Abstract:The cyclical-regeneration process of CuBr in a sealed-off laser was analyzed. By adopting controlling the temperature of the tube wall and placing copper powder at the electrodes, the operation life of the sealed-off CuBr laser was prolonged efficiently, attaining 358 h in experiment.

Abstract:A sealed-off CuBr vapour laser with the maximal average output laser power of 20 W was fabricated and investigated. The corresponding efficiency is 1.2% and the specific average output laser power is 123 mW/cm(3) in an active volume of 163 cm(3). The lifetime of the laser is more than 300 hours operating at 12-15 W.

Abstract:Because the dissociated bromine in CuBr lasers has serious effects on the lifetime of CuBr lasers and the stability of the discharged plasma, it is important in long-lived sealed-off CuBr lasers. The adsorption of bromine on the surface of the copper around the electrodes was measured by a transmission electron microscope and an x-ray energy dispersive spectrometer. It was found that the bromine dissociated from the CuBr molecule by collision in the laser discharge plasma is a negative bromine ion; no positive bromine ion existed. On the average, the atomic percentage of the adsorbed bromine is about 20%. The radial distribution of the atomic percentage of bromine around the copper anode is given and has been explained qualitatively.

Abstract:The spectral structure of spontaneous emission of copper atom at 510.6nm and 578.2nm was calculated considering the hyperfine structure of energy levels and the isotope shift. The spectral structure of the 510.6nm and 578.2nm laser lines was measured in a sealed-off CuBr laser tube with periodic refreshment of the neon buffer gas under different work temperature and excited voltage. The spectral structure of the spontaneous emission of copper atom was found to have similar outline with its laser lines. The spectrum of the 510.6nm laser line maintains similar outline with three peaks at various discharging parameters while the spectrum of the 578.2nm laser line is strongly dependent on the reservoir temperature and the discharge voltage.

Abstract:Under consideration of the basic factors such as the level hyperfine structure and isotope split etc., the spectral structures of spontaneous emission of copper atom 578/511nm lines are calculated. A sealed operation CuBr laser with periodical refreshment of the buffer gas are designed and constructed. The 578/511nm spectral structures, produced by CuBr laser at lower Ne buffer gas pressure were measured under different working temperatures and exciting voltages. The spectral structure of spontaneous emission of copper atom 578/511nm lines have multi-peaks similar to their laser spectral structure, but the 578nm laser line isstrongly dependent on the working temperature and the exciting voltage. Some possible reasons are suggested to qualitatively explain the experimental results.

Abstract:The kinetic process of Cu+ UV laser in Ne-CuBr longitudinal pulsed discharge is analyzed and a comprehensive self-consistent physical model is developed. The temporal evolutions of discharge parameters, main particle densities, the electron temperature, and the laser pulse intensity are numerically calculated. The model results illustrate the process of population inversion and the lasing mechanism. Abstract:The parametric optimization of the Ne-CuBr UV laser excited by longitudinal pulsed discharge is analysed by using a self-consistent kinetic model. Consistent characteristics of the optimization process are obtained by comparing with the experimental results. Simulation results show that neon ions come into being along with considerable depletion of the ground-state copper atoms. And the optimization of the discharge tube diameter is the tradeoff between the specific output photon density and the total active volume. Both the optimal neon gas pressure and the optimal reservoir temperature result from the balance between the neon ion density and the ground-state copper atom density to arrive at a maximum of their product.

Abstract:A simple model of temperature field was presented for the Ne-H2-CuBr laser discharge tube, and discharge tube with diaphragms. An analytical expression of the radial temperature distribution in the tube was given. The relation between radial temperature distribution and input power and thermal conductivity of the buffer gas has been described.

Abstract:We describe an unsaturated gain-loss model in regards to colloidal PbSe quantum dot (QD)-doped fiber laser realized previously. Based on experimental observation on the laser, the numerical simulation on the model indicates there exists a pumping threshold that depends on the QD doping concentration. There is a defined range of doping concentration, within which the laser can be generated. Available doping density depends on the fiber length, following an exponential decrease with the increased fiber length. Our model suggests a reasonable lifetime of 100 ns for the upper level of QDs in the background of UV curing adhesive, which is shorter than the lifetime reported in literatures.

