Abstract:A simple quadrilateral 12 DOF plate bending element based on Reissner–Mindlin theory for analysis of thick and thin plates is presented in this paper. This element is constructed by the following procedure: 1.the variation functions of the rotation and shear strain along each side of the element are determined using Timoshenko's beam theory; and2.the rotation, curvature and shear strain fields in the domain of the element are then determined using the technique of improved interpolation. The proposed element, denoted by ARS-Q12, is robust and free of shear locking and, thus, it can be employed to analyze very thin plate. Numerical examples show that the proposed element is a high performance element for thick and thin plates.

Abstract:The Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element (VFIFE) is a new analysis method based on point value description and vector mechanics theory. Based on fundamental principles of the VFIFE, the basic formulas of a triangular DKT thin-plate element are derived. The procedure for the determination of pure nodal deformation by dealing with both in-plane and out-of-plane rigid body displacements through a reverse movement is elaborated, and the method for the calculation of internal nodal forces through a deformation coordinate system is presented. Feasible approaches are also proposed for several special issues of a thin-plate element, including the mass matrix and inertia matrix of a particle, the numerical integration and interpolation method in stress calculation, and the rational value of time step and damping parameter. On this basis, the computer program of a triangular DKT thin-plate element is developed and numerical examples are provided. It has been shown that both static and dynamic analyses can be well performed for plate structures by the developed program, verifying the validity of the theoretical derivation and the reliability of the computer program. Results from this study lay a necessary foundation for the further development of a thin-shell VFIFE element.

Abstract:An analytical three-dimensional (3-D) p-version element for the vibration analysis of arbitrary quadrilateral thick plates is presented. With the additional hierarchical shape functions and analytically integrated element matrices, the computed accuracy is considerably improved. The computed natural frequencies of cantilever and simply supported square plates show that the convergence rate of the present element is very fast with respect to the number of hierarchical terms and it can predict very accurate modes. The element is applicable to the free vibration analysis of quadrilateral, polygonal plates as well as 3-D space structures. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is applied for the identification of damping ratios. Based on the Rayleigh damping model, the damped vibration response is obtained. A simple experiment is performed to verify the predicted vibration responses. The results show that the proposed element is also efficient for the vibration response analysis of plates.

Abstract:A triangular plate bending element, based on the generalized conforming element theory, has been formulated. The variations of the rotation and shear strain along each side are determined based on Timoshenko's beam theory. The rotation and shear strain fields within the element are then obtained using interpolation. As the plate becomes progressively thinner, the shear strain field approaches zero automatically, and thus the proposed element type is free of shear locking. The excellent performance of the proposed element type in the analysis of both thick and thin plates has been clearly illustrated in the numerical examples presented. Moreover, the formulation method presented in this paper is general, and thus can be used to develop quadrilateral elements. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:AbstractThe concept of a generalized conforming element14 is used to introduce a generalized compatibility condition under constant moment, and a new version of the generalized conforming triangular element for thin plate with nine degrees of freedom is developed. The formulation is as simple as for the conventional non‐conforming element, and it can be implemented in a routine manner. By satisfying the generalized compatibility condition under constant moments, the present element can always pass the patch test, and convergence towards an exact solution is guaranteed. The element gives highly accurate results, requires fewer degrees of freedom, and is not sensitive to geometrical distortion.

Abstract:A new simple 3-node triangular flat-shell element with standard nodal DOF (6 DOF per node) is proposed for the linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of very thin to thick plate and shell structures. The formulation of element GT9 (Long and Xu 1994), a generalized conforming membrane element with rigid rotational freedoms, is employed as the membrane component of the new shell element. Both one-point reduced integration scheme and a corresponding stabilization matrix are adopted for avoiding membrane locking and hourglass phenomenon. The bending component of the new element comes from a new generalized conforming Kirchhoff-Mindlin plate element TSL-T9, which is derived in this paper based on semiLoof constrains and rational shear interpolation. Thus the convergence can be guaranteed and no shear locking will happen. Furthermore, a simple hybrid procedure is suggested to improve the stress solutions, and the Updated Lagrangian formulae are also established for the geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results with solutions, which are solved by some other recent element models and the models in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, are presented. They show that the proposed element, denoted as GMST18, exhibits excellent and better performance for the analysis of thin-think plates and shells in both linear and geometrically nonlinear problems.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to solve bend- ing problems of thin uniformly loaded plates of reg- ular polygon shape in polar coordinates. Selecting a trisl function, which satisfies symmetrical condi- tions, the series solutions of uniformly loaded regu- lar polygon plates can be found. A good result can be obtained with only first five terms of the deflec- tion or bending moment formula. The result agree well with those of the same configuration plates in literature. This method can be applied to arbitrary thin regular polygon plates with uniform load or ar- bitrary loads.

Abstract:A generalized conforming element is presented in this paper—the inter-element compatibility in the sense of average displacement is guaranteed. A rectangular generalized conforming element of a thin plate with 12 degrees of freedom (RGC-12) is developed and applied to bending as well as buckling problems. Also, two types of triangular generalized conforming elements of a thin plate are developed: TGC-9 (9 d.o.f.) and TGC-9.1 (nine external d.o.f. and one internal d.o.f.).

