Abstract:We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposition method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems.

Abstract:A novel design of reflective color filters based on a two-dimensional subwavelength grating structure is proposed, which exhibits an incident angle independent property with unpolarized incident light in the visible range. By using rigorous coupled-wave analysis method, the effects of the grating period, the groove depth and the size of the structure on the reflectance spectrum are investigated in detail. The structural parameters of the gratings are optimized, and a color filter with high angular tolerance is achieved. Simulation result shows that the maximal reflectance is 56% at 424 nm with a bandwidth of 45 nm, and that the grating can almost keep its reflectance, bandwidth and the peak position at the incident angle up to about 60 under unpolarized incident light. The peak position of the color filter can be tuned from 400 nm to 520 nm by changing structural parameters of the gratings, and keep its incident angle-independent property.

Abstract:Angle insensitive color filter based on Metal-SiO x -Metal structure is proposed in this paper, which can keep the same perceived transmitted color when the incidence angle changes from 0° to 60°, especially for p-polarization light. Various silicon oxide films deposited by reaction magnetron sputtering with a tunable refractive index from 1.97 to 3.84 is introduced to meet the strict angle insensitive resonance conditions. The angle resolved spectral filtering for both p-polarization light and s-polarization light are quite well, which can be attributed to the different physical origins for the high angular tolerance for two polarizations. Finally, the effect of SiO x absorption and Ag thickness on the peak transmittance are analyzed.

Abstract:Here we report a compact multilayer film structure for angle robust color filtering, which is verified by theoretical calculations and experiment results. The introduction of the amorphous silicon in the proposed unsymmetrical resonant cavity greatly reduces the angular sensitivity of the filters, which is confirmed by the analysis of the phase shift within the structure. The temperature of the substrate during the deposition is expressly investigated to obtain the best optical performance with high peak reflectance and good angle insensitive color filtering by compromising the refractive index of dielectric layer and the surface roughness of the multilayer film. And the outlayer of the structure, worked as the anti-reflection layer, have an enormous impact on the filtering performance. This method, described in this paper, can have enormous potential for diverse applications in display, colorful decoration, anti-counterfeiting and so forth.
Highly Efficient Omnidirectional Structural Color Tuning Method Based on Dielectric-Metal-dielectric Structure.

Abstract:A novel and convenient scheme is proposed to achieve angle insensitive color filtering across a large color gamut by simply altering the thickness of the dielectric layer of a dielectric-metal-dielectric grating structure. The plasmonic filter presents a great feature of angle resolved spectrum response up to 60° and is independent of the azimuthal angle and the polarization state as well so as to construct an omnidirectional filter for practical applications. The color tuning feature of the proposed filter with varied dielectric thickness is attributed to the modulation of the condition for the localized surface plasmon resonance, which bears responsibility for the omnidirectional property of this plasmonic filter. This color-tuning method with a single mold size required can have wide applications in fields of display, colorful decoration, printing, and so forth.

Abstract:We propose omnidirectional reflective color filters based on metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength grating structure. By particle swarm optimization, the structural parameters of three color filters (yellow, magenta, cyan) are obtained. The optimized filters can present the same perceived specular color at unpolarized illumination for a broad range of incident angles. The reflectance curves at different incident angles keep almost invariable and the color difference is less than 6 in CIEDE2000 formula up to 45 degrees. Angle-insensitive properties including the incident angular tolerance, azimuthal angular tolerance and the polarization effect are investigated thoroughly to construct a real omnidirectional color filter. Through the analysis of the magnetic field, the physical origin is verified that the total absorption band at specific wavelength results from the localized surface plasmon resonance responsible for the angle insensitive spectral filtering. Abstract:To restrain the high spatial frequency which is higher than the photoelectric image sensors sampling frequency,a two-dimensional crystal optical low pass filter(OLPF)is designed,fabricated and tested.Our device consists of two birefringence plates and a half wave plate.On the front and back surfaces of the OLPF.an antireflection film and an infrared cutting film are plated.The test results show that the antact angle is less than 20°,the transmission in the visible light range and infrared light range is above 90% and less 2% respectively,the high spatial frequency is restrained very well.These reveal that our crystal OLPF can match with the photoelectric image sensor and has a good restraining high spatial performance.

Abstract:A new type of filter based on one-dimensional photonic crystals is presented. A photonic crystal consists of a periodic repetition of air layers and epsilon-negative (ENG) material layers. This type of filter has high-Q values without defects. The Q values and the filtering frequency can be precisely adjusted by modulating the thicknesses of the ENG material layers and the air layers, respectively. A method of deciding the position of the transmission band for the photonic crystals is presented. The effect of absorption of ENG materials on the filter is also considered.

