Abstract:A tunneling-type magnetoresistance (MR) as large as 158% is observed at T = 300 K in a polycrystalline Zn0.41Fe2.59O4 sample, in which the Zn0.41Fe2.59O4 grains are separated by insulating alpha-Fe2O3 boundaries. The huge room-temperature MR is attributed to the high spin polarization of Zn(0.41)Fe(2.59)O4 grains and antiferromagnetic correlations between magnetic domains on both sides of the insulating alpha-Fe2O3 boundary. The MR exhibits strong temperature dependence below 100 K and its magnitude is enhanced to reach 1280% at 4.2 K, which may arise from the Coulomb blockade effect.

Abstract:Zn-doped magnetite Fe3O4 samples were prepared at different doped concentrations and annealed at high temperature in ambient air and N2 respectively.X-ray diffraction(XRD)results showed that samples annealed in air were oxidized and the consequent products were partially in α-Fe2O3 form.While for the samples annealed in N2,ZnxFe3-xO4 products of high purity were obtained.The doping of Zn2+ on the tetrahedral sites(A sites)changed the valence distribution of Fe2+ ions on the octahedral sites(B sites).The electron transporting mechanism remained to be variable range hopping(VRH)conduction.Measurement results of magnetic properties indicated that the super exchange coupling interaction between Fe2+ ions was affected by the low doping concentration of Zn2+ ions in the crystal,and the negative magnetoresistivity of ZnxFe3-xO4 was improved as well.

Abstract:Fe(3)O(4) polycrystalline film was fabricated using magnetron sputtering technique from Fe(2)O(3) target. A room temperature magnetoresistance of about -1.2% has been observed. The temperature dependence of resistance was measured, and no Verway transition was observed. The resistance is proportional to exp(T(1/2)) down to liquid nitride temperature (78 K), indicating that the observed magnetoresistance originates from the inter-granular spin-dependent tunneling through grain boundaries.

Abstract:The magnetic and transport properties of nanocrystalline ZnxFe3−xO4 with x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, respectively, fabricated by the sol–gel method have been investigated. Large magnetoresistance (MR) was observed and found to be originated both from the tunneling of the spin-polarized electrons across the adjacent ferromagnetic grains and the scattering by the canted spins at the grain surface near the grain boundaries. It has been revealed that the MR for the ZnxFe3−xO4 samples (x=0, 0.5 and 1.0) increases with the temperature decreasing from room temperature until a maximum is reached at around 55K. Then a sharp drop occurs with the further decrease in temperature, regarded as a spin (cluster) glass transition. For the samples studied, a biggest low field (0.5T) MR value of about 20% for x=0 at 55K has been obtained. The mechanism of the MR behavior of the materials was discussed.

Abstract:We report the magnetotransport properties of self-assembled Co@CoO nanoparticle arrays at temperatures below 100 K. Resistance shows thermally activated behavior that can be fitted by the general expression of R exp{(T/T0)^v}. Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping (v=1/2) and simple activation (hard gap, v=1) dominate the high and low temperature region, respectively, with a strongly temperature-dependent transition regime in between. A giant positive magnetoresistance of >1,400% is observed at 10K, which decreases with increasing temperature. The positive MR and most of its features can be explained by the Zeeman splitting of the localized states that suppresses the spin dependent hopping paths in the presence of on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Abstract:We fabricate Fe/Fe oxide granular film by DC sputtering and study the magnetic and transport properties in the insulator region. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirm the coexistence of iron and Fe2O3. Accompanied with the nonlinear I–V curve and magnetic measurement, we investigate mechanism of sizable magnetoresistance in detail and found the spin in the interface has crucial contribution to the spin tunneling process.

Abstract:Magnetic tunnel junctions with an Fe3O4 top electrode have been fabricated. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) shows that in as-deposited, state, Fe And FeO phases exist at the interface. These two phases a re believed to have formed as a result of the unstable plasma condition at the start of the Fe3O4 deposition. A relatively low magnetoresistance ratio (MR) (3.5%) and low switching field (H-C2) (40 Oe) is observed which is associated with the fact that the FeO phase magnetically isolates the Fe phase from the Fe3O4 phase at the interface. After annealing at 150 degreesC for 5 h, the MR as well as the switching field (H-C2) increases by a factor of two. HRTEM shows that the FeO phase at the interface has transformed into Fe and Fe3O4 in the annealed sample, resulting in the increased MR (7.0%) and higher switching field (H-C2) (300 Oe). However, annealing does not completely remove Fe at the interface, thereby limiting the MR.

