Abstract:Environmental friendly leather finishing agent based on polyurethane has attracted great attention in recent years.In this paper we reported the synthesis of polyurethane latex through pre-polymerization,chain extension,neutralization and emulsification using organic siloxane polymer as the modifier.The surface composition,surface hydrophilicity,and mechanical properties were investigated.The results indicated that the resultant latex could be stored up to one year.Furthermore,due to the introduction of organic siloxane blocks and the in situ crosslinking during the film formation,the coating was hydrophobic and showed excellent crocking fastness.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) often suffers from poor water resistance and mechanical properties due to hydrophilic emulsifiers. To address these issues, this study introduces glycidyl carbamate (GC) as a crosslinker to improve WPU performance. Three types of GC were synthesized using aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic isocyanates, respectively. The crosslinked network was established through a reaction between the epoxide group of GC and the carboxylic acid and amine groups of WPU. Among these, the WPU film utilizing aromatic isocyanate-based GC exhibited the highest crosslink density, modulus, hardness, and water resistance, due to the rigidity of the aromatic molecular structure. However, the film displayed excessive brittleness, resulting in reduced tensile strength, along with yellowing typically associated with aromatic compounds. The WPU crosslinked with cycloaliphatic GC demonstrated the next best mechanical properties and water resistance, with a 2.7-fold increase in tensile strength, a 1.5-fold increase in hardness, and a 66% reduction in the water swelling ratio compared to neat WPU. This study presents a novel and effective strategy to enhance the water resistance and mechanical properties of WPU films, making them suitable for advanced coating applications.

Abstract:The inferior anti-smudge properties and compromised anti-corrosion performance of waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) stem from the presence of abundant hydrophilic groups in their polymer networks. Despite various hydrophobic segments have been introduced in WPU skeleton to lower the impacts of hydrophilic groups, the limited migration capability of hydrophobic segments in waterborne matrix often result in unsatisfactory performance. Herein, we fabricate a multifunctional PDMS-modulated WPU coating employing sorbitan monooleate (SP), a renewable bio-derived polyol, as an internal crosslink agent, and hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM) as a post-crosslink agent to fully eliminate the polar hydrophilic groups in the molecular linkages and further enhance the crosslink density of the coating. It is found that the coating exhibits exceptional anti-graffiti and self-cleaning effects when subjected to tests involving oil-based and water-based pens and inks, as well as common household liquids like milk, coffee, cooking oil, ethanol, n-hexadecane, etc. Such anti-smudge coating could readily remove carbon powder-like dust with water, ensuring a clean surface, and also possess a certain level of resistance to fingerprint smudges. Apart from excellent mechanical robustness and impressed durability after 500 cycles of writing erase tests, the coating also remains intact and has anti-smudge properties when folded or bent. For chemical resistance, the coating can resist at least 18 h of acid, alkali, and salt intrusion without being damaged. Moreover, the sufficient crosslink density imparts the coating with good thermal stability and outstanding anti-corrosion performance in extremely corrosive environments. This research presents a facile and effective approach for developing stain and corrosion-resistant PDMS-modulated waterborne polyurethane materials with high protective reliability and long lifespan through the dual-crosslinking strategy.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and water resistance of castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane are mutually limited due to the presence of a hydrophilic chain extender. Herein, Arbutin (AT) was used as a crosslinking agent, and benzimidazole (CR-455) was utilized as an ultraviolet absorber, sustainable long fatty hydrophobic chain extenders, sorbitan monooleate (SP), glycerol laurate (GML), glycerin monostearate (GMS), and trimethylolpropane monooleate (TPM), were introduced into castor oil-based waterborne polyurethane (CWPU) backbones through molecular structure design respectively. Subsequently, the amount of SP was changed to prepare a series of waterborne polyurethane dispersions, and their emulsion and film properties were thoroughly investigated. The finding showed that the incorporation of long fatty hydrophobic chain extenders led to an increase in crosslinking density, thereby endowing CWPU films with good mechanical properties, water resistance, and anti-corrosion efficacy. Moreover, the bio-based content in the CWPU film had reached an impressive 90.9 %. The addition of SP content resulted in a gradual improvement in the mechanical properties, water resistance, and corrosion resistance of CWPU-SP films. When the SP content was 40 %, due to the high strength of hydrogen bonds and the density of crosslinking in systems, the tensile strength, toughness, water absorption rate, and corrosion protection efficiency of the CWPU-SP40 film reached 18.1 MPa, 20 MJ/m3,7.7 %, and 98.47 %, respectively. Particularly, the prepared transparent CWPU films exhibited complete UV shielding. This work would pave the way for the application of bio-based waterborne polyurethanes in high-performance coatings, such as anti-corrosion and sunscreen.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (PU) flame retarding gum (I) was synthesized with a special technology by use of waterborne PU as the base material and the added flame-retardants and auxiliary agents. Zeta potential and TEM tests stated the waterborne PU gum absorbed and partially occluded the flame retardants, and the resulted I had good stability. The flame retarding finishing technology was optimized by the orthogonal experiments, and the piloting experiments were carried out in Hongshan Coating Factory, Xiaoshan. The results showed that the finished fabrics attained the high level of the standard fort flame retardancy and other properties.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane(WPU)was prepared by using toluene diisocynate(TDI)and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as raw materials,and 2,2-dimethylolbutyric acid as chain extender.Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA)was used to terminate WPU.The self-emulsifying method was adopted to prepare HEMA-grafted WPU(HEMA-WPU)emulsion.Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TG)were used to characterize the molecular structure and thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU.Compared with WPU,the thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU was raised obviously.The inter-laminar shear strength(ILSS)of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite samples after sizing by the prepared emulsion was raised by 7.5%,reaching 64.5 MPa,compared with the un-sized samples.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) often have limitations like inadequate weathering resistance and thermal stability. To overcome these shortcomings, lignin has been selected as a modifier for its abundant availability, renewability, and biocompatibility. This study synthesized a cationic WPU using isophorone diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol as raw materials. Hydrophilicity was attained through the inclusion of dihydroxyethyl dodecylamine as a chain extender, while the introduction of epoxy monomers and lignin served to modify the polyurethane. Furthermore, a dye dispersion for cotton fabric dyeing was prepared by combining the synthesized polyurethane, chitosan, and dyes. The cationic nature of the polyurethane played a crucial role in facilitating dye adhesion and uptake on the fabric surface, resulting in improved dyeing performance. The incorporation of epoxy side chains and chitosan cross-linking contributed to the excellent color fastness of the dyed fabrics. Moreover, the incorporation of lignin and chitosan endowed the fabric with antibacterial properties. Simultaneously, it provided effective UV protection, characterized by a high UV protection factor value for the fabrics. This lignin-modified WPU exhibits tremendous potential in applications such as textile coatings, adhesives, and color fixation agents. It effectively addresses the limitations of traditional WPUs and offers notable advantages, including a renewable source, cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility.

