Abstract:A series of uniaxial compression tests are performed on amorphous thermoplastics poly (ethylene terephthalate)-glycol (PETG). The stress response shows a dramatic change with temperature and strain rate, including the modulus, yield strength and strain hardening. The strain hardening behavior also shows a strong dependence on predeformation, representing as a less pronounced hardening response during the reloading process with increasing the predeformation temperature and decreasing the predeformation rate. This phenomenon cannot be described by the models assuming a temperature-dependent hardening modulus. In this work, we develop a thermodynamic consistent model, which employs a dissipative back-stress tensor for molecular orientation. With increasing temperature, a stronger relaxation occurs, resulting in less molecular orientation and hardening response. A numerical scheme is also constructed to determine the model parameters. Comparison with experiments shows that the model is able to reproduce all the main features of the stress response at various strain rates spanning the glass transition region. The model can also accurately capture the strain hardening response of polymers predeformed to a strain of 30% or 60% at various temperatures and rates.

Abstract:Polyacetylene and polyaniline usually have one-dimensional character because their interchain coupling interaction is weak.As the pressure increases,the interaction also increases and interchain energy gap reduces so that interchain distance b decreases and interchain elastic distance increases.When b approaches the lattice constant a,the polymer of one-dimensional chains becomes a two-dimensional compound lattice structure after considering their interchain coupling action,and new physical properties may arise. In this paper,the second-nearest-neighbor interactions between lattice chains of polyacetylene and polyaniline are considered,and the two-dimensional compound lattice model is adopted.Using the method of lattice dynamics,the dispersion curves of these polymers under different mass ratio are calculated and three kinds of lattice chain interactions are also investigated.The changes of spectra in high symmetric curves under BZ are discussed.We also plot the curve under the various mass ratios.The results show that the two-dimensional compound lattice polymer has two acoustic branches and two optical branches,and the increase of interchain coupling interaction can destroy the effects of aberration of dimerization,and cause the dimensional effect.If interchain coupling interaction is weak and vibration of interchain direction can be neglected,the polymer becomes one-dimensional chain and has only an optical branch and an acoustic branch.

Abstract:In order to provide nw experimetnal facts required for constructing a nonlinear constitutive equationfor solid polymers, some tests wee conducted on amorphous pojymers of polycarbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate) and for a crystalline polymer of polyxymethylene under varous strain paths such as comprssion, torsion and combined tension‐torsion. It is shown that (1) the stress‐strain behavior for the strain paths without strain reversal is described well not only for amorphous polymers, but also for crystalline polymers by an overstess theory proposed by Krempl, and (2) at the strain paths wth stran reversal, the stress responses are considerably differetn from what is expected for the fstress responses of metals and their alloys.

Molecular Orientations and True Stress−Strain Relationship in Isotactic Polypropylene Film

Abstract:The microscopic infrared dichroism measurement is made on a quenched iPP thin film during the stepwise elongation to obtain the molecular orientation functions, f(am), and f(c), in the amorphous and the crystalline phases, respectively. Results reveal that the pseudo-affine deformation of the amorphous phase occurs for f(am) < 0.45 with f(c) = 1.85 f(am), and concurrent structure alternation of a small portion of crystallites is evidenced from a limited change in the degree of crystallinity V-c. The true stress-strain relationship on the mesoscale is discussed on the basis of an interpenetrating network model, in which thin threadlike strands composed of crystallites firmly connected through intercrystalline links (C network) penetrate through an elastic network composed of amorphous chains interconnected to each other with lamellae at cross-linking sites (CEAM network). Combining the Matsuoka viscoelastic constitutive equation and the Takayanagi model for the C network below and above the yielding point, respectively, and the affine deformation equation for the CEAM network, we are allowed to give a straightforward description of the local deformation upon necking.
Modeling the Rate-Dependent Ductile-Brittle Transition in Amorphous Polymers

Abstract:The stress response of amorphous polymers in the glass transition region shows apparent temperature and rate dependence. With increasing loading rate, amorphous polymers also exhibit a clear ductile-brittle transition of tensile failure. The rate-dependent behaviors originate from intrinsic relaxations, ranging from perturbation of molecular bonds between polymer segments to reptation of polymer chains. In this work, we develop a constitutive model that incorporates segmental and chain dynamics into the deformation of bond and polymer networks, respectively. The dynamic scission of polymer chains is also incorporated into the theoretical framework to describe the damage evolution and ultimate failure of polymers. A comparison between theoretical predictions and experiments shows that the present model is able to simultaneously capture the observed rate-dependent features, including the transition from glassy state to rubbery state, strain hardening, and failure threshold.
Craze Density Based Fatigue-Damage Analysis in Polyethylene Methacrylate

