Abstract:Nano-scaled pure and iron doping Titanium Dioxide prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis were obtained. Two methods, step precipitation and co-precipitation, were applied in preparing the iron doping samples. The crystallization and decomposition processes were extensively investigated by methods of X-ray diffraction and TEM. The grain sizes under series of calcinating temperatures were computed according to Voigt function analysis. The results of TEM images also justified the computed grain size. The results showed that Titanium Dioxide prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis is amorphous, and that no obvious: crystallization temperature or exothermic peaks were observed, contrary to the some previous reports. The computation applying the nuclei growth equation showed that the crystal grain growth of the pure and co-precipitation samples can be divided into 2 steps. The growth activation energy of the former step is 10.7kJ . mol(-1) and 8.6kJ . mol(-1), respectively and that of the latter step is 111.6kJ . mol(-1). As to the step precipitation samples, there showed no obvious difference in crystal growth activation energies for the 2 steps, and for the transformation of anantase to rutile was almost completed before 600 degrees C. There was evidence that the iron doping accelerated the transformation of rutile to anatase and this is especially obvious in step precipitation samples.

Abstract:The thermal decompositions (including TG and DSC) of nickel carbide were studied under different atmospheres of Ar, air and H2. X-ray diffraction combined with element analysis indicated that nickel metal, together with solid amorphous carbon, was formed during Ni3C decomposition in Ar atmosphere, accompanying mass invariant in this process. While in H2 atmosphere nickel metal was the only residual from reactions. The carbon component of nickel carbide reacted with H2 to form methane as the main volatile gases. Both the nickel and carbon components of Ni3C reacted with O2 in the air to form their corresponding oxides. Moreover, we calculated the activation energy for the decomposition process and the molar enthalpy of formation of Ni3C based on the thermal analysis.

Abstract:The pure and Fe doping TiO2 xerogel powders were prepared by sol-gel method, Thermal stability of the TiO2 xerogel powders were investigated in air by TC-DTA. At the several temperature elevating stages, the samples were submitted to IR analyzing for the elucidation of decomposition process. The crystallization and phase transformation of the TiO2 xerogel powders, from amorphous to anatase and from anatase to rutile, were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was shown that the xerogel powders obtained were amorphous. Upon heating, the amorphous powders crystallized continuously. No crystallization temperature previously reported in the literature was observed.

Abstract:TG-DSC-MS (thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry-mass spectrometry) coupling techniques were used to make a simultaneous characterizing study for the thermal decomposition process of the carbon nanotube (CNT)/SiO2 precursor powders prepared by rapid sol-gel method. The thermal stability of the CNT and the SiO2 pure gel were investigated by TG-DSC. The results showed that the oxidation of CNT began from 530 and combusted at about 678 degrees C at the heating rate of 10 degrees C min(-1) in air. Moreover, the faster the heating rate, the higher the temperature of CNT combustion. The appropriate calcinations temperature of the CNT/SiO2 precursor powders should be held for 1 h at 500 degrees C.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, NiCrAlY coating was deposited on TC4 titanium alloy using arc ion plating, and the stability of NiCrAlY coating/TC4 substrate system under pure thermal exposure was analyzed in a wide temperature range. During the thermal exposure, β → γ′ → γ phase transformation takes place in the NiCrAlY coating. The NiCrAlY coating phases totally decompose above the allotropic transformation temperature of TC4. The allotropic transformation of α-Ti to β-Ti of the substrate significantly influences the stability of NiCrAlY coating/TC4 substrate system. NiCrAlY coating elements are mainly consumed by interfacial reactions below the allotropic transformation temperature of TC4. Above the allotropic transformation temperature of TC4, NiCrAlY coating elements are mainly consumed by element dissolution in β-Ti. The NiCrAlY coating totally degrades for the dissolution of coating elements in the substrate to form thick β-Ti stabilized layer.

