Abstract:Based on the transit-time ultrasonic gas flowrate measurement principle and the model-fitting method, a model-based Time-of-Flight measurement method is proposed. A single acoustic path ultrasonic gas flow measurement system is developed and an empirical model of the ultrasonic detection signal is established. The least-squares curve fitting criterion and the modified steepest descent method are introduced to implement the optimal Time-of-Flight estimation. Static and dynamic experiments are carried out respectively in a pipe with the inner diameter of 100.0 mm. The preliminary experimental results verify the feasibility of the new model-based ultrasonic gas flow measurement method and show that the measurement performance of the gas flowrate measurement system is satisfactory.

Abstract:The double-threshold method has been widely used in ultrasonic flow measurement to determine time-of-flight (TOF) due to its low cost and ease of implementation. Performance of this method is negatively affected by the cycle-skip phenomenon which occurs frequently under inconstant working conditions, especially varied fluid temperature. This paper proposes a method to suppress the phenomenon to facilitate reliable determination of TOF in ultrasonic flow measurement. First, the double-threshold method is used to generate a feature point to segment the signal. Second, based on the correlation coefficient and signal power, judgement factors of individual signal periods are calculated to determine signal onset. Finally, a valid zero crossing which has a constant lag from the onset is selected to determine the TOF. Thus, the cycle-skip phenomenon is suppressed. Two additional modifications are proposed to eliminate the influence of varied signal frequency and low sampling rate. The proposed method was validated by an experiment based on an ultrasonic water flow sensor. Results showed that the frequently appearing cycle-skip phenomenon can be successfully suppressed by the proposed method.

Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeters (UFMs) based on the principle of transit time difference are widely used in process industries. The transit time difference is obtained through analyzing received acoustic signals generated by a couple of transducers located upstream and downstream respectively. The quality of received acoustic signal will directly affect the measurement accuracy of UFM. For this reason, a measurement-calculation coupled approach combining measurement tools and numerical simulation for calculating the acoustic signal of UFM is proposed in this paper. The method can predict the acoustic signals of UFM with different flowrates. First, important boundary condition (vibration velocity on transmitter transducer surface) is measured by measurement tool, which can reduce computational complexity and also avoid modeling transmitter transducers. Second, simulating the wave propagation (difficult to access experimentally) within moving medium by using the measured vibration velocity. Third, obtaining the transfer function of receiver by comparing estimated force acting on the receiver transducer surface with measured voltage signal from receiver, which can avoid modeling receiver transducer. Finally, predicting the received acoustic signal at different flowrates by using the transfer function. The rationality of predicted data was validated by comparing experimental and predicted acoustic signal on receiver transducer at different flowrates. A good agreement between simulated and experimental data was obtained, which means that the working processes of the acoustic signal generated by actual transducers inside UFMs can be accurately predicted based on this method. Analysis of the predicted results will provide good guides and advices to the design of UFMs involving actual application.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of short propagation path and difficulties in measuring the transit-time when a traditional Z ultrasonic flowmeter is used for small caliber measurement,a new ultrasonic flowmeter is designed.Propagation path is extended and the attenuation of ultrasonic intensity is reduced by altering the transducer's installation.The high-precision flowmeter control system is designed by using FPGA as the main-controller and high accuracy timer as the time interval measurement controller.The experiments of constant speed test,alternate flow rate test and gross flow rate test to ultrasonic flowmeter are implemented.The measure accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeter is about 0.5%.

Abstract:Featured ApplicationThe research results of this paper could be used to improve the measuring accuracy of the transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter.Ultrasonic wave carries the information for flowing velocity when it is propagating in flowing fluids. Flowrate can be obtained by measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic wave. The principle of transit-time ultrasonic flowmeters used today was based on that the velocity is uniform along the propagation path of the ultrasonic wave. However, it is well known that the velocity profiles in a pipe are not uniform both in laminar flow and turbulent flow. Emphasis on the effects of velocity profiles across the pipe on the propagation time of ultrasonic wave, theoretical flowrate correction factors considering the real velocity profile were proposed for laminar and turbulent flow to obtain higher accuracy. Experiment data of ultrasonic flowmeter and weighting method are compared to verify the proposed theoretical correction factors. The average relative error of proposed correction factor is determined to be 0.976% for laminar flow and 0.25% for turbulent flow.

Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeters play an important role in industrial production, aerospace and other fields. In this paper, a high-precision ultrasonic flowmeter based on the cross-correlation method is designed, and the commercial finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.6 is used to simulate the propagation process of ultrasonic waves during flow measurement, and the implementation process of the cross-correlation algorithm is simulated by Python language. The flowmeter adopts the cross-correlation algorithm to improve the measurement accuracy of ultrasonic time of flight and adopts the method of combining FPGA and an embedded microprocessor to improve operation efficiency. In order to verify the performance of the flowmeter, we tested the flowmeter on the National Institute of Metrology and the self-built test platform, using the still water dragging method, the dynamic volume method and the field comparison method, respectively. The results show that the flowmeter has the ability to test the flow under the condition of high flow velocity (26 m/s) and a pipe diameter in the range of DN6~DN1600, that the absolute value of the relative indication error does not exceed 0.815% and that the repeatability does not exceed 0.150%. The designed ultrasonic flowmeter has high measurement accuracy, good repeatability, strong stability and a wide application range.

Abstract:High-precision measurement of liquid flow using transit time method requires accurate measurements of the absolute propagation time and the relative propagation time. The reference signal for the measurement of the absolute propagation time in ultrasonic flow measurement is rather difficult to get. Aiming at this problem, an extraction method of the reference signal is presented. The boundary conditions for energy and phase are set to ensure the accuracy of the extracted reference signal, which can adaptively adjust the fundamental signals according to the actual velocity distribution interval. The sampling rate and peak detector factors that influence the precision of the relative time difference are further studied with simulation analysis; An experimental system is designed and the proposed method and the simulation analysis are verified on a hydraulic platform. The results prove the effectiveness of the method and the correctness of the simulation analysis.

Abstract:In order to realize high-precision and real-time flow measurement, in this paper according to the measurement principle of ultrasonic transit time method, a low-power microprocessor MSP430 is used as the core of this system, and a high-precision measurement chip TDC-GP2 is specially adopted to collect the time difference signals in real time, hereby we design a new ultrasonic transit time flow-meter. On the basis of advanced hardware design above, to further improve the accuracy of flow measurement, a digital signal processing algorithm based on wavelet transform is adopted to de-noise the measured signals, which is rapidly realized in DSP chip. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the measurement accuracy and real time performance, and meet the measurement requirements of flow-meter.

Abstract:To address the issue of timing errors caused by attenuation and jitter in the echo signal with the conventional threshold method, this paper presents a signal processing method for ultrasonic gas flow meters based on the mathematical characteristics of transit time. First, an improved weighted recursive filtering algorithm based on the mathematical characteristics of transit time is proposed. Then,based on the aforementioned filtering algorithm, a feedback-type threshold adjustment method has been proposed. Finally, the results for the flow meter meeting the performance criteria for a Class 1 accuracy ultrasonic gas flow meter at range of 2 similar to 300 m(3)/h. This signal processing technique can be implemented at comparatively low cost on existing conventional fixed-threshold flow measurement infrastructures, with the potential to significantly improve accuracy and reliability.

Abstract:In general, two major factors effect oil the measurement precision of ultrasonic transit-time gas flowmeter: the calculations of gas velocity distribution in the pipe and the measurements of the transit time of ultrasonic transmitting from one transducer to another. In this paper, considering the affect factors, a new design of ultrasonic gas flow meter is proposed, which is operated by a master slave control based on a single board computer and a MCU. In order to calculate the velocity distribution in the whole pipe, the multi-tracks (5 tracks) are used to measure the transit times of ultrasonic waves between each pair of the corresponding transducers located at five different profiles of the pipe, by which the gas velocity near the pipe wall can be described more accurately, especially at a low gas velocity. Meanwhile, the ultrasonic beam deflection altered with the change of the gas velocity is modified by software in order to improve the accuracy of time interval. In addition, the peak value transmission circuit is employed to optimize the self-adaptive ability of the system, which can also raise the SNR and reduce the measurement error resulting from the ultrasonic beam deflection. At last, this work proposed a new algorithm for flow calculation based oil the improvements mentioned above. These results show that the method has better accuracy, rangeability, stability and repeatability compared to traditional ones.
Ultrasonic micro-flow measurement based on improved phase-difference method

