Abstract:In this paper the basic idea of field synergy principle is first presented briefly. Then this idea is extended to more general transport processes with energy conversion and is applied to improve the performance of a double inlet pulse tube refrigerator by numerical simulation. The major parameters of a double inlet pulse tube refrigerator studied are as follows. The swept volume of the compressor is 13.5cm(3) and the dead volume of the compressor is 2.334cm(3). The regenerator has an inner diameter of 14mm and is 65mm long. The pulse tube inner diameter is 7.5mm and its length is 65mm. The cold end temperature is 80K and the hot end temperature is 300K. The volume of the reservoir is 4.2 x 10(4) m(3). The working fluid is a mixture of helium and hydrogen. The average pressure is 1.2MPa, and the frequency is 17Hz. Numerical simulations is conducted to search for the optimum molar percentage of helium according to the principle of field synergy principle. Numerical results show that at the 25 % molar percentage of helium the phase angle shift at both clod and hot end is the minimum, and the cooling capacity is the maximum under the other same conditions. The predicted results demonstrate once again the feasibility of the field synergy principle in improving transport processes.
