Abstract:Nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders(the grain size about 20nm) were prepared by the polyacrylamide gel method. After being dealed with coating by dipping in the solutions of KAI(SO4)(2) and Na2SiO3, nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders were covered by an composit oxide layer about 2nm. The obvious effects of coating process on the dispersity and appearance structure of nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders were found.

Abstract:Nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders with different grain sizes and Eu3+ concentrations were prepared by chemical process, and dealed with coating. It was found that the Eu3+ critical concentration of nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders was increased obviously, and it caused the luminescent intensity improved. In addition, because the hanging bonds on the surface of coating nano-scale Y2O3:Eu3+ powders were mostly vanished, the luminescent intensity was further enhanced.

Abstract:The YVO4:Eu3+ and YVO4:Eu3+ @Au nanoparticle (NPs) colloids were prepared by a wet chemistry method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV vis absorption spectra. The influence of particle concentration and Au coating on the photoluminescence properties of the colloids was studied in emphasis. It was interesting to observe that in the colloid phase the location of excitation bands induced by the energy transfer (ET) from the VO43- groups to Eu3+ gradually shifted to red with the concentration increase of YVO4:Eu3+ NPs, while the intensity of the bands demonstrated an optimum value and the luminescence decay dynamics gradually deviated from exponential functions owing to the strong interactions among YVO4:Eu3+ NPs. After coating with Au shells, the luminescence intensity for the ET excitation at 269 nm increased nearly two times, which was mainly attributed to the isolation effect among YVO4:Eu3+ NPs. This work is very helpful of understanding the photoluminescence properties of rare earth (RE) doped NPs in the colloids.

Abstract:Nano-scale powders of Y2O3:Eu3+ were obtained by homogeneous precipitation technique. In this process, the grain sizes (40–70 nm) of nanoscale powders of Y2O3:Eu3+ were controlled by changing the reaction time of homogeneous precipitation. While being excited by X-ray, the emission spectra of nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ and micro-Y2O3:Eu3+ were studied and compared. It was found that the blue-shift phenomenon exists in nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ emission spectra. Furthermore, the wave lengths of the emission spectra were related to the grain sizes of nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ powders. After being examined by XRD, it was found that the unit cell of nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ became smaller than that of micro-Y2O3:Eu3+.

Abstract:Adding nano-Y2O3 into the ZrO2 ceramic base powder body, the ceramic coatings were prepared by plasma spraying. The wear resistance of the coating were studied and the influence of nano-Y2O3 powder on the microstructure and high temperature oxidation resistance of the coating were investigated. The results show that the addition of nano-Y2O3 can reduce porosity in the coating and improve coating compactness. With the increase of nano-Y2O3, the antioxidant capacity weaken after strengthening. The coating adding nano-Y2O3 of 5% has the least pores, the finer grain, the better density and the best antioxidant properties.

Abstract:A composite coating containing nanosized ceramic powders was fabricated by a supersonic arc-spraying procedure using corresponding cored wires.The microstructure and high temperature erosion property of the coating were studied by characterizations with optical microscope,microhardness,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy,with special attentions paid to the effect of the subsequent annealing treatment.The results show that the skin and the cored powders melted and fused to form homogeneous solid solutions during the arc-spraying procedure using the cored wires.The achieved coating shows homogeneous hardness.The subsequent annealing of the coating reduced defects and residual stress,decomposed the metastable phases and at the same time improved the crystallinity of corresponding phases in the coating,which in turn improved its hardness.The high-temperature erosion resistance of the coatings after the subsequent annealing improved significantly.

Abstract:Nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ was prepared with the method of homogeneous precipitation. Controlling the conditions of the reaction, we obtained nano-scale powders with different grain sizes. Compared to ordinary powders of Y2O3:Eu3+, the XRD peaks of nano-Y2O3:Eu3+ become wide, and 29 increases. Also, it exits the blue-shift in the X-ray PLS of nano-Y2O3:Eu3+. The wave length and intensity of the peak(5Do ��7F2) arc connected with the grain size of the powders.

Abstract:Al2O3 powder was coated with Y2O3 percursor generated by in situ precipitation of Y(NO3)3·6H2O in aqueous solution. After calcining at high temperature, the precursor was completely transformed into a crystalline Y2O3, and Y2O3-coated Al2O3 powder was obtained. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), high resolution electron microscope (HREM) observation and elemental analysis clearly showed that the Y2O3 was successfully coated on the surface of the Al2O3 particles. The coated powders were also characterized by energy dispersive spectrum (EDAX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The wetting behaviour of molten aluminum on the coated Al2O3 powders was investigated by the sessile drop method. Due to the introduction of Y2O3, the wettability of the coated-Al2O3 powders by liquid aluminum was dramatically improved in comparison with that of the as-received powders.

