Abstract:In the paper we describe a completely new type of diode-pumped solid-state ring traveling-wave laser with two mirrors. Compared with traditional single-frequency laser, mode-locked laser and high power laser, this kind of novel ring traveling-wave lasers is more compact, reliable and affordable.

Abstract:A completely new type of solid-state round travelling-wave laser was presented. The resonator consists of only two concave mirrors and one of them is coated on the curved surface of the laser material. Between the mirrors the laser beam travelled in a closed 3-dimensional loop.Oscillations of many kinds of round travelling-wave laser modes have been observed , and lasers pumped at two defferent points on the active material have been developed. The experimental results indicates that the novel laser has most simple structure and very stable output. Using this design, high-efficient laser, single-frequency laser and mode-locked laser with short cavity length can be developed.

Abstract:A new type nonplanar ring laser,which consists of only two spherical mirrors,was presented and analyzed.One of the mirrors is coated on the curved surface of the laser crystal,so a more compact cavity is formed.The laser beam is reflected several times on the same cavity mirror in a round trip to provide the possibility to be multi-end-pumped,which can significantly reduce the thermal effect for a given total pumping power.The modes of the nonplanar ring laser were given and the mirror separations of different modes were calculated and the beam paths were simulated.Operations of different modes were performed and the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model.

Abstract:The design, fabrication and characterization of the dispersive multilayers are presented in this paper. Two kinds of dispersive mirror (High dispersion and 700-900nm Gires-Tournois mirrors) are designed by employing Particle Swarm Optimization method which demonstrates fast convergence speed and less dependence on the initial parameters. The mirrors are experimentally fabricated by home-made dual ion beam sputtering system with stable deposition rate and high density. A white light interferometry is built for precisely measuring the dispersion properties. A novel wavelet-based differentiation approach is introduced with considerable resistance to measurement error. The good agreement between the measured and designed results verifies the accuracy of both the fabrication and characterization method. Finally, two applications of Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser and Ti:Sapphire crystal oscillation cavity, which use our fabricated mirrors for dispersion compensation, are presented. Good output characteristics of both the two ultrafast laser systems are obtained.

Abstract:A multi-end-pumped two-mirrors nonplanar ring laser with output on single point was demonstrated.The beam propagated along a nonplanar loop within the cavity consisting of two mirrors,one of which was coated on the curved surface of the laser crystal.The laser provides the capability in being easily multi-end-pumped to reduce thermal induced effects and scale output power.Two important parameters of beam loops were described,and simulation diagrams of the beam loops were shown.Using the output coupler with the fan-shaped distribution of reflectivity,the output on single point was achieved.Double-end-pumped operations of different modes with output on single point were performed and the experimental results were given.

Abstract:According to the requirements for design and manufacture, we choose double-chirped method for designing the initial structure of the chirped coatings, and analyze the dependencs of reflectivity and group delay dispersion on the parameters of coatings such as the double-chirped modulation factor and the the proportion of double-chirped layers on the total thin film stack. Further more, we establish their optimal values. Based on the analysis, a chirped mirror pair, whose reflectivity is more than 99.5% and average group delay dispersion is -40 fs(2) with a residual ripple of less than +/- 20 fs(2) in a wavelength range of 600 nm-1050 nm, is demonstrated, which is to be used in the Ti: Sapphire femtosecond laser system for dispersion compensation.

Abstract:To improve the environmental stability and self-starting ability, researchers have developed the nonlinear optical-loop mirror and nonlinear amplifying-loop mirror (NALM) mode-locking technologies. The developing process of these technologies can be summarized as the following three phases: non-polarization-maintaining (PM) structures with polarization controllers, PM figure-of-8 cavity structures with dual-gain, and PM figure-of-9 cavity structures with a phase shifter. Among these, the newly invented figure-of-9 NALM mode-locked fiber laser is particularly advantageous owing to its easy self-starting ability, long-term stability, concise structure, and cost-effectiveness. Such a mode-locked fiber laser is increasingly employed in applications such as optical frequency combs, generation of THz radiation, and advanced material micromachining.