Abstract:A series of nanocrystalline powders Zn0.6CoxFe2.4-xO4 ( x = 0 - 0.30) were synthesized by the sol-gel technique. The structure and magnetic properties was investigated and analyzed through the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The experimental results show that α-Fe2O3 transitional phase appears in the temperature range from 550°C to 800°C. Single-phase zinc-cobalt ferrites with a spinel structure are obtained when the temperature is beyond 800°C. With relatively higher values of the cobalt content x = 0.075 - 0.15, the specific saturation magnetization climbs up at first and then falls down with the increase of the cobalt content. The coercive force strength Hc of Zn0.6CoxFe2.4-xO4 reaches its highest value 47520 A/ m when x=0.075 at 1300°C. Hc increases slowly with temperature near 1200°C when x≥0.15 and remains in a flat state at 1200°C - 1300°C and moderate increase is obtained by increasing the x value. High specific saturation magnetization and coercive force can be obtained simultaneously when the cobalt content is near 0.10.

Abstract:Ultrathin (15 nm) Fe3O4 nanocrystalline films with (111) spinel texture have been prepared by rapid annealing of amorphous ion oxide films. Large low field magnetoresistance (LFMR), with the values of about -6.3% at 300 K and -10% at 200 K under a field of 0.5 T, has been observed in the films. The LFMR is mainly attributed to the boundary tunneling of high spin-polarized electrons in Fe3O4 grains of the films and nearly follows a simple relationship between MR and polarization for intergranular tunneling. The fabricating method here seems to be a good approach to prepare high quality Fe3O4 nanocrystalline films with a large LFMR at room temperature. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Large low-field magnetoresistance in (ZnxFe3−xO4)0.56+δ/(Fe2O3)0.44−δ (x=0.4,0.5,0.6,0.7,0.8,0.9,−0.02<δ<0.02) granular systems has been observed in a wide temperature range while the single-phase samples of ZnxFe3−xO4 show smaller magnetoresistance (<2%). GMR effect (34%) is shown for x=0.5 in magnetic field 5kOe at room temperature. The GMR effect of the samples is attributed to the disorder-driven amplification of spin-dependent transport at the structural boundaries of the mixture.

Abstract:We report a room temperature tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in Co/Al2O3/NiFe junctions containing magnetic electrodes oxidized prior to forming the Al2O3 layer. A significant change in a tunnel magnetoresistance is observed when the layer magnetizations are rotated collinearly in the junction plane by an applied external field. The angular dependence of the tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance could be explained by the presence of an antiferromagnetic oxide layer formed within the barrier.

Abstract:SrFe12-xCrxO19(x = 0-1.0) hexaferrite nanoparticles have been fabricated using a sol-gel technique for perpendicular magnetic recording. Experimental results have shown that the values of specific saturation magnetization, σs, increase for x ≤ 0.4 as the Cr doping content increases, and reach maximum at x = 0.2, while the coercivity, Hc, decreases for x < 0.5. This feature is favorable to magnetic recording. It is also found that the α-Fe2O3 non-magnetic phase appears after x = 0.6 and remains to be a hexagonal magnetoplumbite phase for x = 0-0.4. Magnetic measurements have revealed that Cr substitution can decrease the magnetization and increase the peak-widening for Hopkinson peak when doped with Cr3+.

Abstract:Ultrafine Fe3O4 particles were prepared through chemical co-precipitation. Powder compact was sintered and quenched in a controlled CO2/CO atmosphere to obtain bulk specimen. X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy showed homogeneous polycrystalline Fe3O4 phase. The electrical resistance was measured in applied magnetic fields up to 5T over the temperature range of 55–155K. The temperature dependence of resistivity showed a semiconductor behavior without discontinuity at Verwey point, while the magnetoresistance (MR) exhibited an extremum in its temperature dependence and correspondingly the magnetization manifested a discontinuous decrease, with temperature decreasing through Verwey point. Meanwhile X-ray diffraction showed no observable structural transition in the range from 77 to 300K. The results different from those of well-annealed samples are suggested to be attributed to quench related stress and defects. It is proposed that near Verwey point the MR behavior in Fe3O4 is not completely determined by the `structural–electronic’ mechanism. Below Verwey temperature Tv, MR value increased sharply when temperature decreased. The transport behavior is modeled as an activated mechanism above Tv and a variable range hopping mechanism below Tv.

