Abstract:In order to reduce the energy consumption for the separation of methyl acetate-methanol-water system, the extraction process with composite salts was investigated. The results show that adding salts can significantly decrease the mutual solubility of the components in the system mentioned above. When the composite extractant CEA composed of saturated aqueous solution of MgCl2 and CH3COOK was added into the system, the area of two-phase region in the phase diagram enlarges and the maximum mass fraction of methyl acetate in the organic phase rises from 87% to 98%, and when the density of the CEA was changed from 1050 kg·m-3 to 1280 kg·m-3, the mass fraction of methyl acetate in the organic phase rises from 77% to above 90%. In the meantime, the distribution coefficient of methyl acetate in organic and aqueous phases increases from 2 to13. Increasing the stage of extraction and the extraction ratio can enhance the extractive efficiency for separating methyl acetate from its aqueous mixture. When using three stages countercurrent flow extraction at 25℃, the composite extractant CEA with density of 1220 kg·m-3 and the extraction ratio of 1:1, in the organic phase, the mass fraction of methyl acetate increases from 65.41% to 98.01%, the mass fraction of methanol decreases from 28.63% to 0.06% and the distribution coefficient of methyl acetate increases from 1 before extraction to 37. The main functional mechanism of the composite salts in the extraction process is that the salt ions form complex with the methanol molecules and the intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between the molecules of salts and water. The economical effect of using the proposed extraction process with composite salts to improve the purification process of methyl acetate from the alcoholysis waste in the production of polyvinyl alcohol was studied, and the results show that, comparing with the traditional technique, the energy consumption of using the proposed new separation process could be saved about 35%.
