Abstract:The direct electroplating of copper film on an ultrathin cobalt film in the alkaline bath was investigated. The plating bath consists of CuSO4·5H2O and ethylenediamine. It is found that the ethylenediamine can well stop the cobalt reaction with copper ion and make the copper deposition on cobalt possible. The experimental results show that the copper films on the cobalt have a high preferential (111) orientation, very low surface roughness and low resistivity.
Mitigating Cobalt Phthalocyanine Aggregation in Electrocatalyst Films through Codeposition with an Axially Coordinating Polymer

Abstract:Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) is a promising molecular catalyst for electroreduction of CO2, but its catalytic activity is limited by aggregation at high loadings. Codeposition of CoPc onto electrode surfaces with the coordinating polymer like poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) breaks up aggregates and forms more distributed polymer‐catalyst composite films for enhanced CO2 reduction activity. Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) is a promising molecular catalyst for aqueous electroreduction of CO2, but its catalytic activity is limited by aggregation at high loadings. Codeposition of CoPc onto electrode surfaces with the coordinating polymer poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) mitigates aggregation in addition to providing other catalytic enhancements. Transmission and diffuse reflectance UV–vis measurements demonstrate that a combination of axial coordination and π‐stacking effects from pyridyl moieties in P4VP serve to disperse cobalt phthalocyanine in deposition solutions and help prevent reaggregation in deposited films. Polymers lacking axial coordination, such as Nafion, are significantly less effective at cobalt phthalocyanine dispersion in both the deposition solution and in the deposited films. SEM images corroborate these findings through particle counts and morphological analysis. Electrochemical measurements show that CoPc codeposited with P4VPonto carbon electrode surfaces reduces CO2 with higher activity and selectivity compared to the catalyst codeposited with Nafion.

Abstract:Direct electrochemistry for catalase (CAT) embedded in the liquid crystal film of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) was investigated at pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrode by voltammetric methods. The reduction reaction involved the redox couple in CAT, i.e. FeIII/FeII couple. The electron transfer between the incorporated CAT and PG electrode was found to be greatly enhanced by DDAB. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant ks was fitted as 3.0±0.4 s−1 using the nonlinear regression analysis of the square wave voltammograms at a series of pulse heights. The pH dependence of the formal potential for CAT in DDAB film was 57 mV/pH, which suggested one-proton-transfer together with a one-electron reaction. Visible absorption and reflectance-absorbance infrared (RAIR) spectra inferred the similar heme environment of CAT in DDAB film to its native status. Circular dichroism (CD) results indicated DDAB affected slightly on the second structure of CAT.

Abstract:The aqueous electrochemistry of Dy@C-82 films and membrane films of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) encapsulated with DY@C-82 has been studied systematically. The redox responses of the Dy@C-82 films depend strongly on the supporting electrolytes. In the aqueous solution of tetrabutylammonium bromide, we obtained four cathodic waves at 0.040, -0.40, -1.04, and -1.35 V, and one oxidation wave at +0.31 V. For the membrane films of Dy@C-82-DDAB film, however, the well-defined redox responses in water are relatively independent of the supporting electrolytes because of the encapsulation and fine dispersion of Dy@C-82 in the DDAB membrane. Reversible reduction and oxidation waves were obtained even in the pH 7.0 buffer solution containing KCl, which is associated with the charge balance of the DDAB ions with the ions of Dy@C-82. It was found that DY@C-82 in the DDAB membrane promotes the encapsulation of hemoglobin (Hb) and Hb can catalyze the reduction of DY@C-82. Significantly enhanced electrocatalytic reduction of O-2 by Hb in the presence of Dy@C-82 has also been demonstrated. Here Dy@C-82 acts an electron-transfer mediator, which points to the potential application of metallofullerenes in biochemical sensing. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Catalysts play very important roles in artificial photosynthesis for solar energy conversion. In this present study, two water-insoluble cobalt porphyrin complexes, cobalt(II) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (CoP-1) and cobalt(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-bromophenyl) porphyrin (CoP-2), were synthesized and coated as thin films on the FTO working electrode. The films showed good activities for electrocatalytic water oxidation in aqueous solutions at pH 9.2. The Faradaic efficiencies of both films approached to similar to 100%, measured using a fluorescence-based oxygen sensor. The turnover frequencies were close to 0.50 s(-1) and 0.40 s(-1) for CoP-1 and CoP-2, respectively, under an applied anodic potential of 1.3 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) at pH 9.2. Importantly, no cobalt oxide particles were observed on the working electrode after catalysis. The stability of the catalyst films was further evaluated by UV-vis spectroscopy, inhibition measurements, mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The pH dependence of water oxidation on CoP-1 and CoP-2 suggested a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. The catalyst films could be recycled and showed almost unchanged catalytic activities when they were reused in new electrocatalytic studies of water oxidation.
Electrochemical Properties of Nanostructured Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate Containing K+ and Cs+ Synthesized in Water-in-oil AOT Reverse Microemulsions

