Abstract:Uniform bulk graft modification of vinyl monomers to polypropylene or polyethylene membranes was achieved by combining gamma (γ)-ray pre-irradiation-induced graft copolymerization and supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2)-swelling polymerization techniques. In the first step, the polymer membranes were irradiated with γ-rays originated from cobalt-60 resource under oxygen or air atmosphere at ambient temperature, and thus potential active sites, hydroperoxides and diperoxides, were uniformly formed on the polymer backbone. Then, graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers such as styrene, N-vinylpyrrolidone (N-VP), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) impregnated into polymer substrates with the aid of scCO2 was initiated thermally within the host polymer by the polymer radicals (PO) resulting from the decomposition of peroxides uniformly distributed in the irradiated polymer samples. The process parameters were controlled by the properties of the fluid phase (CO2/monomer mixture) and experimental conditions, such as monomer concentration, temperature and time. The bulk graft modification of polyolefin membranes was confirmed by element analysis, spectroscopy and microscopy.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were hydrophilic modified with hydroxyl group terminated hyperbranched poly(amine-ester) (HPAE). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to study the chemical change of PVDF membranes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that some HPAE molecules were retained in PVDF membrane through polymer chain coiling. The presence of HPAE would improve the hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of different membranes. The thermodynamic stability for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was characterized by the determination of the gelation values. Precipitation kinetics for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was studied by precipitation time measurement. The water contact angle indicated that the hydrophilicity and the biocompatibility corresponding to protein adsorption of PVDF membrane were improved significantly after blending with hydrophilic HPAE molecules. Abstract:Surface modification of microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes was performed by graft polymerization of acrylic acid. The effects of temperature, polymerization medium, monomer concentration and multifunctional cross-linker on the graft polymerization were studied. The grafting degree on the polypropylene membrane can be greatly increased upon the addition of divinylbenzene (DVB). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures demonstrated that PAA grafted mainly on the surface of the membrane. Mercury porosimetry analysis revealed that the grafting also took place within the pores. Contact angle and absorbed water measurements showed excellent wetting properties with water for the grafted membranes. The grafted membrane did not show high flux for ultrapure water because the grafting of AA plugs the pores of the membrane.

Abstract:2-Aminoethyl methacrylate(AEMA) was grafted onto the polypropylene microporous membrane by photo-induced polymerization to immobilize dextran. XPS spectra confirmed the chemical change of the membrane surface after the graft polymerization of AEMA and the immobilization of dextran. The water contact angle measurement indicated that the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface can be increased reparably by the dextran immobilization.

Abstract:A graft copolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with a glucose-carrying methacrylate, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose, was synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization technique with commercial PVDF as the macroinitiator. After a treatment with 88% formic acid, the isopropylidenyl groups of the precursor graft copolymer [poly(vinylidene fluoride)-g-poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose)] were converted into hydroxyl groups, and this produced an amphiphilic graft copolymer (PVDF-g-PMAG) [poly(vinylidene fluoride)-g-poly(3-O-methacryloyl-alpha,beta-D-glucopyranose)] with glycopolymer side chains and a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight <1.29). This glucose-carrying graft copolymer was characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. A novel porous membrane prepared from blends of PVDF with PVDF-g-PMAG via an immersion-precipitation technique exhibited significantly enhanced hydrophilicity and an anti-protein-adsorption property. Abstract:For surface modification of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), a two-step procedure based on a low-pressure plasma treatment followed by acrylic acid (AAc) grafting copolymerization was used. The influences of AAc concentration and grafting temperature on the hydrophilicity of film surface were studied. The wettability of the PTFE membrane surface was characterized by water contact angle, and the surface microstructures and compositions of the AAc-modified PTFE film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Contact angle measurements revealed that the hydrophilicity of the PTFE film surface was greatly enhanced by the grafting of the AAc chains, and the surface contact angle decreased from 126° to 64.8° after 6-h grafting of AAc under the condition of 30% (v/v) AAc at 70°C. The PTFE surface with a low contact angle was very effective in immobilization of chitosan. The amount of chitosan covalently immobilized on the carboxylic acid group-grafted PTFE was 64.5 μg/cm2 membrane as determined with the ninhydrin method and the water contact angle further decreased with the immobilization of chitosan.

