Abstract:A kind of multi-MRPC cosmic ray testing system was designed to do mass test. Using this system, we can test eight MRPCs orderly by the selection through the parallel port of computer. By this method, we not only heighten test efficiency, but also save cost.

Abstract:Considering the requirement of the multi-parameter-combined environment testing device, a kind of multi-parameter measure and control system based on wireless communication technology was studied in this paper. First, the overall structure of the multi-parameter measure and control system based on wireless communication in combined environment device was put forward, which was made up of six control subsystems: a host computer, the centrifuge and dynamic balance system, the vibration and rectification system, the temperature system, the air pressure system and the sound pressure system. Then, the communication protocol and hardware structure of the multi-computer communication system based on wireless transmission were mainly studied. And software design technology of multi-parameter measure and control system was studied in succession. Finally, the five-parameter-combined environment testing was carried out. The experimental results show that the measure and control tasks of the combined environment testing can be well finished by the multi-parameter measure and control system.

Abstract:Two MRPC modules are tested simultaneously using the cosmic ray test system.Two different events selection methods are used to analysis the performances of two modules.The results show when the high energy cosmic particles pass through MRPC modules nearly vertically,time resolution,avalanche signals ratio and other performances of MRPCs are improved.In the mean time,we study the relation between crosstalk and performances of MRPCs.

Abstract:In order to test the performance of detector prototypes in a laboratory environment, we design and build a large area(90 cm×52 cm) test platform for cosmic rays based on a well-designed Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber(MRPC) with excellent time resolution and a high detection efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The time resolution of the MRPC module used is tested to be～80 ps, and the position resolution along the strip is～5mm, while the position resolution perpendicular to the strip is～12.7 mm. The platform constructed by four MRPC modules can be used for tracking cosmic rays with a spatial resolution of～6.3 mm, and provide a reference time～40 ps.

Abstract:A system for distance monitoring and a seismic experiment controlling was introduced.This system was used to develop the method of a remote pseudo-dynamic test.A network communication platform NetSLab was needed to realize the remote control of the pseudo-dynamic test.Authors used Visual Basic developing the standard open-end single layer structural remote pseudo-dynamic test platform.The pseudo-dynamic test was remotely executed using this program.The application of the program was verified well by test results.

Abstract:From the test results of 33 Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) modules, we studied the correlation between the average signal amplitude and the time resolution. The average amplitude depends on the gas multiplication operation mode which determines the time resolution. The fluctuation of time resolution measurements with the number of events collected by the chambers is also discussed. This analysis will help to set the control limits to select the chambers with required time resolution in mass production.

Abstract:A cosmic-ray testing station (CORTS) in laboratory has been installed, and the performance of a prototype of CMS RE1/2 RPC was tested. The RPC's efficiency is about 85%, the time resolution is 0.87 +/- 0.08ns, and the spatial resolution is 1.5 times the width of read-out strip, which are consistent with the results obtained using the muon beam at CERN. The comparison makes clear that cosmic-ray test can provide reliably the basic parameters which describe the RPC performance.

Abstract:With an excellent time resolution, the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) has been applied as TOF detector in particle physics experiments. We constructed more than 30 MRPC modules that were set up on the tray of RICH-STAR successfully. By the program of Magboltz, the parameters of working gases in MRPC were calculated. Based on the detector physics the relation between MRPC performance and working gas was analyzed, which is helpful to optimize the proportion of gas mixtures for RPC and MRPC.

Abstract:With the constant increase of accelerator luminosity, performance requirements of the MRPC detectors increase harshly. An online aging test system is set up in our Lab. The setup of the system is described and the purpose of the test is to study the performance stability during the long time running under high luminosity environment. The high rate MRPC has been irradiated by X-ray for 36 days and accumulated charge density reached 0.1C/cm2. No obvious performance degradation is observed for the MRPC

Abstract:Multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC), which is mostly developed in high energy physics domain with excellent time resolution, is also highlighted in imaging applications. A set of 50cm×50cm large area MRPC with high position resolution was successfully developed by our group and different experiments have been done to test its performances. Cosmic ray muons were used to do the test and proper high voltage and working gas were chosen. Data analysis indicates its good detection efficiency and good position resolution, which encourages further study of its application in RPC-PET and muon tomography.