Abstract:The experimental research on diode-pumped solid-state ring laser (DPSSL) is reported in this paper. The research target is to develop a new style optical gyroscope. The ring cavity is a plane, 8-shape 4-mirror laser resonator. Nd:YVO4 crystal is exploited as a laser media which is longitudinally pumped by a 2w laser diode. An optical delay path attached to the cavity is composed of a beam splitter and a prism. The bidirectional traveling waves partly output from one of the flat mirror and one directional beam interferes with the other on a photo detector with optical delay. The resonator design is discussed; the pump power threshold is about 600mW. We obtain the bidirectional continuous TEM00 mode outputs and their interfering pattern. In the experiment, Sagnac effect is watched, which indicates that the DPSSRL can be used as optical gyroscope.

Abstract:A novel multi-end-pumped nonplanar ring Nd:YAG laser with two-mirror cavity, was demonstrated. A model was developed for attaining all beam loop modes of the laser cavity and calculating the mirror separation of each mode. With single-diode laser pumping, the operations of different modes at 1.064 mu m were performed and the experimental results are in excellent agreement with the model. Using three laser diodes as the pumping sources led to over threefold increase in output power.

Abstract:A new non-planar multi-pass laser amplifier based on the two-mirror ring optical path is proposed. It has the advantages of simple structure, small size, good space symmetry, easily adjustable and more amplification times. In the cavity of the amplifier, the signal beam goes through the laser medium many times for amplification along the three-dimensional non-planar symmetric path, and the high-power amplified laser can be obtained in a small-size laser medium. Theoretical modeling and parametric analysis of the optical path in the cavity of the amplifier are done. Simulation graphs for a portion of modes of optical path are given, optical loss and power amplification are also analyzed. A basic design of a solid-state non-planar multi-pass thin-disk laser amplifier based on Yb:YAG thin disk and laser diode (LD) end-pumping is given for high-power laser amplification.

Abstract:A multi-end-pumped nonplanar ring laser with a two-mirror resonator has been demonstrated. Two important parameters of the beam loops are described, and simulation diagrams of the beam loops are shown. Using an output coupler with a fan-shaped distribution in reflectivity, multi-end-pumped operation with the output beam from a single point has been achieved, and the experimental results show that the laser could be multi-end-pumped to reduce thermal effects and multiply the fracture limit of the laser crystal.

Abstract:This paper reports an experimental research on the stability of bidirectional outputs and multi-longitudinal mode interference of laser diode end-pumped Nd:YVO4 solid-state ring laser (DPSSL). The bidirectional, multi-longitudinal and TEM00 mode continuous wave outputs are obtained and the output powers are measured and their stabilities are analyzed respectively. The spectral characteristic of the outputs is measured. The interfering pattern of the bidirectional longitudinal mode outputs is obtained and analyzed in the condition of the ring cavity with rotation velocity. The movement of the interfering fringe of the multi-longitudinal modes is very sensitive to the deformation of the setup base and the fluctuation of the intracavity air, but is stationary or randomly dithers when the stage is rotating.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a passively mode-locked Nd∶Y3Sc2Al3O12 (Nd:YSAG) laser using a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) superlattice. Nonlinear mirror mode locking based on PPLN intracavity frequency doubling was theoretically analyzed. The modulation depth of nonlinear reflectivity of the nonlinear mirror is approximately 8.8%. Optical performances of the modelocked laser including output power, radio frequency spectrum, and optical spectrum were experimentally investigated. An average output power of 710 mW with a slope efficiency of 14.6% was obtained at the pump power of 6.5 W. The repetition rate is 101.7 MHz, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the mode-locked pulse is 45 dB. The mode-locked pulse width was approximately 9 ps.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate a nonlinear-mirror (NLM) mode-locked diode-pumped solid-state Nd.YVO4 laser operating at 1342nm, in which the NLM comprises a periodically poled LiNbO3 crystal and a dichroic mirror. The self-starting threshold for cw mode locking is 1.5W, which is significantly lower than that of saturable absorber mode locking. An average power of 1.52W at 1342nm is obtained under diode pump power of 10W at 808nm, with the slope efficiency being up to 16.8%. The pulse width and the repetition rate of the mode-locked laser output are about 9.5 ps and 101 MHz, respectively. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The characteristic of solid-state laser is presented,which is used as optical gyro and is involved in experimental research on a 4-mirror 8-type cavity bidirectional solid-state ring laser pumped with a fiber-coupled laser diode.By inserting an F-P etalon with function of aperture in the ring cavity,single-longitudinal and TEM00 mode have been detected.Bidirectional cw solid-state ring laser has been operated and its output powers are measured.Its stability is 0.4% in 100 s sampling time.The linewidth of the single-frequency is about 4 kHz in 1.5 s sampling time when the output power is 0.2 mW.Results show that it is the principal characteristic that DPSSL has narrow linewidth for a solid-state cw ring laser used as an optical rotation sensor.Experimental results demonstrate that solid-state ring laser with a homogenous-broaden crystal as laser media can be operated in single-frequency,bidirectional outputs state.

