 6 μm 3 , due to the partial or nearly complete covering of the accumulated wear debris on the worn surface.

Abstract:Titanium alloys have a wide application in aerospace industries as it has greater strength and low density, but it has poor tribological properties. To improve its friction and wear performance, in present work, a femtosecond laser is used to directly irradiate the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy surface in air conditioning, which results in localized ablation and the formation of periodic microstructures but also a strong pressure wave, propagating the material inside. Through the optimization of processing parameters, surface modification and periodic micropatterning with effective anti-friction properties were successfully induced on the surface. After a treatment of femtosecond laser-induced surface modification (FsLSM), the surface microhardness was improved by 16.6% and compressive residual stress reached -746 MPa. Besides, laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) with a titanium oxide outer coating were fabricated uniformly on the titanium alloy surface. Rotary ball-on-disk wear experiments revealed that the average coefficient of friction (COF) and wear mass loss of the specimen with FsLSM treatment were largely reduced by 68.9% and 90% as compared to that of untreated specimens, respectively. It was analyzed that the reason for the remarkable wear resistance was attributed to the comprehensive action of the generation of LIPSS, the titanium oxide outer coating, high amplitude compressive residual stress and gradient grain size distribution on the subsurface during the laser surface treatment. Since the findings here are broadly applicable to a wide spectrum of engineering metals and alloys, the present results offer unique pathways to enhancing the tribological performance of materials.