Abstract:Hydrophilic modification of high-density polyethylene membrane was performed with the introduction of peroxide onto the membrane surface by corona discharge treatment, followed by graft polymerization with acrylic acid. The surface graft polymerization was confirmed by attenuated total reflection-infrared and X-ray photo spectroscopy. Surface hydrophilicity was investigated by measuring the contact angles and moisture adsorption of the modified membrane. The results indicated that the modified membrane showed a significant increase in hydrophilicity. And water flux of the film increased from 102 L/m(2) h of the virgin film to 200 L/m(2) h of the grafted film, while the bovine serum albumin solution flux of the membrane increased from 43 L/m(2) h of the virgin film to 98 L/m(2) h of the modified membrane.

Abstract:Surface modification of microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes was performed by radical-induced graft polymerization of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The influences of temperature, monomer concentration and pre-adsorbed amount of benzoyl peroxide on grafting degree were studied respectively. It was found that the appropriate graft temperature was 75 degreesC, at which the grafting degree was the highest and the hydrolytic decomposition of DMAEMA the lowest. Scanning electron photomicrography and the average pore diameters of the modified membranes demonstrated that part of the micropores on the membrane surface was plugged by the grafted polyDMAEMA chains, especially at high grafting degree. Contact angle and water swelling experiments showed that a moderate grafting degree could improve the hydrophilicity of the membranes. In the range of 11.3%-12.0% grafting degree, the water swelling percentage reached its maximum (51.1%) and the contact angle reached its minimum (74 degrees). The bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption experiment indicated that the grafted polyDMAEMA had a dual effect on protein adsorption. At the first stage, the BSA adsorption decreased with increasing of DMAEMA grafting degree. As the interaction between BSA and polyDMAEMA on membrane surface increased, the BSA adsorption increased with increasing of DMAEMA grafting degree.

Abstract:A polypropylene hollow fiber membrane (PPHFM) was obtained by UV grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) on the surface. The hydrophilicity of PPHFM was improved with water contact angle reduced from 82.3° to 73.6°. The photoinitiator and monomer concentration conditions had significant effects on the grafting rates. After modification, the pure water flux decreased, but the rejection rate was improved.

Abstract:A reversible addition-fragment chain transfer(RAFT) graft polymerization initiated by plasma,with hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) as the monomer,was used to modify the surface of porous polypropylene(PP) membrane for hydrophilicity improvement.After an investigation of the graft polymerization kinetic,the surface chemistry,the surface morphology and the porous structure of modified membranes were evaluated by FT-IR,SEM,mercury intrusion and water flux measurement.Results showed that the polymerization rate of the plasma-initiated RAFT graft polymerization was dramatically lowered relative to that without RAFT agent.The grafting amounts on modified surfaces exhibited a linear increase with the increasing of polymerization time,and simultaneously the pore sizes and the water fluxes of the modified membranes would be consecutively decreased.