Abstract:Diode pumped monolithic nonplanar ring laser has the advantages of compactness, reliability and high efficiency. When it is placed in a magnetic field, a unidirectional traveling wave can be obtained with a high power single-frequency output. 270 mW single-frequency TEM 00 output was obtained from a Nd:YAG monolithic nonplanar ring laser. The working principles of this kind of laser were discussed, and two kinds of new nonplanar ring cavities were proposed. Because of the similarity of the working principles, these kinds of nonplanar ring cavities are called the pan-triangle nonplanar unidirectional ring cavity.

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a thermally stable four-mirror discrete-component planar ring cavity for Q-switched laser output. An 880 nm fiber-coupled laser diode is used to pump a-cut Nd:YVO4 directly. A magnetic rotation glass (MR3-2) inserted into a permanent cylinder magnet, in combination with a half-wave plate and the polarized emission properties of Nd: YVO4, is used to obtain unidirectional laser operation. With this setup, for a pump power of 5 W, 2.75 W of continuous 1064 nm single-frequency laser output is obtained. Next, a Cr:YAG with small signal transmittance of 75% is inserted in between the two concave mirrors where the beam waist is located. Consequently, a passive Q-switching single-frequency linear polarization pulse with an average power of 1.02 W, pulse width of 60 ns, frequency of 21 kHz, peak power of 810 W, and single-pulse energy of 48 mu J is obtained. Further, we also propose a new method of using a Fabry-Perot (FP) scanning interferometer to observe high-repetition rate Q-switched pulse output longitudinal-mode signals. Abstract:The fundamental principle and preparing method of semiconductor saturable absorption mirrors (SESAMs) for passive mode-locking of solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers and fiber lasers are introduced. By using these mode-locking devices on solid state lasers and optically-pumped vertical external cavity surface semission semiconductor lasers, ultra-short pulses with repetition rate varying from several to hundreds of GHz have been obtained and the related methods are reviewed.

Abstract:Pico-second solid-state lasers with multi-watt average power and multi-kilowatt peak power are required for numerous applications such as UV generation and pumping of optical parametric oscillators for RGB laser TV display. In the past few years laser diode bars as pump source with continue output power of hundreds watts or more have become commercially available. LD side pumping YAG laser module can be used to generate high reputation mode locked output pulse with SESAM (Semiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror) as an end cavity mirror. In this paper, we demonstrate an all solid-state mode-locked YAG laser with three-mirror folded cavity with a SESAM mirror, 80MHz pulse rate, about 10ps pulse width, and 2W 1064 nn output power. Thermal effect of laser rod, and polarization of intra-cavity beam are considered in laser cavity design. The enhancement of laser performance and decreasing Q switching effect are discussed. Further investigation is greatly needed.
