Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid ZrOC/PF aerogel composite is successfully prepared via one sol-gel polymerization process, using PF and ZrOC sols as precursor, respectively. SEM, BET, FT-IR, and XPS measurements are used to investigate the effect of the mass ratio of ZrOC to PF on physical, microstructure, and thermal properties of the composite aerogels. Results show that the aerogels exhibit relative low density (0.258-0.332 g/cm(3)), relative high compressive strength (0.32-1.40 MPa), and low thermal conductivity (0.0466-0.0660 W/m.K). SEM images demonstrated that the particles are composed of the tangled clusters of the PF and ZrOC and the particle size ranges from a dozen nm to tens of nm, up to several microns. XPS results indicate that elements C, O, and Zr in the samples are based on C-C and Zr-O valences band binding, respectively. The ZrOC/PF aerogel with excellent physical property and potential high-temperature resistance may be used in aerospace in the near future.

Abstract:An overview of the literatures is presented on cellulose-silica organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels.According to the technological characteristics,cellulose-silica composite aerogels can usually be synthesized by three methods,i.e.solution impregnation method,direct mixing and layer-by-layer deposition.The dissolution or dispersion of cellulose and the introducing method of silica are discussed in detail,which are important influencing factors for compositing cellulose-silica aerogels.The characteristics of microstructures and crosslinking mechanisms of cellulose-silica aerogels are analyzed,and the properties in mechanics,thermal insulation,optics,hydrophobicity and biology are compared.Based on the physical and chemical properties of organic cellulose and inorganic silica,some of composite problems are discussed and some new ideas for further development are proposed.

Abstract:Hybrid hydrogels were synthesized by sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde added by colloidal silica solutions. Carbon/silica hybrid aerogels were prepared from the hydrogels by supercritical drying and carbonization. Carbon aerogels and silica aerogels were obtained by removing silica with HF etching and carbon with air burning from the hybrid aerogels respectively. Carbon xerogels were prepared by ambient drying,carbonization and HF etching from the hydrogels. The microstructures of the four kinds of gels were characterized by TEM and N2 adsorption. It is found that the carbon and silica frameworks are continuous and interpenetrated each other. The silica framework can improve the strength of hybrid gels,which can decrease the volume shrinkages by preventing collapse of the hybrid framework during supercritical drying and carbonization,resulting in carbon aerogels with high specific surface area of 934m2/g and large total pore volume of 3.9cm3/g.

Abstract:Hydrophobic mesoporous silica aerogels were synthesized using cheap industrial grade tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor by ambient pressure drying.The silica alcogels were prepared by acid-base sol-gel polymerization of the TEOS, the surfaces of silica alcogels were modified using trimethylchlorosilane/ hexamethyldisiloxane via simultaneous solvent exchange and surface modification. The attachment of trymethylsilyl (-Si(CH3)3) groups to the silica surface was confirmed by the presence of Si-CH3 peaks at 2963, 1256 and 845 cm−1 in the IR spectra. Properties of the aerogels were examined by SEM, TEM, XRD, BET and DTA-TG analyses. The results indicate that the aerogels in a typical amorphous state have a highly porous network with an average pore diameter in the range of 5–10 nm, have high specific surface area (931 m2/g) and are thermally stable up to 322 °C.
A novel graphene oxide/halloysite hybrid aerogel linked by glassy polymer

Abstract:In our previous research, origami graphene aerogel and halloysite aerogel were successfully prepared, and interesting results were also found in terms of structural self-reinforcement and stress to transfer behavior. As an aerogel, it is always the result of mechanical strength. Based on the previous research, we proposed the idea of preparing organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels using graphene oxide and halloysite. By using the glassy polymer Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as a medium, graphene oxide (GO) and halloysite (HNTs) are connected to the aerogel structure. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the hybrid aerogel were studied. The results showed that a semi-organic semi-inorganic halloysite-graphene aerogel (HGA) with a three-dimensional network structures were successfully prepared. Its pore structure was mainly mesopores, and its thermal stability was improved. HGA had good mechanical properties, even if the number of cycles was as high as 50 times, the mechanical strength was still at a relatively high level. HGA contains organic and inorganic networks, and load to transfer is easier than graphene aerogel transfer.