Abstract:Membrane surfaces modified with polymers based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is promising for hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and functionality. In this work, the UV-induced graft polymerization of HEMA onto polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) was studied using ferric chloride (FeCl3) and benzophenone (BP) as co-photoinitiators with different methods for the first time. It was found that the conventional photoinitiator, BP, could not initiate the grafting polymerization of HEMA on the PPMM. Incorporation of FeCl3 into the reaction system remarkably enhanced the grafting of HEMA onto PPMM, which could be ascribed to the “synergistic effect” between Fe3+ and BP. Results indicated that the maximum grafting degree for the soak method, which added monomer, photoinitiators and membranes in acetone/water mixture together was 2.5-fold greater than that for the adsorption method. Therefore, the grafting degree of HEMA on the membrane surface could be modulated in a wide range through the variation of UV irradiation time, monomer concentration, and BP/FeCl3 ratio. The poly(HEMA)-modified membrane surfaces were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Static water contact angle of the membrane surface indicated a decrease from 145° to 42° with the grafting degree increasing from 0 to 35.67wt.%. Water drop lied on the modified surface with 35.67wt.% of grafting degree permeated completely into the membrane pores in 3s. Furthermore, these poly(HEMA)-tethered membranes showed well protein resistance and potential hemocompatibility due to the enhancement of surface hydrophilicity.

Abstract:To improve the anti-fouling performance of PVDF hollow fiber microporous membranes,the sulfobetaine zwitterion polymer,poly [2(methacryloyloxyethyl)ethyl]-dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium(polyMEDSA),was grafted from the outside surface of the membrane.Firstly,2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) polymer was tethered to the surface of PVDF hollow fiber membrane via atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) to provide active hydroxyl sites for the subsequent copolymerization.Then,the initiator cerium ion(Ce(IV)) was applied to generate the copolymeriation of MEDSA on the surface of polyHEMA-g-PVDF membrane and the modified membranes(polyMEDSA-c-polyHEMA-g-PVDF) were finally obtained.The hydrophilicity of the modified PVDF membrane was significantly enhanced and the membrane exhibited an excellent anti-protein-fouling performance.Compared to the nascent PVDF hollow fiber membrane,The hydrophilicityincreased by 33% and protein adsorption decreased by 45.7% on the outside surface of the modified membrane with grafting amount of 225.7μg/cm2,as well as,the relative flux recovery of it increased by 44%.
Improvement of the Antifouling Characteristics for Polypropylene Microporous Membranes by the Sequential Photoinduced Graft Polymerization of Acrylic Acid

Abstract:Surface modification of polypropylene hollow fiber microporous membranes (PPHFMMs) was performed by a sequential photoinduced graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) from water solution. Structural and morphological changes on the membrane surface were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Water contact angles of the membrane surfaces were also measured by the sessile drop method. Results of ATR/FT-IR indicated the successful graft polymerization of AA onto the membrane surface. Water contact angle of the modified membrane decreased with the increase of the grafting degree (GD). It showed 68° for the grafted membrane with a GD of 45.8wt.%, nearly 61° lower than that of the nascent one. The pure water fluxes of the studied membranes depending on GD and pH value were studied. It was found that the pure water flux increased with the increase of GD and the decrease of pH value. The antifouling characteristics for the PPHFMMs before and after surface modification were assessed by the filtration of activated sludge in a submerged membrane bioreactor for synthetic wastewater treatment. Results demonstrated that after continuous operation for about 85h, the flux recovery was 13.7% and 25.4% while the flux ratio was 1.00 and 2.52 for the nascent and grafted PPHFMMs, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a new scheme of graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) initiated by the generation of free radicals in a redox system was used to modify the surface of polyetherimide (PEI) membranes and to improve the antifouling and oil resistance properties. Various physicochemical characterization techniques (ATR-FTIR, XPS, TG, SEM, AFM, etc.) confirmed the successful grafting of hydrophilic monomers onto the PEI membrane surface. Further, the effects of different monomer concentrations on graft density, permeation separation, contamination resistance, and mechanical properties were investigated. Both PEI-g-PAA and PEI-g-PHEMA showed better hydrophilicity (WCA decreased from 60° in PEI to 33° and 45°, respectively), efficient separation (75–84%) in oil-containing wastewater filtration tests with methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and petroleum ether with a slight decrease in mechanical strength. In addition, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and MTBE were selected as contaminants to examine the antifouling properties. Compared to the flux recovery rate (FRR) of 75% for the original PEI membranes, the grafted membranes almost wholly recovered the permeate flux with a simple backwash of ultrapure water. In summary, the results of the above study suggest the development of a novel and simple preparation strategy for surface grafting modification of PEI membranes, which will facilitate the subsequent research of PEI materials in membrane development, and the resulting grafted membranes will be of developmental and exploratory value in the field of oil and water treatment.