Abstract:In this work, high-color-purity transmissive colors with high angular tolerance are proposed. The metal/dielectric film stacks, by means of induced transmission effect, are able to achieve similar to 60% peak transmission and similar to 60 nm transmission band, so as to cover a large color gamut. The filter presents good incident angle insensitivity up to 60 degrees, ascribed to the combined contribution of the constant total phase shift within the intermediate dielectric layer and the relatively high refractive index of the dielectric layers. And the matching of the optical admittances for metal/dielectric layers is responsible to the high transmission of the metal-based film stack. Moreover, the optical constants of silver film, affected by deposition technology have a great impact on the optical property of the color device including the bandwidth and peak transmission. And the thickness of the top dielectric layer as well as the metal/dielectric stack number can also alter the performance of the color filter.

Abstract:Optical angular filters, which can be used to filter light transmission at a specific angle, are extremely attractive for various optical applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a one-dimensional (1D) defective photonic crystal (DPC) to realize polarization-insensitive narrow angular filtration at normal incidence. The proposed angular filter consists of a mirror-symmetric heterostructure incorporating two groups of alternatively stacked Si and SiO2 layers separated by a SiO2 defect layer. Using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique, the fabricated DPC can achieve a narrow angular transparency window of ±6° at the near-infrared wavelength. Based on the angular filtration effect, DPC angular filter is further demonstrated to suppress the diffraction phenomenon in the far-field projection imaging. We envision that the proposed angular filter based on DPC has potential applications in lens-less imaging, privacy protection, and beam shaping.
Inverse Design of Ultranarrow and High-Efficiency Color Filters Based on Tandem Convolutional Neural Networks

Abstract:In this paper, an ultranarrow, high-efficiency color filter based on a two-dimensional grating nanostructure array is realized by a tandem inverse design network. The tandem inverse designed network is generated by connecting an inverse network with a pre-trained forward network. The tandem convolutional neural network successfully overcame the non-uniqueness problem of the training data. The performance of the networks is verified by a test set of 2592 data points, and the average MSE of the prediction results of the tandem network is 1.01 x 10-3. Extremely low error indicates that the tandem network can learn and capture the distribution characteristics of the transmission spectrum and give a reasonable design of the structural parameters. Finally, we obtained multiple inverse-designed transmissive color filters with ultranarrow linewidths and high efficiency, with central wavelengths between 480 nm and 630 nm. The linewidth and efficiency of each kind of color filter are less than 10.6 nm and higher than 60%. Narrow linewidths and wide wavelength tunability result in high color accuracy and a broad color gamut of the filters. The filters with two-dimensional metallic nanostructure array also show polarization-independent characteristics. Compared with the traditional method, this method can quickly and accurately design the structural parameters corresponding to the spectral response, which provides a new method for the nanostructure design.
Ultracompact, Reflection-Free and High-Efficiency Channel Drop Filters Based on Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We propose an ultracompact channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The conditions for implementing such an ideal CDF are derived from the temporal coupled-mode equations governing the operation of the CDF. By considering the intercoupling of the two involved nanobeam cavities, some ambiguities of the previous equivalent circuit model analysis are cleared up. Practical configurations on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) for the proposed CDF are suggested with a typical length less than 15 μm. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method calculations show that the proposed filter can achieve drop efficiency higher than 99% without any reflection. Compared to the λ/4-shifted Bragg grating resonators based CDF, the proposed CDF is more compact, high-efficient and reflection-free. It is also easy to implement a low-power tunable filter due to the ultrahigh quality factor Q and ultrasmall modal volume V of the involved photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.

Abstract:The traditional minus filter is composed of many layers of thin films, which makes it difficult and complicated to manufacture. It is sensitive to incident light angle and polarization. Here, we propose a near-infrared narrow-band minus filter with a full width at half maximum around 5 nm made of all-dielectric Si-SiO2 structures without any ohmic loss. The stop band transmittance of the proposed filter is close to 0, while its broad pass band transmittance is as high as 90% in the work wavelength range. Theoretical analysis shows that the transmission dip originated from magnetic dipole resonance: Its position can be tuned from 1.3 µm to 1.8 µm by changing the thickness of Si structure, and the proposed structure is insensitive to changes in incident light angle and polarization angle. We further studied its potential applications as a refractive index sensor. The sensitivity of dip1 and dip2 are as high as 953.53 nm/RIU and 691.09 nm/RIU, while their figure of merit is almost unchanged: 59.59 and 115.18, respectively.

Abstract:We report on an all-dielectric, polarization-independent angular filter with one-dimension (1D) photonic crystal (PC) composed of semiconductor compatible Si/SiO2 pairs. The near-symmetric directional band gap of p- and s-polarized components and Fabry-Pérot (F-P) resonances are utilized to realize efficient polarization-independent angular filtering for normal incidence. The proposed angular filter is designed and experimentally demonstrated in a large area (5 cm × 5 cm) with multilayer sputtering depositions. Experimental measurements show that a divergence angle of the polarization-independently transmitted beam through the angular filtering sample at 1550 nm is 2.2° only and the transmission is as high as 0.8 at normal incidence. The proposed and demonstrated angular filter suggests an effective way to design and implement semiconductor compatible, all-dielectric and polarization-independent angular filters in a fashion of simple structure and easy-fabrication, which is expected to have great applications in lighting, beam manipulation, optical coupling and optical communications.

