Abstract:A series of waterborne UV-curable polyurethane acrylates were synthesized.Their coatings properties were investigated.The influences of radiation time,film thickness,photoinitiator dosage,molecular structure and other factors on the coating properties were discussed.Therefore a series of UV curable polyurethane acrylate emulsions with excellent mechanical properties and decorative effect.The crosshatch adhensions of the coatings were between 0 and 1.Impact strengths are above 50 cm.The pencil hardness of the coatings film are over 3H.

Abstract:Two kinds of acrylate-modified polyesters were synthesized, one of the two is semi-crystalline while the other is amorphous, and the UV-curable powder coatings with two components can be made up by mixing these two kinds of polyesters in different ratios. Experiments show that the introduction of semi-crystalline polyester into the coating will substantially improve the direct and reverse impact resistance and the crosshatch adhesion of the cured film while the other general properties of the UV-curable powder coatings remain excellent.

Abstract:Waterborne acrylic resin is a kind of environmental protection resin, which is widely used in coatings, bridges, ships, and locomotives. In order to be better used in various fields, modification of waterborne acrylic resin has attracted much attention. In this paper, we introduce the method to synthesize waterborne acrylic resins, the composition of the resin, and basic properties of each monomer. According to the requirements of different properties of the resin, the modification mechanism and methods of the resin are discussed, including thermal performance, corrosion resistance, mechanical property, and water resistance. The applications of waterborne acrylic resin in the construction, automobile, metal anticorrosion, and furniture industries are discussed with detailed examples. Finally, the prospect of waterborne acrylic resin is proposed.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) prepolymer was first prepared based on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polyether polyol (NJ-210), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate (HEMA) via an in situ method. A series of waterborne polyurethane-acrylate (WPUA) dispersions were obtained with different proportions of acrylate (butyl acryolate and ethyl acrylate) and initiating agent by in situ dispersion technique. The structures and thermal properties of prepared WPU and WPUA were analyzed and characterized with FT-IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and DSC. Performance of the emulsion and film was studied by means of apparent viscosity, particle size and polydispersity, surface tension, and mechanical properties. The results indicated that the particle sizes of the WPUA dispersions were larger than those of the pure WPU and the solvent resistance and mechanical properties of WPUA films were improved over those of the WPU film. The film had the greatest hardness and the least water absorption when the BA:EA mass ratio was 50:50. The obtained WPUAs have great potential application such as coatings, leather finishing, adhesives, sealants, plastic coatings, and wood finishes.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane(WPU)was prepared by using toluene diisocynate(TDI)and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as raw materials,and 2,2-dimethylolbutyric acid as chain extender.Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA)was used to terminate WPU.The self-emulsifying method was adopted to prepare HEMA-grafted WPU(HEMA-WPU)emulsion.Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TG)were used to characterize the molecular structure and thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU.Compared with WPU,the thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU was raised obviously.The inter-laminar shear strength(ILSS)of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite samples after sizing by the prepared emulsion was raised by 7.5%,reaching 64.5 MPa,compared with the un-sized samples.

Abstract:To improve the stability of suspension swelling graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile-chlorinated polyethylene-styrene(AN-CPE-St) and to prepare AN-CPE-St copolymers with suitable particle characteristics,the function of polyvinyl alcohol/hydroxyapatite(PVA/HAP) composite suspending agents in the suspension copolymerization was investigated.The particle features of the obtained copolymers and the distribution of suspending agents in the copolymer particles were characterized and the dispersion and stabilization function of composite suspending agents were illustrated.The results show that the agglomeration of copolymer particles occurs in the polymerization when PVA or HAP is used individually.Copolymer particles have regular shape when PVA/HAP composite suspending agents with mass ratio of(1.0∶2.2) are applied.The average size of copolymer particles decreases and the content of fine AN-St copolymer particles increases with the increasing mass fraction of the composite suspending agents.After adopting PVA/HAP composite suspending agents,the two-layer protective films formed at the surface of the dispersed oil phase can provide colloidal protection and mechanical isolation to the oil phase.

Special emphasis was put on its preparation condition and reaction mechanism, as well as the applicability of dealing with some typical polluted water from paper making industry and oil contamination. Based on discussions above, future research perspectives on its synthesis and application were proposed.

