Abstract:The first two steps in Ag-O-Cs photocathode fabrication include silver film growth by vacuum deposition and glow discharge oxidation. It is found that there are texture structure and fractal structure in the silver oxide film by transmission electron microscope. The Hausdorf dimension of fractal calculated by computer is 1.80±0.01.

Abstract:The first two steps of the preparation of Ag-O-Cs photocathodes are the deposition of silver films and their oxidation with the glow discharge method. The fractal structure and texture structure in the silver oxide thin film have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Hausdorf dimension D of the fractal structure is calculated to be 1.80 +/- 0.01. The formation mechanism of the fractal structure is also discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
Fractal Description of Surface Topography of Ultrathin Au Films

Abstract:Surface topography of ultrathin Au films with different thicknesses,prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering technique,was analyzed by atomic force microscopy.Power spectral density was used to calculate fractal dimension of the ultrathin Au films.The results show that as sputtering time increases,the fractal dimension of Au films decreases from 2.579 to 2.500 in high frequency region,and that of Au films increase from 2.607 to 2.819 in low frequency region.The surface topography of Au films has multi-scale feature.Multifractal spectra show that the spectrum width α of Au films changes from 0.051 to 0.118,indicating that surface roughness of Au films increases with increasing sputtering time.The f of samples are positive,suggesting that the number of highest peak sites greater than that of lowest valley sites.
Study on Multifractal Spectrum of Semicontinuous Ag Films

Abstract:The topography of semicontinuous Ag films with thickness from 1.5nm to 67nm deposited by DC magnetron sputtering was measured with a transmission electron microscope(TEM).We quantitatively charactered inhomogeneous surface distribution and size distribution of Ag islands by means of multifractal theory.Multifractal spectra f(α)～α show that the spectrum width Δα increased with increasing the thickness at first,and decreased later.It indicates that the inhomogeneous surface distribution of Ag islands also increased at first,and decreased later.Size distribution of Ag islands transited from Ag islands of minimum volume playing important roles to Ag islands of maximum volume playing important roles when the thickness of thin film was beyond a certain critical value(between 12nm and 67nm).

We have performed an automated quantitative analysis of a batch of 1879 fractal Ag2O 2 O patterns in a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image within a radius of 2000 mm outward from the center of the X-ray beam. The morphology is similar to that of the diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) model. The fractal dimension (D) of Ag2O 2 O is between 1.7 and 1.5 from the center to the edge. The area distribution density of fractal Ag2O 2 O follows a quadratic function with radius R. It is found that the branches' number of fractal Ag2O 2 O is a key factor affecting the fractal dimension. The more branches the fractal has, the greater the D is. This is the first time that Ag fractal has been investigated by combining automated data analysis methods with batch experimental data. This data-driven approach provides a new research perspective for rationally regulating materials' fractal morphology and performance.

Abstract:Surface topography of Al-doped ZnO(AZO) thin films prepared by sol-gel process was measured with atomic force microscopic.The atomic force microscopic images of Al-doped ZnO thin films were studied by means of multifractal theory. Multifractal spectra were used to characterize the surface roughness of the thin film quantitatively.The results show that rms roughness of the AZO thin film with the Al doping concentration 0.5 at.% annealed at 550 ℃ was 1.817 but that with the Al doping concentration 1.0 at.% annealed at 600 ℃ was 4.625,the width of multifractal spectrum Δα increased from 0.019 to 0.287,the Δf changed from-0.075 to 0.124,respectively.

Abstract:Microstructure, surface topography and optical property of Ag-MgO composite cluster films with the silver volume fraction of 5%, 10%, 15%and 20%, grown by radio frequency magnetron co-sputtering process, were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. The results show that when the volume fraction rises from 5% to 20%, the average crystalline grain size of silver increases from 8.2 nm to 10.9 nm, the average particle diameter changes from 37.9 nm to 43.4 nm, rms roughness monotonically decreases to a valley, and then increases, the average transmissivity of visible spectrum decreases to a stable value.