Abstract:Silica aerogels have already been recognized as potential candidates in the fields of thermal insulation, sorption, and separation, but the intrinsic brittleness and cumbersome preparation process limit their broad applications. In this work, a simple self-catalyzed gelling strategy was applied to prepare organic–inorganic in situ hybrid aerogels (OIHAs) derived from bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]amine (BTPA) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTES). The Si–CH3 groups from MTES make it possible for OIHAs to be prepared through ambient drying and exhibit good hydrophobicity. Owing to the alkalinity of the amine groups from BTPA, self-catalyed hydrolyzation and condensation reactions occur between two silicon precursors to build a uniform pearl-chain nanoporous structure. The high specific surface area and amine groups existing on the nanoskeleton surface of the obtained OIHAs endow them with fascinating CO2 capture ability up to 5.89 mmol/g at 298 K and 100 kPa, which are significantly higher than the values of other aerogels reported under the similar conditions. Furthermore, ultralow thermal conductivity (as low as 20.1 mW/(m·K) at 25 °C), high strength (up to 2.38 MPa), and great elasticity (fully recoverable elastic strain of 14%) are achieved together for the OIHAs due to the organic–inorganic in situ cross-linked architecture. The as-prepared OIHAs with versatile properties have great application prospects in the fields of building thermal insulation and CO2 capture. The self-catalyzed gelling strategy provides an alternative routine for the simple preparation of silica-based aerogels.

Abstract:Al2O3-C hybrid aerogels were prepared by a one-pot sol-gel method, supercritical n-hexane drying and carbonization using Al(NO3)3·9H2O as the Al2O3 source, resorcinol (R) and furfural (F) as carbon precursors, and propylene oxide (PO) as a gelation initiator.The effects of the Al2O3 contents, the R+F concentrations and the PO/Al molar ratios on the porosity of the hybrid aerogels were investigated using a constant R/F molar ratio of 0.5.It was found that the hybrid aerogels are all mesoporous with an average pore size below 20 nm.The crystalline structure of Al2O3 is γ-type, but its diffraction peaks are quite broad.The hybrid aerogels are monolithic when the Al2O3 content is below 5.31 wt% with an R+F concentration of 10 g/100 mL.The mesopore volume and size, BET surface area and external surface area all increase with increasing PO/Al molar ratio under otherwise identical conditions.The volume shrinkage decreases, carbonization yield increases and the density of the hybrid aerogel exhibits a maximum with an Al2O3 content of 4.93 wt%.The size and volume of the mesopores, and the external surface area decrease with the increasing R+F concentration at PO/Al ratios of 5 and 6, but increase with increasing R+F concentration at a PO/Al ratio of 4.

Abstract:A series of highly Nano-porous SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels were manufactured with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and zirconyl nitrate dihydrate (ZrO(NO3)2·2H2O) by the sol-gel method followed by supercritical drying technique. The prepared aerogels are performed by SEM, FT-IR and BET to characterize and analyze the morphology and pores structure of SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels. The results showed that: The areogels are the typical of nano pores in the interval between 1<Dp<30 nm; the specific surface areas varied from 300 to 620 m2/g with (SBET)MAX = 615.5 m2/g with 35 wt% Zirconia and the surface areas decreased with the increase of zirconia; The thermal conductivity attains 0.015 W/(m·k); a mass of Si-O-Zr bands existed in the aerogels indicating a homogeneous distribution of the components on the nano scale.

Abstract:New organic/inorganic hybrid silica-cellulose aerogels (SCAs) were prepared by the sol-gel process and supercritical drying. Microfibrillated celluloses (MFCs) were extracted by the acid hydrolysis of cotton pulps in 64wt% aqueous H2SO4 solution. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used to disperse silica sols and dissolve MFCs in order to suppress phase separation. The microstructures and phase characteristics were investigated by thermo-gravimetric (TG) analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption porosimetry. The silica-cellulose hybrid aerogels are provided with the structural and hydrophobic features of silica aerogels. The addition of MFCs results in the decrease of the hydrophobic property due to the increase of -OH groups.

Abstract:Silica aerogels have wide application prospect in high temperature heat insulation due to their low density and high porosity. However, the brittleness and high cost of supercritical drying restrict their application. In this study, spongy silicone aerogels with high flexibility were prepared via Sol-Gel polymerization and atmospheric pressure drying using vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and vinylmethyldimethoxysilane (VMDMS) as precursors. The effects of precursor molar ratio on the microstructure and compressive resilience of aerogels, as well as the inorganic transformation process of aerogels in high temperature aerobic and anaerobic environments were studied. The results show that with the increase of VTMS/VMDMS ratio in the precursor, the aerogel particles become smaller and more tightly packed, and the compression resilience of aerogels also decreased. In air at 800 degrees C, aerogels were transformed into inorganic SiO2 by oxidation of organic side groups, fracture and rearrangement of main chain Si-O-Si. In N-2 at 800 degrees C, aerogels were transformed into the mixture of inorganic SiO2 and free carbon by pyrolysis reaction, and after further treatment at 1000-1400 degrees C, SiO2 and free carbon were subjected to carbothermal reduction reaction to form amorphous Si-O-C structures such as SiO4, SiCO3, SiC2O2, and SiC3O, and a small amount of beta-SiC nanowires. The Si-O-C structure formed by carbothermal reduction reaction at 1200 degrees C has optimal high temperature oxidation resistance, which can provide reference for the preparation of pyro-oxidation resistant Si-O-C aerogels.
Organic Aerogels As Precursors For The Preparation Of Porous Carbons