Improving water resistance of waterborne polyurethane coating with high transparency and good mechanical properties

Abstract:<p>Polyester based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions modified with hydroxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HPDMS) and sulfonate polyester diol were synthesized. The water resistance of WPU coating improved significantly when 5% HPDMS was used for modification, but it also leads to the decreasing of dispersion stability and damages in the mechanical properties and transparency of WPU coating. It was found that incorporating ionic groups in soft segments (sulfonate polyester diol) of WPU can obtain a coating with good water resistance where only 0.5% HPDMS is needed. In this case, the water swelling of WPU coating decreased to 7.0% while the pure WPU was 15.2%. Meanwhile, the mechanical and optical properties of modified coating change slightly. Its tensile strength was 62.6 MPa, and its light transmittance at 532 nm was 83.8%. Zeta potential test indicated the introduction of sulfonate polyester diol could improve the stability of WPU dispersions. The water resistance improvement of the WPU coating could be ascribe to the decrease of surface free energy and the change of phase separation degree. The water swelling, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and contact angle test results demonstrated the migration of HPDMS and sulfonate polyester diol segments on the coating surface. The phase separation of WPU coatings was measured by dynamic thermomechanical analysis. The modified WPU with excellent water resistance is promising in the application of transparent coatings.</p>

Abstract:A novel UV crosslinking waterborne siloxane-polyurethane (UV-WPU) was synthesized using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), glycidyl azide polymer (GAP), polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG), dihydroxybutyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane (DHPDMS), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as main materials. The structure of UV-WPU was verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) was used to study the UV crosslinking reaction kinetics of UV-WPU under UV irradiation. The properties of UV-WPU coatings by UV and thermal curing was comparatively analyzed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), as well as gel fraction, water resistance and water contact measurements. The gel fraction and TGA analyses also confirmed the formation of crosslinking structure in the UV-WPU structure after UV curing process. Abstract:The waterborne polyurethane (PU) prepolymer was first prepared based on isophorone diisocyanate, polyether polyol (NJ-210), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate via in situ method. The crosslinked waterborne polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) dispersions were prepared with the different functional crosslinkers. The chemical structures, optical transparency, and thermal properties of PU and PUA were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Some physical properties of the aqueous dispersions such as viscosity, particle size, and surface tension were measured. Some mechanical performances and solvent resistance of PUA films were systemically investigated. The experimental results showed that the particle sizes of the crosslinked PUA aqueous dispersions were larger than the PU and increased from 57.3 to 254.4 nm. When the ratios of BA/St, BA/TPGDA, and BA/TMPTA were 70/30, PUA films exhibited excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the film were 2.17 MPa and 197.19%. When the ratio of BA/St was 30/70, the film had excellent water resistance and was only 6.47%. The obtained PUA composites have great potential application such as coatings, leather finishing, adhesives, sealants, plastic coatings, and wood finishes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A series of modified waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with various epoxy contents was synthesized from poly (propylene carbonate) diol (PPCD)-based polyurethane prepolymer and ring-opening epoxy resin (RO-EP). The particle size, storage stability, and freeze-thaw resistance of the emulsions were examined. The pencil hardness and adhesion level of the films were tested. The structure of the modified waterborne polyurethane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the modified waterborne polyurethane was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The corrosion resistance of emulsion coating was tested by the salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The waterborne polyurethane emulsion modified by RO-EP had excellent storage stability. When the content of the ring-opening epoxy resin was 10 wt%, the particle size of WPU was the smallest. The corresponding coating had excellent hardness and adhesion level. The salt spray and EIS test showed that the WPU coating with 10% RO-EP had superior corrosion resistance.