Abstract:The process of coating Y2O3 and Y2O3∶Eu3+ nano-particles on the carbon nanotubes(CNTs) was studied.The products were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),transmission electron microscope(TEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD).Y2O3 and Y2O3∶Eu3+ nano-particles with diameter of about 10 nm can be deposited on the surface of CNTs by chemical coprecipitation method.The Y2O3∶Eu3+ nano-particles coated on the CNTs had a main excitation peak centered at 201 nm and a main emission peak centered at 620 nm.The luminescent spectra of them showed a notable blue shift in excitation spectra and a red shift in emission spectra compared with those of the normal Y2O3∶Eu3+ nano-particles fluorescent powder.

Abstract:Variable quantities of nanometer CeO2 were added into the ZrO2-Y2O3 ceramic base powder to make ceramic coating.The effects of nanometer CeO2 on the binding strength and corrosion resistance of the coating were studied.The result shows that the addition of nanometer CeO2 to the spray powder can modify the microstructure of the composite coating,and at the same time,reduce the porosity and improve the coating compactness.The wear-resistance and alkali-resistance to corrosion enhanced with the addition of nanometer CeO2,then weakened later on.The best result was attained about the grain refinement,dense coating,wearing-resistance and corrosion-resistance when adding the Nano-CeO2 to the coating by 3%.

Abstract:Crystalline Y2O3:Eu is of paramount significance in rare earth materials and research on luminescence spectra. In this work, the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu was coated with silica by a facile solid state reaction method at room temperature. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) photographs showed that the prepared Y2O3:Eu particle is polycrystalline with the size of 20nm, the size of silica-coated particle is about 25nm. The XPS spectra indicated that the silica layer is likely to interact with Y2O3:Eu by a Si–O–Y chemical bond. The luminescence spectra showed that the intensity of ground samples is lower than that of unground ones, the intensity of silica-coated phosphors is higher than that of the ground samples, while almost the same as that of the unground ones. Therefore, the silica coating decreases the surface defects of nanoparticles of the nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu, thus increasing their luminescent intensity.

Abstract:Gd2O3:Eu3+@Y2O3 core-shell structural luminescence nanomaterials were prepared by homogeneous precipitation method. XRD patterns show that the sample calcined at 800 degrees C is cubic phase Gd2O3, and the crystal grows well, after coated with Y2O3, the diffraction peak position of Gd2O3 is not changed, while with the increase of the coating thickness, cubic phase Y2O3 diffraction peaks appear. In FTIR spectra, it is observed that Gd-O, Y-O stretching vibration absorption peaks increase with decreasing the coating thickness, this reason is that when the coating thickness is suitable, the dangling bonds on the particle surface are less, which results in Gd(Eu,Y)-O bonds increase. SEM images indicate that the samples before and after coated are all in sphere shape. XPS analysis further proves that the Y2O3 is coated on the surface of Gd2O3:Eu3+. Photoluminescence properties show that coating the Y2O3 host with different thickness on the surface of Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles, the Eu3+ characteristic red emission can be observed. And when the coating thickness is suitable, that is Gd2O3:Eu3+/Y2O3 ratio of R=4 : 1, the luminescence intensities of core-shell particles are higher than that of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ core nanocrystals, it is thought that the core-shell samples decrease the negative effects of nanoparticles on the luminescence properties.

Abstract:(MnCo)3-xYxO4 spinel coatings were prepared on AISI430 alloy by electrodepositing and sintering incompletely crystallized precursor powders. Yttrium significantly refined the grain of (MnCo)3O4 coatings and improved the high temperature oxidation resistance of the coating. The mass gain of (MnCo)2.85Y0.15O4 coatings was 0.53 mg·cm−2 as oxidized at 800 °C for 200 h, being only 26.0 % of that of AISI 430 and 56.4 % of that of (MnCo)3O4 coating. The Y content of (MnCo)3-xYxO4 coatings affected the crack formation on the coating surface in high temperature oxidation process. Doping of 0.1 at.% Y caused severe lattice distortion and enhanced internal stress, resulting in the nucleation and growth of cracks. However Y2O3 was formed along grain boundaries for 0.15 at.% Y, which released the internal stress and improved the bonding force. The failure behavior of the coating was revealed by establishing the relationship between the number of failure units and the internal stress of the coating. (MnCo)2.95Y0.05O4 coating exhibited a stable performance due to the minimum value and increase of ASR in high-temperature oxidation.

Abstract:In this study, Ni-W nanocrystalline alloy coatings incorporated with different amounts of Y2O3 nanoparticles (0-20 g/L in the electrolyte) were successfully synthesized via direct current electrodeposition method at an applied current density of 2 A/dm(2). The microstructure, morphology, chemical composition, micmhardness and electrochemical performance of the deposited coatings were comprehensively investigated to unveil the fundamental effects of the Y2O3 addition. Results indicate that Y2O3 nanoparticles were uniformly incorporated in the composite coatings. The incorporated Y2O3 nanoparticles contributed to a compact and smooth coating surface. The microstructures of the deposited coatings that determined from the broadening of X-ray diffraction peaks proved that the addition of nanoparticle resulted in microstructure refinements, and the composite coating deposited from an electrolyte containing 10 g/L Y2O3 nanoparticles showed the smallest crystallite size 15.5 nm and the largest microstrain 0.59%. The micmhardness increased from 533 to 789 HV as the concentration of Y2O3 particles in the electrolyte increased from 0 to 20 g/L. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance of the composite coatings improved due to the incorporation of Y2O3 nanoparticles and the composite coating electro-deposited from an electrolyte containing 10 g/L Y2O3 nanoparticles exhibited the highest anti-corrosion performance.