Characterization and photocatalytic activity of Ni-doped tiO2 nano photocatalysts prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis]

Abstract:Ni-doped TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis and some properties, such as optical absorption, crystal type, grain size distribution and chemistry transformation during temperature rising were characterized by UV-Vis DRS, X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser light dispersion grain size measurement machine and TG-DSC respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared photocatalysts under visible light irradiation were evaluated by monitoring the degradation of methylene blue dye, a probe pollutant. The results indicate that the Ni-doped TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by low temperature combustion synthesis shift the optical absorption threshold to visible light, the band gap of 0.4 Ni-TiO2 (atomic ratio) is 2.3 eV, which corresponds to a 564 nm threshold in the visible light range. The crystal type of photocatalyst is anatase TiO2 and the content of NiTiO3 rise with the increase of Ni dopant. The grain size of photocatalyst distributes from 50 to 150nm, which account for 96.9% of entire quantity. During temperature rising, the TiO2 phase in photocatalyst transforms from amorphous structure to anatase and NiTiO3 crystallites appear at 445.2 degrees C. After 150 min visible light irradiation, 93.9% of methylene blue dye are degraded over 0.4 Ni-TiO2 photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of Ni doped TiO2 is higher than that of P25 under identical conditions.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition processes of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and calcium nitrite were studied by TG/DSCFTIR, TG-MS and in-situ DRIFTS. Calcium nitrate tetrahydrate melts at ca. 50 ???C and then 1/4, 1/2 and 1/4 of water molecules are released in the range of 50???150 ???C, 160???180 ???C and 190???220 ???C respectively. Calcium nitrate melts at ca. 550 ???C and is consecutively decomposed into CaO, O2, NO and NO2, where the ratio of NO to NO2 changes from 2:1 to 1:1 after decomposition maximum point at ca. 580 ???C. After melting at ca. 380 ???C, calcium nitrite is decomposed into calcium nitrate, CaO and NO first in the range of 470???550 ???C, overlapped with the decomposition of calcium nitrate in the range of 550???600 ???C. Both decomposition paths are not changed by excess oxygen which only oxidizes part of NO to NO2 in the gas phase.

Abstract:Polyaniline/NiO (PANI/NiO) composites were synthesized by in situ polymerization at the presence of HCl (as dopant). FTIR, TEM and XRD were used to characterize the composites. Thermogravimetry (TG)–mass spectrometer (MS) and temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) were used to study the thermal stability, decomposition and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of the composites, respectively. FTIR and XRD results showed that NiO nanoparticles connected with PANI chains in the PANI/NiO composites. TEM results exhibited that the morphologies of PANI/NiO composites were mostly spherical, which were different from the wirelike PANI. TG–MS curves indicated that the products for oxidative degradation of both PANI and PANI/NiO composite were H 2 O, CO 2 , NO and NO 2 . TG curves showed that with NiO contents increased in PANI/NiO composites, thermal stability of PANI/NiO composites increased firstly and then decreased when the NiO content was higher than 66.2 wt%. T g of PANI/NiO composites also increased from 163.19 to 252.36 °C with NiO content increasing from 0 to 50 wt%, and then decreased with NiO content increasing continuously.

Abstract:The formation mechanism of TiC particles in a Ni-Ti-C system were revealed by using differential thermal analysis (DTA), XRD, and SEM to identify the reaction products in different temperature ranges. The results indicated that the synthesis mechanism of TiC in Ni-Ti-C system was complex; several reactions were involved in the combustion synthesis of TiC-Ni composite. The Ni-Ti intermediate phases play important roles during the formation of TiC. Moreover, the influence of heating rate on the size range of TiC was also discussed.

