Abstract:A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was used in the laser marking process of stainless steel. The influence of the pulse frequency of the laser beam on the mark depth, width and mark contrast have been studied in this paper. The mark contrast is the ratio of the apparent brightness between the mark and unmarked areas which shows the clearance degree of the mark. An optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and surface profile instrument were used to measure the effects of pulse frequency on the mark depth and width. An image-analysis system with a frame-grabber card and a charged-couple-device (CCD) was used to measure mark contrast. It has been found that the mark depth, width and mark contrast depend on the interaction process of the laser beam and the material, which was influenced dramatically by the pulse frequency. The pulse frequency of the laser has a significant effect on the mark quality. There is maximum mark depth when the pulse frequency is about 3kHz, while mark width almost keeps constant at different pulse frequency. With the pulse frequency increasing, evaporation of material becomes less, and at the same time oxidization becomes more significant, which leads to the improvement of mark contrast. The highest mark contrast could be obtained when the pulse frequency of laser was about 8kHz.

Abstract:Electric field modeling of nodular defects is performed to investigate the interaction between defective multilayer coatings and Gaussian profile laser beam. Light intensity is significantly enhanced as large as 6 times within the nodular defects. Different geometries of defects irradiated by laser beams at 0 to 40 deg incident laser angles are analyzed. Nodules with large but shallow seeds, or irradiation of 40 deg p-polarized laser beam, tends to produce the greatest enhancement effect.

Abstract:In the laser marking process system, a liquid crystal display (LCD) was used as the image mask, which can display dynamically and flexibly the various images by the programmable control. A nanosecond pulsed laser (1064nm) was applied to investigate the characteristic of laser photolithography fabrication technology. The light modulation function of LCD mask was firstly discussed by theory. By observing the graphics morphology with a high-powered optical microscope, it was found that the graphics of laser marking with LCD mask shows that its edges were not ablated but its line inside was ablated. According to analysis, the reasons of this phenomenon are due to the opaque lattice effect and the high light transmittance of black pixel. Results showed that the light modulation function of LCD mask was decided by adjusting the light transmittance with controlling the pixel voltage and a complete graphics was ablated in the range of 0.6J/cm2 similar to 0.8J/cm2.

Abstract:Metal workpiece was processed by nanosecond pulsed laser electrochemical micro-etching with masks patterns in the shape of letter "E". In the experimental system established, the effect of different laser energy on processing quality was studied in air. In the different concentrations of the electrolyte, through optimized composite machining parameters, machining results of different laser energy with the masks were analyzed and compared in Aluminum alloy and Stainless steel. There was a large of difference in machining morphology by laser electrochemical micromachining with masks in two different metal materials. The results show that laser electrochemical micro-etching with masks has high efficiency and the prospects for the large-scale production, but the etching precision should be also further improved. Moreover, the nanosecond pulsed laser thermal-stress etching, electrochemical etching and the two combined coupling etching are the main factors to achieve the metal removal.

Abstract:The interaction of Q-switched laser with metal was studied. According to the approximate model of plasma cloud flying apart and the transient temperature gradient equation, the qualitative analysis of the mechanism of hollow shaping was made. By means of the power balance equation on the evaporating front, the selection of the optimum parameters required by different types of marking was discussed. The theoretical analysis agrees with the experimental results.

Abstract:The femtosecond laser color marking stainless steel surfaces with different incident wavelengths were investigated theoretically and experimentally. It indicates that the spectral regions of the colors firstly increase and then reduce with increasing spatial periods of the ripples induced by laser irradiation. Additionally, the colors are gradually changed from blue to red due to the elongation of the diffracted light wavelengths. As a result, the color effects are distinctly different. This study offers a new controllable parameter to produce diverse colors, which may find a wide range of applications in the laser color marking, art designing and so on.

Abstract:The method of high-energy short pulse laser etching underwater based on thermal - mechanical effect was put forward. In the experiment system with mask and salt solution , heat affected zone was visible decrease and the image of mask was micro-copied at the workpiece surface. Owing to the photochemical reaction and thermal-mechanical coupling effect, uniform line width of 120μm can be obtained.

Abstract:Laser current is a key parameter in laser direct-part marking symbols on a substrate. Different laser current can create enormous impact on bar code contrast, but the influencing regularities are unclear. In this paper, a new significance test method based on the multivariate nonlinear model was proposed to investigate the influencing regularities. First, the multi-clement nonlinear stepwise regression model between the laser current, the laser line spacing and symbol contrast was established, and then the model significance test was employed to evaluate the influence between the two factors and symbol contrast. Finally, the influencing regularities were found by comparing the influence between the laser current and the laser line spacing. These regularities are that along with the laser current value increasing the influence of laser current on symbol contrast decreases and that the effect is much smaller and can even be neglected when the laser current reaches or exceeds a certain value. This certain value is 15 A in the Nd:YAG laser Direct-part marking symbols on the aluminum alloy experiments.

