Abstract:Large-scaled highly oriented carbon nanotube films on Si substrate with Ni as a catalyst were synthesized by hot-filament-enhanced CVD and field-emission properties of the films were studied.It has been discovered that there is a knee-point E s on Fowler-Nordheim curves of the nanotube films,the slope of F-N curve in the low field region is much higher than that in the high field region.The field-enhancement factor β is proportional to the distance d between the anode and the cathode,and E s is an inverse measure of the distance d. Both of them can be phenomenally interpreted by the two-region field-emission model.The possible mechanisms for the saturation of emitter current on high field region have been discussed.

Abstract:Large-area and homogeneous single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films have been deposited via arc discharge directly on glass substrate coated with a layer of indium tin oxide film. The characterization, by means of electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, shows that the as-grown films are uniformly woven and consist of SWCNT with diameters ranging from 0.82 to 1.15nm. As a cathode material, the field emission test indicates the films have low turn-on field of ∼1.2V/μm at 10μA/cm2 emission current, and high emission intensity causing luminance of about 7000cd/cm2 with fine uniformity. The best performing sample exhibits a constant degradation of less than 3% per hour at an emission current of around 1mA. Measuring with the high voltage (2000V) on the films for 2.0h increased the field enhancement factor from 4500 to 5400 at the high field region. The results are of significance to the development of field emission display using nanoemitters.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are synthesized on the silicon nanowire arrays which are fabricated on silicon substrate by chemical vapor depositing SiCl4 and H2 gases in the presence of Au catalysts. The silicon nanowires are single-crystal with lengths up to 100μm and diameters ranging from 50 to 500nm. The tangled carbon nanotubes are grown directly from the surface of Si nanowires. The field emission properties of the carbon nanotubes are investigated at the gap of 200μm. The low turn on and threshold fields are obtained. The stabilization of the emission currents is also presented.

Abstract:We have successfully demonstrated the multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based field emission cathode fabricated on highly porous, flexible and conductive carbon fiber (CF) sheet without damage of CF sheet by chemical vapor deposition. CF sheet was composed of thin fibers with diameter of about 3 μm prepared by electrospray deposition. Well aligned MWCNTs grown on, or well anchored to, the flexible CF sheet was confirmed by transmission electron microscope. The field enhancement factor for MWCNT emitter fabricated on CF sheet was about 14,000 and 1.6 times higher than that of MWCNT emitter fabricated on Si substrate. Scanning electron microscopy image indicates that the electron emission occurred from the MWCNT field emitter arrays grown on carbon fibers not only at surface but also under layers in CF sheet. Field emission measurements revealed that this flexible MWCNT field emitter array has a great potential for the flexible field emission displays.

Abstract:We have synthesized carbon nanotubes by thermal chemical vapor deposition of C2H2 on transition metal-coated silicon substrates. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are uniformly synthesized on a large area of the plain Si substrates, different from previously reported porous Si substrates. It is observed that surface modification of transition metals deposited on substrates by either etching with dipping in a HF solution and/or NH3 pretreatment is a crucial step for the nanotube growth prior to the reaction of C2H2 gas. We will demonstrate that the diameters of carbon nanotubes can be controlled by applying the different transition metals.

Abstract:Summary form only given. We present a simple technology for the fabrication of CNTs films cathode by utilizing method of rubbing CNT powders onto the polished substrates. The metallic substrates were polished by 10000 mesh white fused alumina powder at first. Then, the CNTs were rubbed on them. After that process, the metallic substrates were covered by CNTs films uniformly and firmly, as characterized by scanning electron microscope and scotch tape peeling tests. The field-electron-emission properties of such films cathodes were investigate under the vacuum of 10-5 Pa. The experimental results showed that the field-emission image of the films was nearly uniform and the emission current was considerably large. The turn-on field (the field at an emission current density of 10μA/cm ) was 3.4V/μm. The emission current density of 1.31mA/cm was obtained at the electric field of 6.1 V/μm, and emission current was almost stable in more than 60 minutes under about ImA/cm .

Abstract:Large-scale aligned silicon carbonitride (SiCN) nanotube arrays have been synthesized by microwave-plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition using SiH4, CH4, and N2 as precursors. The three elements of Si, C, and N are chemically bonded with each other and the nanotube composition can be adjusted by varying the SiH4 concentration, as revealed by electron energy loss spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The evolution of microstructure of the SiCN nanotubes with different Si concentrations was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The dependence of field emission characteristics of the SiCN nanotubes on the composition has been investigated. With the increasing Si concentration, the SiCN nanotube exhibits more favorable oxidation resistance, which suggests that SiCN nanotube is a promising candidate as stable field emitter.