Abstract:To solve the precision measurement problem in micro flow condition of the conventional ultrasonic flow measurement method,an improved phase-difference method based on the combination of counter and sampling integration techniques is proposed.First,an electronic counter with high stability is adopted to realize the coarse measurement for whole cycle phase.And then the accurate measurement of sub-phase is achieved by using sampling integration technique which can greatly restrain the measurement error caused by jitter.At the same time,the dead zone of the phase detector can be eliminated by the phase shift control method.The simulation and experimental results show that under the condition of DN20 pipeline,normal temperature and pure water,the maximal relative error of micro flow measurement is less than 1%,while for medium and large flow measurements,the errors are both less than 0.5%,and the standard deviation is 86cm3/h at 0.02 m3/h flow point.The improved phase-difference method can achieve higher accuracy and lower limit than the conventional time-difference method.It is in favour of improving the ultrasonic testing performance in small flow condition.

Abstract:This paper presents an optimized design method for an ultrasonic flow meter (USFM) used in the semiconductor manufacturing field for liquid flow measurement. Based on fluid simulation, the impact of different inlet tube section angles on the velocity distribution within the measuring tube section of the USFM was analyzed, and a suitable inlet tube section angle of 45° was determined. Based on the average flow velocity on the acoustic channel line and the average flow velocity in the measuring tube section, a velocity correction factor was calculated to adjust the measured flow velocity to the actual flow velocity of the tested fluid. The USFM prototype was calibrated for flow rate and a compensation factor obtained to correct measured flow rate. The accuracy of the USFM was tested and found to reach 1.5 level, meeting the needs for liquid flow measurement in the semiconductor manufacturing field.

Abstract:A new digital signal processor based single path ultrasonic gas flowmeter is designed, constructed, and experimentally tested. To achieve high accuracy measurements, an optimized ultrasound driven method of incorporation of the amplitude modulation and the phase modulation of the transmit-receive technique is used to stimulate the transmitter. Based on the regularities among the received envelope zero-crossings, different received signal's signal-to-noise ratio situations are discriminated and optional time-of-flight algorithms are applied to take flow rate calculations. Experimental results from the dry calibration indicate that the designed flowmeter prototype can meet the zero-flow verification test requirements of the American Gas Association Report No. 9. Furthermore, the results derived from the flow calibration prove that the proposed flowmeter prototype can measure flow rate accurately in the practical experiments, and the nominal accuracies after FWME adjustment are lower than 0.8% throughout the calibration range.

Abstract:Delta-T method ultrasonic flow meter measures the flow rate through the measurement of the value of the Delta-T,which was the ultrasonic flow meter transmission time difference of the downstream and upstream,so the measurement of the transmission time was the key of the system.In order to improve the accuracy of time measurement,TDC-GP2 high precision time measurement chip was chosen in this paper.This paper introduces the flow measurement principle of Delta-T ultrasonic flow meter based on the TDC-GP2 chip and the implementation of corresponding hardware measurement circuit.After the experiment,this method has high measuring precision and resolution ratio and was promising to be applied.

Abstract:Flow rate serves as a pivotal parameter in process control, holding significant importance across various domains. Ultrasonic flowmeters have garnered widespread attention due to their advantages, which include pressure-less measurement, absence of mechanical components, non-contact operation, high precision, and intelligent capabilities. The computation of Time of Flight (TOF) stands as a pivotal factor in the ultrasonic flowmeter's flow measurement using the time difference method, and its handling has remained a focal point of research. This paper initially outlines the measurement principles of the transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter. The DTCC algorithm is proposed for small-caliber clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters, coupled with Kalman filtering to enhance measurement repeatability. A flow measurement system was established and experiments were conducted on a DN10 horizontal pipeline. In comparison to the dual-threshold detection method, the DTCC algorithm reduced the average measurement error from ±9% to ±4%, and improved repeatability from 4.05% to 0.58%, with the best repeatability reaching 0.06%. It is indicated that the DTCC method not only reduced the average error but also significantly enhanced repeatability.

