Abstract:Conventional porcelain and glass insulators have hydrophilic surfaces, so they have poor contamination flashover resistance. Silicone rubber composite insulators have hydrophobic surfaces and their hydrophobicity can migrate into the surface contaminant layers, so their contamination flashover resistance is excellent. Up to now, the contamination flashover mechanism of conventional insulators has been studied in detail, but the study on composite ones is seldom. In this paper, the flashover mechanism of composite insulators was analyzed and their DC contamination flashover model with a flashover channel constituted by many series short arcs and narrow water ribbons was put forward. The model reveals that the cathode and anode drop of short arcs and the high resistance of water ribbons cause the high flashover voltage of composite insulators, and it also reflects the characteristic of this kind of insulator that the current is low and the voltage is high just before the flashover.

Abstract:Composite insulators have superior performance on prevent flashovers, but there is no agreement reached for silicone rubber surface flashover characteristics and mechanism. In order to study the arc characteristics on the silicone rubber surface, in this paper, silicone rubber plane was taken as the research object, its arc in the arc characteristics under dc high voltage electric field were studied.The study found that the volt-ampere characteristic of surface arc on silicon rubber material remains to be descending type, with the arc constant A of 65.7, more close to the situation of air ionization where A=60-80. The propagation mechanism of silicon rubber surface is different from that of porcelain and glass surface in nature, in which more air ionization may take part in. With different arc length, the electric field distribution and the E-I characteristic of the arc are different. The arc characteristic will also change with the hydrophobic of silicon rubber plane. The change of silicone rubber surface hydrophobic should be concerned to better guide the implement of anti-pollution measurements.

Abstract:The faults of composite insulator have been divided into three kinds including pollution flashover, lightening flashover and reason unknown flashover. Some flashovers have occurred in the field but the mechanism of flashover is still unknown. This paper presents experimental results of flashover of polymer insulators caused by foreign bodies. It was found that the nonuniform voltage distribution and the dropping down foreign bodies may cause flashovers. In this paper, in addition to experiments, the voltage distribution is analyzed using the finite element method. The factors influenced the flashover phenomenon is thus studied.

Abstract:The use of room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber (SIR) coatings for improving the contamination performance of existing ceramic insulation has become popular. RTV SIR coatings work on the principle of providing a high surface resistance even in the presence of moisture and contamination, hence, limiting the leakage current to harmless levels. This paper deals with the flashover mechanism and performance of contaminated RTV SIR coated insulators under wet conditions. Four types of profiles of insulators with RTV SIR coating were evaluated. The withstanding voltage and flashover tests were performed on these insulators. The equivalent salt deposit density and the non-soluble deposit density were measured. Based on the analysis of leakage current monitored, the flashover mechanism of RTV SIR coated insulators was proposed in this paper.

Abstract:Flashover performance of composite insulator is restricted by material hydrophobicity and hydrophobicity transfer.The influence of environmental factors and component of non-soluble materials in contamination on hydrophobicity of heat vulcanized rubber was analyzed.Quantitative contrast experiment to study the relationship between DC flashover performance of composite insulators and component of non-soluble materials as well as hydrophobicity time was carried out.The test results show that,the increasing percentage of Kieselgur leads to the quicker rate of hydrophobicity transfer,as a result of which,the contact angle turns larger,and all these further contribute to the higher DC flashover voltage.The result of this paper can be taken as a reference for hydrophobicity transfer analysis of silicone rubber,and as the foundation of establishment of artificial pollution DC test standard of composite insulators.

Abstract:We focused on the flashover mechanism on wet contaminated composite insulator when bird streamer dropping by the insulator using iron wires,and investigated the low temperature nature of silicon rubber.We think that the contamination layer on the insulator may be saturated when unexplained flashover typically occurs.The experiments on 110kV composite insulators were conducted in the laboratory to simulate the flashover process using iron wires.The results show that foreign bodies with length of 50~70 cm can cause the flashover on 110 kV composite insulators,and videos show that it is combination of surface discharge and air breakdown,while flashover won't occur on clean insulator in the same condition.Then simulation model is set up to investigate the mechanism of the flashover.It is believed that the electric field of the foreign body induces the flashover,and then pollution flashover occurs.Finally,these studies are used to explain unexplained flashover.