Abstract:Magnetic phase transition tunnel magnetoresistance (MPT-TMR) effect with a single magnetic electrode has been investigated by first-principles calculations. The calculations show that the MPT-TMR of FeRh/MgO/Cu tunnel junction can be as high as hundreds of percent when the magnetic structure of FeRh changes from G-type antiferromagnetic (GAFM) to ferromagnetic order. This new type of MPT-TMR may be superior to the tunnel anisotropic magnetoresistance because of its huge magneto-resistance effect and similar structural simplicity. The main mechanism for the giant MPT-TMR can be attributed to the formation of interface resonant states at GAFM-FeRh/MgO interface. A direct FeRh/MgO interface is found to be necessary for achieving high MPT-TMR experimentally. Moreover, we find the FeRh/MgO interface with FeRh in ferromagnetic phase has nearly full spin-polarization due to the negligible majority transmission and significantly different Fermi surface of two spin channels. Thus, it may act as a highly efficient and tunable spin-injector. In addition, electric field driven MPT of FeRh-based hetero-magnetic nanostructures can be utilized to design various energy efficient tunnel junction structures and the corresponding lower power consumption devices. Our results will stimulate further experimental investigations of MPT-TMR and other fascinating phenomenon of FeRh-based tunnel junctions that may be promising in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Abstract:We have studied the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties in polycrystalline Ni50−xCoxMn32Al18 Heusler alloys. A unique martensitic transformation (MT) from the ferromagnetic austenite to the weak-magnetic martensite phase was obtained and magnetic-field-induced reverse MT was confirmed in these alloys. A magnetic difference up to 45 emu/g was measured across the MT for Ni42Co8Mn32Al18 alloy. In the same quaternary alloy, the large magnetoresistance effect of 67% at 225 K was observed through this field-induced magnetic phase transition.

Abstract:The magnetic transition-metal (TM) @ oxide nanoparticles have been of great interest due to their wide range of applications, from medical sensors in magnetic resonance imaging to photo-catalysis. Although several studies on small clusters of TM@oxide have been reported, the understanding of the physical electronic properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 is far from sufficient. In this work, the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 (TM = Fe, Co and Ni) hetero-nanostructure are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). It has been found that the core-shell nanostructure Fe13@(ZnO)42, Co15@(ZnO)42 and Ni15@(ZnO)42 are the most stable structures. Moreover, it is also predicted that the variation of the magnetic moment and magnetism of Fe, Co and Ni in TMn@ZnO42 hetero-nanostructure mainly stems from effective hybridization between core TM-3d orbitals and shell O-2p orbitals, and a magnetic moment inversion for Fe15@(ZnO)42 is investigated. Finally, optical properties studied by calculations show a red shift phenomenon in the absorption spectrum compared with the case of (ZnO)48.

Abstract:Bulk nanocrystalline materials of small and medium ferromagnetic content were produced using severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion at roomtemperature. Giant magnetoresistive behavior was found for as deformed materials, which was further improved by adjusting the microstructure with thermal treatments. The adequate range of annealing temperatures was assessed with in-situ synchrotron diffraction measurements. Thermally treated CuCo materials show larger giant magnetoresistance after annealing for 1 h at 300C, while for CuFe this annealing temperature is too high and decreases the magnetoresistive properties. The improvement of magnetoresistivity by thermal treatments is discussed with respect to the microstructural evolution as observed by electron microscopy and ex situ synchrotron diffraction measurements.

Nanostructural origin of semiconductivity and large magnetoresistance in epitaxial NiCo2O4/Al2O3 thin films

Abstract:Despite low resistivity (similar to 1 m Omega cm), metallic electrical transport has not been commonly observed in inverse spinel NiCo2O4, except in certain epitaxial thin films. Previous studies have stressed the effect of valence mixing and the degree of spinel inversion on the electrical conduction of NiCo2O4 films. In this work, we studied the effect of nanostructural disorder by comparing the NiCo2O4 epitaxial films grown on MgAl2O4 (1 1 1) and on Al2O3 (0 0 1) substrates. Although the optimal growth conditions are similar for the NiCo2O4 (1 1 1)/MgAl2O4 (1 1 1) and the NiCo2O4 (1 1 1)/Al2O3 (0 0 1) films, they show metallic and semiconducting electrical transport, respectively. Post-growth annealing decreases the resistivity of NiCo2O4 (1 1 1)/Al2O3 (0 0 1) films, but the annealed films are still semiconducting. While the semiconductivity and the large magnetoresistance in NiCo2O4 (1 1 1)/Al2O3 (0 0 1) films cannot be accounted for in terms of non-optimal valence mixing and spinel inversion, the presence of anti-phase boundaries between nano-sized crystallites, generated by the structural mismatch between NiCo2O4 and Al2O3, may explain all the experimental observations in this work. These results reveal nanostructural disorder as being another key factor for controlling the electrical transport of NiCo2O4, with potentially large magnetoresistance for spintronics applications.