Abstract:Organic aerogels represent an interesting new class of materials and as the basis for the generation of new carbonaceous materials, both finding application in catalytic and adsorbent technology.(1) These are prepared via the synthesis of an aqueous colloidal gel composed Of Suitable precursors. The gel state is generated by the formation of new chemical (i.e. polymerisation), and physical (i.e. hydrogen bonding) bonds, as ageing proceeds. The colloidal gel has a well-developed micro- and mesoporosity as well as large surface area. By fine-tuning the synthesis conditions, the pore architectures may be controlled. The solvent is subsequently removed to yield the aerogel, via extraction by supercritical fluids. For that CO2 is a rational choice as its critical point can be easily reached, and offers a wide range of temperatures and pressures, facilitating another dimension in material property control. The most commonly used precursors to generate the gel state are formaldehyde and resorcinol or its derivatives(2), but may also be prepared from the aqueous gelation and self-assembly of biomass derived polysaccharides.The transformation of organic aerogels via a controlled non-oxidative pyrolysis step, to produce low-density carbons is of increasing interest as the advantages of these materials become more evident. Carbon aerogels are chemically and mechanically more stable than the organic predecessor, provide excellent conductivity, and can be employed at high temperatures and pH. Control of carbon aerogel textural and surface properties is possible by selection of different organic precursors and careful selection of thermal treatment parameters. Interestingly, polysaccharide xerogels and aerogels may also be transformed into like carbons. which are termed Starbons (R)(3).Because of close relationship between certain organic and carbon aerogels in this chapter attention will be given to both. A detailed introduction to the synthesis and processing, characterisation and application of organic and carbon aerogels will be presented. The physical and chemical characteristics of these materials will be discussed in detail, with particular regard to density, specific surface area and porosity. Applications of aerogels will also be introduced, with a particularly accent on their use as heterogeneous catalyst supports. Future prospects for this exciting class of materials will also be proposed.
Organic-Inorganic Hybridization For The Synthesis Of Robust In Situ Hydrophobic Polypropylsilsesquioxane Aerogels With Fast Oil Absorption Properties

Abstract:In situ hydrophobic polypropylsilsesquioxane aerogels (PSAs) were successfully synthesized via an organic-inorganic hybridization method by a sol-gel process, in which propyltriethoxysilane (PTES) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were used as co-precursors. Si-29 NMR and FTIR analyses indicated the high degree of condensation of the precursors and proved the attachment of propyl (-C3H7) groups in PSAs, respectively. By means of incorporating propyl groups, both mechanical robustness and in situ hydrophobicity were obtained. Meanwhile, the mechanical strength, contact angle and density obviously increased with the increase in propyl groups. Under optimized conditions, as-prepared PSA could endure up to a 70% maximum linear compression with few cracks. Benefiting from the robust structure and in situ hydrophobicity, PSAs showed high absorption capacities (8-10 times that of its own weight) and fast absorption properties (< 20 s) for a wide range of organic solvents and could be reused at least 5 times.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid-silica aerogels can be made of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS, CH 3 Si(OCH 3 ) 3 ) and dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS, Si(OCH 3 ) 2 (CH 3 ) 2 ) in a typical sol-gel process yielding flexible and hydrophobic structures. In this work, MTMS and DMDMS were condensed with an increasing amount of water, leading to a decrease in the final materials density from ∼ 0.110 g cm −3 down to ∼0.066 g cm −3 . The gels were synthesized in a one-pot synthesis and dried under ambient pressure conditions at 80 °C. While the topology of the network remained intact, the size of secondary particles decreased from roughly 8.2 to 3.3 μm. The inter-particle neck thickness remained unaffected with increasing aging time for higher dilutions. The measured thermal conductivities were all in similar range (∼ 32.5 mW (m K) −1 at 25 °C), showing very good insulation characteristics. In general, higher diluted samples exhibited increasing softness and decreasing Young's modulus, even with increased aging times. Overall, our optimized recipe leads to hydrophobic aerogels with ultralow densities while demonstrating very low thermal conductivity and a flexible mechanical performance.