Abstract:Ni-Fe hydrotalcites with Ni/Fe molar ratios of 1, 2, 3, 6 and 10 were prepared by coprecipitation. TG-DTA results showed that the hydrotalcites decomposed in two stages, corresponding to two endothermic peaks around 200 and 300 degrees C. After calcination at 400 degrees C, the hydrotalcites were converted to NiFeO mixed oxides with high surface areas around 100 m(2)/g, which exhibited the XRD pattern of NiO only. TPR studies of the mixed oxides indicated that the reduction temperatures decreased with increasing Ni content, inconsistent with the in situ Mossbauer spectroscopic results which showed that the mixed oxide (Ni/Fe = 2) was easier to reduce than the Fe2O3 sample. Microcalorimetric adsorption of NH3 and CO2 revealed that the mixed oxide (Ni/Fe = 2) displayed intermediate acidity and basicity between those of the pure oxide NiO and Fe2O3. The mixed oxides after calcination at 800 degrees C possessed the phases of NiO and NiFe2O4 with the surface area around 15 m(2)/g, which exhibited moderate basicity with only a little weak acidity. Abstract:In this study, the thermal decomposition process of (NH4)2Cr2O7, including the effect of thermal decomposition temperature on the physicochemical properties of products, thermal decomposition mechanism, and kinetics, was studied in detail. The phase compositions, crystal structures, and micromorphology of thermal decomposition products were determined based on XRD and SEM analysis. The effect of thermal decomposition temperature on particle size, specific surface area, and chromaticity was investigated systematically. The lowest thermal decomposition temperature was determined, and the reaction equations were conjectured. The thermal decomposition mechanism of (NH4)2Cr2O7 was further revealed at the molecular level using FT-IR analysis and DFT calculation. At last, Kissinger and Kissinger-Crane methods calculated the kinetic parameters of (NH4)2Cr2O7 thermal decomposition, and the rate equation was established.

Abstract:Synthesis of nickel oxide (NiO) nanorods was achieved by thermal decomposition of the precursor of NiC2O4 obtained via chemical reaction between Ni(CH3COO)2·2H2O and H2C2O4·2H2O in the presence of surfactant nonyl phenyl ether (9)/(5) (NP-9/5) and NaCl flux. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize the structure features and chemical compositions of the as-made nanorods. The results showed that the as-prepared nanorods is composed of NiO with diameter of 10–80 nm, and lengths ranging from 1 to 3 micrometers. The mechanism of formation of NiO nanorods is also discussed.
Thermal decomposition of cocrystal BTF/TNB nanoparticles simulated using density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics

Abstract:To understand the nano effect on the thermal decomposition of cocrystal explosives, this study simulated the initial decomposition of cocrystal BTF/TNB nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters of 2.2–3.0 nm at high temperatures of 2400–3000 K using density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics (DFTB-MD) with dispersion corrections. As indicated by the simulation results, the volume expansion of the nanoparticles competed with its decomposition, and smaller nanoparticles promoted the diffusion of the molecules and products in the nanoparticles. Moreover, the nanoparticles had a higher decomposition rate at higher temperatures, and smaller nanoparticles were associated with a higher decomposition rate and weaker interactions between intermediates and lattice. The number of clusters first increased and then decreased during the decomposition of the nanoparticles. The results of this study may help in understanding the effects of temperature and particle size on the thermal decomposition mechanisms of cocrystal explosives. Graphical abstract Using the density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics (DFTB-MD) with dispersion corrections, this study stimulated the initial decomposition processes of cocrystal BTF/TNB nanoparticles (NPs) at high temperatures. Abstract:Insufficient thermal stabilities of LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) families have aroused wide concerns and safety threats against large-scale application due to oxygen releasing and exothermic side reactions. Towards energy-dense batteries, single-crystalline NCM has been recently highlighted as a promising substitution in providing improved capacity retention beyond polycrystalline counterparts. However, their thermal-driven degradation mechanism remains under investigation and yet critically essential. In this contribution, we have rationally explored the thermal-driven fading behavior of delithiated single-crystalline and polycrystalline LiNi0.88Co0.07Mn0.05O2. Followed by the Avrami-Erofeev mechanism, a three-step decomposition procedure has been deconvoluted from time-resolved X-ray diffraction and physicochemical analysis, in terms of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) decomposition, layered-to-spinel transition and spinel-to-rock-salt transition. According to thermal kinetic analysis, polycrystalline LiNi0.88Co0.07Mn0.05O2 exhibits higher decomposition temperature and lower decomposition rate than that in single-crystalline counterparts, contributing to better thermal stability. This study has provided a fundamental understanding of the thermal decomposition of Ni-rich LiNi0.88Co0.07Mn0.05O2 cathodes and insights of NCM families protection.