Abstract:Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition is an extremely versatile technique for directly growing multiwalled carbon nanotubes onto various substrates. We will demonstrate the deposition of vertically aligned nanotube arrays, sparsely or densely populated nanotube forests, and precisely patterned arrays of nanotubes. The high-aspect ratio nanotubes (~50 nm in diameter and 5 microns long) produced are metallic in nature and direct contact electrical measurements reveal that each nanotube has a current carrying capacity of 10 7 -10 8 A/cm 2 , making them excellent candidates as field emission sources. We examined the field emission characteristics of dense nanotube forests as well as sparse nanotube forests and found that the sparse forests had significantly lower turn-on fields and higher emission currents. This is due to a reduction in the field enhancement of the nanotubes due to electric field shielding from adjacent nanotubes in the dense nanotube arrays. We thus fabricated a uniform array of single nanotubes to attempt to overcome these issues and will present the field emission characteristics of this.

Abstract:Electron emission from vertically aligned carbon nanotubes grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been measured using a parallel plate anode and a 1 mum tungsten probe. The field emission characteristics were measured as a function of the nanotube diameter, length, and areal density. It was found that less densely populated "short and stubby" nanotubes with diameters of 200 nm and heights of 0.7 mum showed the best emission characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2 V/mum and saturation emission current density of 10 mA/cm2. A triple junction between nanotube, substrate, and vacuum is proposed to explain our results. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Field emission results from a new form of carbon thin film are reported. The films contain carbon nanoparticles (nanotubes, "onions" and "eggs") within an amorphous carbon matrix and are deposited using a carbon are with a localized high-pressure gas region of He of N-2. The films formed in an N-2 environment have a nitrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:N) matrix and show clear Fowler-Nordheim-type metallic field emission characteristics. The field emission is very similar to that obtained from pure, randomly oriented multi-wall and single-wall nanotube films. It is proposed that the new a-C:N/nanoparticle films emit electrons through conducting channels formed in the film, subsurface field emission into the a-C:N matrix and hot electron surmounting of the surface potential barrier between the a-C:N and vacuum. Field enhancement factors of over 1000 are calculated for the thin film emitters when the nanoparticle work function is taken as 5 eV. This class of a-C:N/ nanoparticle film has the potential to be a thin film equivalent to carbon nanotubes in terms of field emission.

Abstract:The synthesis of massive arrays of monodispersed carbon nanotubes that are self-oriented on patterned porous silicon and plain silicon substrates is reported. The approach involves chemical vapor deposition, catalytic particle size control by substrate design, nanotube positioning by patterning, and nanotube self-assembly for orientation. The mechanisms of nanotube growth and self-orientation are elucidated. The well-ordered nanotubes can be used as electron field emission arrays. Scaling up of the synthesis process should be entirely compatible with the existing semiconductor processes, and should allow the development of nanotube devices integrated into silicon technology.

Abstract:Aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) films are potential field emitters for large-area flat panel displays. However, the distribution of emission areas in the CNT films is quite nonuniform because of inhomogeneous nanotube growth. which is hard to avoid using the conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Here we show that the emission uniformity of CNT films can be improved simply by reducing the film thickness (thinning) or the nanotube density (diluting). The thickness and density of CNT films could be controlled by controlling the CNT growth time and temperature.

Abstract:In order to improve the performance of field emitters nowadays, carbon nanotubes are used instead of conventional materials such as silicon and metals. In this paper, field emission characteristics of three different multi-wall carbon nanotube films have been compared, which are fabricated by different methods, including direct growth, evaporation coating and flow assembly. The field emission current-voltage property of each film has been characterized experimentally, and the electric field enhancement factor has been analyzed using Fowler-Nordheim theory. Moreover, emission stability of each film has been measured too. It can be concluded that the direct-grown vertical multi-wall carbon nanotube array has turn-on field of 0.603 V/mum and current density fluctuation less than 5%, which is much lower than the other films by post-treatment processes.