Abstract:Hydrophobic and hydrophilic silica aerogels were prepared from cheap waterglass precursors via surface modification of wet gels, ambient pressure drying (APD) route and calcination treatment. Xerogel was also synthesized as a comparison to test the influence of microstructure on the adsorption behaviours. Ethanol (EtOH)/chlorotrimethylsilane (TMCS)/hexane solution was employed to replace the surface silanol groups (SiOH) with alkyl, and to prevent the condensation and shrinkage of the gel structure during the APD process. The synthesized silica aerogels, characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurement, element analyses and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), etc., are porous and translucent solids with surface area of 546–907 m2/g. The transition temperature from hydrophobic to hydrophilic was tested around 395 °C, which corresponds to the disappearance temperature of the CH3 peaks in FTIR. The materials were tested for adsorption capacities on rhodamine B (RhB) and dieldrin, which represented soluble and slightly soluble organic compounds, respectively. Results showed that the hydrophobic silica aerogel exhibited strong adsorption capacity on slightly soluble organic compounds while hydrophilic silica aerogel was much more effective on adsorbing soluble compounds from aqueous solution. Adsorption properties of the silica aerogel remain stable after 5 adsorption/desorption cycles.

Abstract:In this work, a compound state of silica-titania aerogel was investigated through sol-gel reaction for hybridization of silica and titania with increasing reactivity by using high surface area and charge imbalances. By minimizing the sol-gel reaction rate difference and preparing a homogeneous and stable sol, a compound state of silica-titania aerogel could be obtained, without separation onto single metal oxide aerogel. The benefits of using the sol-gel synthesis method for synthesizing silica-titania compound aerogels are over a limit of substitution solubility and get binary metal oxide compound material. Diffraction and spectroscopic analyses showed that the heterogeneous linkage resulted from interaction among silicon, titanium, and oxygen ions. The coordination environment changes by the formation of an Si-O-Ti linkage following interaction among ions without phase separation on SiO2 and TiO2 aerogels. Thus, the atomically controlled sol-gel reaction can be used to design new metal-oxide-based compound aerogels and immiscible oxide materials.

Abstract:Monolithic SiO;-Al;O; composite aerogel using inorganic aluminum salt as raw material was prepared by a sol-gel method,followed by C2H5 OH supercritical fluid drying. The changes of phase structures during thermal treatment were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（ FTIR） and X-ray diffraction（ XRD） technique. The micro-morphology and structures were investigated by scanning electron microscope（ SEM） and transmission electron microscope（ TEM）. Nitrogen adsorptiondesorption isotherm was used to investigate the changes of pore structures during the heating process.Results showed that SiO; existed as amorphous state and Al;O; mainly existed as boehmite consisited of fibrous particles and weblike microstructures. When the heat treatment temperature reached to 1 100 ℃,the mullite began to appear in the composite aerogel. The specific surface area decreased with the increase of thermal treatment temperature,but it remained 416. 23 m;/ g until 1 000 ℃. Abstract:Silica aerogels are the lightest materials with a typical interconnected nanostructure. They have received much attention due to their extraordinary properties and their potential applications in many fields. Conventionally silica aerogels have been made by supercritical drying process which is complicated, expensive and unsafe to a certain extent. In order to promote the production of silica aerogels on a large scale and for commercial applications, it is urgently necessary to probe the preparing technique of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying at a reasonable cost. In recent years, significant developments in the ambient pressure drying technique have been achieved. This article gives an overview of the recent research progresses in preparation methods of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying technique and the most updated information in preparation of silica aerogel composite materials. Silica aerogel composite materials reinforced by fiber and polymer improve the mechanical properties and further widen the application areas of silica aerogels.
Preparation and Characterization of Composite SiO2 Aerogel by a Novel One-step Modified Process

Abstract:A composite of silica hydrogel with ceramic fibers (15% in mass fraction) was synthesized with sodium silicate as a precursor and deionized water as a solvent by a sol?gel method, and the composite was subsequently modified with a solution of ethanol/trimethylchlorosilane/n-hexane via one-step solvent exchange and surface modification, thus obtaining the crack-free and high hydrophobic composite aerogel monoliths. The composite aerogel has a low density of 0.216 g/cm3 and a superior formability. The ceramic fibers can be dispensed into the sample and combined with the silica aerogel network. There is a spongy meshwork structure on the surface of the aerogel. The aerogel samples were characterized by microstructure, analysis, specific surface area measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, hydrophobicity, elastic modulus and thermal conductivities test, respectively. The results show that the specific surface area of the composite aerogel is 743 m2/g, the contact angle with water is 146°, and the elastic modulus is 5.1 MPa. After a thermal process in the temperature range from room temperature to 400 ℃, the hydrophobicity remains unchanged (about 138°), and the thermal conductivity of composite aerogel monoliths changes from 0.026 3 W/(m·K) to 0.051 2 W/(m·K). In addition, the mechanisms of solvent exchange and surface modification were also discussed.