Abstract:A novel two step polymerization method which combined the advantages of both solution polymerization and emulsion polymerization was proposed for emulsifier-free, waterborne hydroxyl functional polyacrylate with low VOC level. The obtained resin provided a good appearance and moderate viscosity. The structure of resins was characterized by fourier transfer infrared (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The hydroxyl polyacrylate dispersion (PAD) named as PAT-2 was cured with hydrophilically modified polyisocyanate curing agent (Bayhydur XP 2655) to obtain two component waterborne polyurethane (2K-WPU) coatings. FTIR was employed to investigate the structure of the cured coatings. The 2K-WPU coatings showed high gloss and hardness, good adhesion, excellent impact resistance and superior water and chemical resistance, which denotes wide application on industrial anti-corrosive coatings fields.

Abstract:Eco-friendly waterborne coatings frequently exhibit poor corrosion resistance, high solvent content, and extended curing times, attributed to the excessive employment of hydrophilic groups and petroleum-derived polyols. In this work, aniline trimer (ACAT) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used as chain extenders. E-44 epoxy resin was subsequently utilized to modify the system and an aniline trimer-modified waterborne polyurethane (AT-WPU) dispersion was prepared and characterized. The chemical structure of the synthesized ACAT was characterized employing 1H NMR, ESI-MS, and FTIR spectroscopy. The structure and coating performance of the AT-WPU dispersion were investigated utilizing FTIR, particle size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, DSC, TEM, SEM, and electrochemical corrosion testing. The results demonstrate that the aniline trimer-modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion was successfully synthesized. Additionally, the DSC analysis results and thermogravimetric graphs indicate that the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of the coatings increased with the addition of aniline trimer. As the aniline trimer content increased, the hardness and adhesion of the coatings were significantly enhanced. In the electrochemical corrosion assessment, the corrosion current density of AT-WPU-3 attained 7.245 × 10−9 A·cm−2, and the corrosion rate was as low as 0.08 μm·Y−1, indicating excellent corrosion resistance. The present study provides promising practical applications in the domain of metal material protection.

Abstract:In this study, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft, and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the synthesized acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks and the best recipe was selected out. Our work will provide an idea of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders. The urge to protect the deteriorating ecosystem is compelling us to develop environmental‐friendly materials. In this paper, three different kinds of waterborne polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized with different hard, soft and hydroxyl‐containing functional monomers by semi‐continuous seed emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the influences of different monomers on the performances such as viscosity, adhesion, surface tension, particle size, stability, and contact angle were also investigated. Attractively, conclusions were deduced that with the growth of the monomer's alkyl chain length, the viscosity gradually increases and the surface tension gradually decreases. On the other hand, different functional monomers also have effect on the properties of the synthesized acrylic emulsions. Then the synthesized water‐based acrylic emulsions were used as binders for water‐based inks, the adhesion as well as initial dryness were tested and the recipe for water‐based ink with better performances was selected out. Our work maybe ignites a spark for the designation of acrylic emulsions for water‐based inks binders.

Abstract:Monomethacryloyloxy-terminated fluorinated oligomers (PPFOMA-GMA and PHFBMA-GMA) and methyl allyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether-modified epoxy resin (HPEGEA) were successfully synthesized and used as reactive additives and emulsifier for epoxy acrylate, respectively. FTIR, <sup>1</sup>H NMR, and GPC were used to characterize the structures of PPFOMA-GMA, PHFBMA-GMA, and HPEGEA. The influence of the concentrations of PPFOMA-GMA and PHFBMA-GMA on the properties of waterborne epoxy acrylate (WEA) resin coatings was investigated. The surface energy of waterborne epoxy acrylate coating was decreased from 38.20 mN/m to 15.31 mN/m by adding just 0.21 wt% PPFOMA-GMA, indicating its high effectiveness in improving the hydrophobic properties of the surface. The surface compositions of the WEA resin coatings (with 0.85 wt% PPFOMA-GMA or 0.85 wt% PHFBMA-GMA) were characterized by XPS. The XPS results confirmed the quantitative enrichment of fluorine atoms on the surface. What is more, the physical properties of waterborne epoxy acrylate coatings prepared with different concentrations of fluorinated reactive additive, such as optical transmittance, adhesion (on glass, PET, and tinplate), pencil hardness, water absorption, and thermal properties, were also analyzed in detail. Hence, the waterborne epoxy acrylate coatings prepared with low concentrations of reactive additives were economical and have potential for large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:A series of waterborne UV-curable acrylated polyurethanes were synthesized with the objective to improve their mechanical properties and resistance to water.Toluene 2,4-diisocyanate(TDI),polyethylene glycol(PEG),2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA),and β-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) were used as the raw materials.1H-NMR analysis shows that less than 15% of the isocyanate groups participated in side reactions during the synthesis reaction.Dynamic light scattering measurements show that the particle size in the dispersions decreased with increasing DMPA content in the polymers.The resistance to water of the cured coatings is better than that of uncured coatings.Both the glass transition temperature and the hardness of the cured coatings increased with increasing acrylate group content in the polymers.

