Abstract:Highly ordered arrays consisting uniform fluorescent cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) ring or dot structures were obtained by self-assembly of QDs on chemically patterned substrates. In this method, Au substrates with alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic square patterns are firstly fabricated by microcontact printing, which allows water droplets to condense on the hydrophilic regions to provide two-dimensional template arrays. The CdSe QDs are then assembled at the liquid/liquid interfaces to give uniform micro or nanostructures. The shape and size of the rings and dots can be tailored by controlling the relative evaporation speed of the water and the organic solvents. The obtained nanostructures have ideal topography to avoid substrate-induced fluorescence quenching.

Abstract:Highly ordered and strongly fluorescent 2-dimensional arrays of cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) were obtained on gold substrates using a simple method combining microcontact printing and "breath figures" techniques. In this process, water vapor was condensed on chemically patterned Au substrates to form ordered arrays of droplets. When the water droplet arrays were submerged in a chloroform solution of CdSe QDs, the QDs were spontaneously assembled at the droplet surface and were then turned into uniform ring structures after solvent evaporation. The size and shape of the rings could be readily tuned by varying the pattern dimensions and assembly conditions. More complicated patterns were obtained by introducing sample vibration and changing the QD concentration. This process did not require grafting the QDs with polymer and the produced ring array had ideal topography that avoids substrate-induced florescence quenching.

Abstract:Negatively charged and monodisperse CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with average size of about 5nm were synthesized in aqueous solution using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as stabilizing reagent. Through the electrostatic interactions among the negative surface charges on CdTe QDs, the cationic groups of poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and the anionic groups of poly(sodium 4-styrene-sulfonate) (PSS), ultrathin multilayer of CdTe QDs were fabricated on the pretreated quartz substrate by layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly method. UV-Vis spectra, photoluminescence spectra, XPS and AFM were used to characterize the ultrathin films. The results show that there is a linear relationship between the adsorption and the layer numbers of the thin films, indicating that the resultant nanofilms have good quality. The ultrathin films are flatly deposited on the quartz surface with some aggregates of CdTe QDs on it. The stability and quality of the films can be improved by the introduction of polyelectrolyte multilayers of PDDA/PSS/PDDA between two adjacent layers of CdTe QDs on the substrate. The prepared ultrathin films of CdTe QDs show good photoluminescence property.

Abstract:The micropatterning of layers of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by inorganic ligands is demonstrated using PbS core and CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs. A layer-by-layer approach is used to assemble the QD films, where each cycle involves the deposition of a QD layer by dip-coating, and the replacement of the native organic ligands by inorganic moieties, such as OH(-) and S(2-), followed by a thorough cleaning of the resulting film. This results in a smooth and crack-free QD film on which a photoresist can be spun. The micropatterns are defined by a positive photoresist, followed by the removal of uncovered QDs by selective wet etching with an HCl/H3PO4 mixture. The resulting patterns can have submicron feature dimensions, limited by the resolution of the lithographic process, and can be formed on planar and 3D substrates. It is shown that the photolithography and wet etching steps have little effect on the photoluminescence quantum yield of CdSe/CdS QDs. Compared with the unpatterned CdSe/CdS QD film, only a 10% degradation in the quantum yield is observed. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed micropatterning method to implement the large-scale device integration of colloidal quantum dots.

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes with quantum dot luminophores show promise in the development of next-generation displays, because quantum dot luminophores demonstrate high quantum yields, extremely narrow emission, spectral tunability and high stability, among other beneficial characteristics. However, the inability to achieve size-selective quantum dot patterning by conventional methods hinders the realization of full-colour quantum dot displays. Here, we report the first demonstration of a large-area, full-colour quantum dot display, including in flexible form, using optimized quantum dot films, and with control of the nano-interfaces and carrier behaviour. Printed quantum dot films exhibit excellent morphology, well-ordered quantum dot structure and clearly defined interfaces. These characteristics are achieved through the solvent-free transfer of quantum dot films and the compact structure of the quantum dot networks. Significant enhancements in charge transport/balance in the quantum dot layer improve electroluminescent performance. A method using plasmonic coupling is also suggested to further enhance luminous efficiency. The results suggest routes towards creating large-scale optoelectronic devices in displays, solid-state lighting and photovoltaics.