Abstract:Cu2O flower/grass-like nanoarchitectures (FGLNAs) were fabricated directly on two category specimens of Cu foils and Cu film using thermal oxidation method. The FGLNAs are approximately 3.5 to 12 μm in size, and their petals are approximately 50 to 950 nm in width. The high compressive stress caused by a large oxide volume in the Cu2O layer on the specimen surface played an important role in the growth of FGLNAs. The effects of surface conditions, such as the surface stresses, grain size, and surface roughness of Cu foil and Cu film specimens, on the FGLNA growth were discussed in detail. PACS: 81. Abstract:In this paper, based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) data the surface morphology of tin-doped In2O3 (ITO) thin films, prepared by electron beam deposition method on float glass substrates, was systematically investigated using the multifractal analysis. Topographical characterization of the ITO film surfaces was realized by a novel multifractal approach which may be applied for AFM data. Detailed surface characterization of the 3D surface topography was obtained using statistical parameters, according to the ISO 25178-2: 2012. Multifractal analysis of the film surfaces revealed that ITO thin films have a multifractal geometry. The generalized dimension Dq and the singularity spectrum f(α) provided quantitative values that characterize the local scale properties of film surfaces at nanometer scale. Our results showed that the larger spectrum width Δα (Δα = αmax − αmin) of the multifractal spectra f(α) is related to the larger surface roughness.

Abstract:Fractal image processing has been applied to characterize the surface roughness of ZnO films as measured by atomic force microscopy. The simple fractal analysis suggests that the fractal dimension D can be used to describe the change of the whole grain morphology along the growth direction. Multifractal analysis shows that the scaling range is close to three orders of magnitude, which is larger than that of a simple fractal and most empirical fractals. The width of the multifractal spectrum can be used to characterize the roughness of the film surface quantitatively and the shape of multifractal spectrum can describe the ratio between the number of the lowest valleys and the highest peaks statistically.

Abstract:Fe3O4 novel fractal nanocrystals have been synthesized by a surfactant-assisted solvothermal process for the first time. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to investigate the novel fractal nanocrystals. The lengths of the fractals are about 2-3 mu m, and the trunks and branches of Fe3O4 fractals have almost the same diameters of ca. 30-50 nm. The roles of surfactant PEG-20000 and N2H4 have been discussed in detail. One key fact has been found that the ferrocene concentration has a vital effect on the morphologies of the products. The side-branching process and the oscillation of the concentration have been proposed to illustrate the formation mechanisms of the fractal nanocrystals. In addition, magnetic properties of Fe3O4 fractal nanocrystals have also been detected by a vibrating sample magnetometer, showing relatively high saturation magnetization (Ms) of ca. 78.75 emu/g.

Abstract:MgO thin films were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering with Mg as a target and O-2 as reactive gas, and characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The method of Fourier transformation was used to calculate the fractal dimension of AFM images. The relationship between fractal dimension and sputtering mode was explored. The results show that the calculated fractal dimension D-fc of the film prepared at oxygen partial pressure of 30% is a critical value, corresponding to transition of sputtering mode. The sputtering modes are closely related to metallic and oxide modes respectively when their fractal dimension values are far beyond critical D-fc.

Abstract:The large-scale homogeneous fluorine-doped tin oxide (SnO2:F) thin film was successfully deposited on glass by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) method on an industrial production line. XRD, SEM and TEM were employed to investigate the film morphological and microstructural variation. It was observed for the first time that the as-deposited SnO2:F thin film presented a typical micro-nano structure, of which the micro-sized grains (100-300 nm) were assembled by nano-sized crystallites (< 10 nm). It was found that the post-heating for 20 min at similar to 580 degrees C or above induced splitting phenomenon of the micro-sized polyhedron-like grains into the smaller ones. Meanwhile, the increased grain boundaries due to such process were found to lead a dramatic decrease in the Hall mobility and distinguishable increase in the sheet resistance. Therefore, it was confirmed that such large-scale low-emission glass can serve with good functional properties below 580 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The surface and electronic structure of silver grown on well defined FeO(111), Fe3O4(111) and Fe2O3(0001) films have been in situ studied using various surface analytical techniques. For Ag grown on FeO(111) or Fe2O3(0001) surfaces, the silver Mie plasmon resonance observed at about 3.8eV at initial coverage indicates three dimensional growth mode of silver. Contrarily, no Mie plasmon peak detected for Ag on Fe3O4(111) at initial coverage of Ag suggests a wetting behavior. The main mechanism of Ag growth mode on iron oxide films and the interfacial interaction are discussed. The interfacial information is useful for noble metal–iron oxides system in chemical reactions, e.g. in photocatalysis and biology.