Correlating Structural Changes and Gas Evolution during the Thermal Decomposition of Charged Li x Ni 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 Cathode

Abstract:In this work, we present results from the application of a new in situ technique that combines time- resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction and mass spectroscopy. We exploit this approach to provide direct correlation between structural changes and the evolution of gas that occurs during the thermal decomposition of (over)charged cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries. Results from charged LixNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode materials indicate that the evolution of both O2 and CO2 gases are strongly related to phase transitions that occur during thermal decomposition, specifically from the layered structure (space group R3 )t o the disordered spinel structure (Fd3), and finally to the rock- salt structure (Fm3). The state of charge also significantly affects both the structural changes and the evolution of oxygen as the temperature increases: the more extensive the charge, the lower the temperature of the phase transitions and the larger the oxygen release. Ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are also utilized to investigate the local structural and valence state changes in Ni and Co ions, and to characterize microscopic morphology changes. The combination of these advanced tools provides a unique approach to study fundamental aspects of the dynamic physical and chemical changes that occur during thermal decomposition of charged cathode materials in a systematic way.

Abstract:The chemical composition and solid state reaction of the nano-Ti(CN) base cermets in different sintering temperature were studied. The total carbon and oxygen content in compact were declined gradually with the increasing of sintering temperature, the nitrogen content in compact began to decline above 1100°C, the peak of de-gassing of N2 was formed before the emergence of liquid phase, the decomposition of N2 was arisen acutely above 1500°C. Mo2C and TaC diffused and took part in solid state reaction with Ti(CN) above 900°C, the solid state reaction was finished below 1200°C. WC diffused and took part in solid state reaction with Ti(CN) above 1100°C, it was dissolved below 1250°C, there were only two phases, Ti(CN) and Ni(Ni+Co), in the alloy.

Abstract:Decomposition of N2O on Cu-ZSM-5 was studied by temperature-programmed reaction (TPR), in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and XPS, It is found that the decomposed intermediates of N2O-dinitrogen and oxygen ion-show adsorption bands at 2161 cm(-1) and 910 cm(-1) in the IR spectrum, which can be assigned respectively to as N-N stretching vibration and a T-O stretching vibration perturbed by Cu2+. Both bands increase in intensity with temperature in the range 25-250 degrees C, Unlike the band at 2161 cm(-1), whose intensity decreases sharply above 250 degrees C, the band at 910 cm(-1) still persists at higher temperatures. The IR results agree with the TPR profiles of N-2 and O-2: N-2 starts to desorb at 250 degrees C whereas O-2 remains until 310 degrees C, where N2O decomposes. An oscillation in the O-2 signal is observed between 400 and 550 degrees C, along with a more evident but opposite oscillation in the N2O signal. The oscillation of N2O decomposition and the release rates of O-2 are found to correlate with the oxidation-reduction of copper sites by XPS, Based on this evidence, Cu+ is proposed to be the active centre for dissociative adsorption of N2O, The removal of adsorbed oxygen ions through recombination as O-2 or through interaction with protons trapped in the zeolite cavities may preserve Cu in the +1 oxidation state, which enables continuous decomposition of N2O, Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition of the cobalt dichloride hexahydrate and its kinetics were studied by TG and DTG technique under the non-isothermal condition with nitrogen atnosphere. The non-isothermal kinetic data and kinetic parameters were evaluated by means of integral and differential methods. The most probable mechanism functions of the thermal decomposition reaction for the first stage are: f(alpha) = (1 - alpha)(2) and g(alpha) = (1 - alpha)(-1) - 1.

Abstract:The thermal stability of the standard Ni/SiC and a TiW/Ni/SiC Ohmic contacts was investigated and compared after being aged at 400 °C in the N2 atmosphere. The Ohmic contact was characterized using a combination of I-V measurements, the optical microscopic imaging, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) techniques. It is shown that the standard Ni/SiC Ohmic contact failed after being aged at 400 °C for 20 h in the N2 atmosphere, while the TiW/Ni/SiC Ohmic contact could stand after 100 h. The TiW/Ni/SiC Ohmic contact was found kept a smooth surface morphology during the rapid thermal annealing and aging process, while the standard Ni/SiC Ohmic metal surface was found rougher. Both the Ohmic contact deteriorations after high temperature aging could be attributed to the formation of graphite which is confirmed by the XRD results. The XRD and AES results reveal that the better thermal stability of the TiW/Ni/SiC could be explained by the formation of CW3 and TiC, which deter the C atom diffusion to form graphite.