A Novel Mathematical Model for Transit-time Ultrasonic Flow Measurement

Abstract:The calculation of the averaged flow velocity along an ultrasonic path is the core step in ultrasonic transit-time flow measurement. The conventional model for calculating the path-averaged velocity does not consider the influence of the flow velocity on the propagation direction of the ultrasonic wave and can introduce error when the sound speed is not much greater than the flow velocity. To solve this problem, a new mathematical model covering the influence of the flow velocity is proposed. It has been found that the same mathematical expressions of the path-averaged flow velocity, as a function of the absolute time-of-flight (ToFs) of ultrasonic waves travelling upstream and downstream, can be derived based on either of the models. However, the expressions as a function of the time difference (the relative ToF) between the ultrasonic waves travelling upstream and downstream derived by the two models are completely different. Flow tests are conducted in a calibrated flow rig utilising air as flowing medium. Experimental results demonstrate that the path-averaged flow velocities, calculated using either the relative or the absolute ToFs based on the new model, are much more consistent and stable, whereas those calculated based on the conventional model have shown evident and increasing discrepancy when the flow velocity exceeds 15 m/s. When the flow velocity is around 39.45 m/s, the discrepancy is as high as 0.38 m/s. As the relative ToF can be more accurately, reliably and conveniently measured in real applications, the proposed mathematical model has a great potential for the increase of the accuracy of the ultrasonic transit-time flowmeters, especially for the applications such as the measurement of fluids with high flow velocities.
Implementation of High Precision Time Measuring Method of Travel Time Ultrasonic Flowmeter

Abstract:On the basis of analyzing the error of traditional time measuring method,a new high precision time measuring method was presented to improve the precision of time measuring of travel time ultrasonic flowmeter.Combining the theory of PLL with the technique of edge detecting,this new method made the spread time of ultrasonic just consist of integral units of timing pulse,which could minimize the phase error of timing pulse;meanwhile,implemented the circular measurement of spread time through logical programming,which could reduce the edge detecting error and system error.The result of simulation experiment shows that the method raises the precision of time measuring to ns level even sub-ns level and meets the demand of precision of time measuring in the small pipe diameter situation.The core function of this method has implemented on the FPGA chip of Xilinx XC2S100e.

Abstract:Transit-time multipath ultrasonic flow meters (TM-UFMs) have been widely employed for measuring flowrate of gas and liquid. However, its applicability is still dragged by the difficulties to describe the physical model by precise mathematical expressions and to reduce the deviations led by the simplified principle models. Besides, fault-tolerance, including fault diagnosis and measure maintaining method, namely, rectification, is of great value in practical engineering, but there are few effective methods provided ever since to provide a solution for faulty UFMs. Therefore, data integration for TM-UFMs is one of the complications to obtain the accurate measurements, except for precise transit-time detection and improved transducers and circuits. This paper proposes a novel data integration method for TM-UFM calibration, as well as fault diagnosis and rectification based on particle swarm optimized support vector machines (PSO-SVM). Besides, extensive experiments have been conducted on a platform of TM-UFMs, and the results have illustrated the effectiveness of this method. The PSO-SVM-based models trained by the proposed method lead to a decrease of deviations to +/- 1% (full scale) in normal state for data integration, compared with +/- 2% deviations when a traditional method is adopted. When there exist one or two dysfunctional acoustic paths, the method diagnoses the faulty paths and maintains the measurement with deviations below +/- 2%.

Abstract:Ultrasonic gas flowmeters (UGFM) are extensively used in petroleum, chemical, natural gas and other fields because of their distinctive measurement advantages. As the core technology of the UGFM, digital signal processing technology determines its measurement accuracy and stability. This paper systematically reviews the signal processing methods for measuring the TOF (time of flight) based on the principle of time difference method. According to the stability of the feature information extracted by different digital signal processing methods, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed. Aiming at the problems of serious energy attenuation, weak echo signal amplitude, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when ultrasonic signal propagate in the gas, different signal processing methods are evaluated and compared from the aspects of calculation accuracy, response speed, anti-interference ability and sensitivity to parameter changes. Finally, some improvement ideas and directions for further research are proposed according to the analysis results.
