Abstract:In order to design a more perfect optical low pass filter(OLPF),this paper employs analytical method of optical transfer function to different structure of OLPF on base of the analysis of the optical characteristic of birefringent crystal and presents the amplitude frequency response characteristics of OLPF.The result of analysis shows that the thickness of birefringent crystal determines the cut-off frequency of filters,thus,for multi-plate OLPF,an improving design,modifies the spectral response of filter at high frequency and comes to being a more effective OLPF.

Abstract:To restrain the high spatial frequency which is higher than the photoelectric image sensors sampling frequency,a two-dimensional crystal optical low pass filter(OLPF)is designed,fabricated and tested.Our device consists of two birefringence plates and a half wave plate.On the front and back surfaces of the OLPF.an antireflection film and an infrared cutting film are plated.The test results show that the antact angle is less than 20°,the transmission in the visible light range and infrared light range is above 90% and less 2% respectively,the high spatial frequency is restrained very well.These reveal that our crystal OLPF can match with the photoelectric image sensor and has a good restraining high spatial performance.
Fabrication and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Optical Low Pass Filter

Abstract:Two-dimensional optical low pass filter (OLPF) was designed, fabricated and tested in our lab. The modulation transfer function (MTF) of OLPF shows that cut-off frequency is 96.151p/mm in x and y direction, which is satisfied with our design. The transmissions in the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum are mostly above 95% and less than 2%, respectively. The error of every plate thickness is tested less than 0.34% by the experiment of pulse response. The spatial frequency test results show that our device has good low filter performance, matches with the solid state image sensor and well restrains the moire effect and false colors distortion.

Abstract:The principle of design of polarization band_pass filters used for wavelength d ivision multiplexing systems is presented. The design method is based on the con cept of thin_film photonic crystal superlattice. Two kinds of design are put for ward. One of them is to construct by superposition of two photonic crystals; and the other is to insert a new photonic crystal into the middle of a photonic cr ystal, so that there are in effect three photonic crystals. Such band_pass filte rs have excellent optical properties with p_polarization transmittance and s_pol arization reflectance. The characteristics of the filters, including peak transm ittance, half_band width and rejection are discussed.

Abstract:To evaluate the performance of optical low pass filter (OLPF) accurately, a new 2D digital imaging system model including an OLPF was created for the first time using the modular transfer function (MTF). An evaluation function was also established based on this model. To manifest the model and its evaluation, three typical OLPFs were studied. The results show that the Delta value of each filter undergoes a slow and slight decrease and then rapidly increases when the ideal optical system cutoff frequency is increased. The optieal system embedded with the 2-chip-4-point type OLPF created a better image than those with the other two OLPF's when the F number is greater than 4.4; whereas the OLPF of 3-chip-8-point type worked best when the F number is lower than 4.4. When the F number of the optical system is 2.8, namely, with a spatial cutoff frequency of 649 lp/mm, the filter of 3-chip-8-point type performs better than that of the 2-chip-4-point and 3-chip-4-point types. The Delta value of the first filter is 28.3% and 37.5%, lower than that of the other two filters, respeatively. That is, the filter performance is 28.3% and 37.5% higher. Finally, spatial frequency test shows that the moire fringe and false colors can be seen in the last two pictures, while in the first, these effects are well eliminated. The theoretical calculations agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:A digitalization measurement method of structure parameters of optical low-pass filter (OLPF) is presented in this paper. OLPF which comprises two or three crystal plates is adopted in front of the CCD to reduce aliasing in a digitized image. Transiting a triple plate OLPF, an object of the point-source light can separate into eight points which are imaged in CMOS array. The distance of point to point provides us with the information of thickness of each crystal plate. The accuracy of measurement is better than 0.15 mu m.