Abstract:The composite crossarm insulator differs greatly from the suspension insulator in structure and arrangement. This study aims to determine the pollution flashover characteristics of composite crossarm insulators under different voltage grades. Four types of AC composite crossarm insulators with diameters ranging from 100 mm to 450 mm are subjected to artificial pollution test, and then the effects of the surface hydrophobicity state of silicone rubber, core diameter, umbrella structure, arrangement, and insulation distance on the pollution flashover voltage of the composite crossarm insulators are analyzed. Under the pollution grade 0.2/1.0 mg/cm2 and voltage grade from 66 kV to 1000 kV, if the silicone rubber surface changes from HC5 to HC6, the pollution flashover voltage of the composite crossarm insulator will increase by 13.5% to 21.0% compared with the hydrophilic surface. If the core diameter changes from 100 mm to 300 mm, the pollution flashover voltage gradient decreases with the increase in core diameter; if the core diameter changes from 300 mm to 450 mm, the pollution flashover voltage gradient increases with core diameter. Under the same insulation height and core diameter, the umbrella structure will have a certain impact on pollution flashover voltage by up to 1.7% to 5.4%. Under the horizontal arrangement, the pollution flashover voltage can increase by 10.5% to 12.1% compared with that under the vertical arrangement. Under the hydrophilic surface and weak hydrophobicity state, the pollution flashover voltage has a linear relationship with the insulation distance. The above results can provide a reference for the structural design and optimization of the composite crossarm insulator.

Abstract:Polymer insulators are reported to be contaminated by algae in tropical and subtropical climates around the world. Here, the biological contaminates were sectorial distributed on the insulator surface, stretching from the edge of the shed to the interior section near the core. The radial growth ratio and axial length of the algal column was varying under different environmental conditions. To explore the flashover characteristics under these conditions, the triangle plate model was established, in which algal colonization varied in radial growth ratio and algal column length quantitatively, and the inorganic pollutants were divided into three pollution degrees. The results showed that the increasing algal distribution gradually decreased the flashover voltage, whereas when the algal column was too slender, the flashover voltage increased. Meanwhile, the arc tended to elongate within the bio-contaminated area, and the flashover voltage significantly decreased when the algal column nearly covered the full specimen. Furthermore, surface conductivity and pollutant resistance were theoretically deduced from the Obenaus model, the results of which coincided with the calculated value from the flashover measurements. The change in discharge characteristics was attributed to the loss of hydrophobicity. This research could provide valuable information for the maintenance of bio-contaminated insulators in transmission lines of power systems.
Degradation Progress of Silicon Rubber Surface Properties under DC Contamination Flashover

Abstract:To study the variation of surface properties under DC contamination discharge,focusing on three parts,i.e.,the loss and recovery of hydrophobicity,development of leakage current,and the characteristic of the substance generated,we experimentally researched the silicone rubber(SR) using inclined plane method.The experimental results showed that the development process of contamination discharge were through four stages,which were defined as random arcs along SR surface,damage within concentrated area,formation of hydrophobic substances,and the extinction of arcs.The hydrophobicity distribution along the SR surface was distinctive at each stage,meanwhile the peak value of leakage current changed with the variation of the surface damage.It was observed that a kind of hydrophobic substance was generated with the combustion of the DC arcs.This white powder-like substance was found on SR of several manufacturers,and it affected the location and duration of arcs.After the tests,the damaged SR samples were laid in the incubator for 48 hours,then the hydrophobicity of the damaged area was measured.It was found that the recovery of hydrophobicity of this area was quite good and the contact angle even exceeded the original level of the SR samples.

Abstract:For an extensive understanding of the pollution flashover mechanism on hydrophobic surfaces, a series of experiments were designed to investigate the relationship between hydrophobicity, pollution severity and pollution withstand property of polymer insulators. Rain tests with the conductivity 100 mu S/cm to 100000 mu S/cm were conducted on the silicone rubber insulators presenting various hydrophobicity statuses. It is found that the electric conductivity and accumulating status of water droplets or zones on the hydrophobic surface is tied closely to the sequence flashover voltage, even in the case of completely hydrophobicity. Actually, the accumulating status and the conductivity of water droplets on the contaminated polymer insulators depend both on the hydrophobicity and on the pollution severity. It suggests that the pollution flashover voltage on the hydrophobic surface relate not only to the hydrophobicity but also to the pollution severity. Based on the results, pollution flashover mechanism on the hydrophobic surface is discussed.

