Abstract:Cu-W-C micron powders were long-term ( >= 60 h) milled and hot-pressed in order to obtain copper matrix reinforced by in-situ nanoscale tungsten carbides. Both powder and sintered composite were characterized using various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and assessed for hardness and electrical conductivity to investigate the ball milling time effect on the structural evolutions and properties of Cu-WC. Longer-term ball milling found the refinement and homogenization of nano-Cu and nano-W in milled powders, which enlarged W and C contact probability and promoted WC formation accordingly. At 120 h milling, the sintered material was composed of WC micro areas and Cu-rich composite areas where the nanosized and ultrafine WC coexisted. This better microstructure increased hardness by 42% only with a small reduction in electrical properties compared to the case of 60 h milling.
Synthesis and Characterizations of Nanocrystalline Wc-Co Composite Powders by A Unique Ball Milling Process

Abstract:In order to explore the high efficiency of fabricating nanocrystalline WC-Co composite powders, this paper presented, a unique high energy ball milling process with variable rotation rate and repeatious circulation, by which nanocrystalline WC-10Co-0.8VC-0.2Cr(3)C(2) (wt pct) composite powders with mean grain size of 25 nm were prepared in 32 min, and the quantity of the powders for a batch was as much as 800 grams. The as-prepared powders were analyzed and characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results show that high energy ball milling with variable rotation rates and repeatious circulation could be used to produce nanocrystalline WC-Co powder composites with high efficiency. The compositions of the powders, meet its specifications with low impurity content. The mean grain size decreases, lattice distortion and system energy increase with increasing the milling time. The morphology of nanocrystalline WC-Co particles displays dominantly sphere shape and their particle sizes are all lower than 80 nm. The eutectic temperature of the nanocrystalline WC-10Co-0.8VC-0.2Cr(3)C(2) composites is about 1280degreesC.
Preparation of Ultra-Fine WC-Co Cermet and Its Wear Behavior

Abstract:Coating of cobalt on surface of ultra-fine WC particle to form WC-Co composite powder was carried out by low temperature electroless plating.The WC-Co composite powder was sintered into a new type of ultra-fine WC-Co cemented carbide(NYG).The mechanical properties of the NYG were tested.The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was used to examined the morphology and microstructure of the samples.The wear tests were performed on a pin-on-disc wear device.The results show that Co,binder phase,distributes along the grain boundary of WC and forms network structure to restrain the grain growth.The bend strength,fracture toughness and hardness of NYG are greatly improved.The plastic deformation and spalling of some WC particles are predominated in the wear process.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying of a powder mixture of elemental Al and graphite has been performed in a high-energy ball mill. The structural evolution has been characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The carbide Al4C3 is first formed as an intermediate product. Further milling leads to destabilization of Al4C3. It is proposed that destabilization of Al4C3 is induced by the accumulated defects and the high pressure due to collision of the balls. Balling milling of the elemental AlC powder mixture finally results in a f.c.c. solid solution with a carbon content up to 23 at%. Whereas an amorphous phase is formed in the composition range of 28–50 at% C.

Abstract:The powder of nanostructured WC-10Co-0.8VC-0.2Cr 2C 3 cemented carbides is prepared by high energy ball milling process, and then is treated by rapid hot pressing sintered to form the composite block, the microstructure of the composite is observed and investigated by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy. In the microstructures, the binder phase is netlike dispersive and embedded in the gaps of polygonal WC grains. The cloud like nanosized precipitates inside WC grains are found in the microstructures of nanostructured WC-Co cemented carbides, and the nanoprecipitates are the cobalt-rich phase, they are formed by the mechanism of nanocrystalline WC-Co composites structure destabilization, the phase transformation behavior induced by thermal and pressure fields.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline tungsten powder prepared by high-energy ball milling was consolidated without pressure and with pressure, respectively. The change of the particle size and morphology, and the relative density of the sintering compact as a function of consolidation temperature has been studied by SEM,TEM and X-ray diffraction. The sinterability of nanocrystalline tungsten powder is compared with that of coarse-grained tungsten powder. It is found that the usual layered structure does not develop during the high - energy bah milling of brittle materials. This work demonstrates that the sinterability of nanocrystalline powder is far superior to that of a coarse-grained one.

