Abstract:In order to obtain the hysteretic behavior of T-type SHS-joints and lay the foundation for further study of the aseismic behavior of SHS structures, twelve T-type SHS joints subjected to axially cyclic load were investigated through laboratory tests. Six of these joints were supported at two ends of the chord, and a boundary condition of restricting the displacement in the middle of the chord was adopted for the other six joints. Failure modes and hysteretic curves of the joints were obtained, and the main parameters for estimating the earthquake resistant behavior of the joints were also studied, such as load-carrying capacity, ductility ratio and energy dissipation coefficient of the joints. The effect of different boundary conditions and geometrical parameters on the hysteretic behavior of the joints was analyzed. The ultimate capacities of the joints were compared with those obtained by using the code formula of the country (GB50017-2003), the CIDECT formula and the finite element analysis for monotonic loading, respectively. The results showed that main failure modes of the joints included the plastic deformation of the chord face under the action of compression force, the cracking of the brace, or the chord at the edge of the connection welds under tension, which eventually led to the rupture of the brace section or the chord face. The hysteretic curves of the joints exhibited plump loops, and the joints still had good energy dissipation capacity from the crack emergence of the chord face near chord side walls at the joint region to the complete failure of the joints. The size of the joint weld also had a significant influence on the hysteretic behavior of the joints.
