Abstract:The effect of annealing time on the hardness of the weld, M42 HSS and X32 high strength steel is studied by using the annealing furnace. The result shows that when annealing temperature is between 820 ℃ and 820 ℃,with the extension of heat preservation time,the weld hardness at the beginning of the annealing declines very fast, then slowly, and the hardness has a linear relationship with the logarithm of time. By OM, EPMA and XRD test methods, the microstructure and element distribution of welded joints in the M42 high speed steel-X32 high strength steel dissimilar steel and the formation and transformation rules of carbides in joints after annealing are analyzed. The result shows that after annealing, the recrystallization occurs in the microstructure of weld and organizes into isometric crystal, and carbide spheroidizing also occurs. The elements of the base metal in weld joints diffuse to weld,and form M6 C type carbide of Fe3W3 C, M23 C type carbide of Cr23 C,M6C type carbide. Some grain boundary and phase boundary increase because of these carbides, so as to promote the carbide spheroidizing and reduce the weld hardness.

Abstract:In a positive response to the Belt and Road initiative of China, the construction of international civil engineering program is proposed, and this program is urgently needed to train engineers serving for worldwide construction projects. This paper reports the practice of building International Civil Engineering program at the Nanjing Tech University. The background and target of this program are given, along with the organization and management of curriculum. The management of faculty members, establishment of regulations and facilities are introduced in this paper, followed by the discussion of the challenging problems and possible solutions.

Abstract:With the fast development of welding theory and computer finite element simulation analysis,the use of numerical simulation to predict the formation and distribution of welding residual stress can already get more satisfactory results.However,due to the limitations of the complexity of the welding process and numerical simulation,finite element simulation and the actual measured results are significantly different;so that the real-time measuring the welding residual stress is still necessary for engineering and research.Through the real-time monitoring of the welding process,and the resuts are compared with the finite element simulation results of welding process,the reasons of the difference of values between simulation and measuring on site are summarized,which shows the superiority of the actual monitoring of the welding process.Such real-time measuring technology can be used in structural health monitoring for welding steel structures.

Abstract:The intricate multiphysics coupling conditions and nonlinear characteristics inherent in carbon fiber composite induction welding render the temperature transfer properties of the interface and the fusion connection mechanism across different scales ambiguous. In this study, a transient 3D finite element model was developed to simulate the induction welding process of carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (CF/PPS) composites, utilizing an electromagnetic-thermal multiphysics coupling mechanism. This investigation revealed that the electromagnetic effect leads to the accumulation of magnetic flux and spatial constraints, thereby triggering an eddy current concentration effect at the interface, which serves as an additional influencing factor in induction welding's edge effect. Simultaneously, the temperature distribution at the induction welding interface exhibits a gradient characteristic over both time and space: fluctuations in the current heat source result in a pronounced gradient distribution pattern of 225 %-680 % in welding interface temperature differences, accompanied by a 43.29 % reduction in shear strength. Notably, this study delves into the intricate origin of the induction welding heat source, elucidating that the generation of induced current in the magnetic field by carbon fiber overlap contributes to volumetric heat induction. This facilitates the welding process to some extent, despite the significantly lower heat contribution compared to thermally conductive wire meshes. In conclusion, to gain deeper insights into the impact of heat input on the fusion behavior of the bonding interface, SEM analysis was conducted on the experimental samples to examine the fusion morphology of the induction welding interface. Additionally, the method of EDS elemental analysis has also been used to investigate the generation and fusion mechanisms of welding defects. The amalgamation of numerical simulation technology and multi-scale material characterization serves as a methodological guide for researching the welding mechanisms of composite materials and even extends to investigations within the domain of metal connections. Furthermore, it paves the way for exploring a multidimensional research horizon in the realm of material joining and molding.

Then we discuss the special welding process simulation technology and special software for welding simulation. Finally, the development of welding numerical simulation technology in China are concerned.

Abstract:The WC and high chromium cast iron (HCCI) welded layers were prepared on Q235 low carbon steel by hardfacing technique in order to improve high-temperature performance. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded layer were investigated. It was found that Fe3W3C is the major strengthening phase of the WC welded layer. Furthermore, a high-temperature three-body abrasive wear experiment was designed and conducted on the welded layers. The results show that the wear resistance of the WC welded layer was much better than that of the HCCI welded layer at both room and high temperatures. During the high-temperature abrasive wear process, the Fe3W3C phase can effectively strengthen the matrix and hence, contribute to improved wear resistance.

Abstract:Ferritic stainless steel has been applied frequently owing to its advantages such as good thermal conductivity, low coefficient of linear expansion, good stress corrosion resistance, and no Ni. However, the welding process will cause the grain size of the weld zone and the heat-affected zone to grow seriously, resulting in a decrease in the toughness of the welded joint. The paper discusses in detail the traditional and improved welding methods of ferritic stainless steel. These improved methods can effectively reduce the grain size or increase the penetration. The process of introducing electric and magnetic pulses can compress the arc, increase the weld penetration, stir the molten pool, refine the grains, and improve the strength and toughness of the weld. The future development direction of ferritic stainless steel welding is discussed at the end of the article.