Abstract:The title waterborne polyurethane emulsion modified by epoxy resin was prepared using toluene diisocyanate(TDI),polyether(GE-210),1,4-butanediol(BDO),dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA),epoxy resin and hydroxypropyl acrylate(HPA).Effects of the molar ratio of the —NCO and the —OH group in the prepolymer(R),the content of small molecule chain extenders,hydrophilic chain extender and epoxy resin on the size,viscosity,stability of the emulsion and water-resistance of the film was studied.The experimental results showed that the water resistance of WPU was improved,when the R was 6~7,BDO addition level was about 7%~8%,DMPA 6%~7%,epoxy resin 6%~7%,as well as good appearance and stability of the emulsion,which could be used as a WPU resin for waterborne coatings with excellent performance.

Abstract:The most notable features of polyurea are its fast reaction, energy-saving and high efficiency. In order to meet the needs of environmental protection, waterborne polyurea (WPUA) has become a research hotspot. However, the presence of hydrophilic groups in WPUA reduces its solvent resistance, heat resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, it is necessary and valuable to develop a high-performance WPUA. In this study, epoxy-modified waterborne polyurea (WPUAE) emulsions were prepared using epoxy resin as a modifier. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that E44 was successfully introduced into the molecular chain of WPUA. The WPUAE was tested for gel fraction, adhesion, contact angle, solvent resistance, tensile properties and thermal stability. The results showed that when the E44 content was 8 wt%, the performance of WPUAE was best, the adhesion of WPUAE coating film was 1.53 MPa, the gel fraction, water contact angle, water absorption, toluene absorption, tensile strength and decomposition temperature were 96.94%, 70.3°, 16.43%, 131.04%, 9.05 MPa and 365 °C, respectively. The results showed that epoxy resin as an emulsion modifier improved the comprehensive properties of WPUA.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes emulsions (WPU) based on polyethylene carbonate diol (PECD) were synthesized, characterized and modified by polypropylene carbonate diol (PPCD) and organosilicon KH-792. The mechanical, thermal and hydrolysis resistance properties of waterborne polyurethanes were comprehensively investigated. The results show that PECD based WPU has very excellent mechanical properties. The tensile strength and the elongation at break the PU was up to 73 MPa and 1040%, which was much higher than that reported for similar types of PPCD-based WPU. It was found that water absorption of PECD based WPU can be decreased dramatically, from 40.9% to 21.1%, after 50% PECD was replaced by PPCD, while tensile strength only decreased from 73.0 MPa to 63.4 MPa. The addition of KH-792 has great influence on PECD based WPU, when 1% KH-792 was added, the water absorption rate decreased from 21.1% to 11.88%, the mechanical strength remained at 63.3 MPa, the WPU film remained transparent after soaking in 80 °C hot water for 4 h.

Abstract:The development of coating and emulsion with excellent scratch resistance, friction resistance, high transparency, and yellowing resistance is of great significance for protecting the substrate, reducing the wear of the material, and improving the curing and. drying speed of the coating. Therefore, a double-crosslinked waterborne polyurethane (DCWPU) was prepared in this paper to make up for the shortcomings of slow drying speed and poor toughness of the coating film in a single cross-linked system. Meanwhile, DCWPU utilizes chemical bonding crosslinking network and high-density hydrogen bonding array to cooperate with each other, which is beneficial to improve the mechanical properties of the double-crosslinking system. Herein, 3 (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) was introduced as the intramolecular crosslinking agent, and isophorone isocyanate trimer (IPDI-3), which has the same keto azocyclic structure as THEIC , was added as the post crosslinking agent to further increase the crosslinking degree of the system. The effects of cross-linked monomer content in waterborne polyurethane on scratch resistance, friction resistance, and corresponding emulsion solid content of the coating were studied in the work. It was found that with the increase of double cross-linked monomer content, the hydrogen bond force could be effectively improved, and the mechanical properties, wear resistance and solid content of the emulsion could be significantly improved. It is worth mentioning that DCWPU-3 showed the best comprehensive properties. The emulsion solid content was 48.9%, the tensile strength of the film was increased to 21.8 MPa, the elongation at break was 627.2%, the hardness was 4 H, and the wear amount was 1.2 mg.
