Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering in China

Abstract:Since 1982, the symposiums on mechanism in China has been held fifteen times. In the past 24 years, Chinese mechanism has experienced a phenomenal development. Generally, fundamental research on traditional mechanisms is enhanced; mechanism and creative design of products are closely combined; modern mechanism with advanced and new technology is opened up; and mechanism is promoted to modernization. These are manifested in the following aspects: theory research on analysis and synthesis of traditional mechanism is deeply developed; computer-aided design on mechanisms is realized vigorously; conceptual design of mechanism system and mechanical products is energetically pushed; research on robot mechanisms and its industrial application is deeply developed; research on analysis and synthesis of controllable mechanisms and compliant mechanisms are energetically carried out; research on the dynamics of mechanisms and machines is vigorously developed; and reformation of teaching contents and system of mechanism is energetically carried out. Through the above-mentioned aspects of theory research and practical application, the theoretical and academic levels of Chinese mechanism can be considered at the advanced international level. However, there are not many original and breakthrough research achievements of fundamental research in China. In the meantime, there is a larger gap in the aspect of practical application of mechanism in the country compared with advanced countries in the world.

Abstract:During recent decades,the term of‘mechanism’ has become a buzzword in organizational management study.However,the understanding and using of this concept has remained vague and even contradictory.Based on analyzing 55 papers published in 9 organizational management journals from 2001 to 2015,and referring to related studies from sociology and philosophy of science,wemake a relatively clarified,exact,and richer definition for "mechanism" and suggest four feasible ap-proaches to the study of mechanism in organizational management domain.At last,we discuss themost important challenges we will face and available directions we should explore in the future.

Abstract:For the past two years, robots comeback with a high profile and present huge market prospects; advanced manufacturing equipment especially high-end CNC machine tool is still in urgent demand. However, their development is still not going well due to that basic components and CNC systems rely on imported goods, manufacturing techniques of key functional units are missing, reliability and performance of lead rails and lead screws are not good enough. In particular, swing tool heads and high-performance reducers, which greatly determine the functionality and performance of machine tools and robots, are important barriers for machine tools and robots in China to catch up with the world’s advanced level. Mechanism is a basic discipline of equipment structural design, and mechanism innovation is fundamental to the equipment innovation. Then, mechanism is naturally charged with the responsibility of innovation. Incorporating with the structure, functionality and application of machine tools and robots, the opportunities encountered by mechanism in the current stage of China have been analyzed and discussed. Hopefully, this work can provide references for the effective integration of academic research and industrial demand for advanced manufacturing equipment.

Abstract:Conceptual design is the most critical and creative phase of design. Recently, increasing attention has been directed to supporting conceptual-level computer aided creative design and its theories and methodologies. Specifically, for conceptual design of mechanical products, this paper presents a novel function solving model for mechanical product design and highlights the importance of systematic synthesis to achieve creative design. Then it builds a framework as a function-effect-process-action-mechanisms (FEPAM) mapping process, which enables creative design on the basis of conceiving different action schemes. After that, several key points are elaborated including 1) representing and decomposition methods of functions and motion behaviors; 2) action scheme representing method based on network plan techniques; and 3) variation and creation methods based on action scheme transformations.

Abstract:On the premise of deep study on modem mechanisms and computer aided conceptual design( CAGE)) ,the shape and development of generalized mechanism are investigated. The generalized mechanism is classified. The disadvantages of existing knowledge base of traditional mechanism are analyzed. On the basis of these, the establishing method of knowledge base of motor-driven generalized mechanism conceptual design is studnil. Applied examples are given about selected mechanism scheme. This knowledge base can effectively aided the design of mechanical function principle scheme and the type synthesis. It can also effectively support product creative design.

Abstract:The past three decades have witnessed the explosion of nanoscience and technology, where notable research efforts have been made in synthesizing nanomaterials and controlling nanostructures of bulk materials. The uncovered mechanical behaviors of structures and materials with reduced sizes and dimensions pose open questions to the community of mechanicians, which expand the framework of continuum mechanics by advancing the theory, as well as modeling and experimental tools. Researchers in China have been actively involved into this exciting area, making remarkable contributions to the understanding of nanoscale mechanical processes, the development of multi-scale, multi-field modeling and experimental techniques to resolve the processing-microstructures-properties relationship of materials, and the interdisciplinary studies that broaden the subjects of mechanics. This article reviews selected progress made by this community, with the aim to clarify the key concepts, methods and applications of micro- and nano-mechanics, and to outline the perspectives in this fast-evolving field.

Abstract:Based on an analysis of mechanism combination methods of a current mechanism system kinematic scheme, input/output kinematic behavior and their constraint relations were proposed to represent the kinematic behavior knowledge of a mechanism system. Furthermore, a tree structure of a kinematic behavior decomposition process for a mechanism system was provided. Considering multiple outputs for a mechanism system, the matching algorithm and the attributes propagation method of kinematic behavior were used to generate a mechanism combination scheme. Its intermediate design solution and the constraint relations between input and output are generated to fill the common blackboard. Moreover, using information in the blackboard as input motion, the behavior attributes of other process actions are transmitted to attribute items of the blackboard, which finally enables a computer-aided automatic design process of a mechanism system kinematic scheme. To avoid the problem of schemes combination explosion caused by unbounded depth in the search process, bounded depth-first search was used to control the number of expanded hierarchies for a design tree. Finally, an example was given to show its feasibility and solution efficiency.