Abstract:A new quadrilateral plate bending element with only 12 degrees of freedom is developed by using the area coordinate method. The convergence is ensured because the point and side average generalized compatibility conditions are satisfied. The shear strain fields are degenerated to be zero under the thin plate situation, so there is no shear locking phenomenon. Numerical examples show that the element is effective for a large range of thickness-span ratio from very thin plate to thick plate.

Abstract:A new quadrilateral thin plate bending element with 12 degrees of freedom, called element ACGCQ, has been developed by employing both the area coordinates and the generalized conforming approach. The deflection field of the element is expressed as a polynomial, in terms of area coordinates, which is corresponding to a fourth order polynomial in terms of Cartesian coordinates x and y. The 12 generalized conforming conditions implemented are four-point and four-line compatibility conditions for the deflection w, and four-line compatibility conditions for the normal slope ψn. Since the relation between the area and Cartesian coordinates is linear, the formulation of the element stiffness matrix is straight forward. Several numerical examples were employed to test the proposed element. The results obtained show that it possesses the advantage of high accuracy and reliability, rapid convergence and insensitivity to geometric distortion.

Abstract:A new 9-DOF triangular plate finite element for linear-elastic analysis of very thin to thick plates with small deformations is presented. The element is based on Mindlin plate theory and has higher-order interpolations that are conceived to satisfy all differential equations, including the equilibrium ones based on which the shear stress resultants are derived. Numerical investigation revealed certain limitations of the initial formulation which were resolved with an alternative approach for the derivation of the higher-order terms in the rotational fields. This resulted in a close relation of the formulation to the established DKT element for thin plate scenarios. Numerical investigation shows that the presented element has a correct rank, passes the patch test, is shear locking free and high-performing. It also indicates its consistent performance in regard to different meshing or boundary conditions, all of which makes it highly suitable for practical engineering applications.

A NEW C_1 CONFOMING QUADRILATERAL THIN PLATE BENDING ELEMENT

Abstract:A special interpolation of the element displacement field using the displacement along each side of element is proposed and a new C1 conforming quadrilateral thin plate bending element is developed. With the special interpolating method, the completeness conditions and the C1 conforming conditions of element are separated. C1 conformity and completeness of the element are proved theoretically. Numerical examples show that the element has more advantage than non-conforming elements.

Abstract:High performance finite element models greatly enhance the analysis of shell structures. This paper presents a new simple 3node triangular flatshell element, denoted as TSLT18, based on element GT9, a generalized conforming membrane element with rigid rotational motion as the membrane part of TSLT18. Onepoint reduced integration and a stabilization matrix are used to avoid membrane locking and hourglass problems. Then a generalized conforming KirchhoffMindlin plate element, TLSLT9, was developed based on the SemiLoof constrain conditions and a rational shear strain interpolation approach as the bending part of TSLT18. Numerical results show that the proposed element is valid for both thin and thick plates and shells; has a relatively simple formulation without any numerical difficulties; is accurate and provides good convergence for arbitrary mesh divisions. Hence, the element TSLT18 will facilitate shell analysis and applications in practical engineering problems.

Abstract:Based on the first-order-shear deformation theory (FSDT), a new simple displacement-based, triangular bending element for the analysis of laminated composite plates, called CGCLLM-T9, was presented in this paper, without shear locking. With Hellinger-Reissner, a new simple hybrid procedure was proposed to improve the stress solutions of such displacement-based elements. The results show that both displacements in any condition and stresses in the thick plates, especially the transverse shear stresses, can be obtained. In the thin plates, except for the transverse shear stresses, the others can be obtained. This element is fit to solve the problem with complex borderline. Numerical examples show that the proposed element is of good performance for moderately thick and very thin composite plates.

Abstract:The analytical trial function method was used to extend the existing Kirchhoff triangular thin plate element, to the corresponding lock-free Mindlin triangular thick plate element. The triangular thin plate element GPL-T9 was used as the example to be generalized to the thick/thin plate element GPLM. Numerical results show that the GPLM element not only degenerates to the original thin plate element as the plate thickness goes to zero with automatically eliminates shear locking but also provides high accuracy and excellent performance as either thin or thick plate elements.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:In this work, a new displacement-based Trefftz plate element is developed for size-dependent bending analysis of the thin plate structures in the context of the modified couple stress theory. This is achieved via two steps. First, the Trefftz functions, that are derived by introducing the thin plate bending assumptions into the three-dimensional governing equations of the modified couple stress elasticity, are adopted as the basis functions for designing the element's displacement interpolations. Second, the generalized conforming theory is employed to meet the interelement compatibility requirements in weak sense for ensuring the convergence property. The resulting 4-node displacement-based plate element performs like nonconforming models on coarse meshes and gradually converges into a conforming one with the mesh refinement. Numerical tests reveal that the new element can efficiently capture the size-dependent mechanical responses of thin microplates and exhibits satisfactory numerical accuracy and distortion tolerance. Moreover, as the element has only three degrees of freedom (DOF) per node, it can be easily incorporated into the commonly available finite element programs.