Abstract:Sampling of photoelectric imaging system could infinitely replicate the scene spectrum in spectrum space.If the sampling intervals were too large to satisfy the Nyquist criterion,the replicas would be overlapped and there was aliasing.The optical transfer function could demonstrate that how the optical imaging,integral sampling and reconstruction affected the overall performance.The optical transfer function was used for analysis of the photoelectric imaging system with OLPF.The results show that optic low-pass filter could effectively limit the scene spectrum width and critically satisfy Nyquist sampling condition,so the aliasing could be eliminated and quality of the image reconstructed is improved.

Abstract:A two-dimensional system model, including the birefringent low-pass filter (BLF), was designed and a cost function was formulated. This model takes optical system into account in designing BLF. Optimization of the parameter of BLF is acquired by this new method. Best performance of BLF is realized when distance d of o light and e light is about half size of a pixel. Moreover, the relation between the optimized distance d and the cutoff frequency of ideal optical system was established. It is proved that the optimized distance d becomes smaller when the cutoff frequency of optical system increases.

Abstract:Based on the theory of photonic crystals and the framework of a single-channel reflection filter that we presented before, structures of reflection filters with multiple channels are proposed. These structures can overcome some drawbacks of conventional multichannel transmission filters and are much easier to fabricate. We have practically fabricated the reflection filters with two and three channels, and the tested results show approximate agreement with theoretical simulation. Moreover, the superprism effect is also simulated in the single-channel reflection filter, the superiorities to transmission filters are discussed, and these analyses may shed some light on new applications of reflection filters in optical communication and other systems.

Abstract:A new type of filter based on one-dimensional photonic crystals is presented. A photonic crystal consists of a periodic repetition of air layers and epsilon-negative (ENG) material layers. This type of filter has high-Q values without defects. The Q values and the filtering frequency can be precisely adjusted by modulating the thicknesses of the ENG material layers and the air layers, respectively. A method of deciding the position of the transmission band for the photonic crystals is presented. The effect of absorption of ENG materials on the filter is also considered.

Abstract:We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposition method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems.

Characteristic Analysis of Optical Low Pass Filter Used in Digital Camera

Abstract:Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) is composed of several birefringent crystals (e.g. three quartz-crystals). A light spot can be separated into several divergent light spots after passing OLPF. This characteristic can be widely used in digital camera and other image-forming system. The imaging beam in practical use is wide spectral and convergent, which causes dispersion and deformation. This paper hereby analyzes and simulates the characteristics of frequency response, dispersion and broad-angle-incident of the OLPF in theory and in experiment. Firstly, several birefringent crystals with proper alignment are introduced into OLPF to get a better frequency response. Compared with the OLPF with one crystal, its side-lobe is suppressed to a great extent without obvious deterioration in the main-lobe. Secondly, although the original dispersion is already acceptable according to optical aberration allowance, the maximum dispersion can be reduced from 8.49% to 5.66% of the pixel-pitch of CCD by changing one of the crystals from positive crystal (quartz) to negative crystal (e.g. calcite) with the same frequency response. Thirdly, broad-angle-incident is analyzed and simulated as a further research. Suppose a conical beam which converging at the CCD passes a birefringent crystal, a circle and ellipse-like faculae instead of two circles will be got. The error is less than 25% of the ideal offset when the incident angle is as large as 14 degrees. The OLPF with two or three crystals can be analyzed in the same way. The characteristics analyzed above are coincident perfectly with simulation in Tracepro and experiment results. Consequently, regular OLPF can meet the requirements of wide spectral range and broad-angle-incident optical system.

Abstract:An optical low pass filter (OLPF) used in front of the sensor of a CCD camera was designed, according to the birefringent effect of quartz crystal and infrared cut-off optical filter. When a object is imaged on the discrete photoelectric detector at different spatial frequencies, OLPF can reduce the frequency-mixing phenomenon effectively and eliminate the effect of infrared light on color rendition to improve image quality of the CCD camera. Especially, when the objects such as fringes or grates are imaged on the sensor of the CCD camera, it can enhance the image distinction and eliminate the effects of the disturbing fringes of false color. Based on analyzing the operational principle of OLPF and function of IR-CUT optical filter, a special IR-CUT coating is designed to make the CCD camera obtain colored image in daytime and black-white image at night. The coating is deposited on thin quartz crystal sheet with double ion beam sputter technique, the measuring results show that the spectral character and image quality are perfect.

