Abstract:A high-sensitivity optical sensor based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) has been demonstrated. The cavity of the FPI is formed by two parallel half-reflective film-coated glass substrates with a distance of 1 mm and works as the sensing area. The interaction between the propagating wave and the analyte gives the sensing signal. High sensitivity of 1149 nm/RIU has been achieved for the wavelength interrogation. The Fabry-Perot sensor can be made into a large array with multiple microfluidic channels to detect the different types of analytes. It has great potential in biochemical sensing. Abstract:Optical fibers have been involved in the area of sensing applications for more than four decades. Moreover, interferometric optical fiber sensors have attracted broad interest for their prospective applications in sensing temperature, refractive index, strain measurement, pressure, acoustic wave, vibration, magnetic field, and voltage. During this time, numerous types of interferometers have been developed such as Fabry-Perot, Michelson, Mach-Zehnder, Sagnac Fiber, and Common-path interferometers. Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) fiber-optic sensors have been extensively investigated for their exceedingly effective, simple fabrication as well as low cost aspects. In this study, a wide variety of FPI sensors are reviewed in terms of fabrication methods, principle of operation and their sensing applications. The chronology of the development of FPI sensors and their implementation in various applications are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Low-finesse fiber-optic Fabry–Perot (F-P) interferometric sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, anti-electromagnetic interference, and compact size, and is one of the most widely used optical fiber sensors. With the development of sensor design and demodulation algorithms, F-P sensing technique plays an increasingly important role in high-speed dynamic measurement, such as dynamic temperature or pressure, acoustic vibration, dynamic displacement, and distance. Signal demodulation methods largely determine the performance of the entire sensing system. Compared with quasi-static measurement, high-precision measurement of dynamic F-P cavity is more challenging. The advancement of fast tunable laser technology in telecommunication field provides novel perspectives for demodulation methods and dynamic applications based on F-P sensors. This article reviews the latest developments in fast interrogation techniques for dynamic low-finesse F-P sensors, including intensity demodulation, quadrature phase demodulation and absolute cavity length demodulation. In addition, array multiplexing and multi-parameter measurement techniques are also involved.</p>

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel sensor based on two parallel Fabry-Pérot interferometers (FPIs) and the Vernier effect, achieving temperature and pressure sensing. Both FPIs utilize the end face of a single-mode fiber as the reflective surface. FPI 1 is composed of a single-mode fiber and a thin-core fiber fusion spliced together, with the cavity filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS); FPI 2 is made of two segments of single-mode fiber with the cavity filled with ultraviolet (UV) glue. Within the temperature range of 28–40 °C, the temperature sensitivities of FPI 1 and FPI 2 are −0.40 nm/°C and 0.49 nm/°C, respectively, indicating that the reflection spectra of the two sensors shift in opposite directions as the temperature increases. When the two sensors are connected using a 3 dB coupler and both are employed for temperature sensing, enhanced Vernier effect is achieved, resulting in a sensitivity of −3.38 nm/°C. This represents an 8.45-fold and 6.89-fold increase in sensitivity compared to FPI 1 and FPI 2 , respectively. Additionally, FPI 2 exhibits sensitivity to pressure; in the range of 0.1–0.7 MPa, the sensitivity of FPI 2 reaches 2.73 nm/MPa. When using FPI 1 as a reference device and FPI 2 as a sensing device, the sensitivity within the same range reaches 20.91 nm/MPa, a 7.65-fold increase compared to FPI 2 alone.

Abstract:Conventional optical fiber temperature/strain sensors often have to make compromises between the resolution and the dynamic range. Here we present a new method that meets the measurement requirements for both high resolution and large dynamic range. A high-quality optical fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) constructed using a pair of chirped fiber Bragg gratings is employed as the sensor and a dual-mode direct spectrum interrogation method is proposed to identify the small drift of external temperature or strain. As a proof-of-concept illustration, a temperature resolution of 0.2 °C within 30–130 °C is demonstrated. For strain sensing, the resolution can be 10 με within 0–1000 με. The measurement resolution can be improved further by routinely increasing the reflectivity of the CFBG and the cavity length and the sensor can also be mass-produced. This new sensing schema not only resolves the conflict between the resolution and the dynamic range of fiber-optic temperature/strain sensors but can also be extended to other sensors and measurands.