Abstract:Herein a series of cobalt-iron Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) containing K+ and Cs+ were synthesized in water-in-oil AOT reverse microemulsions. The size, morphology and composition of the as-prepared cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) can be fine-tuned by conveniently varying the water-to-surfactant molar ratio (w) of the microemulsion, as confirmed by various techniques such as infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). These nanostructured PBA were thereafter employed to chemically modify electrodes to thoroughly investigate their electrochemical properties. Oxidized and reduced cobalt hexacyanoferrates were fabricated and characterized in the presence of alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) and NH4+ counteractions by cyclic voltammetry (CV). In addition, it was demonstrated that formal potentials of hexacyanoferrate (III, II) redox reactions were sensitive to the choice of electrolyte cations, and they correlated well with the sizes of hydrated Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+ and NH4+ except for Li+. Furthermore, the samples are found to vary significantly in permeability, probably due to the difference of composition, structure and morphology of products, and the changes during charging/discharging. Finally, it is noteworthy to highlight that the nanostructures of cobalt hexacyanoferrate synthesized at w = 5-40 had much more electrochemistry stability than that synthesized in aqueous solution in all electrolytes. Fabrication and electrochemical sensing performance of a composite film containing a phosphovanadomolybdate and cobalt(II) tetrasulfonate phthalocyanine

Abstract:A novel composite film consisting of the phosphovanadomolybdate H-4[PMo11VO40] (PMo11V) and cobalt(II) tetrasulfonate phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) was fabricated on quartz, silicon and ITO by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The composite film was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical behavior of the composite film was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and electrochemical impedance spectra. The results show that the composite film exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for the oxidation of dopamine, which is related to the V-V/V-IV and Co-II/Co-III couples. The proposed electrochemical sensor shows rather high sensitivity of 0.82 mu A/mu M, low detection limit of 1.3 x 10(-8) M (S/N = 3) and a linear response range from 8.3 x 10(-8) to 5.0 x 10(-4) M for detecting dopamine. Furthermore, compared to the single component polyoxometalate or cobalt(II) tetrasulfonate phthalocyanine film, the composite film shows superior catalytic efficiency, repeatability and long-term stability due to coexist of PMo11V and CoTsPc in the composite film. Therefore, this work demonstrates a successful paradigm for the fabrication of electroactive species in an organic/inorganic composite film, which can be potentially used for practical applications in electrochemical sensors. Abstract:The electrochemistry of films made from cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) containing C-60 or C-70 on a glassy carbon electrode was investigated in an aqueous solution containing 0.5 mol/L KCl, and two couples of reduction/reoxidation peaks for C-60 or C-70 were found in the potential range from 0 to -1.0 V. Electrochemically stable fullerene modified electrodes were produced in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, the fullerenes/DDAB film modified electrodes show electrocatalysis towards reduction of chloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid, indicating that fullerenes in the films are excellent electron-transfer mediators.

Abstract:Reductions of the protein myoglobin reconstituted with cobalt(III) heme [MbCo(III)] were accomplished in liquid crystal films of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) on pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrodes in pH 7 buffer. Slow electron transfer to MbCo(III) was detected by square wave voltammetry, and a well-defined, reversible cyclic voltammogram was observed for the MbCo(II)/MbCo(I) redox couple with a formal potential of −0.85 V versus SCE and 25 mV peak potential separation at 100 mV s−1. The MbCo(III)/MbCo(II) couple mediated the reduction of oxygen, while the MbCo(II)/MbCo(I) couple mediated the reduction of ethylene dibromide.

Abstract:Cobalt(II) hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) was deposited on graphite powder by an in situ chemical deposition procedure and then dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to prepare a surface-renewable CoHCF-modified electrode. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode in different supporting electrolyte solutions was characterized by cyclic voltammetry. In addition, square-wave voltammetry was employed to investigate the pNa-dependent electrochemical behavior of the electrode. The CoHCF-modified electrode showed a high electrocatalytic activity toward thiosulfate oxidation and could thus be used as an amperometric thiosulfate sensor.