Abstract:The uniformity in field emission from a carbon nanotube film is very important to many applications. A study has been carried out to obtain uniform emission from multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) films by electrical treatment. The electrical treatment is based on local vacuum breakdown of CNTs under direct-current conditions. The optimal current density was found, under which the best effect of the treatment may be observed. The physical mechanism responsible for the effect of local vacuum breakdown of CNTs on emission uniformity was investigated.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are grown, as opposed to being lithographically defined, with diameters between 1.3 - 100 nm and lengths of a few micrometers. They have the 'natural' geometry required for field emission. The challenge is to develop a technology which allows the CNTs to be incorporated into a field emission cathode back plane together with the required gating and contact structures.

Abstract:The ability to grow carbon nanotubes/nanofibres (CNs) with a high degree of uniformity is desirable in many applications. In this paper, the structural uniformity of CNs produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition is evaluated for field emission applications. When single isolated CNs were deposited using this technology, the structures exhibited remarkable uniformity in terms of diameter and height (standard deviations were 4.1 and 6.3% respectively of the average diameter and height). The lithographic conditions to achieve a high yield of single CNs are also discussed. Using the height and diameter uniformity statistics, we show that it is indeed possible to accurately predict the average field enhancement factor and the distribution of enhancement factors of the structures, which was confirmed by electrical emission measurements on individual CNs in an array.

Abstract:Flexible and free-standing well-aligned carbon nanotube arrays have been synthesized on super-aligned carbon nanotube films. The combined structure of the carbon nanotube array and carbon nanotube film was formed during chemical vapor deposition on a quartz substrate which had previously been covered with a super-aligned carbon nanotube film. It was found that the growing carbon nanotube array could support up the super-aligned carbon nanotube film entirely, and the top of the array became densely entangled with the super-aligned carbon nanotube film. The carbon nanotube array with the super-aligned carbon nanotube film could be easily peeled off from the quartz substrate as a whole, giving a flexible and free-standing structure with good mechanical properties. The bottom of the array was also exposed after being peeled off and was used as a field emitter. The combined structure of the carbon nanotube array with the carbon nanotube film allowed adsorbent-free field emission by passing a heating current through it. Furthermore, due to the fast thermal response of the structure and the long time needed for re-adsorption of adsorbates in vacuum, it was found that pulsed heating with a 10% duty ratio was sufficient for adsorbent-free field emission. The heating power necessary to sustain the adsorbent-free state can be lowered in this way.

Abstract:Thin-walled, open-ended, and well-aligned N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the quartz slides were synthesized by using acetonitrile as carbon sources. As-obtained products possess large thin-walled index (TWI, defined as the ratio of inner diameter and wall thickness of a CNT). The effect of temperature on the growth of CNTs using acetonitrile as the carbon source was also investigated. It is found that the diameter, the TWI of CNTs increase and the Fe encapsulation in CNTs decreases as the growth temperature rises in the range of 780–860°C. When the growth temperature is kept at 860°C, CNTs with TWI = 6.2 can be obtained. It was found that the filed-emission properties became better as CNT growth temperatures increased from 780 to 860°C. The lowest turn-on and threshold field was 0.27 and 0.49 V/μm, respectively. And the best field-enhancement factors reached 1.09 × 10 5 , which is significantly improved about an order of magnitude compared with previous reports. In this study, about 30 × 50 mm 2 free-standing film of thin-walled open-ended well-aligned N-doped carbon nanotubes was also prepared. The free-standing film can be transferred easily to other substrates, which would promote their applications in different fields.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube(CNT)films with special surface morphology,such as hills-like and stars-like,were synthesized on silicon substrate,and the field emission properties were examined.The nanotubes were fabricated by thermal chemical vapor deposition using co-sput- tered NiTi alloy film as catalyst.The hills-like and stars-like CNT films showed good field emission properties of low turn-on electric field and large current density.The turn-on electric field values required to obtain a 10μA /cm~2 current density for hills-like and stars-like CNT films were determined at about 1.02 V/μm and 1.15 V/μm,respectively.At an applied mac- roscopic field of 2.4 V/μm,the current densities reached to 4.32 mA/cm~2 and 6.88 mA/cm~2, respectively.The field enhancement factorβof hills-like and stars-like CNT films,calculated from the Fowler-Nordheim plots,were about 10113 and 6840.The good field-emission be- havior is ascribed to the combined effects of the intrinsic field emission of CNT and the rough morphology of the film surface.