Abstract:Quantum dot color conversion technology (QDCC) has attracted extensive interest in display due to its high performance, low cost, and easy integration. However, due to the limited thickness and nonuniform morphology, the color convention pixels generally exhibit a low performance accompanied by blue light leakage or optical crosstalk. Here, we report the fabrication of quantum dot (QD) microarrays by using photocurable QD ink. The resulting QD microarrays exhibit 3D morphology with hemisphere shape without coffee‐ring effect as well as strong photoluminescence, which is desirable for QDCC applications. We demonstrate the dominant role of UV curable inks and surface functionalized substrate in controlling the shape of microarrays, where a large contact angle (66°) and large height to diameter ratio (0.35) can be achieved. The fabrication of 3D QDs microarrays opens up new opportunities in a variety of applications including Micro‐LED and near‐field display.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies, thanks to their size-tunable electronic and optical properties. Among various types of QDs, colloidal "giant" QDs (g-QDs, core/thick-shell) have been widely used in different applications, such as solar cells, light emitting devices, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. However, g-QDs have a thick-shell which serves as a physical barrier for electron and hole transfer, leading to a slow charge transfer rate. In this work, we synthesized CdSe/CdSexS1-x/CdS core/shell/shell g-QDs with an intermediate CdSexS1-x alloyed layer. The presence of this interfacial layer largely improves the absorption of CdSe/CdS QDs, particularly in the 300-650 nm range. By engineering the interfacial layer, the holes can leak more into the CdS shell region compared to that of CdSe/CdS QDs. PEC devices based on alloyed g-QDs exhibit a 20% higher saturated photocurrent density (11 ± 0.5 mA cm-2) compared to CdSe/CdS QDs. In addition, after one-hour illumination (100 mW cm-2), the PEC cell based on alloyed g-QDs still exhibits a photocurrent density of 7.5 mA cm-2, maintaining 70% of its initial value. Such alloyed g-QDs are very promising for several emerging optoelectronic applications, where charge separation, transfer and transport play a critical role for the realization of high performance devices.

Abstract:Micro/nano patterns based on quantum dots (QDs) are of great interest for applications ranging from electronics to photonics to sensing devices for biomedical purposes. Several patterning methods have been developed, but all lack the precision and reproducibility required to fabricate precise, complex patterns of less than one micrometer in size, or require specialized crosslinking ligands, limiting their application. In this study, we present a novel approach to directly pattern QD nanopatterns by electron beam lithography using commercially available colloidal QDs without additional modifications. We have successfully generated reliable dot and line QD patterns with dimensions as small as 140 nm. In addition, we have shown that using a 10 nm SiO2 spacer layer on a 50 nm Au layer substrate can double the fluorescence intensity compared to QDs on the Au layer without SiO2. This method takes advantage of traditional nanolithography without the need for a resist layer.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the controlled formation of two-dimensional periodic arrays of ring-shaped nanostructures assembled from CdSe semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The patterns were fabricated by using an evaporative templating method. This involves the introduction of an aqueous solution containing both quantum dots and polystyrene microspheres onto the surface of a planar hydrophilic glass substrate. The quantum dots became confined to the meniscus of the microspheres during evaporation, which drove ring assembly via capillary forces at the polystyrene sphere/glass substrate interface. The geometric parameters for nanoring formation could be controlled by tuning the size of the microspheres and the concentration of the QDs employed. This allowed hexagonal arrays of nanorings to be formed with thicknesses ranging from single dot necklaces to thick multilayer structures over surface areas of many square millimeters. Moreover, the diameter of the ring, structures could be simultaneously controlled. A simple model was employed to explain the forces involved in the formation of nanoparticle nanorings.

Abstract:Quantum dots color filter (QDCF) is potential to be a game‐changer for display and micro LED industry. In this paper, highly fluorescent QDCF have been prepared by changing surface active ligand of CdSe@ZnS to nonreactive ligand for photolithographic patterning. The quantum dots (QDs) with inactivated ligand avoids chemical reaction during the photolithography process. The 4 μm thickness QDCF with 28.8% (red) absolute PL quantum yield (λmax of 630.16 nm) has been achieved after the photolithograpy process, while the QDs with surface active sites failed to form a patterned film. This may be due to the coordination of activated bonds with photoresist and the occurrence of complexation reaction.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials in nanophotonics, biological imaging, and even quantum computing. Precise positioning and patterning of QDs is a prerequisite for realizing their actual applications. Contrary to the traditional two discrete steps of fabricating and positioning QDs, herein, a novel sugar-electron-beam writing (SEW) method is reported for producing QDs via electron-beam lithography (EBL) that uses a carefully chosen synthetic resist, poly(2-(methacrylamido)glucopyranose) (PMAG). Carbon QDs (CQDs) could be fabricated in situ through electron beam exposure, and the nanoscale position and luminescence intensity of the produced CQDs could be precisely controlled without the assistance of any other fluorescent matter. We have demonstrated that upon combining an electron beam with a glycopolymer, in situ production of CQDs occurs at the electron beam spot center with nanoscale precision at any place and with any patterns, an advancement that we believe will stimulate innovations in future applications.