Abstract:The S-N curve, also known as the Wöhler curve, is well acknowledged and widely used in the prediction of fatigue life of engineering materials. In this study, we present a craze density model, as an alternative approach, to predict the fatigue life of polymer material-polyethylene methacrylate (PMMA). Our experiments show that craze grows rapidly with the increase of fatigue loadings after their initiation on the surface of PMMA till to the failure of specimens. Dynamic measurements indicate that the growth rate of craze density reaches a stable stage after a rapid accumulation at the beginning, and dominates the fatigue life of PMMA. Both initiation time of crazing and deformation energy of PMMA are probed through the recorded fatigue stress-strain curves and the optical microscope (OM) observations on crazing evolutions. The critical growth rate of the craze density is correlated with the yield stress and strain of PMMA at quasi-static loadings. On the basis of the craze density, an experimental model is established to predict the fatigue damage and life of PMMA. The predication shows good agreement with that from both experiments and traditional S-N curves in a broad range of fatigue loadings.

Abstract:Molecular orientations of the crystalline and the amorphous phases are studied in relation to morphology using all instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area and macroscopic stress of isotactic polypropylene (W) thin film uniaxially stretched at a constant strain rate at room temperature. The morphology imposes important influences oil profiles of MicIR dichroism as a function of stretching, time and also on a relationship between the orientation functions, f(c) and f(am), of the crystalline and the amorphous phases. Linear relationships between f(c) and f(am) are found for the local areas without giant spherulite inclusions when f(am) <0.3 similar to 0.4, suggesting the harmonious developments of amorphous chain deformation and lamellar ant orientation during the necking propagation. The proportionality constant between and f(c) and f(am) is not universal but is strongly dependent on the morphology of the surrounding area where the local area under examination is located. The linear relationship between f(c) and f(am) is completely invalidated for describing the relationship between the amorphous chain deformation and the lamellar orientation inside the spherulites, which reveals that the deformation mechanism in the spherulite is different from that in the microcrystalline region.
Strain Hardening Behaviors and Mechanisms of Polyurethane under Various Strain Rate Loading

Abstract:The uniaxial tension experiments are performed on thermoplastic polyurethane to investigate its mechanical behaviors and related potential mechanisms, and the loading strain rate is designing to be wide ranging from 0.0001 to 1 s(-1). It is found that the polyurethane presents an obvious rate-dependence, and the stress strain curves share distinct strain hardening characteristics under the investigated strain rates. Furthermore, the strain hardening ratios are sharing nearly same trends and appear to be influenced by both strain rate and the induced adiabatic heating. Besides, the ratio is also strain-dependent on previous loading history. Then, a two-dimension unit cell model is built to investigate potential equivalent mechanisms, of which the hard phase as inclusion is equivalent with crystallization zone, crosslinking sites, and so forth. The simulation results facilitate to explain the distinct strain hardening ratios, even for the matrix from the extrapolated curves under super-low strain rate loading. Finally, the analogic mechanisms of equivalent hard inclusions are proposed, which can reasonably explain the strain rate- and strain-dependence characteristics of polyurethane mechanical behaviors.

Abstract:In this work, a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive relation was implemented to describe the mechanical behavior of a transparent thermoplastic polymer polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The quasi-static and dynamic response of the polymer was studied under different temperatures and strain rates. The effect of temperature was incorporated in elastic and relaxation constants of the constitutive equation. The incremental form of constitutive model was developed by using Poila–Kirchhoff stress and Green strain tensors theory. The model was implemented numerically by establishing a user defined material subroutine in explicit finite element (FE) solver LS-DYNA. Finite element models for uniaxial quasi-static compressive test and high strain rate split Hopkinson pressure bar compression test were built to verify the accuracy of material subroutine. Numerical results were validated with experimental stress strain curves and the results showed that the model successfully predicted the mechanical behavior of PMMA at different temperatures for low and high strain rates. The material model was further engaged to ascertain the dynamic behavior of PMMA based aircraft windshield structure against bird impact. A good agreement between experimental and FE results showed that the suggested model can successfully be employed to assess the mechanical response of polymeric structures at different temperature and loading rates.