Abstract:Mechanical automation means that in the absence of human intervention the mechanical instrument can automatically perform the work process according to pre-designed procedures or instructions. Mechanical automation has a wide range of applications in a number of areas with their application space. It has played an important role in promoting human applications and transformation of nature. Foreign countries, as early as in the industrial revolution period, have begun the construction of mechanical automation. China started such process later and achieved great success, which is still far behind the development of mechanical automation in the developed countries. Therefore, this paper studies the mechanical automation technology development trends based on the technical characteristics. First it described the design principles of mechanical automation, analyzed the design of the program reasoner, and put forward several mechanical automation technology application strategies, which would serve as reference for China’s mechanical automation technology.

Abstract:Internal combustion engine (ICE) is a widely used motive power machine with complicated structures, and the working conditions of its components and parts are harsh due to the periodic explosive pressure. while guaranteeing the normal operation of the whole mechanism, the clearances will lead to contact, friction, and even collision between the kinematic pair elements, which further impact the stability and reliability of the ICE operation. The dynamics theory and experimental research status of mechanisms with clearances as well as some latest applications of the dynamics theory in mechanisms with clearances in the ICE field were reviewed in this study, mainly from two aspects: the dynamic theory models (the clearance model, the normal contact force models and the tangential frictional force models) for mechanisms with clearances and experimental research. At last, the follow-up developments of the dynamics theory of mechanisms with clearances and the possible difficulties to be encountered in the ICE field in the future were summarized and expected.

Abstract:We have introduced two quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approaches for materials modeling. One is based on quantum mechanical coupling and the other on mechanical coupling. The formalism of both approaches is described in detail. The validations of the methods are demonstrated in terms of atomic and electronic structure. Finally, the applications of the methods are surveyed, including applications in vacancy clusters, dislocations, nanoindentations, and fractures.

Abstract:Mechanical design and manufacture were the basic industry of modern production, which had experienced a relatively long development stage. With the integration of the internet and the internet of things, the development speed of modern industry had been gradually accelerated, which not only improved the actual production efficiency, but also ensured the production quality, as a result that the safety problems had been effectively controlled. With this development trend, the characteristics of mechanical design, manufacture and automation should be fully tapped, so that the final production level could be significantly improved after the production advantages being given full pay to. This paper mainly studied the application status of mechanical design, manufacture and automation, and explored the development trend of mechanical design and manufacture in the future, so as to provide power for the further development of modern industry and ensure the safety of actual production.

Abstract:While conventional mechanics of materials offers a passive understanding of the mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift, referred to as mechanomaterials, is emerging to enable the proactive programming of materials' properties and functionalities by leveraging force-geometry-property relationships. One of the foundations of this new paradigm is nanomechanics, which permits functional and structural materials to be designed based on principles from the nanoscale and beyond. Although the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy at the present time, we discuss the current progress in three specific directions closely linked to nanomechanics and provide perspectives on these research foci by considering the potential research directions, chances for success, and existing research capabilities. We believe this new research paradigm will provide future materials solutions for infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and environment.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of science and technology, automation is increasingly used in industrial production, which has greatly improved production efficiency. Based on this, this article studies the application and development trend of automation in mechanical manufacturing. First of all, automation was summarized, its concept, basic characteristics and development status were introduced, and then the application of automation technology in machinery manufacturing was analyzed, including application principles and practical applications. Next, we explained the development trend of automation in the field of machinery manufacturing, and then several problems in the current development were explained, and finally we put forward corresponding suggestions based on the above analysis. The application of automation technology has great advantages in cost control and improving the core competitiveness of the market. To ensure its long-term development, we must attach importance to the introduction of new technologies and the optimization of production quality.

Mechanism and Machine Theory

Abstract:In this work, a new basic framework of robotic mechanism topology is proposed, which includes: 1 two important concepts (i.e., topological structure and kinematic characteristics), 2 three basic formulas (i.e., POC equation of serial mechanisms, POC equation of parallel mechanisms (PMs), and DOF formula) and 3 topological structure synthesis methods of PMs. Based upon this framework, literature review and comparative study of four original theories for topological structure synthesis of PMs (i.e., screw theory, velocity space, subgroup and POC set) are carried out. Moreover, it is found that these four theories and their computable methods (linear operation, nonlinear symbolic operation and linear symbolic operation) originate from different definitions and their mathematical representations of the two concepts. These basic formulas accounting for mechanism topology are derived based on the two concepts, which reveal the mapping relationship among topological structures, POCs and DOF of mechanisms. Further, these four theories are grouped into two categories: 1 the algebraic methods related to the fixed coordinate system for screw theory, velocity space and subgroup; 2 the intrinsic geometry method independent of the fixed coordinate system for POC set.

Based on the development of the measuring and testing technology in global mechanical manufacture in recent years, the development trend and the research hotspots of measuring technology in this field.