Abstract:A serious of waterborne hydroxyl-functional polyurethane/acrylic (PUA) emulsions for two-component coatings was prepared by copolymerizing different weight ratios of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA)/butyl acrylate (BA) with methyl methacrylate and acrylic-terminated polyurethane dispersion via an emulsion process. The results showed that increasing the weight ratio of HEA/BA led to a decrease in the average particle sizes and a narrowing in the particle size distribution, but an increase in the viscosity of their emulsions. Meanwhile, their films showed increased thermal resistance, adhesion on substrate, tensile strength, and hardness, but decreased water resistance and enhanced wettability. When the emulsions were applied in two-component coatings, their water resistance was greatly improved and the wettability was reduced; in addition, their glass transition temperature, thermal stability, adhesion on substrate, tensile strength, and hardness were further increased. It was suggested that hydroxyl groups of PUA can not only engage in the intramolecular and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonding, but also form covalently crosslinked networks with polyisocyanate in their films.

Abstract:Introducing a lipophilic group into a cationic polymer flocculant can effectively improve the flocculation performance for treating oilfield-produced water. Copolymerization of acrylate and cationic monomers is the most commonly used method; however, the acrylate content in the copolymer is limited by its solubility in water. In this study, a polymer reaction method was proposed to introduce a suitable acrylate into a cationic polymer to improve flocculation performance. Acrylate was introduced into the copolymer (PDD) of methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC) and diallylamine (DAA) via the reaction between acrylate and the secondary amine in PDD. The effects of the acrylate type, amount of acrylate introduced, and reaction conditions on the flocculation performance of the product were investigated. The experimental results showed that the hydroxy-terminated acrylate-modified PDD exhibited considerably better performance than PDD, especially the hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA)-modified PDD (PDD-HEA). When the dosage was 20 mg/L, the oil removal of PDD-HEA was 95.8 %, which was 1.5 times higher than that of PDD. The introduction of HEA can improve the ability of PDD to aggregate oil droplets, but it causes curling of the PDD molecular chain and weakens its bridging and flocculation ability. Therefore, a higher amount of HEA introduced does not necessarily lead to a better performance of the PDD-HEA. The most suitable modification degree of the structural units in PDD was 3.3 %. This study provides new insights into the synthesis and properties of hydrophobically modified cationic polymer flocculants and is helpful for the development of flocculants for oilfield-produced water treatment.

Abstract:Conventional waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has poor water resistance and poor overall performance, which limits its application in outdoor coatings. A solution to this problem is urgently needed. The introduction of fluorine-containing groups can effectively improve the water resistance of WPU. In this study, a new fluorinated chain extender (HFBMA-HPA) synthesized by free radical copolymerization and epoxy resin (E-44) were used to co-modify WPU, and five waterborne fluorinated polyurethane (WFPU) emulsions with different fluorine contents were prepared by the self-emulsification method. The effects of HFBMA-HPA content on the emulsion particle properties, coating surface properties, mechanical properties, water resistance, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results showed that the WFPU coating had excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. As the content of HFBMA-HPA increased from 0 wt% to 14 wt%, the water resistance of the WFPU coating gradually increased, the water contact angle (WCA) increased from 73° to 98°, the water absorption decreased from 7.847% to 3.062%, and the surface energy decreased from 32.8 mN/m to 22.6 mN/m. The coatings also showed impressive performances in the adhesion and flexibility tests in extreme conditions. This study provides a waterborne fluorinated polyurethane material with excellent comprehensive performance that has potential application value in the field of outdoor waterproof and anticorrosion coatings.

Abstract:<p>Homogenous waterborne polyurethane/polyacrylate emulsions were synthesized based on the prepared polyurethane and polyacrylate through a facile process. The attention was attracted to the miscibility and performance of waterborne polyurethane and polyacrylate. The structures and properties of waterborne polyurethane and waterborne polyurethane/polyacrylate samples were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffractometer, thermogravimetric, and so forth, as well as solid content and tensile testing. The results showed that the micro morphology of waterborne polyurethane/polyacrylate emulsion presented single‐phase structure with the stoichiometric polyacrylate content increasing from 33% to 80% to waterborne polyurethane. The waterborne polyurethane/polyacrylate films surface is rich in polyacrylate phase. Meanwhile, waterborne polyurethane/polyacrylate composites showed significant improvement in thermal stability and elongation at break, smaller particle size and narrower particle size distribution comparing with waterborne polyurethane.</p>