Abstract:Tensile creep tests, tensile relaxation tests and a tensile test with a constant rate of strain are performed on injection-molded isotactic polypropylene at room temperature in the vicinity of the yield point. A constitutive model is derived for the time-dependent behavior of semi-crystalline polymers. A polymer is treated as an equivalent network of chains bridged by permanent junctions. The network is modelled as an ensemble of passive meso-regions (with affine nodes) and active meso-domains (where junctions slip with respect to their positions in the bulk medium with various rates). The distribution of activation energies for sliding in active meso-regions is described by a random energy model. Adjustable parameters in the stress--strain relations are found by fitting experimental data. It is demonstrated that the concentration of active meso-domains monotonically grows with strain, whereas the average potential energy for sliding of junctions and the standard deviation of activation energies suffer substantial drops at the yield point. With reference to the concept of dual population of crystalline lamellae, these changes in material parameters are attributed to transition from breakage of subsidiary (thin) lamellae in the sub-yield region to fragmentation of primary (thick) lamellae in the post-yield region of deformation.
Structure/property relationship of semi-crystalline polymer during tensile deformation: A molecular dynamics approach

Abstract:A coarse-grained molecular dynamics model of linear polyethylene-like polymer chain system was built to investigate the responds of structure and mechanical properties during uniaxial deformation. The influence of chain length, temperature, and strain rate were studied. The molecular dynamic tests showed that yielding may governed by different mechanisms at temperatures above and below Tg. Melt-recrystallization was observed at higher temperature, and destruction of crystal structures was observed at lower temperatures beyond yield point. While the higher temperature and lower strain rate have similar effects on mechanical properties. The correlated influences of time and temperature in the microscopic structures are more complicated. The evolution of microscopic characteristics such as the orientation parameter, the bond length, and the content of trans-trans conformation were calculated from the simulation. The results showed that the temperature have double effects on polymer chains. Higher temperature on one hand makes the chains more flexible, while on the other hand shortens the relaxation time of polymers. It is the interaction of these two aspects that determine the orientation parameter. During deformation, the trans conformation has experienced a rising process after the first drop process. And these microscopic structure parameters exhibit critical transaction, which are closely related to the yield point. A hypothetical model was thus proposed to describe the micro-structure and property relations based the investigations of this study.

Effect of Multiaxial Tensile Deformation on the Mechanical Properties of Semiflexible Polymeric Samples

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation is used to investigate the mechanical properties of the semiflexible polymer during multiaxial tensile deformations. The multiaxial tensile deformations can be imposed in totally or partially constrained modes. These types of deformations may be observed during the sudden deformation of polymeric material in the areas of aerospace, automobile, defense applications, etc. It is found that the constrained multiaxial deformation leads to the formation of nanovoids into the polymer sample. The high Young's modulus and yield strength for the totally constrained modes of tensile deformation are due to the energy required to create voids. The variation in von Misses stress, void volume, and bond order parameter with strain indicates the occurrence of brittle fracture during totally constrained tensile deformations. The partially constrained tensile deformations lead to the improvement in bond order parameter and lesser creation of nanovoids within the system. The system shows the characteristic strain hardening before failures.

Abstract:We developed a linear combination of two Flory's melting-point theories, one for stretched and the other for solution polymers, to predict the melting point of stretched solution polymers. The dependences of the melting strains on varying temperatures, polymer volume fractions, and solvent qualities were verified by the onset strains of crystallization in our dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of stretched solution polymers under a constant strain rate. In addition, owing to phase separation before crystallization in a poor solvent, calibration of polymer concentration to the polymer-rich phase appears necessary for the verification. Our results set up a preliminary thermodynamic background for the investigation of the multicomponent effect on strain-induced crystallization of polymers in rubbers and gels as well as on shear-induced crystallization of polymers in solutions and blends.

Abstract:This paper aims to characterize and model the mechanical behavior of partially crystalline Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone with an emphasis on temperature softening, strain softening, and strain hardening behavior. Uniaxial tension and planar tension tests, with a designed testing apparatus, were conducted with strain rates from 0.0001 s−1 to 0.1 s−1 and temperatures from 25 °C to 160 °C. A modified Oxford-Glass-Rubber constitutive model is proposed with a modified Eyring dashpot to capture the strain softening behavior and a plateau stress dependent hyperelastic spring to capture the strain hardening behavior. The model shows good capability in predicting stress strain curves at small and large deformation with an average fitting coefficient R2 of 0.93. Further application of the model into finite element simulation in more extreme conditions would be appropriate.