Abstract:In recent years, for the structural characteristics and design requirements of the integral rotor and disc shaft of the integrated engine, the welding quality and mechanical properties of superalloy weldments have received increasing attention. In this paper, inertia friction welding (IFW) of FGH96 alloy was carried out using different welding parameters, and the homogeneous connection of FGH96 alloy hollow bars was successfully realized. The microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture failure of the welded joints at room and high temperatures were investigated. The FGH96 alloy IFW joints were divided into the weld nugget zone (WNZ), the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM), and there were significant differences in grain structure and distribution of the γ′ phase in each of the characteristic zones. The microhardness and tensile properties of the IFW joints were investigated, and the results showed an "M"-shaped curve in the microhardness distribution, with the lowest point of hardness observed in the HAZ. The tensile test results indicated that the fracture position moved from the BM to the WNZ with the increase in temperature, the microstructure at the fracture changed significantly and the tensile strength decreased from 1512.0 MPa at room temperature to 1201.3 MPa at 750 °C. The difference in the mechanical properties of the joints was mainly attributed to the changes in the dissolution and precipitation of the γ′ phase.

Abstract:The friction welding (FW) technology is a kind of solid-phase hot pressing welding method applied to the connection of similar or dissimilar materials. During the FW process, welding heat is generated by the pressure and high-speed relative motion between the joint interfaces of the workpieces. After the joint interfaces and their neighborhood arrive at the thermoplastic state, the workpieces are pressed into a whole by upsetting. FW has a wide range of weldability (e.g., carbon steel, alloy steel, non-ferrous metals, other materials of the same kind, dissimilar metal materials, and metal and non-metal materials with completely different properties) and can obtain welded joints with excellent properties (closed to base metal) and fewer defects (e.g., cracks, pores, and segregation); thus, it has high reliability to welded joints. As its advantages, FW exhibits low energy consumption (i.e., 10%–20% of fusion welding), high efficiency (i.e., only a few seconds to realize an effective joining of the workpieces), and environmental friendliness (i.e., no welding rod, wire, flux, or protective gas and no arc, spatter, smoke, or slag as in fusion welding) and can easily realize automation and large-scale production. FW is widely used in high-tech manufacturing in various industries, including in the automobile, aviation, aerospace, nuclear energy, oil drilling, marine development, and electric power industries. On the basis of the classification and the brief description of FW, the present situation of the research, development, and application of the continuous-drive FW (CDFW) technology was comprehensively sorted out and analyzed in-depth in this paper. This study involved the CDFW process characteristics and main process parameters, process exploration, influence of the process parameters on welded joint properties, numerical analysis, simulations, process parameter optimization, CDFW process innovation for dissimilar metals and non-metallic materials, practical engineering applications, and welding equipment, among others. The aspects of the potential applications of the FW technology, core scientific issues, research and development of the novel FW equipment, numerical analysis and simulation, and combination with emerging technologies associated with the CDFW technology were also reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:In the present study, by using the process of laser-MIG hybrid welding (LMHW) and raw material of invar steel wire, the effect of process parameters of LMHW on the surface macroscopic morphology and the distribution of internal defects of the weld was analyzed and a set of highly fault-tolerant, insensitive to assembly accuracy and stable optimal process parameters were determined. In addition, the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of welded joints under optimal parameters were analyzed. The results show that the laser power and arc power are positively and linearly related to the line energy density (LED). As the LED increased, the width and penetration of the weld increased gradually, but the effect on reinforcement was less. With the double-layer welding method, the defocusing distance, laser-arc distance, laser power and arc power were adopted to significantly inhibit the generation of porosity defects in the weld seam. The grains in the weld overheated zone grew in the cooling direction toward the weld zone to form columnar crystals, and the internal austenite organization took the lead. The average tensile strength and elongation of the weld were 422.3 MPa and 44.4%, reaching more than 96.1% and 71.2% of the base material, respectively, making the mechanical properties of the weld close to those of the base material.

Abstract:The induction welding has been recognized as one of potential and high-efficiency joining methods for thermoplastic composite materials. In this study, a numerical simulation model with containing both induction wielding heat transfer and joint tensile failure process for CF/PPS-Al alloy interlocking induction welding was established based on software COMSOL Multiphysics and Abaqus/Explicit. The CF/PPS-Al7075 interlocking welding joints with special designed macro-scale interlocking were tested under tensile loads, and the corresponding single-lap shear strength, energy absorption, and failure mechanisms were investigated by combining the experimental and numerical approaches. Finally, the influence of macro-scale interlocking geometric parameters on joint tensile strength was also discussed. The results indicate that the proposed model can effectively predict the temperature distribution in the welding process and the tensile failure process of the joint. It is also presented that the addition of macro-scale interlocking features can effectively improve the ultimate load (47%) of the CF/PPS-Al alloy induction welded joints. Meanwhile, the number of addition PPS films in the welding zone and the inclination angle have greater contribution on the tensile strength of the welded joints.