Abstract:Cobalt-cyanometallate films electrochemically deposited on a platinum electrode were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), in-situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry (FTIRs) and potential resolved XPS measurements. The experimental results reveal that the CoHCF film on Pt electrode exists in two forms. The major form of the inner layer of the film is (M+)(2)Co(II)Fe(II)(CN)(6) where M+ denotes a cationic counter ion, in which both the Fe2+ and Co2+ centers can be oxidized to Fe3+ and Co3+ in the potential range of 0-1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl in NaCl solution. The major form of the outer layer is Co(II)(2)Fe(II)(CN)(6) in which electrochemical reactions in this potential range an limited by kinetic sluggishness. The FTIR and XPS spectra indicated that the Co centers change from high-spin state to low-spin state accompanying the Co2+/Co3+ oxidation reaction. Abstract:Although the properties of unsubstituted metal tetrapyrroles in solutions have received attention in numerous work, the physico-chemistry of their thin films remains poorly investigated. In this work, we constructed thin films of unsubstituted cobalt phthalocyanine on the surface of quartz plates and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes using the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) and drop casting techniques. In LS films, CoPc species are involved in strong intermolecular interactions, which result in formation of CoPc nanostructures and prominent changes in the ultraviolet-visible spectrum. Electrochemical reduction of CoPc in LS films at −0.9 V (versus silver chloride electrode) results in formation of Co(I) species. In contrast to the highly reactive nature of Co(I)Pc in solution, these species generated in thin films are relatively resistant to dioxygen due to the dense packing of CoPc units. These findings can further the development of CoPc-based resistive sensors utilizing not only common Co(II), but also Co(I) species, which may possess different sensitivity toward analytes.

Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with Cobalt(II)-Phthalocyanine Sites for Efficient Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Abstract:The rapid development in synthesis methodology and applications for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has been witnessed in recent years. However, the synthesis of highly stable functional COFs still remains a great challenge. Herein two-dimensional polyimide-linked phthalocyanine COFs (denoted as CoPc-PI-COF-1 and CoPc-PI-COF-2) have been devised and prepared through the solvothermal reaction of the tetraanhydrides of 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octacarboxyphthalocyaninato cobalt(II) with 1,4-phenylenediamine and 4,4′-biphenyldiamine, respectively. The resultant CoPc-PI-COFs with a four-connected sql net exhibit AA stacking configurations according to powder X-ray diffraction studies, showing permanent porosity, thermal stability above 300 °C, and excellent resistance to a 12 M HCl aqueous solution for 20 days. Current–voltage curves reveal the conductivity of CoPc-PI-COF-1 and CoPc-PI-COF-2 with the value of 3.7 × 10–3 and 1.6 × 10–3 S m–1, respectively. Due to the same Co(II) electroactive sites together with similar permanent porosity and CO2 adsorption capacity for CoPc-PI-COFs, the cathodes made up of COFs and carbon black display a similar CO2-to-CO Faradaic efficiency of 87–97% at applied potentials between −0.60 and −0.90 V (vs RHE) in 0.5 M KHCO3 solution. However, in comparison with the CoPc-PI-COF-2&carbon black electrode, the CoPc-PI-COF-1 counterpart provides a larger current density (jCO) of −21.2 mA cm–2 at −0.90 V associated with its higher conductivity. This cathode also has a high turnover number and turnover frequency, amounting to 277 000 and 2.2 s–1 at −0.70 V during 40 h of measurement. Green Cobalt Oxide (coox) Film with Nanoribbon Structures Electrodeposited from the Bf2-Annulated Cobaloxime Precursor for Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:In this study, we report for the first time on the use of a water-soluble BF2-annulated cobaloxime, Co(dmgBF2)2(OH2)2 (Co-DMB, dmgBF2 = difluoroboryl-dimethylglyoxime), as a catalyst precursor for electrocatalytic water oxidation. Oxygen gas bubbles were clearly produced on the FTO electrode at a low overpotential under neutral pH conditions containing Co-DMB. Interestingly, stable green films were produced under these conditions. The current densities can reach to >5 mA/cm(2) at 1.1 V and >10 mA/cm(2) at 1.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The morphologies of the films showed nanoribbon structures, which were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis requires efficient anodic electrode materials for water oxidation. Cobalt metal thin films are prepared through facile physical vapor deposition (PVD) on various nonconductive substrates, including regular and quartz glass, mica sheet, polyimide, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Subsequent surface electrochemical modification by cyclic voltammetry (CV) renders these films active for electrocatalytic water oxidation, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 330 mV in 1.0 m KOH solution. These electrodes are robust with unchanged activity throughout prolonged chronopotentiometry measurements. This work is thus significant to show that the combination of PVD and CV is very valuable and convenient to fabricate active electrodes on various nonconductive substrates, particularly with flexible polyimide and PET substrates. This efficient, safe and convenient method can potentially be expanded to many other electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Electrical or chemical doping of molecular films is an efficient means of improving and controlling charge injection and carrier transport in organic devices. Recent work demonstrated that bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(II) (cobaltocene, CoCp2) efficiently dopes a tris(thieno)hexaazatriphenylene (THAP) derivative, as shown by a 0.56 eV shift of the Fermi level toward the empty states and an increase of current density by a factor of 10(3) over undoped THAP devices. In this work, a combination of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering is used to elucidate the details of dopant incorporation into bulk films. Cobaltocene is observed to codeposit into the THAP matrix in a controllable manner, with preferential adsorption of the dopant onto the surface of the host film. In the case of CoCp2-doped tris(8-hydroxy-quinolinato) aluminum (Alq(3)) films, negligible amounts of the dopant are found in the bulk matrix and on the film surface, resulting in minimal improvements in the electrical characteristics of doped Alq(3) films. The process of CoCp2 adsorption onto a film surface or the evolving surface of a growing film which leads to dopant incorporation is likely assisted by charge transfer from cobaltocene to the host material, resulting in ion pairing between the dopant and host.
Electrochemical preparation, characterization and application of electrodes modified with hybrid hexacyanoferrates of copper and cobalt