Abstract:The large area position sensitive detector arrays are the importance component of cosmic ray muon scattering tomography.In this work, a 73.6 cm ×73.6 cm large area MRPC detectors and the applicable double-fine encoding readout electronics have been developed and implemented.The prototype cosmic ray mu-on tomography facility with 2 sets of detectors, 3 large area MRPC detectors each, has been established.With the trigger signals generated by the upper and lower plastic scintillators, the trajectories of muons can be recon-structed by acquiring and processing of the experimental data.Therefore, the experimental images of cosmic ray muon tomography based on MRPC detectors can be obtained by PoCA reconstruction algorithm.The experiment result is well consistent with the Monte Carlo simulation data.This successful prototype provides a platform for further studies of the physical characteristics and the image reconstruction algorithms of cosmic ray muon tomo-graphy.
A New Design of MRPC to Reduce Noise and Crosstalk

Abstract:The CBM time of flight wall is proposed to be built with MRPC technology. In the past few years we have successfuly improved the rate capability of MRPCs to CBM level. However, in a relative high particle multiplicity situation (over 20 kHz/cm(2)), multi-hit capability is one of the most demanding requirement of the detector. In a free running mode too many noise not only affect the performance of MRPC but also enlarge the data file or even damage the FIFO. So it is needed to develop low crosstalk and low noise MRPC to meet CBM-TOF requirement. Three strip-readout MRPC with or without shielding grounds were designed to study how to reduce noise and crosstalk of MRPCs. In this paper we report on the performance of three different structures of MRPCs named G-0, G-2 and G-3. Tests with cosmic rays were performed at Tsinghua University. The results show that MRPC G-2 can perform better than other two structures, the average cluster size of G-2 is lower than 1.28 strips and the noise level is below 0.5 Hz/cm(2). The detection efficiency is over 98% and the time resolution is around 65 ps.
Development and test of a real-size MRPC for CBM-TOF

Abstract:In the CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment constructed at the Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (Fair) at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany, MRPC(Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber) is adopted to construct the large TOF (Time-of-Flight) system to achieve an unprecedented precision of hadron identification, benefiting from its good time resolution, relatively high efficiency and low building price. We have developed a kind of double-ended readout strip MRPC. It uses low resistive glass to keep good performance of time resolution under high-rate condition. The differential double stack structure of 2x4 gas gaps help to reduce the required high voltage to half. There are 24 strips on one counter, and each is 270mm long, 7mm wide and the interval is 3mm. Ground is placed onto the MRPC electrode and feed through is carefully designed to match the 100 Ohm impedance of PADI electronics. The prototype of this strip MRPC has been tested with cosmic ray, a 98% efficiency and 60ps time resolution is gotten. In order to further examine the performance of the detector working under higher particle flux rate, the prototype has been tested in the 2014 October GSI beam time and 2015 February CERN beam time. In both beam times a relatively high rate of 1 kHz/cm2 was obtained. The calibration is done with CBM ROOT. A couple of corrections has been considered in the calibration and analysis process (including time-walk correction, gain correction, strip alignment correction and velocity correction) to access actual counter performances such as efficiency and time resolution. An efficiency of 97% and time resolution of 48ps are obtained. All these results show that the real-size prototype is fully capable of the requirement of the CBM-TOF, and new designs such as self-sealing are modified into the strip counter prototype to obtain even better performance.

Abstract:We have developed a large area two -dimensional high position resolution MRPC for muon tomo-graphy .The sensitive area of the module is 1 072 mm ×1 072 mm, through a cosmic-ray experiment , the per-formance of MRPC module is carefully observed and each channel is calibrated .Through an X ray experiment with a narrow slit , the position resolution is studied .The results show that the efficiency is higher than 98%and the spatial resolution can reach 272 μm.

