Abstract:The design of cost-effective and highly active, durable electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for promoting various energy conversion process such as water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Due to a wider selection of earth-abundance and low cost catalyst candidates (e.g., mixed 3d-transition metal oxides), OER in alkaline environment has attracted considerable interests during past years. Besides the recently developed Ni-Fe layered double hydroxides (LDH) catalysts, spinel phase transition metal oxides have also drawn particular interests owing to their well-defined rigid structure and thus potentially high stability during electrocatalysis. While improved OER activities have been demonstrated, currently most spinel transition metal oxides (mainly Co-based spinel oxides) still underperformed the state-of-the-art benchmark OER catalyst IrO2and the Ni-Fe LDH catalysts. Moreover, atomic insights into the surface structure that governs their OER reactivities and stabilities still remain very limited. We report here the exploration of iron-based spinel oxide nanoparticles (MxFe3-xO4, M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) as a new class of alkaline OER electrocatalysts with potentially both high electrocatalytic activity and high stability. Emphasis will be placed on atomistic understanding on the surface cation chemistry and surface atomic structures of the spinel oxide nanoparticles and their correlations with OER activities and stabilities. This will be achieved by comparative microscopic and spectroscopic studies of the nanoparticle surfaces before and after OER electrocatalysis using high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photon spectroscopy, which will be further complemented by density functional theory calculations. The results will provide important insights into the structure-activity-stability relations of spinel phase transition metal oxides as well as other mixed metal oxides for OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:An effective strategy using d-block metal hybridization was proposed to induce electronic interaction and promote the synergistic effect, aiming to enhance the OER performance of cost-effective spinel LiMn2O4. Indeed, we deployed a series of LiNixMn2-xO4 catalysts substituted with Ni, yielding the increase of Mn valence states from Mn3.5+ to Mn4+. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 catalyst achieved an excellent OER performance in alkaline media, with an overpotential reduction more than 320 mV at 10 mA cm−2 compared to the unsubstituted LiMn2O4, as well as the electrochemical stability. It was shown to be superior to the most reported Mn-based oxides OER electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that Ni doped holes in the Mn site, leading to an increase in Mn4+, and that the shared covalent network of Ni 3d-O 2p-Mn 3d optimized an easier desorption of intermediates. These results pave a new example for modulating the chemisorption strength, thus enabling activating the activity and stability of OER process for cost-effective electrocatalysts based on spinel Mn oxides.

Abstract:Spinel-type oxides are technologically important in many fields, including electronics, magnetism, catalysis and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Typically, these materials are prepared by conventional ceramic routes that are energy consuming and offer limited control over shape and size. Moreover, for mixed-metal oxide spinels (for example, CoxMn3−xO4), the crystallographic phase sensitively correlates with the metal ratio, posing great challenges to synthesize active product with simultaneously tuned phase and composition. Here we report a general synthesis of ultrasmall cobalt manganese spinels with tailored structural symmetry and composition through facile solution-based oxidation–precipitation and insertion–crystallization process at modest condition. As an example application, the nanocrystalline spinels catalyse the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions, showing phase and composition co-dependent performance. Furthermore, the mild synthetic strategy allows the formation of homogeneous and strongly coupled spinel/carbon nanocomposites, which exhibit comparable activity but superior durability to Pt/C and serve as efficient catalysts to build rechargeable Zn–air and Li–air batteries.

Here, we report a eutectic dealloying strategy to activate the porous spinel NiFe2O4 nanowires with up to four metal cation substitutions. As-obtained spinel NiFeXO4 (X = Fe, Ni, Al, Mo, Co, Cr) delivers a benchmark current density of 10 mA center dot cm-2 at an overpotential of only 195 mV, outperforming most spinel phase OER electrocatalysts and comparable to the state-of-the-art NiFe hydroxides. It is stable for over 115 h of electrolysis. Aberration-corrected transmission electron micros-copy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, and atomic-scale strain mappings reveal that the multivalent cation substitutions result in substantial lattice distortion and significant electronic coupling of metal 3d and O 2p orbitals for increased covalency. Further theoretical calculations suggest that the NiFeXO4 are stabilized by the high configurational entropy, and their synergy favors the absorption of H2O molecules and lowers the adsorption energy barrier of the OOH* intermediate. The improved intrinsic activity together with the highly nanoporous structures contribute to the appealing apparent catalytic performances. The work demonstrates an effective approach for the synthesis of stable multicomponent spinel oxides and highlights the effectiveness of the multication substitution strategy for producing highly durable and active spinel catalysts, which meet multiplexed structure and superior property requirements in practical applications.