Modeling and Signal Processing of Low-Finesse Fabry-Perot Interferometric Fiber Optic Sensors

Abstract:This dissertation addresses several theoretical issues in low-finesse fiber optic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (FPI) sensors. The work is divided into two levels: modeling of the sensors, and signal processing based on White-Light-Interferometry (WLI). In the first chapter, the technical background of the low-finesse FPI sensor is briefly reviewed and the problems to be solved are highlighted. A model for low finesse Extrinsic FPI (EFPI) is developed in Chapter 2. The theory is experimentally proven using both single-mode and multimode fiber based EFPIs. The fringe visibility and the additional phase in the spectrum are found to be strongly influenced by the optical path difference (OPD), the output spatial power distribution and the working wavelength; however they are not directly related to the light coherence. In Chapter 3, the Single-Multi-Single-mode Intrinsic FPI (SMS-IFPI) is theoretically and experimentally studied. Reflectivity, cavity refocusing, and the additional phase in the sensor spectrum are modeled. The multiplexing capacity of the sensor is dramatically increased by promoting light refocusing. Similar to EFPIs, wave-front distortion generates an additional phase in the interference spectrogram. The resultant non-constant phase plays an important role in causing abrupt jumps in the demodulated OPD. WLI-based signal processing of the low-finesse FP sensor is studied in Chapter 4. The lower bounds of the OPD estimation are calculated, the bounds are applied to evaluate OPD demodulation algorithms. Two types of algorithms (TYPE I & II) are studied and compared. Abstract:An in-fiber rectangular air Fabry-Perot (FP) strain sensor based on a high-precision fiber cutting platform (HFCP) is proposed. The HFCP consisting of a CCD notation system, a micro-displacement platform, and an optical fiber cleaver can be used to precisely control the length of FP cavity. The microcavity of FP (even only tens of microns) with smooth reflective surface can be realized easily by using this system. The FP structures with different cavity lengths have been fabricated in this paper. Simulation and experimental results prove that the shorter length the cavity has, the higher strain sensitivity and the larger free spectral range (FSR) the sensor obtains. The strain sensitivity and FSR of in-fiber rectangular air FP sensor with a cavity length of 35µm can be up to 2.23pm/με and 28.5nm respectively. Moreover, the proposed FP strain sensor has a negligible temperature sensitivity in the range of 25–75°C. It is anticipated that such easy making, compact and low-cost fiber-optic strain sensors could find important applications in practice.

Abstract:Fiber sensors possess characteristics such as compact structure, simplicity, electromagnetic interference resistance, and reusability, making them widely applicable in various practical engineering applications. Traditional fiber sensors based on different microstructures solely rely on the thermal expansion effect of silica material itself, limiting their usage primarily to temperature or pressure sensing. By employing thin film technology to form Fabry–Perot (FP) cavities on the end-face or inside the fiber, sensitivity to different physical quantities can be achieved using different materials, and this greatly expands the application range of fiber sensing. This paper provides a systematic introduction to the principle of FP cavity fiber optic sensors based on thin film technology and reviews the applications and development trends of this sensor in various measurement fields. Currently, there is a growing need for precise measurements in both scientific research and industrial production. This has led to an increase in the variety of structures and sensing materials used in fiber sensors. The thin film discussed in this paper, suitable for various types of sensing, not only applies to fiber optic FP cavity sensors but also contributes to the research and advancement of other types of fiber sensors.

Abstract:In this study, a fiber in-line air-gap Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) is fabricated by HF acid etching. For a low-cost and higher precise measurement, a demodulation system based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technique is build up and demonstrated in this air-gap FPI. In temperature measurements, the temperature sensitivity is about 1.75rad/°C by phase shift detection. We also test the long term performance of the system and the RMS error is about 0.04rad, which corresponds to the temperature resolution of ~0.02°C. It is much higher than the measurement resolution by using the traditional wavelength shift detection method. Our experiments show that the FMCW can provide a low-cost, high resolution and high speed interrogation solution to the fiber FPIs.

Abstract:An optical fiber pressure sensor was designed,fabricated and characterized.It employed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer and simple intensity-demodulation technology.A square silicon cup processed by anisotropic etching serves as sensitive element for the better consistency than that of circular diaphragm.A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is introduced to reduce the nonlinearity due to the non-planarity of the deflection.Reference light generated from a 2×2 optical fiber coupler is used to decrease the influence of intensity variations of the light source.Single-value measurement was achieved under the pressure range from 0 to 38 kPa.The experimental results demonstrate an upmost relative sensitivity of 0.7%/kPa and a reasonable repeatability,consisting well with the theoretical analysis and simulation.A new method of multi-wave or multi-sensor is presented to expand the measurement range with high sensitivity.