Abstract:Mid-infrared of the 3 - 5 μm spectral region has attracted considerable attention in various fields. We report a highly efficient and angle-tolerant mid-infrared filter based on a cascaded etalon resonator. Two hybrid etalon resonators are serially stacked to make a single peak resonance with a well-suppressed sideband. Each etalon resonator, which exploits a pair of cavities, includes not only a cavity featuring a resonance but also a functional cavity lowering the sideband of transmission spectrum. By taking advantage of double cavities, each etalon features a resonant characteristic with suppressed sideband. Consequently, the filter shows a peak transmission of 92% at resonance and well-suppressed sideband within the 3 - 5 μm spectral region. Transparent dielectric materials make the device highly efficient for both transmission and reflection. Furthermore, the filter utilizing a high-index cavity leads to an enhanced angular tolerance regardless of incident light polarization. The transmission of the filter exhibits center wavelength shifts of around 0.1 μm at an angle of 50° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes, compared to normal incidence.

Abstract:The miniaturization and integration of photonic devices are new requirements in the fast-growing optics field. In this paper, we focus on a feature-rich sub-wavelength nanograting-coated single-layer metal film. The numerical results show that the reflection behaviors of this proposed structure can realize bidirectional dual-channel ultra-narrowband polarized filtering and bidirectional wavelength-modulated sensing in a wide refractive index (RI) range from 1.0 to 1.4 for incident angle of 10° with transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized illumination at wavelengths between 550 nm to 1500 nm. Moreover, the bidirectional properties of filtering and sensing are not obviously decreased when increasing incident angle from 10° to 30°, and decreasing incident angle from 10° to 0°. The calculated RI sensitivity can be up to 592 nm/RIU with a high figure of merit (FOM) of 179.4 RIU−1. More to the point, this nanograting has a simple structure and is less sensitive to the height and shape of grating ridge, which provides great convenience for the fabrication of devices. The other thing that is going on is that this structure can also realize synchronously tunable color filtering, including green to red, with high color purity in the visible band by choosing the period. The underlying physical mechanism is analyzed in detail, and is primarily attributed to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance and dipole resonance at double plasmon resonance wavelengths. This work has tremendous potential in developing multipurpose and high-performance integrated optical devices such as spectral filters, colored displays and plasmon biomedical sensors.

Abstract:A new kind of one-dimension photonic crystal (PC) which can be used as an angular filter was studied. With the knowledge of resonance tunneling mechanism in zero average index PC, we find such PC must contain negative refractive metamaterials and its structure parameters should satisfy some special conditions. When electromagnetic wave of a given frequency incident on such PC, only those portions with incident angles identical with the special angle (or angles) can pass through such PC, while the others can not. Such filter would have wide applications in microwave and optical communications.

Abstract:The angle-sensitive photonic bandgap (PBG) is one of the typical features of one-dimensional photonic crystals. Based on the phase-variation compensation effect between the dielectric and hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), angle-insensitive PBGs can be realized in photonic hypercrystals. However, since hypercrystals are usually constructed using metal components, these angle-insensitive PBGs are mostly limited to narrow bandwidths in visible range. Here, we replace metal with indium tin oxide (ITO) to construct HMMs in the near-infrared range. In these ITO-based HMMs, we experimentally demonstrate the negative refraction of light in transverse magnetic polarization. With this HMM component, we realize a photonic hypercrystal with an angle-insensitive PBG in the wavelength range of 1.15-2.02 mu m. These ITO-based hypercrystals with large angle-insensitive PBGs can find applications in near-infrared reflectors or filters. (C) 2022 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, we present an electrically controlled tunable narrowband filter based on a thin-film lithium niobate two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. The filter incorporates a photonic crystal microcavity structure within the straight waveguide, enabling electronic tuning of the transmitted wavelength through added electrode structures. The optimized microcavity filter design achieves a balance between high transmission rate and quality factor, with a transmission center wavelength of 1 551.6 nm, peak transmission rate of 96.1%, and quality factor of 5 054. Moreover, the filter can shift the central wavelength of the transmission spectrum by applying voltage to the electrodes, with a tuning sensitivity of 13.8 pm/V. The proposed tunable filter adopts a simple-to-fabricate air-hole structure and boasts a compact size (length: 11.57 μm, width: 5.27 μm, area: 60.97 μm 2 ), making it highly suitable for large-scale integration. These features make the filter promising for broad applications in the fields of photonic integration and optical communication.