Abstract:Copper‐containing thin films were synthesized by a citrate sol–gel method using ethylene glycol. The evolution of the shape and local atomic structure of the copper‐containing fractal crystallites at different stages of growth was investigated by the combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. A surface morphological study of the deposited film samples was carried out using SEM. It revealed the evolution of the crystallite structures as a function of annealing temperature. To describe this mechanism diffusion‐limiting aggregation and cluster–cluster models were used. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) was applied to show the dynamics of the local atomic structure of Cu ion and the copper oxidation state at different stages of crystallites formation. It was found that at temperatures up to 250 °C the Cu2Cl(OH)3 (atacamite phase) and chelate complex are formed. With temperature increases changes in the local atomic structure as well as in morphology take place and at 500 °C CuO formed. As a result of these processes, the fractal organization of the other level was observed.

Abstract:A series of AgOx thin films were prepared by the DC-magnetron reactive-sputtering method at room temperature under different sputtering power and oxygen to argon ratio conditions. The optical properties of the AgOx films were studied by analysis of the spectroscopic ellipsometry data with the Tauc-Lorentz multi-oscillator model in the 1.5 similar to 4.5-eV photon-energy range. The spectra of absorption, XPS and PL were measured. The results indicate that the AgOx film changes from metallic to dielectric structure with increasing oxygen flux. Under the saturated oxidation condition after annealing, the dominating component will be Ag2O in the film to show indirect interband transitions occurring at about 0.57 eV and 2.43 eV, respectively, that are in agreement with the results of PL measurement and Lorentz analysis.

Abstract:The experimental conditions for photoactivated intermittent fluorescence from nanoscale silver oxide were studied with fluorescence microscopy. Strong fluorescence was observed from the Ag2O particles with size of 10-20 nm excited with both blue and green light. We observed the saturation of photoexcitation with blue light and explained the experimental results using the model of agglomeration of silver atoms to form small clusters and the fluorescence of Ag2 and Ag3 clusters.
Fractal Ag-Aggregates on Silicone Oil Surfaces

Abstract:The growth process of large fractal aggregates formed by diffusion and rotation of silver clusters on sillicone oil surfaces in investigated. Our results indicate that the silver clusters rotate randomly on the liquid substrates and the mean square angle displacement 2> and time difference Δt satisfy the generalized Einstein relation 2>=4DθΔt. The random rotation coefficient Dθ scales with the cluster size S as Dθ∝S－γθ, where γθ＝2.4±0.3. The dependence of the fractal dimension of the aggregates on the deposition rate and aggregate time is also presented.

Abstract:Thermal evaporation technique has been used to produce silver oxide (AgO). The findings demonstrate that the crystal quality of the AgO film was dominated by the thin and sharp peaks at (111) plans. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) confirm that the distribution grains size appears nanostructure and homogeneous in all films. RMS decreased from 6.84 nm to 2.17 nm with thicknesses 200 nm. The surface roughness decreased from 7.82 nm to 3.22 nm. The distribution of grains size appears nanostructured and homogeneous in all films, and a slight decrease in average particle size. The surface displayed that the roughness decreased with the increase in thicknesses. The spectrum fluctuation of their optical constants has been calculated using transmittance and absorption data. In the visible region of the wavelength, all films have a high absorption coefficient with a value of 104 (cm-1 ). According to the optical measurements, the films have a band gap between 1.73 and 1.61 eV. The Extinction coefficient and refractive index drop as film thickness rises.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of metal oxidation processes is critical for maintaining the desired properties of metals and catalysts, as well as for designing advanced materials. In this work, we investigate the electron beam induced oxidation of silver using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The additions of Ag-O columns on {111} and {110} planes were captured with atomic resolution. Interestingly, oscillatory growth on {110} planes was observed, which resulted from the double effect of electron beam irradiation. It was found that not only thermodynamic factors but also kinetic factors played significant roles in morphology evolutions. These results can facilitate the fundamental understanding of the oxidation process of Ag and provide a promising approach for the fabrication of desired nanostructures.