Abstract:As a new type of gaseous detector, Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) has been widely used in high-energy physics experiments to identify the secondary particles produced in the collisions. In this paper we introduce a new version of MRPC with copper high voltage electrodes to solve the issues of complexity, pollution, noise uniformity and impedance matching, which are due to the graphite HV structure of the present counters. The analysis combined with simulation proved that the major part of charge can be induced through capacitive coupling between the corresponding high voltage and readout strips. Cosmic test on the coupled readout MRPC shows a 96% efficiency and 71 ps time resolution. The cosmic test system is also applied for the task to find eco working gas mixtures, since Freon and Sulfur Hexafluoride, as the most commonly used components for MRPCs, have high values of Global Warming Potential. The task becomes important and urgent in the context when EU has set targets for reducing selling and emission of fluorinated greenhouse gases. We report the results which verify the good detector operation in several Hydrofluoroolefins based ecological gas mixtures. The system can be used to test more eco gas mixtures in the future.

Abstract:Cosmic ray muon tomography is a novel technology to detect high-Z material. A prototype of TUMUTY with 73.6 cm x 73.6 cm large scale position sensitive MRPC detectors has been developed and is introduced in this paper. Three test kits have been tested and image is reconstructed using MAP algorithm. The reconstruction results show that the prototype is working well and the objects with complex structure and small size (20 mm) can be imaged on it, while the high-Z material is distinguishable from the low-Z one. This prototype provides a good platform for our further studies of the physical characteristics and the performances of cosmic ray muon tomography.

Abstract:Muon tomography system built by 2-D readout high spatial resolution Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) detector is a project in Tsinghua University. In 2013, we had developed a prototype of muon tomography system named TUMUTY, now we try to develop larger sensitive area and smarter structure MRPC detector to upgrade the system to a car detection system, which is used to detect high Z metal hidden in cars or other objects. For the system, 2 layers x3 detectors are needed to get the incident particle's track, and the setting is the same for the outgoing track. Therefore, there will four layers containing twelve detectors in total, and its detection area will reach 1 x 3 m(2). An encoding readout method is suggested to minimize the number of the readout electronics, which reduces the complexity and the cost of the system. In this paper, we measured the performance of 12 MRPCs used for the system.

Abstract:The CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment constructed at FAIR (Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research) at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany, will provide unique research opportunities to explore the phase diagram of nuclear matter. As one of the core detectors in the CBM experiment, the Time-of-Flight (TOF) system applies the MRPC (Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber) for a precise particle identification for all the incident charged hadrons. The CBM-TOF will be operated at an ion beam intensity up to 10(9)/s, which means the particle fluxes on the TOF wall can reach an unprecedentedly high rate of 30 kHz/cm(2). Almost half of the MRPC counters are from the inner region of the TOF wall, and they will be assembled with the low-resistive glass which enables them to work under such high rate. This is the first time of the large scale application of the low-resistive glass MRPCs into the nuclear and high-energy physics experiments. It is especially important to study on the production and test procedure to keep the good performance of all these counters. For this mass production, we have developed a set of specified manufacturing procedure and quality control method to guarantee the performance of all the counters. A newly developed method to check the uniformity of the gas gap with help of the projection imaging technique has been first applied. Until now, 73 MRPCs have been produced for the eTOF project in the BESII detector upgrade at STAR and the TOF system of mini-CBM. Tested by cosmic ray in a system based on TRB, all the produced counters show a stable performance of above 95% efficiency and below 90 ps time resolution. The study on the mass production of the low-resistive plate chamber will provide experience for wide application of MRPC into the high rate experiments in the future. In this paper, the counter design, manufacturing procedures, quality control methods and test results for this MRPC counter are described in a detailed way.

Abstract:We study the performance of a large-area 2-D Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) designed for muon tomography with high spatial resolution. An efficiency up to 98% and a spatial resolution of around 270 μ m are obtained in cosmic ray and X-ray tests. The performance of the MRPC is also investigated for two working gases: standard gas and pure Freon. The result shows that the MRPC working in pure Freon can provide higher efficiency and better spatial resolution.

Abstract:Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) is a new generation of gas detector with good timing and spacial resolution, whose technique is widely applied in some recent high energy (nuclear) physics experiments. In this letter, we report a long-strip two-end readout MRPC and its test beam performance. The measurements show that the long-strip performs a transmission line characteristic and the impedance is independent of the length of strip. The MRPC module we developed is presented to gain a timing resolution of similar to 80 ps and a spacial resolution of similar to 6.4 mm. The possible application of the MRPC is also discussed.