Abstract:Optical filters are crucial devices for wavelength channel selecting in WDM fiber-optic communication networks.To measure the inner physical parameters of optical filters is significant for analyzing emerging new and more complex structures.A general and easy-to-operate method is proposed to extract physical parameters for complex filter structures with optical low-coherence measurement.By treating optical filters with digital filter concepts and Z-transform analysis,we can build the relation between interferogram peak values and transfer function coefficients with brief linear equations.These equations can be used to derive the exact expression of transfer functions,which can manipulate the physical parameters.For a given filter structure,according to relations between transfer functions and physical parameters,the physical parameters could be extracted.This is especially meaningful in the post–fabrication process.

Abstract:We present an optical finite impulse response (FIR) filter design method. Based on crystal birefringence, an optical FIR filter can be designed to produce arbitrary spectrum output. A mathematic model of the optical FIR filter is introduced from the FIR theory. Details of the mapping relationship between an FIR filter and an optical filter are analyzed. A classical FIR filter design method is directly applied. After using the optical backward transfer method to implement the optical configuration, a design of a green/magenta broadband filter is discussed. The experiment results demonstrate that the theoretical simulation is in accordance with the experiment.
Ultracompact, Reflection-Free and High-Efficiency Channel Drop Filters Based on Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We propose an ultracompact channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The conditions for implementing such an ideal CDF are derived from the temporal coupled-mode equations governing the operation of the CDF. By considering the intercoupling of the two involved nanobeam cavities, some ambiguities of the previous equivalent circuit model analysis are cleared up. Practical configurations on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) for the proposed CDF are suggested with a typical length less than 15 μm. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method calculations show that the proposed filter can achieve drop efficiency higher than 99% without any reflection. Compared to the λ/4-shifted Bragg grating resonators based CDF, the proposed CDF is more compact, high-efficient and reflection-free. It is also easy to implement a low-power tunable filter due to the ultrahigh quality factor Q and ultrasmall modal volume V of the involved photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.

Abstract:Photonic crystal polarization filter is a new filter using the band gap property of photonic crystal to control the polarization state of the signal light. It has important applications in many areas, such as the optical fiber communication, optical sensing measurement, and optical information processing. The paper studies a one-dimensional photonic crystal polarization filter with multiple channels by the optical transfer matrix method. The study shows that defect layer thickness of photonic crystal (D) determines the number of filter channels (N), both similar to satisfy the linear relationship. The refractive index of defect layer has some influence on the number of channel variation, that is, the larger refractive index, the more channels. The location of central wavelength for filter channel can be adjusted by changing the number of unit layers and unit thickness of photonic crystals, which does not affect the number of filter channels.

Abstract:Optical filters are essential parts of advanced optical communication and sensing systems. Among them, the ones with an ultrawide free spectral range (FSR) are especially critical. They are promising to provide access to numerous wavelength channels highly desired for large-capacity optical transmission and multipoint multiparameter sensing. Present schemes for wide-FSR filters either suffer from limited cavity length or poor fabrication tolerance or impose an additional active-tuning control requirement. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a filter that features FSR-free operation capability, subnanometer optical bandwidth, and acceptable fabrication tolerance. Only one single deep dip within a record-large waveband ( S + C + L band) is observed by appropriately designing a side-coupled Bragg-grating-assisted Fabry–Perot filter, which has been applied as the basic sensing unit for both the refractive index and temperature measurement. Five such basic units are also cascaded in series to demonstrate a multichannel filter. This work provides a new insight to design FSR-free filters and opens up a possibility of flexible large-capacity integration using more wavelength channels, which will greatly advance integrated photonics in optical communication and sensing.