Abstract:Understanding of how surface properties could change upon deformation is of paramount importance for controlling adhesion, friction, and lubrication of soft polymeric materials (i.e., networks and gels). Here, we use a combination of the theoretical calculations and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study surface stress dependence on deformation in films made of soft and rigid polymeric networks. Simulations have shown that films of polymeric networks could demonstrate surface properties of both polymer melts and elastic solids depending on their deformation. In particular, at small film deformations the film surface stress ϒ is equal to the surface tension obtained at zero film strains, γ0, and surface properties of networks are similar to those of polymer melts. The surface stress begins to show a strain dependence when the film deformation ratio λ approaches its maximum possible value λmax corresponding to fully stretched network strands without bond deformations. In the entire film deformation range the normalized surface stress ϒ(λ)/γ0 is a universal function of the ratio λ/λmax. Analysis of the simulation data at large film deformations points out that the significant increase in the surface stress can be ascribed to the onset of the bond deformation. In this deformation regime network films behave as elastic solids.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Strain localization is a ubiquitous phenomenon of soft matters subjected to strain. Polymeric materials are a very important class of soft materials and widely used nowadays. Polymers have unique strain localization behavior such as crazing during tensile deformation. How to understand the mechanism at the molecular level of strain localization in polymeric materials has become an important topic in material science. In this work, tensile deformation process of polymers both under a melt state and a glassy state are investigated in MD simulations using a generic coarse-grained model. We use a machine learning technique, i.e., support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, to understand the local molecular structure and the dynamical properties during tensile deformation. By defining “softness” from the SVM model, we investigate the stress–strain behavior of both ductile polymer above glass transition temperature and brittle polymer glass during tensile deformation. We demonstrated that the softness can be used to predict physical properties efficiently; the softness provides deep physical insights into the non-equilibrium stress–strain process. We also find that the Hookean behavior of polymer glasses is mostly contributed by the hard regions of the system, and the elastic limit is quantitatively discussed as well.
Effect of Triaxial Stress Constraint on the Deformation and Fracture of Polymers

Abstract:One purpose of this paper is to give a brief overview on the research status of deformation, fracture and toughening mechanisms of polymers, including experimental, theoretical and numerical studies. Emphasis is on the more recent progresses of micromechanics of rubber particle cavitation and crazing, and the development of fracture criteria for ductile polymers. The other purpose is to study the effect of triaxial stress constraint on the deformation and fracture behavior of polymers. Polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene (ABS) and PC/ABS alloy are considered in this investigation. A series of circumferentially blunt-notched bars are used to experimentally generate different triaxial stress fields. The fracture surfaces of specimens with different notch radius are examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study the fracture and toughening mechanisms of polymer alloy. It is shown that the triaxial stress constraint has a significant effect on the deformation, fracture and toughening of PC, ABS and PC/ABS alloy. We will also discuss the extent to which a micromechanics criterion proposed by the first author can serve as a fracture criterion for ductile polymers. A new ductile fracture parameter is emphasized, which can be employed to evaluate the fracture ductility of polymers. Stress state independence of the parameter for the PC, ABS and PC/ABS alloy has been experimentally verified.

Abstract:The authors report that during tensile stress relaxation test of a polyurethane crosslinked by catechol-iron coordination bonds, the stress gradually increases with time after the initial drop, which differs from the documented behaviors of other materials. Based on model experiment and structural characterization, water triggered rapid increase of dynamic crosslinkages accompanied by Poisson’s contraction is found to be responsible for the stress intensification effect. In addition, the influential factors are carefully discussed. The findings might help to develop novel polymeric materials with improved application performance under loading conditions.

Abstract:The intensive applications of polymer in many engineering composites have imposed an urgent need on the understanding of the mechanical behavior and deformation mechanism of the polymer under cyclic loading. This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the behavior of amorphous polyethylene (PE) subjected to cyclic tensile and compressive loads using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, based on a united-atom approach. The effects of polymer chain length, the number of chains and strain rates are studied at first. Hysteresis loops, as well as visco-elastoplastic of PE under cyclic loading predicted by MD simulations are qualitatively in agreement with previous experiments. Three distinct hysteresis loops observed in successive loading-unloading reveal the contribution of elasticity, viscosity and plasticity under different loading strains, respectively. The rubber-like recovery behavior of PE at low temperature is attributed to that the mobility of molecular chains is constrained at low temperature. Energy analysis shows that the van der Waals energy and dihedral angle energy are considered to be the primary factors that affects the cyclic behavior of PE.

Abstract:The structural properties of a linear polymer and its evolution in time have a strong bearing on its anisotropic stress response. The mean-square bond length and mean bond angle are the critical parameters that influence the time-varying stress developed in the polymer. The bond length distribution along the chain is uniform without any abrupt changes at the ends. Among the externally set parameters such as density, temperature, strain rate, and chain length, the density as well as the chain length of the polymer have a significant effect on the stress. At high density values, changes in mean-square bond length dominates over changes in radius of gyration and end-to-end length. In other words, bond deformations dominate as opposed to changes in size and shape. Also, there is a large change in the mean-square bond length that is reflected as a jump in the stress. Beyond a particular value of the chain length, $n = 50$, called the entanglement length, stress-response is found to have distinctly different behavior which we attribute to the entanglement effects. Short chain polymers more or less behave like rigid molecules. There is no significant change in their internal structure when loaded. Further, temperature and rate of loading have a very mild effect on the stress. Besides these new results, we can now explain well known polymeric mechanical behavior under dynamic loading from the point of view of the evolution of the molecular dynamics and the derived structural properties. This could possibly lead to polymer synthesis with desired mechanical behavior.