Abstract:Pressure sensors based on fiber-optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) have been extensively applied in various industrial and biomedical fields. In this paper, some key improvements of EFPI-based pressure sensors such as the controlled thermal bonding technique, diaphragm-based EFPI sensors, and white light interference technology have been reviewed. Recent progress on signal demodulation method and applications of EFPI-based pressure sensors has been introduced. Signal demodulation algorithms based on the cross correlation and mean square error (MSE) estimation have been proposed for retrieving the cavity length of EFPI. Absolute measurement with a resolution of 0.08 nm over large dynamic range has been carried out. For downhole monitoring, an EFPI and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) cascade multiplexing fiber-optic sensor system has been developed, which can operate in temperature 300 °C with a good long-term stability and extremely low temperature cross-sensitivity. Diaphragm-based EFPI pressure sensors have been successfully used for low pressure and acoustic wave detection. Experimental results show that a sensitivity of 31 mV/Pa in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 12.7 kHz for aeroacoustic wave detection has been obtained.

In-line fiber optic optofluidic sensor based on a fully open Fabry-Perot interferometer

Abstract:We present an all-fiber, fully open Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) cavity that is suitable for fluidic measurement applications. Fabrication of the FPI involves the alignment and bonding of three optical fiber sections using either ceramic glue or low-temperature melting glass. The fabrication procedure allows the protection of the cleaved optical fiber end faces, which serve as the two mirrors of the FPI, from damage, thus ensuring the high visibility of the FPI sensor. The FPI's complete openness permits the analyte of interest fluids to flow smoothly into the cavity and interact directly with the light, obviating the need for additional assistance. The fabrication experiment demonstrates that the fabrication procedure can readily achieve a visibility of over 20 dB. Refractive index testing indicates that the sensor exhibits a sensitivity of over 1116 nm/RIU within the range of 1.334-1.375. A comparison of temperature investigations indicates that the fully open cavity FPI fabricated by bonding with low-temperature melting glass exhibits relatively lower temperature immunity than that bonded with ceramic glue. Both have a relatively low temperature fluctuation within the temperature range of 40°C-100°C, with less than 3 nm and 4.5 nm in the over 60°C changes, respectively. Our proposed fully open FPI is an economical, robust, and simple-to-fabricate structure with the potential for mass production. This renders it an appealing option for practical optofluidics applications.

Abstract:In this review paper some recent advances on optical sensors based on photonic crystal fibres are reported. The different strategies successfully applied in order to obtain feasible and reliable monitoring systems in several application fields, including medicine, biology, environment sustainability, communications systems are highlighted. Emphasis is given to the exploitation of integrated systems and/or single elements based on photonic crystal fibers employing Bragg gratings (FBGs), long period gratings (LPGs), interferometers, plasmon propagation, off-set spliced fibers, evanescent field and hollow core geometries. Examples of recent optical fiber sensors for the measurement of strain, temperature, displacement, air flow, pressure, liquid-level, magnetic field, and hydrocarbon detection are briefly described.

Abstract:Signal processing for low-finesse fiber-optic Fabry-Perot sensors based on white-light interferometry is investigated. The problem is demonstrated as analogous to the parameter estimation of a noisy, real, discrete harmonic of finite length. The Cramer-Rao bounds for the estimators are given, and three algorithms are evaluated and proven to approach the bounds. A long-standing problem with these types of sensors is the unpredictable jumps in the phase estimation. Emphasis is made on the property and mechanism of the "total phase" estimator in reducing the estimation error, and a varying phase term in the total phase is identified to be responsible for the unwanted demodulation jumps. The theories are verified by simulation and experiment. A solution to reducing the probability of jump is demonstrated. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Pressure sensing plays an important role in many industrial fields; conventional electronic pressure sensors struggle to survive in the harsh environment. Recently microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fiber-optic Fabry–Perot (FP) pressure sensors have attracted great interest. Here we review the basic principles of MEMS fiber-optic FP pressure sensors and then discuss the sensors based on different materials and their industrial applications. We also introduce recent progress, such as two-photon polymerization-based 3D printing technology, and the state-of-the-art in this field, e.g., sapphire-based sensors that work up to 1200 °C. Finally, we discuss the limitations and opportunities for future development.

Abstract:Fabry–Pérot interferometers (FPIs) are designed to work near and off the absorption resonance of an electro-optic (EO) polymer. The near-resonance EO activity (EO coefficient r13∼25.4pm∕V at ∼1086nm) is enhanced over that off resonance (r13∼9.0pm∕V at ∼1526nm). The full width at half maximum of the FPI transmission band is ∼16nm near resonance compared to ∼22nm off resonance. The modulation performance can, therefore, be improved with a modulation ratio increased to ∼78% near resonance (at 1064nm) from ∼19% off resonance (at 1520nm). The modulation speed is approximately megahertz and can be increased to greater than gigahertz with improved circuit design.