Abstract:Photolithographically generated patterns have been created on immobilized CdSe QD thin films by fine-tuning their optical properties (intensity and emission wavelength) postsynthetically. These optically modified QDs show enhanced selectivity for binding of different ligands, affording the ability to fabricate optically reconfigurable surfaces for display or sensing applications. The patterns may be readily generated with any typical optical lithographic approach.

Abstract:Abstract Establishing multi-colour patterning technology for colloidal quantum dots is critical for realising high-resolution displays based on the material. Here, we report a solution-based processing method to form patterns of quantum dots using a light-driven ligand crosslinker, ethane-1,2-diyl bis(4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate). The crosslinker with two azide end groups can interlock the ligands of neighbouring quantum dots upon exposure to UV, yielding chemically robust quantum dot films. Exploiting the light-driven crosslinking process, different colour CdSe-based core-shell quantum dots can be photo-patterned; quantum dot patterns of red, green and blue primary colours with a sub-pixel size of 4 μm × 16 μm, corresponding to a resolution of >1400 pixels per inch, are demonstrated. The process is non-destructive, such that photoluminescence and electroluminescence characteristics of quantum dot films are preserved after crosslinking. We demonstrate that red crosslinked quantum dot light-emitting diodes exhibiting an external quantum efficiency as high as 14.6% can be obtained.

Abstract:Inkjet printing has been considered an available way to achieve large size full-color RGB quantum dots LED display, and the key point is to obtain printed film with uniform and flat surface profile. In this work, mixed solvent of 20 vol % 1,2-dichlorobenzene (oDCB) with cyclohexylbenzene (CHB) was used to dissolve green quantum dots (QDs) with CdSe@ZnS/ZnS core/shell structure. Then, by inkjet printing, a flat dotlike QDs film without the coffee ring was successfully obtained on polyetherimide (PEI)-modified ZnO layer, and the printed dots array exhibited great stability and repeatability. Here, adding oDCB into CHB solutions was used to reduce surface tension, and employing ZnO nanoparticle layer with PEI-modified was used to increase the surface free energy. As a result, a small contact angle is formed, which leads to the enhancement of evaporation rate, and then the coffee ring effect was suppressed. The printed dots with flat surface profile were eventually realized. Moreover, inverted green QD-LEDs with PEI modified ZnO film as electron transport layer (ETL) and printed green QDs film as emission layer were successfully fabricated. The QD-LEDs exhibited the maximum luminance of 12 000 cd/m(2) and the peak current efficiency of 4.5 cd/A at luminance of 1500 cd/m(2).

Abstract:Inkjet printing technique is susceptible to form coffer-ring patterns and inhomogeneous films owing to the evaporation and its accompanying hydrodynamics of microscale quantum dot droplet. Pioneer efforts are usually confined to two-dimensional flat substrates and inks with mixed solvents/additives. Herein we demonstrate that physically confined space offers an additional parameter in tailoring such processes of droplets and the following quantum-dot self-assembly deposition, without extra modification of quantum dots or solvent chemistry. Owing to the boundary of physically confined space, two three-phase border lines in both the bottom center (horizontal direction) and the barrier of the bank substrate (vertical direction) arise, inducing dual capillary flows and Marangoni backflows. The evaporation, fluid flow, and film-forming process in physically confined space are studied by introducing well-prepared single-solvent quantum dots inks. The systematical analysis offers valuable instructions including ink preparation, surface modification, and postprocessing evaporation technique for inkjet-printed patterning applications, especially for pixelated display, polychrome patterning, and sensor array.

Abstract:A simple and efficient route for quantum dot (QDs) patterning using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as templates is described. By means of a laser direct-writing (LDW) technique, SAMs of octadecylphosphonic acid formed by adsorption on native oxide layer of titanium film were patterned through laser-induced ablation of the SAM molecules. This technique allows the creation of chemical-specific patterns accompanied by slight change in the topography. Using atomic force microscopy and friction force microscopy, the dependence of feature size and characteristics on the irradiation dose was demonstrated. Upon immersion of a substrate with patterned SAMs bearing thiol as the terminal group into a dispersion of QDs resulted in the assembly of QDs on the specific thiol-terminated areas. Patterns of QDs with different photoluminescent wavelength were generated. The LDW technique, which is convenient and flexible due to its path-directed and maskless fabrication process, provided a new powerful approach for patterning materials on surfaces for various applications.