Abstract:The development of Li-O2 battery electrocatalysts has been extensively explored recently. The Co3O4 oxide has attracted much attention because of its bifunctional activity and high abundance. In the present study, toxic Co(2+) has been replaced through the substitution on the tetrahedral spinel A site ions with environmental friendly metals (Mn(2+), Fe(2+), Ni(2+), and Zn(2+)), and porous nanorod structure are formed. Among these spinel MCo2O4 cathodes, the FeCo2O4 surface has the highest Co(3+) ratio. Thus, oxygen can be easily adsorbed onto the active sites. In addition, Fe(2+) in the tetrahedral site can easily release electrons to reduce oxygen and oxidize to half electron filled Fe(3+). The FeCo2O4 cathode exhibits the highest discharging plateau and lowest charging plateau as shown by the charge-discharge profile. Moreover, the porous FeCo2O4 nanorods can also facilitate achieving high capacity and good cycling performance, which are beneficial for O2 diffusion channels and Li2O2 formation/decomposition pathways.

Abstract:High-entropy spinel oxide (Cr1/5Mn1/5Ni1/5Fe1/5Co1/5)(3)O-4 (CMNFCO) and its low- and medium-entropy counterparts including FeCo2O4 (FCO), (Ni1/3Fe1/3Co1/3)(3)O-4 (NFCO), (Mn1/4Ni1/4Fe1/4Co1/4)(3)O-4 (MNFCO) were prepared via a simple hydrothermal method, and their electrocatalytic performances towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 0.1 M KOH were investigated. Among all the synthesized spinel oxides, the high-entropy CMNFCO showed the best ORR activity with an onset potential E-onset = 0.88 V, a half-wave potential E-1/2 = 0.76 V and excellent ORR durability with 91.5 % current retained after 33 h-chronoamperometry test at 0.287 V vs. RHE. On the other hand, CMNFCO showed mediocre OER activity with an overpotential of 411 mV at 10 mA center dot cm(-2), which is more than 20 mV higher than the medium-entropy composition MNCFO. An Al-air battery using CMNFCO as the cathode catalyst was assembled and exhibited a maximum power density of 148.8 mW center dot cm(-2). Surface reconstruction of the high-entropy spinel in the electrolyte was revealed by in situ Raman spectroscopy. Based on the present study, we conclude that increasing the number of constituent elements does not necessarily improve the OER activity, but it may lead to surface reconstruction to benefit ORR.

Abstract:The catalysts are often used in fuel cells and metal-air batteries to speed up electrochemical reactions. In this study, we prepared CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with mainly inverse spinel structure and FeCo2O4 nanoparticles with mainly spinel structure as bifunctional catalysts by hydrothermal method. After annealing at 350 degrees C, pure CoFe2O4 and FeCo2O4 nanoparticles with uniform size distribution have been obtained. The CoFe2O4 nanoparticles showed high current density of 5.5 mA/cm(2) at -0.8 V in the ORR test. It's low Tafel slope of 83.0 mV/dec further confirmed the excellent ORR catalytic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles also showed good OER properties with satisfied current density of 35.7 mV/cm(2) at l.0 V and low OER Tafel slope of 71.0 mV/dec. Both the ORR and OER properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles showed good time stability which were compared with FeCo2O4 nanoparticles. These results indicated that CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with mainly inverse spinel structure had better electrocatalytic performance than FeCo2O4 nanoparticles with mainly spinel structure. Abstract:A major challenge that prohibits the practical application of single/double-transition metal (3d-M) oxides as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is the high overpotentials during the electrochemical process. Herein, our theoretical calculation shows that Fe will be more energetically favorable in the tetrahedral site than Ni and Co, which can further regulate their electronic structure of binary NiCo spinel oxides for optimal adsorption energies of OER intermediates and improved electronic conductivity and hence boost their OER performance. X-ray absorption spectroscopy study on the as-synthesized NiCoFe oxide catalysts indicates that Fe preferentially dopes into tetrahedral sites of the lattice, which induces high proportions of Ni3+ and Co2+ on the octahedral sites (the active sites in OER). Consequently, this material exhibits a significantly enhanced OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 201 mV cm-2 at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 39 mV dec-1, which are much superior to state-of-the-art Ni-Co based catalysts.

Herein, we reported the manganese doping method to decrease the concentration of oxygen vacancy (Vo) and form the Mn−O structure adjacent octahedral sites in spinel NiCo2O4−δ (NiMn1.5Co3O4−δ), which highly enhanced the activity and stability of spinel NiCo2O4−δ with a low overpotential (η) of 280 mV at j = 10 mA cm−2 and long-term stability of 80 h in acid media. The isotopic labelling experiment based on differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) clearly demonstrated the lattice oxygen in NiMn1.5Co3O4−δ is more stable due to strong Mn-O bond and synergetic adsorbate evolution mechanism (SAEM) for acid OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal highly increased oxygen vacancy formation energy (EVO) of NiCo2O4−δ after Mn doping. More importantly, the highly hydrogen bonding between Mn−O and *OOH adsorbed on adjacent Co octahedral sites promote the formation of *OO from *OOH due to the greatly enhanced charge density of O in Mn substituted sites.