Abstract:Mechanical alloying is the most popular processing method for preventing nanoparticle agglomeration in metal matrix nanocomposites and is one of the primary methods for preparing high-entropy alloy (HEA) powders. In this study, HEA matrix nanocomposite powders with a diffuse distribution of tungsten carbide are prepared by adding WC during the preparation of FeCoCrNiAl HEA through high-energy ball milling by extending the ball-milling time. After 10 h of ball milling, a body-centered cubic (BCC)-phase HEA is obtained, and WC particles are observed to have adhered to the surface of the HEA matrix powder. With a further increase in the ball-milling time, the WC particles continuously fracture and adhere to the matrix powder. During repeated plastic deformation, fracture, and cold welding of the HEA powder, the BCC phase gradually transforms into a face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, and the WC microfine powder is gradually and uniformly dispersed in the HEA matrix. The dynamic process between repeated cold welding and fracture ensures a stable powder size and inhibits the agglomeration of WC particles. Simultaneously, the intrinsic properties of the HEA lead to a gradual spheroidization of the composite powder. A final FCC and BCC biphasic HEA-matrix WC nanocomposite spherical powder is produced.

Abstract:The effect of particle size and high-energy ball milling time on microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-10Co cemented carbides with plate-like WC grains were studied using a scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and mechanical properties tests. The results show that coarsening W particle size seemed to be beneficial for the increase of the plate-like WC content due to the easy acquirement of the thin W flake with high-density defects. Additionally, increasing the ball milling time could first increase the content of plate-like WC grains, and then decrease with 96 h ball milling. The high amount of defects and activity of fine W particles from fracturing with long ball milling time could enhance the formation of plate-like WC grains. However, the oxygen content could be increased with the excess ball milling time, which reduced the content of liquid Co and thus impeded the formation of plate-like WC grains. As the content of plate-like WC grains increased, the intergranular fracture gradually transformed into the main fracture mode. Additionally, crack bridging and crack path deflection could be seen in the alloy with plate-like WC grains. The high fracture surface area and energy required for crack propagation could improve the strength of WC-10Co cemented carbides with plate-like WC.

Abstract:The W-Ni-Fe nanocomposite powders with the composition of 91.16W6.56Ni2.26Fe and 95W5Ni were produced by mechanical alloying. The mechanical alloying process parameters, such as milling speed and milling time, were varied in order to investigate their influence on the microstructural evolution of mechanically alloyed powders. The phases, alloying characteristics, grain size and lattice distortion of these powders were determined and discussed. The results show that mechanical alloying could produce an ultrafine composite powder in which large lattice distortion, supersaturated solid solution, amorphous phase occurred due to the fast diffusion induced by high density of defects, such as twins, dislocations and nanograin boundaries. Higher ball-mill energy is benefit for amorphization, ultrafine grain and lattice distortion, and the grain size could reach to 25 nm by ball milling for 20 h with 350 r/min. Changing routes of powder size and powder morphologies are different with the different inputted ball-mill energy.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline ZnxMn1−xFe2O4 (x=0.1–0.9) powders were prepared by high-energy ball milling. Their structure and magnetic properties of Mn–Zn ferrites with various Zn content were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and magnetic property measurement system in this paper. The XRD results indicate that the formed particles with associated strains are ultrafine in diameter of about 18nm. The lattice parameters increase proportionally with the increase of Mn content. The magnetic studies on the milled nanocrystalline ZnxMn1−xFe2O4 samples show that the ultrafine zinc ferrites exhibit net magnetization with a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. The clear understanding of this anomalous behaviour of MnZn ferrites in the nanocrystalline state needs to be studied further.

Abstract:Nanostructured WC–Co cemented carbides, combining high hardness and high toughness, are expected to be widely applicable. In this study, nanocrystalline WC–10Co–0.8VC–0.2Cr3C2 (wt.%) composite powders, whose average grain size is bout 25 nm, were fabricated by a unique ball milling technique with variable rotation rate and repetitious circulation in 32 min. The high energy ball milling process was optimized and the as-prepared nanocrystalline powders were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Furthermore, a low temperature, high heating rate, short soaking time and pressure sintering technique, that is, rapid hot pressing sintering, was used in the sintering process, by which nanostructured WC–Co cemented carbides with mean grain size of 250 nm were produced. The material exhibits high hardness of 93.6 HRA and transverse rapture strength of 2746 MPa. In the sintered composites, the distribution of elements W, Co, V and Cr is homogeneous, and it is small quantity of miropores and extraordinary coarse tungsten carbide phase that negatively influence the transverse rapture strength of nanostructured WC–Co cemented carbides.

