Abstract:An experimental study on the treatment of wastewater containing nitrobenzene by Ultrasound/Fenton's reagent was conducted with a set of reactors at different conditions. Nitrobenzene was remarkably decomposed under the conditions of the experiment. The effect of process parameters such as initial pH of wastewater, sonication time (reaction time), initial nitrobenzene concentration, initial ferrous ion concentration, initial hydrogen peroxide concentration and ultrasound intensity was studied. Ultrasound irradiation enhanced the Fenton's reaction. The removal efficiency of nitrobenzene was higher under acidic condition. The removal efficiency of nitrobenzene improved by increasing the sound intensity and reaction time. The initial concentration of 100 mg/L nitrobenzene wastewater decreased to 6.46 mg/L in about 40 min by ultrasound and the Fenton's reagent. The combining oxidation effect of ultrasound and the Fenton's reagent was stronger than that of either ultrasound or the Fenton's reagent alone. The optimum concentrations of H 2O 2 and Fe 2+ were 200 and 15 mg/L, respectively. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 222nd ACS National Meeting (Chicago, IL 8/26-30/2001).