Abstract:Acidic oxygen evolution electrocatalysts based on earth abundant elements are essential in the widespread application of proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Spinel oxides containing cobalt and manganese are promising candidates. Here, the oxygen evolution activity and stability of surfactant-free cobalt and manganese spinel oxides with average 7 nm side length are evaluated in 0.1 M HClO4. The oxygen evolution activity follows the trend Co3O4/CP > Co1.27Mn1.27Fe0.46O4/CP > Co2MnO4/CP > Mn3O4/CP, and only Co3O4/CP is stable towards the long-term OER in acid. The origin for increased activity of the Co3O4/CP is also investigated, and the results indicate that the Co site is intrinsically more active towards OER than the Mn site. Lower charge transfer resistance, lower apparent activation energy and close to optimum hydroxyl group adsorption energy corroborate the higher intrinsic OER activity of the Co3O4/CP. For the Co1.27Mn1.27Fe0.46O4 and Co2MnO4, electron interaction exists that alters the acidity of the metal center. The OER mechanism involves decoupled proton-electron transfer process, as indicated by the non-zero reaction order of [H+] in the reversible hydrogen scale. Severe leaching of metal-containing species is detected during the long-term oxygen evolution reaction in acid.

These nano-octahedra demonstrate enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media compared to their spherical counterparts and previously reported spinel electrocatalysts. At 0.85 V, they achieve a high mass activity (MA) of 60.0 A/g, surpassing their spherical counterparts (38.6 A/g). Moreover, the CoMn2O4 nano-octahedra exhibit favorable stability, maintaining an MA of 47.2 A/g after 10 000 durability cycles. This work highlights a promising approach for synthesizing advanced spinel nanooxides with controlled crystal facets, which hold the potential to serve as nonprecious metal ORR electrocatalysts. The enhanced ORR performance is attributed to the exposed active catalyst surfaces in the well-defined structures of the nano-octahedra, emphasizing the significance of catalyst shape control.

Abstract:In this paper, the electrocatalytic performance of cobaltite spinels for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolysis is studied. Cobaltites MxCo3-xO4 (M= Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn; x=1 or 0.9) are synthesized by the coprecipitation method and characterized for the OER performance. Cyclic voltammetric measurement confirms that the cobaltites exhibit different redox characteristic for Co cation couples. NiCo2O4 and MnCo2O4 show the redox couple of Co(III)/Co(II) during OER, while for ZnCo2O4 and Cu0.9Co2.1O4 are Co(IV)/Co(III). OER measurement reveals that all these cobaltite spinel electrodes show better performance than metal Ni electrode. And ZnCo2O4 shows the best performance for OER with the highest current density of 205mAcm−2 at potential of 0.7V. XPS result verifies that the cobaltites have the different surface Co cations distribution. The analysis discovers that the amount of the surface Co cations occupying the octahedral sites in spinel is crucial for OER performance.
Optimizing the Oxygen‐Catalytic Performance of Zn–Mn–Co Spinel by Regulating the Bond Competition at Octahedral Sites

Abstract:The excellent electrocatalytic performance of ZnMn1.4Co0.6O4/NCNTs for oxygen reduction reaction is verified, presenting significant power density and durability in Zn–air batteries. A bond competition mechanism for the octahedral sites of spinel is also proposed. The presence of bond competition between CoO and MnO enables to modulate and optimize the electronic structure of ZnMn1.4Co0.6O4, resulting in the superior electrocatalytic activity. By using the more electro‐negative Mn3+ ion to partially replace Co3+ at the octahedral site of spinel ZnCo2O4, i.e., forming ternary Zn–Mn–Co spinel oxide, the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction/evolution activity is found to be significantly increased. Considering the physical characterization and theoretical calculations, it demonstrated that the bond competition played a key role in regulating the cobalt valence state and the electrocatalytic activity. The partial replacement of octahedral‐site‐occupied Co3+ by Mn3+ can effectively modulate the adjacent Co–O bond and induce the Jahn–Teller effect, thus changing the originally stable crystal structure and optimizing the binding strength between the active center and reaction intermediates. Certainly, the Mn‐substituted ZnMn1.4Co0.6O4/NCNTs exhibit higher electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity than that of ZnCo2O4/NCNTs and ZnMn2O4/NCNTs, supporting that the Co–O bond covalency determines the ORR activity of spinel ZnCo2O4. This study offers the competition between adjacent Co–O and Mn–O bonds via the BOh–O–BOh edge‐sharing geometry. The ion substitution at octahedral sites by less electronegative cations can be a new and effective way to improve the electrocatalytic performance of cobalt‐based spinel oxides.