Abstract:4 mol.% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) doped with various quantities of Gd2O3 (G-YSZ) ceramic coatings were synthesized by electrophoretic deposition method, and followed by vacuum sintering and isothermally annealing at 1000 °C for different durations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to investigate their phase composition. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to examine their microstructure, while energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) was used to assess composition of the composite coatings. The results indicated that YSZ coating was composed of tetragonal and monoclinic phase after vacuum sintering at 1000 °C for 2 h under vacuum (<10−3 Pa). G-YSZ composite coatings were composed of tetragonal, monoclinic phase and a small amount of Gd2Zr2O7 phase after vacuum sintering at 1000 °C for 2 h, whereas the content of monoclinic phase in G-YSZ composite coatings increased with increasing Gd2O3 concentration. It was found that G-YSZ composite coatings were composed of tetragonal ZrO2 phase, monoclinic ZrO2 phase and cubic phase, whereas Gd2Zr2O7 phase disappeared, after G-YSZ composite coatings were isothermally annealed at 1000 °C in air for 100 h. A detailed description of the results and their discussion was presented in the paper.
High temperature stability and sintering resistance of Gd2O3-Yb2O3-Y2O3-ZrO2 (GYYZO) coating

Abstract:Solid-solution agglomerated ZrO2-based powders co-doped with Gd2O3, Yb2O3 and Y2O3 rare earth oxides were synthesized by solid-phase sintering and spray drying. The corresponding GYYZO coating was prepared by using atmospheric plasma spraying, while the 8YSZ coating was also prepared as a control group for the high temperature performance investigation. The high temperature structure and phase stability as well as the sintering resistance of both coatings were investigated by SEM, XRD, DSC, EPMA and TEM observations. The results showed that the 8YSZ coating began to undergo a phase transition of tetragonal (t) phase to monoclinic (m) after 50 h heat treatment at 1400 °C, while the GYYZO coating remained free of phase transition even heat-treated for up to 200 h, demonstrating a better phase stability. In addition, as an indicator of sintering resistance of the coating, the porosity of the 8YSZ coating decreased up to 90.1 % after 200 h heat treatment, while that of the GYYZO coating decreased only 20.6 %. The superior high temperature performance of GYYZO coating can be explained by the pinning effect of nano-pores on grain boundaries. The formation of nano-pores was associated with the evolution of defect clusters in the coating, which were facilitated by the substitution defects and oxygen vacancies created by the GdYb co-doping. During the heating process, these clusters migrated along with the grain boundaries and formed pearl-string-like nano-pores at the grain boundaries. The eventual formation of nanopores not only further inhibits grain boundary migration to reduce sintering, but also prevents the segregation of Y elements to hinder t-phase to m-phase transition.

Abstract:The effect of the beta phase size and shape on the oxidation behavior of the NiCoCrAlY coating fabricated by laser powder deposition (LPD) was investigated. Thermal cycling experiment performed at 1150 degrees C indicates that beta phase with smaller size and higher aspect ratio (dendritic or disc shape) benefits the exclusive formation of alumina, lower thermally grown oxides (TGO) growth rate and residual stress. The TGO lifetime of the LPD coating is almost a two-fold of that on the coating prepared by high velocity air fuel method, which is attributed to the nanoscale dendritic beta phase and dense microstructure.

Abstract:We have synthesized Yttrium (Y)-doped Cadmium Oxide (YCO) thin films by radio frequency magnetron sputtering with Y doping concentration up to 9%. We find that as-deposited YCO films are polycrystalline in the rock-salt structure with electron concentration increases slightly with Y doping concentration. After rapid thermal processing (RTP), the crystallinity of YCO films are improved, resulting in an increased Y activation up to a free electron concentration of 9 x 10(20)/cm(3) for samples with 9% Y. YCO films with low resistivity of 1.5 x 10(-4) Omega cm and high mobility of 122 cm(2)/V are obtained with 1.4% Y doping after RTP at 500 degrees C. The drop in mobility and increase in intrinsic band gap with Y concentration can be understood in terms of the anticrossing interaction between localized d-states of Y and extended conduction band states of CdO. Abstract:Protective magnesia coating on Y2O2S:Eu phosphor powders is formed by a layer‐by‐layer (LbL) method in aqueous solutions. The phosphor powders are first coated with a negative‐charged, anionic polyelectrolyte of ammonium salt of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA‐NH4), on which a second‐layer, positive‐charged magnesium hydroxide coating is then deposited by precipitation and heterocoagulation. A uniform and multiple Mg(OH)2/PAA‐NH4 bilayer coating on the phosphor powder is prepared by repeating the above coating processes. Protective magnesia coating on the phosphor powders, which is evidenced by insignificant degradation in optical properties after an extended period of electron bombardment, is formed by calcining.