Abstract:MoSi2–CoNiCrAlY nanocomposite feedstock was prepared by high energy ball milling starting from a mixture of 50wt.% MoSi2 and 50wt.% CoNiCrAlY powders. The microstructure and thermal stability were studied by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser particle size analyzer and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The results show that only grain refinement occurs in MoSi2–CoNiCrAlY powders during the whole milling process. The milled powders have nanocrystalline structure composed of nano-sized hard MoSi2 phase uniformly dispersed in CoNiCrAlY binder phase matrix. After milling for 30h, both the average particle size and grain size of the powders are almost stabilized. The prepared nano-composite feedstock exhibits spherical morphology, uniform particle size and good thermal stability, which is expected to be used directly for thermal spraying hard coating after sieving slightly.

Abstract:Nanostructured-W- La2O3 composite powder was prepared by the high energy ball milling, or mechanical alloying (MA). Serially W-La2O3 electrode materials were fabricated by hot pressed sintering in vacuum,. In each case the nanostructural evolutions was observed as function of milling time and sintering temperature using SEM, XRD and TEM. The results show that the sintering densification depends on nanosize particle rearrangement rasther than conventional diffusion. The enhanced sinterability of MA W-La2O3 composite powder is attributed to their ultra-fine and homogeneously mixed state, high internal strain, as well as the sintering activation by impurity elements.

Abstract:Ni60-TiB2 MMCs (metal matrix composites) nanostructured feedstock was synthesized by high-energy ball-milling method using Ni60 and TiB2 powders with argon as protection. The milled powders and coating were characterized and analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy spectrometer and laser scattering for particle size analysis. The results show that after 20 h milling at room temperature, the average grain size and microstrain of the as-milled powders are 38 nm and 0.237% respectively with the hard phase nano TiB2 dispersedly and uniformly distributed on the NiCr matrix. Most of the powders exhibit spherical morphology which is expected to have good fluidity during HVOF spraying.

Abstract:The ultrafine grained WC-Ni3Al cemented carbides were prepared by ball milling and low pressure sintering method.The effects of Ni3Al content on the microstructure and properties of ultrafine grained WC based cemented carbides were investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscope,mechanical and corrosion properties testing.The results show that increasing the content of Ni3Al can gradually decrease the hardness and compress strength and increase the fracture toughness of the ultrafine WC based cemented carbide,then,the corrosion resistance of the ultrafine grained WC based cemented carbide obviously decreases.

Abstract:In this study, toughening of WC-Co composite prepared by amorphous-crystallization method was investigated. Co-rich nanoparticles, a Co(W,C) solid solution, were incorporated into the WC matrix through the process integrating crystallization of amorphous Co 2 W 4 C powder and its in-situ reaction with carbon. The microstructural evolution of the ceramic-metal composite during fabrication was studied in detail. Owing to the interactions between Co-rich nanoparticles coherent with the WC matrix and the dislocations and stacking faults inside WC grains, the composite exhibited high hardness and strength combined with exceptional fracture toughness. The mechanisms for the synergistic improvement of mechanical properties of the composite were disclosed. This study presents the novel preparation of WC-Co composite, characterized by the incorporation of Co-rich nanoparticles into the WC matrix via an amorphous-crystallization technique, yielding exceptional fracture toughness.

Abstract:CBN ternary compounds with nano-structure have been prepared directly by a mechanical alloying technique at room temperature. The characteristic and formation mechanism of CBN are discussed. The nano-sheets and nano-layered rods of CBN are observed according to the morphology of scanning electron microscopy. It is substantiated that the microstructure of CBN was closely related to the ball milling time and the ball milling condition according to the results of X-ray diffraction of CBN with different ball milling time. After ball milling for 60 and 90h, some new diffraction peaks are observed, which implies that some unknown microstructure and phase separation are induced in the reactive ball milling of CBN. The results of XRD are in accordance with that of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of CBN before ball milling and after ball milling for 90h.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, WC-CoWC coatings were produced by HVOF spraying using bimodal-structured WC-Co powder with both micro- and nano-sized WC particles. Due to the melting characteristics of the powder during spraying, the microsized particles are retained in the deposit, but the nanosized particles dissolve into the Co matrix, forming a Co-W-C ternary phase. Compared to coatings sprayed from conventional WC-CoWC powder, the bimodal coatings are more resistant to corrosion and wear and are comparable in microhardness.

Abstract:The mechanical alloying of Fe–Co–Zr–B mixed powder has been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other test methods. The results show that the Fe–Co–Zr–B nanocrystalline alloy can be produced by mechanical alloying from the elements powders by ball milling of 50 h. With the increase in Co content, the grain size increases correspondingly, and the size of composite particles decreases continuously. The mechanical alloying process of Fe–Co–Zr–B alloy system is slowed down by the addition of Co.