Abstract:Amphiphilic graft copolymers are excellent additives for the development of antifouling membranes by nonsolvent induced phase separation. We report a convenient approach to the synthesis of novel graft copolymers with hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) backbones and hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) side chains. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate was carried out with poly(acrylonitrile-co-p-chloromethyl styrene) (PAN-co-PCMS) as a macroinitiator in the presence of CuCl/2,2′-bipyridine at 50 °C in dimethyl sulfoxide. Kinetics of the graft polymerization was also evaluated. The synthesis of poly(acrylonitrile-co-p-chloromethyl styrene-g-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PAN-co-(PCMS-g-PHEMA)) can be relatively controlled when CMS (the ATRP sites) unit in the macroinitiator is around 5 mol%. Both the macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by FTIR, NMR and GPC. The surface morphology and wettability of the copolymer films were studied by AFM and water contact angle measurement, respectively. We demonstrate that phase segregation between the PAN-co-PCMS backbones and the PHEMA side chains takes place and the surface hydrophilicity of the graft copolymers increases with the length of the PHEMA side chains. Because these amphiphilic graft copolymers can be synthesized in mass, they will be useful as latent additives for the fabrication of advanced PAN separation membranes.

Abstract:Polypropylene hollow fiber microporous membranes (PPHFMMs) were surface-modified by the photoinduced graft polymerization of acrylamide (AAm). Structural and morphological changes on the membrane surface were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Water contact angles of the membrane surfaces were also measured by the sessile drop method. Results of FT-IR/ATR indicated the successful graft polymerization of AAm onto the membrane surface. Water contact angle of the modified membrane decreased with the increase of the grafting degree. It showed 34.9° for the modified membrane with a grafting degree of 278.4wt.%, nearly 94° lower than that of the nascent one. The antifouling characteristics of the PPHFMMs before and after surface modification were assessed by the filtration of activated sludge in a submerged membrane bioreactor for synthetic wastewater treatment. It demonstrated that after continuous operation for about 42h, the flux recovery were 36.9, 63.7% and the relative flux ratio were 1.00, 1.32 for the nascent and modified PPHFMMs, respectively.

Abstract:Ozone treatment technique was used as a means of forming chemically active sites on Ultra-high-molecule-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) microfiltration membrane surface in this work. Then the graft polymerization of methylacrylate acid (MAA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was contacted with the active species. The surface graft polymerization of the unmodified and modified membrane was confirmed by ATR-FTIR and X-ray photospectroscopy. Surface hydrophilicity of the membrane investigated by measuring the contact angles showed a significant increase in hydrophilicity.

Abstract:Radiation-induced grafting Copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto poly(γ-methyl L-glutamate)(PMLG) membrane was researched in aqueous solution in the absence of oxygen. The grafted weight increases with increasing water content in the grafting system. According to the values of the contact angles, the surface free energy, the interfacial free energy, and the adhesive work of the membranes with deionized water were calculated. Photoacoustic fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy were used for chemical analysis for the study of the surface composition of grafted membrane. From scanning electron micrographs and wide-angle X-ray diffraction profiles we found that the radiation-induced graft copolymerization of HEMA onto PMLG membrane in water as solvent was carried out to be a graft in bulk.

Abstract:A novel method of surface modification by grafting hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains onto the surface of a thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was performed. Aminopolyethylene glycol monomethylether (MPEG-NH2) was used as grafting monomer. The membranes were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The changes in chemical composition and morphology of the membranes' surface indicated the successful grafting process. Furthermore, a preliminary experiment confirmed that the grafting of PEG chains improved membrane antifouling property.