Abstract:The topic of durable coloration and passivation of metal surfaces using state-of-the-art techniques has gained enormous attention and devotion with unremitting efforts of researchers worldwide. Although femtosecond laser marking has been performed on many metals, the related coloration mechanisms are mainly referred to structural colors produced by the interaction of visible light with periodic surface structures. Yet, general quantitative determination of the resulting colors and their origins remain elusive. In this work, we realized quantitative separations of structural colors and compositional pigmentary colors on 301LN austenitic stainless steel surfaces that were treated by femtosecond laser machining. The overall color information was extracted from surface reflectance, with structural color given by numerical simulations, and oxide compositions by chemical state analysis. It was shown that the laser-induced apparent colors of 301LN steel surfaces were combinations of structural and compositional colorations, with the former dominating the angular response and the latter setting up the brownish bases. In addition to the quantification of colors, the analysis method in this work may be useful for the generation and specification of tailored color palettes for practical coloration on metal surfaces by femtosecond laser marking.

Abstract:This study reported the sequential combination of femtosecond laser ablation and induced micro/nano structures on the titanium alloy and nickel‐based alloy for laser marking. The preliminary optimization of processing parameters of laser ablation for the marking units is first carried out. The repetition frequency of 50 kHz, the pulse energy of 150 µJ, the scanning speed from 60 to 80 mm s−1, and the groove spacing from 10 to 20 µm are selected as the best processing parameters. Laser‐induced micro/nano structures with anti‐reflective properties are formed in the primary laser marking zone, which resulted in further improvement in the recognition rate of the markings. For the two alloys, the recognition rate of combined markings is higher than that of primary markings, because the reflectance of the combined markings is lower than that of the primary markings in the spectrum ranging from 380 to 1000 nm. X‐ray diffraction analysis showed that the phase constitution of the processed surface is basically consistent with that of the substrate. Moreover, the cracks and re‐cast are not observed under metallographic analysis. Therefore, the sequential combination of femtosecond laser ablation and induced micro/nano structures provides a new marking technology with high recognition rate and quality.

Abstract:Laser marking offers precise, consistent, and permanent markings, making it an ideal choice for various applications that require accurate identification. The excimer laser, a type of pulsed gas laser that operates in the ultraviolet spectrum, offers unique advantages. Its short wavelength allows the emitted ultraviolet light to be absorbed by most materials, and its penetration depth is extremely low, causing minimal damage to the interior of the material. Furthermore, the excimer laser's high photon energy enables the creation of extremely fine features, leading to unparalleled precision in machining. Based on the photochemical mechanism, excimer laser marking produces minimal heat-affected zones, preventing thermal damage and ensuring crisp, clear edges to markings. This makes it particularly well-suited for the precise patterning needed in surface marking. This paper reviews excimer laser marking techniques, including laser direct ablation marking, diffraction marking, laser induced chemical reactions marking and laser implantation marking. Each technique is explained in detail, highlighting its unique mechanisms, preparation process and outlining potential application prospects. In summarizing the capabilities of excimer laser marking technology, this paper also briefly explores future research directions, suggesting promising advancements that could further enhance the technology's utility in industrial and manufacturing settings.

Abstract:In advanced manufacturing, the laser applications are dominated by laser micro-machining, a most effective technique for marking in many production industries. Laser marking on aluminum 6061 alloy using fiber laser has been investigated in the present project. Experimental analysis on the basis of response surface methodology (RSM) has been carried out for determination mathematical model, and an optimization analysis on marking quality, e.g., mark width and mark depth has been carried out. The most influencing laser marking process parameters under consideration on are power setting, duty cycle, pulse frequency, scanning speed, and defocus height (deviation of the focal plane from material top surface). Defocus height, a relatively uncommon process variable, plays a very important role in determining the mark characteristics. Experimental validation of the proposed models shows that desired mark width and mark depth can be optimized by adjustment of proper process parameters.
Influence of Laser Marking on Microstructure and Corrosion Performance of Martensitic Stainless Steel Surfaces for Biomedical Applications

Abstract:The medical device industry demands unique device identification (UDI) tags on metallic components applied via laser marking. A common issue is that the visual appearance of the marking becomes poorly legible over time due to loss of contrast. Nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation was used to grow an oxide layer on two different martensitic stainless steels AISI 420F mod and 420B to compare the influences of the chemical composition of the steel (with and without S), power density, and energy input. The corrosion behavior was found to depend strongly on laser energy input. The presence of sulfur negatively affected the corrosion resistance and narrowed the applicable window for the laser processing parameters significantly. For the sulfur-containing AISI 420F steel, 3‒5 μm wide craters formed on the surface after laser marking, which is interpreted as thermal degradation of protruding MnS inclusions resulting from the laser marking process. Also, substantial cracking in the oxide layer was observed. The marked specimens suffered from corrosion in a thin zone below the formed oxide layer. This behavior is attributed to Cr-depletion in the zone adjacent to the oxide layer, resulting from providing Cr to the growing oxide layer.
Controllable Dot-Matrix Marking on Titanium Alloy with Anti-Reflective Micro-Structures Using Defocused Femtosecond Laser