Abstract:Hybrid copper–cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CuCoHCF) films were electrodeposited on a platinum electrode or a glassy carbon electrode by cyclic voltammetry and characterized by electrochemistry, XRD, ICP–AES and XPS. The results indicated that CuCoHCF was a substitution-type hybrid hexacyanoferrate. With the increase of Cu2+ content in the deposition solution, the Cu2+ content in the films increased correspondingly, while the lattice constant of the films decreased gradually. The CuCoHCF modified platinum electrode exhibited stable electrochemical responses in a wide pH range of 4–10 and permeability for monovalent cations in the order of K+>Li+>Na+>NH4+, both of which are different from those of the respective single component copper or cobalt hexacyanoferrates. XPS gave direct evidence that the iron element existed in the form of Fe(III) in oxidized films and was reduced to Fe(II) during X-ray scanning. K+ was incorporated into and excluded from CuCoHCF films to maintain electrical neutrality during the reduction and oxidation process, respectively. The CuCoHCF modified glassy carbon electrode exhibited obvious electrocatalytic activity towards both reduction and oxidation of hydrogen peroxide. When a cathodic catalytic current was used, the sensor exhibited a linear response in a hydrogen peroxide concentration range of 2.3×10−3–8.1×10−7 M with a detection limit of 6.6×10−8 M. The hydrogen peroxide sensor showed excellent stability and anti-interference ability towards oxygen and other easily oxidized compounds due to a low applied potential of 0.02 V, which is a great merit for further application in the field of biosensors.

Abstract:New heteroleptic dppe appended Co( III )-dithiocarbamate (dtc) complex cations with compositions [Co(S 2 CNEt 2 ) 2 (dppe)](PF 6 ) ( Co-Et ), [Co(S 2 CNPr i 2 ) 2 (dppe)](PF 6 ) ( Co-Pr ) and [Co(S 2 CNBu n 2 ) 2 (dppe)](PF 6 ) ( Co-Bu ) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, spectroscopic methods and crystallographic analysis. The single crystal X-ray diffraction results indicated that in all three complexes, the coordination environment around Co( III ) is distorted octahedral and Co( III ) is coordinated to four sulfur centers of the two dtc ligands and the two phosphorus centers of the dppe ligand. These complexes serve as precursors to yield cobalt sulfide/cobalt phosphide nano-composites d Co-Et , d Co-Pr and d Co-Bu by solvothermal decomposition of Co-Et , Co-Pr and Co-Bu , respectively. The decomposed materials have been characterized by PXRD and SEM-EDAX and explored as potential electrocatalysts for both oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions in basic and acidic media, respectively. Catalytic activity is dependent on the precursor complex and best OER and HER activities are observed for d Co-Bu with an η 10 of 230 mV and a Tafel slope of 192.11 mV dec −1 for the OER and an η 10 of 470 mV and a Tafel slope of 126.21 mV dec −1 for the HER.

Amphiphilic Cobalt Phthalocyanine Boosts Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Abstract:Due to the easy accessibility, chemical stability and structural tunability of macrocyclic skeleton, cobalt phthalocyanines immobilized on carbon supports offer an ideal research model for advanced electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO2RR). Herein, for the first time, an amphiphilic cobalt phthalocyanine (TC‐CoPc) is loaded on multiwalled carbon nanotubes to unveral the roles of hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties on catalytic efficiency. To our surprise, the resultant electrode exhibits FECO of 95% for CO2RR with TOF of 29.4 s−1 at the overpotential of 0.585 V over long‐term electrolysis in H‐type cell. In membrane electrode assembly device (MEA), the boosted transport of water vapor to catalyst layer slows down carbonate crystallization and enhances the stability of the electrode with FECO value of > 99% over 27 hours at −0.25 A, which represents the best selectivity and stability among reported molecular catalysts in MEA devices. The amphiphilic cobalt phthalocyanine, which decreases interfacial charge and mass transfer resistance and maintains effective contact between active sites and the electrolyte, highlights the exceptional CO2 conversion from molecular perspective.
