Abstract:Aiming at technical problems in operation, maintenance and overhaul of large gas-steam combined cycle generating units, this paper summarizes research status and analyzes current research focus from four aspects, namely vibration fault in single-shaft gas turbine and steam turbine rotor system, quick start method of combined cycle steam turbine, maintenance and overhaul strategy of thermal parts in gas turbine, optimiza-tion technology of IGV control and temperature control line in gas turbine. Meanwhile, the paper points out major problems and puts forward further investigation direction.

Abstract:Since the classical control theory which was represented by Qian Xue-sen’s Engineering Cybernetics and modern control theory which was represented by the linear system and optimal control came into being in the 1950’s -1960’s, fruitful results of theoretical innovation and industrial application have been made and widely adopted in power system. In view of the numerous literatures in this research field, this paper borrows the achievements in the area of large generator excitation control during the past four decades as clues, launches a comprehensive survey and compares the classic control theory with modern control theory from respects of stability, optimality and robustness, finally reveals the intrinsic complementary between them. The modern control is the extension and development of classical control, while the classical control is the basis of modern control, so their combination is so called advanced control theory. Moreover, based on summarizing the application of advanced control theory in power system, this paper gives some outlook on the future development of advanced power system control technologies.

Abstract:Power industry restructuring and hence establishment of electricity markets lead to significant challenges to power system planning, operation and control. Many experiences gained and lessons learnt from operation of existing power markets. However in the new market environment, some old power system planning, operation and control issues become much more difficult to solve and new problems arise, and up to now quite a lot of problems still remain unsolved. Challenges of market-based operation of power systems are discussed including: market structure design, IT system requirement, congestion management, ancillary service provision, market power in electricity markets, strategic bidding for generation companies, and generation and network expansion in the market environment. The objective of this paper is to stimulate further discussions and investigations rather than to solve these problems.

Abstract:Inverter-based resources (IBRs) are playing a major role in modern power systems, and the installation of IBRs is still growing in recent years, which necessitates the continuous development of grid codes and requirements, e.g. National Grid GC0137 in 2021 and IEEE Std. 2800 in 2022. In the meanwhile, conventional control strategies (i.e., grid-following, GFL) are facing challenges when dealing with a high-percentation-IBR power system, especially in faulty conditions. Considering this, new control schemes like grid-forming (GFM) control has been put forward to offer a stable voltage for the grid. However, certain concepts and definitions remain unclear. With the above concerns, a review of the recent requirements for IBRs and GFM technologies is given in this paper, where further perspectives and open discussions are presented.

Abstract:With the intensifying energy crisis and environmental pollution, the Energy Internet and corresponding patterns of energy use have been attracting more and more attention. In this paper, the basic concept and characteristics of the Energy Internet are summarized, and its basic structural framework is analyzed in detail. On this basis,couplings between the electric power system and other systems such as the cooling and heating system, the natural gas system, and the traffic system are analyzed, and the operation and planning of integrated energy systems in both deterministic and uncertain environments are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the research prospects and main technical challenges of the Energy Internet are discussed.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:The integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) has the advantages of high voltage, high current, high reliability, and low manufacturing costs and has the potential to replace thyristor devices in the field of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. Over time, the development and manufacture of IGCT devices, drivers, and valve bodies have gradually matured, but the modeling and control technology of HVDC systems based on IGCT needs further research. This review aims to discuss the research status of key technologies of HVDC system modeling and control based on the IGCT in recent years, including the development of HVDC systems and the application potential of the IGCT, the efficient simulation and modeling technology of the IGCT HVDC system, and the key problems of HVDC system control technology based on the IGCT. At the same time, according to the author’s point of view, the existing problems and difficulties are extracted, and the next development ideas are clarified.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern power systems, it is imperative to establish an evaluation index system for monitoring power utilities. Previous researches have mainly focused on the evaluation of power system operation regarding to a few aspects, lack of an integrated evaluation to assess the overall performance of power industry. This paper presents a new comprehensive evaluation index system. The index system contains five categories covering the assessment on reliability, economy, power quality, energy efficiency and fairness, and provides a reference for achieving optimal dispatching and management of power systems.

Abstract:Operation risk is a measure of the system’s exposure to failure that accounts for both likelihood and severity. By comparing the essential definitions of operation risk and the traditional reliability, it is proved that they are identical on mathematics excepting their application scenarios. Operation risk evaluation should be developed as a quantitative analysis tool for power system stochastic analysis. And it is based on reliability theorem dispatching automation technique and utility operation management. An operation risk evaluation method is proposed in this paper, which inherits and develops the reliability and dispatching automation techniques. In this method, non-sequential Monte-Carlo simulation and hierarchical data structure are adopted in state selection; dynamic power flow is applied in probabilistic adequacy evaluation while step by step simulation is used in probabilistic stability evaluation. Further more, new risk indices are defined to overcome the shortcoming existing in current risk research such as masking. And detail implementation of the method is also given in this paper. The numerical tests of WSCC-9, IEEE-39 and Jinhua power network are proposed, which prove the proposed algorithm could be used for generation dispatching, load shedding and re-closure types selection.

Abstract:Security constrained unit commitment (SCUC), as the key procedure of generation scheduling, has been widely used in electricity markets abroad. With the promotion of lean management in power dispatch and the implementation of energy conservation based power generation dispatch, the system operator has an increasingly demanding requirement on the secure and economic operations. Therefore, the research and applications of SCUC have been paid more and more attention. This paper summarized the patterns, mathematical models and major algorithms of SCUC. Based on the survey of the state-of-the-art of SCUC research and industrial applications in China and abroad, the potential research topics were proposed. Hopefully, this paper could be an important reference for the theoretical study and industrial applications of generation scheduling in China.