Abstract:The spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoplate exposed with hexagonal {111} facets is demonstrated to be a highly active catalyst, while the effect of cation substitution on the oxygen electrocatalysis is still unclear. Herein, the electrocatalytic activity of cation-substituted spinel cobaltite MCo2O4 (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) nanoplates with the {111} facets is investigated systematically by experiments and theoretical calculations. For both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, Ni-substituted Co3O4 hexagonal nanoplates show the best activity. It is mainly attributed to the increased surface energy per unit area and the enhanced oxygen species absorption ability, which are also evidenced by density functional theory calculations. Moreover, the three kinds of MCo2O4 nanoplates are applied in Zn-air batteries and the corresponding electrochemical performance is tested. Among the three batteries, NiCo2O4 hexagonal nanoplates also enable the highest peak power density of 110.3 mW cm(-2) and the most stable discharge-charge voltage profiles for 50 cycles, indicating that NiCo2O4 nanoplates are the promising catalyst for further Zn-air battery applications. Besides, this work illustrates that the substitution of Co by Ni or Fe can remarkably change the electronic structural states, thus tuning the electrochemical properties of the hexagonal Co3O4 nanoplates. Superior bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts based on Co2MnO4 with mixed site occupancy, Mn-rich surfaces and twin defects

Abstract:Co/Mn-based spinel oxides are promising electrocatalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), however, it is challenging to achieve high activities for ORR and OER simultaneously in one composition. Here, we report Co2MnO4 (C2M) with Mn-rich surfaces and abundant twin defects synthesized by a simple coprecipitation and annealing route, which exhibits excellent ORR activity (half-wave potential E1/2 = 0.830 V), long ORR durability (91% current retained after 12 h-chronoamperometry test at 0.45 V vs. RHE) and a low Delta E = 0.767 V between E1/2 and E10 mA/cm performances in rechargeable Zn-air batteries showing a high peak energy density of 136 mW/cm2 and a large specific capacity of 809.4 mAh/gZn. Combining comprehensive experimental investigations and DFT simulations, we reveal that the Mn-rich surfaces benefit bridge adsorption of O2 to promote the 4-electron reaction pathway in ORR, and the mixed site occupancy in the crystal structure induces Mn/Co-O orbital hybridizations to form an impurity energy level in the band gap to facilitate charge transfer. Furthermore, the bifunctional performance and the ORR durability can be further enhanced by acid treatment to show a lower Delta E = 0.750 V and to retain 98.5% ORR current in 12 h. This work provides not only a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst but also a new perspective of exploring simple synthesis method suitable for mass-producible electrocatalysts with highly active surfaces.

Abstract:In order to reduce the overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and improve energy utilization efficiency of water splitting, spinel oxides have attracted considerable interests in OER electrocatalysis due to their potentially both high activity and high stability. Inspired from highly active Fe sites identified in Fe-contained (oxy)hydroxides, there are particular interests in developing Fe-based spinel oxides, yet correlations between their surface structures and OER activities still remain elusive. In addition, the electrochemical stability of spinel oxides has not received adequate concerns as usually deemed stable in alkaline solution. Recent studies have shown a substantial metal ion dissolution (e.g. Fe dissolution in Fe-containing metal oxides) during OER electrocatalysis, yet a fundamental insight into the metal dissolution process, its effect on the OER stability, and an efficient way to control the metal dissolution remain largely unaddressed. Herein, we reveal the atomic and electronic structures (particularly the metal-oxygen hybridization) of a series of Fe-based spinel oxide nanoparticles (XFe2O4, X=Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, and Ni2+) by using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, electron energy loss near edge spectroscopy, in-situ Raman spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that substituting different divalent cations in the octahedral sites results in increasing metal-oxygen hybridization and thereby increasing activity in the order of Mn2+2+2+2+, with the most active Ni-Fe spinel oxide even superior to a benchmark IrO2 catalyst. DFT calculations suggest that the divalent cation X2+ in the octahedral sites dominantly contributes to the metal-oxygen hybridization, suggesting that it is the divalent cation rather than the trivalent Fe3+ that constitutes the active site of the Fe-based spinel oxides. We further compared the electrocatalytic stability of the Fe-based spinel oxide by using combined microscopic and spectroscopic methods by using in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and identical-location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM). Distinctly different extents of metal dissolution were observed in the four spinel catalysts, showing significant metal dissolution (Mn/Fe) in MnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 whereas much less metal dissolution (Fe) in CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4. Moreover, the Fe dissolution under potential-dynamic condition in the spinel oxides also shows quite different potential dependences, contributing to their different catalytic stabilities. Based on these results, we further developed a robust strategy to suppress Fe dissolution and thus improve the stability of the Fe-based spinels by intentionally adding Fe ions in the electrolyte.