Abstract:Considering the hyperfine structure and the isotopic splitting of copper active atomic levels, the temporal behavior of the spectral structure of amplified spontaneous emission at 510.6 nm line was calculated. The spectral line shapes of 510.6 and 578.2 nm laser lines were measured and compared with the calculated results at different experimental configurations, i.e., without cavity mirrors, with the back mirror, and with cavity mirrors. The results of the 578.2 nm line revealed that the mode competition was involved in the formation of laser oscillation.

Abstract:In longitudinal pulse discharge excited Sr+, Ca+ recombination laser, the discharge current pulse waveform of three different discharge circuits were measured and analyzed respectively. It is found that using non-symmetrical Blumlein circuit, the after low oscillation of the discharge current pulse can be effectively eliminated. The average output power and single pulse energy of the laser can be increased.

Abstract:Based on the kinetic process of UV Cu+ laser in longitudinal nanosecond-pulsed discharge, the necessary condition for the population inversion between the upper and lower laser levels has been obtained. The experimental phenomenon that the laser power increases rapidly with the decrease of the discharge tube aperture has been analyzed theoretically. It is pointed out that the radiation trapping of lower laser level could be restrained effectively by reducing the tube radius, resulting in the increase of depopulation rate of lower laser level and the laser power.

Abstract:Copper bromide vapor laser is the most successful sealed-off version of a plenty of copper vapor lasers launched, studied and produced for the last half of century. Being first reported in 1975, it became the leading and long-lasting R&D&T project followed by the Laboratory of metal vapor lasers in Institute of solid state physics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences ever since. This manuscript gathers major research & development results of the last studies unfolding unexplored and unknown optical, electric and thermal properties of CuBr laser held in the Laboratory of metal vapor lasers during foregoing 20+ years. Some of these new aftermaths are record-high power, efficiency and lifetime of CuBr laser; comprehensive studies of energy dissipation and dynamics of the electric field of CuBr laser; achievement of high-brightness diffraction-limited throughout-pulse emission of master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) CuBr laser and high focusability of CuBr laser emission low-affected by beam profile intensity variations.

Abstract:The phenomena of mode quenching and locking in a longitudinal discharge CuBr laser have been observed simultaneously by using two types of multimirror cavities. Multiple mode-locking pulse trains at a frequency equal to a multiple of the fundamental longitudinal mode spacing have been obtained. The highest repetition rate is upto 440 MHz.

Abstract:A kinetic model is developed to describe the Ne-CuBr UV laser action in a longitudinal pulsed discharge. The influence of main parameters on the laser output characteristics is numerically calculated. The dependence of laser intensity on the buffer gas pressure, the operation temperature and the tube radius is found out and the experimental results are explained quantitatively. The modelling results can provide a reference to improve the laser output characteristics.

Abstract:A self-consistent physical model describing the kinetic process of the longitudinal pulsed discharge-excited copper vapor laser was established, and numerical solutions of the model were obtained. The terminating mechanisms of the copper vapor laser pulse have been further analyzed according to the simulation results. It is shown that the important factors resulting in the termination of laser pulse are the processes of stimulated emission transition, the electron impact excitation of the lower laser level and the depopulation of the upper laser level to the higher excitation levels by electron collisions.

Abstract:The experimental results of controlling CuBr laser modes by using an injection seeding technique were reported. The single longitudinal mode CuBr laser pulses was amplified and the narrowing-linewidth copper laser radiation with an average power of more than 100 mW was obtained. The injection seeding process in short-pulse high-gain lasers was analyzed and the experimental results in the injection seeded CuBr laser was discussed.

Abstract:<p>This study mainly discussed the effect of spatial confinement on the line emission of laser-excited breakdown spectroscopy with cylindrical cavity. A Q-switched nanosecond laser ablated Cu target to generate plasma. When the cylindrical cavity was presented, the significant enhancement in the spectral emission was observed. And, the time-resolved spectra without spatial confinement and with different cylindrical cavities were measured. The delay time for the spectral enhancement increased as the cavity diameter increased. We also changed the Y-scale of time-resolved emission intensity plot from linear to logarithmic, so two spectral enhancement events with the delay time were observed due to the two compressions of the plasma by the reflection and re-reflection of the shockwave from the inner surface of the confinement cavity. Also, the calculated time-resolved electron temperatures showed the temperature increase events similar to that of the time-resolved emission.</p>