Abstract:This paper reports on the fabrication of marking units of controllable size ranging from 300 to 500 mu m equipped with anti-reflective micro-structures using defocused femtosecond laser on titanium alloy TC4. The results show that the range of diameters of marking units (laser ablation-based craters) goes through three stages with the increase of the pulse number. The craters are too shallow for the first stage and too deep for the third stage to meet the criterion of depth, so the second stage turns out to be the optimal stage of parameter selection, where the diameter and depth of marking units are within a desired range with modification of laser energy and defocusing amount. Besides meeting the marking requirements of the size and morphology, the anti-reflective micro-structures with great color difference are formed on the surface of marking units, which contributes to the high recognition rate. Compared with the conventional marking methods, this method has a great recognition rate without recast layer and micro-cracks. Therefore, the femtosecond laser-based processing would provide a new marking technology with high efficiency and quality.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that traditional blackening technology and chemical passivation method may cause pollution to the environment in the process of enhancing the corrosion resistance of the material surface, the surface of Q235B carbon steel was treated by nanosecond pulse fiber laser. The surface morphology, oxide film thickness, chemical composition and corrosion resistance of the material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical workstation, respectively. The impact of different laser single-pulse energy densities and spot overlap rates on the density, stability and corrosion resistance of the surface oxide film layer was studied. The results show that when the laser fluence is 3.96 J/cm 2 and the spot overlap rate is 80%, the material surface has the best corrosion resistance. When the laser fluence is too high, a porous yellow-brown metal oxide film is formed on the material surface, which damages the material matrix and leads to secondary corrosion, causing a decrease in corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Laser induced plasmas spectroscopy(LIPS) has acquired great interest in recent years as a new method of elemental analysis.Qualitative information about the elemental composition of an object can be rapidly obtained using LIPS.In the experiment,laser induced plasma spectroscopy was used to determine the carbon content in carbon steel.The plasma was formed by focusing a Nd:YAG laser on the sample surface.By optical emission spectroscopy of the plasma,193.09 nm C line was selected for analysis.The calibration curve was obtained,and the detection limit was within 460 ppm.The results show that this technique can be applied for direct composition determination in steel analysis.

Abstract:Marking of metal products is essential in many industrial processes. It is mandatory for the finished products according to regulations of the European and world legislation. Traditional marking usually creates contrasting symbols that can easily be erased and forged.In recent years, a new method for product identification has appeared - color marking. One of the advantages of this method is that it is difficult to counterfeit. This article aims to present the progress of color marking technology on two types of materials. Three groups of factors have been analyzed: the laser source; the technological process; material properties. Their role in obtaining a specific color marking on Ti and AISI 304 is shown. The results are presented in tables. Each color can be repeated only with strict observance of the three groups of factors.

Abstract:Millisecond laser machining has been widely applied to meet the demands for increasing efficiency and accuracy in the manufacturing industry. But, the residual heat affected zone (HAZ), recast layer and internal microcracks represent a serious impediment to further application. Experiments were conducted to analyse these machining defects for a millisecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser cutting operation of AISI 304 stainless steel using O-2 as the assist gas. Metallographic tests were adopted to investigate the characteristics and structure of HAZ, as well as recast layer. The formation mechanism of the recast layer, the HAZ and microcracks were explained. Based on the energy spectrum of the kerf surface. electrochemical corrosion with acid solution was employed to remove the recast layer above the HAZ layer-by-layer. Through subsequent ultraviolet (UV) nanosecond laser processing of the crack region it can be verified that microcracks not only exist in the recast layer, but also penetrate deep into the HAZ from the perspective of the upper and sectional view of the kerf.

Abstract:Laser‐induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) can form structural color on the metal surfaces with high production efficiency and thermal stability, and has been used in various industrial applications such as unfaded color marking and anti‐counterfeiting. Herein, a novel fabrication scheme of multilayer LIPSS is proposed by multiple writing in situ with changing the laser polarization direction, to exhibit an effect of color superposition. To verify this approach, the color formation mechanism of LIPSS on the stainless‐steel surface is analyzed by finite‐element numerical calculation and reveals that the high‐angular dispersion of LIPSS is mainly the result of optical diffraction occurring on the surface of periodic structures. The relationship between the angular dispersion of multilayer LIPSS and laser‐processing parameters is established. Through the proposed multilayer LIPSS coloring technology, vivid full‐color patterns on the steel surface are demonstrated, and the in situ superposition of three‐layer graphs is realized, which can greatly enrich the color levels and be competitive in industrial applications.