Abstract:This paper introduces the flashover characteristics of polluted silicone rubber plate samples with different hydrophobic properties. By virtue of quantitative brushing method, samples were polluted by controlling hydophobicity transfer time to obtain different hydrophobic properties . The maximum value of droplet area on the pollution layer stood for the state of surface hydrophobicity. The impacts of hydrophobicity on flashover voltage, pollution resistance and the development of arc were studied. Test results show that flashover voltages of samples increase with the improvement of surface hydrophobicity. A correlation exists between flashover voltage and the maximum value of droplet area. However, deviation increases from hydrophilic state to hydrophobic state. The morphology of droplets has a great effect on arc development. When drops form continuous water film, the number of arc paths is limited and the value of flashover voltage is low. However, when the drops on the surface are spherical and scattered, discharge areas are scattered s and the flashover voltages are high. According to the results of flashover tests and the different patterns of droplets, hydrophilic surface HC7, is subdivided into HC7A, HC7B, HC7C and HC7D respectively. Despite very unobvious hydrophobicity of HC7B, flashover voltages of samples with HC7B are obviously higher than those with totally hydrophilic states, such as HC7C and HC7D. Therefore, if the configuration structure is designed according to the flashover voltage related to the HC7B state, structure height of composite insulators can be shortened with the ensured safety.

Abstract:This paper attempts to address the issue of serious insulator string partial discharge activity and flashover resulted from severe contaminant accumulation of insulators on a 220 kV transmission line in coastal areas during winter when the rain is sparse and heavy contamination accumulates over time. Samples of silicone composite insulators, glass insulator with RTV coating and ceramic station insulator are tested in a series of experiments including ESDD and NSDD measurement, hydrophobicity classification, the measurement of static contact angle, TGA and FTIR analysis. Taking the terrain of the transmission line into consideration, it probes into the mechanism of contaminant accumulation and flashover of insulators in heavily polluted coastal areas. A conclusion has been made that the high salt deposit on the surface of the insulators resulted from peculiar terrain and the dampening effect on hydrophobicity transfer characteristic of silicone composite material lower the flashover voltage of silicone composite insulators and ceramic or glass insulators with RTV coatings leading to severe partial discharge activity and flashovers during dry winter. Finally it sums up the lessons in regards to this problem and proposes appropriate solutions.

Abstract:The negative contamination flashover voltages of porcelain insulators are lower than the positive ones, and this phenomenon is called polarity effect. Silicone rubber composite insulators have been extensively accepted in the region of external insulation, but up to now, it is not clear yet whether their DC contamination flashovers have polarity effect. In this paper, the polarity effect of DC contamination flashovers of the porcelain insulator is analyzed, and it is thought that those metal hardwares on the porcelain insulator string cause the polarity effect. Each composite insulator only has two hardwares and many short arcs can form in series on it before the flashover, so these arcs are non polarity ones and cause the non polarity effect of the composite insulator.

Abstract:Some improvement on the icing flashover test procedures by taking into account the combined influences of the heavy ice accumulation was made. The test results demonstrated that the icing flashover voltages of the composite insulators with secondary contamination gave considerably lower values than the other two types of flashover voltages, namely the contamination flashover voltage obtained in the conventional clean-fog and the icing flashover voltage without secondary contamination, all the insulators being pre-contaminated with the same degree of equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD).

Abstract:Composite insulators have been widely used in power system since 1970s. However, silicon rubber insulators at high altitude and in strong ultraviolet radiation condition have an exponentially increasing failure rate because of the aging failure. Meanwhile, silicone rubber insulators are not allowed to be stampeded on, which is inconvenience for installation and maintenance. A new type of insulator has been designed, which is accessible for climbing, and is adapted to the harsh climate and environment in Northwest China. Hard composite insulators are made from hydrophobicity cycloaliphatic epoxy resin material (HCEP) using advanced technology. In this paper, experiments on material properties has been carried out, which shows that HCEP material has good hydrophobicity and hydrophobic migration performance. Such material of hard composite insulator also has better resistance to electrical erosion and tracking than conventional silicone rubber material. Some characteristics have been compared with the regular insulators in flashover voltage gradient. Test result shows that cycloaliphatic epoxy insulator has better anti-pollution-flashover performance, satisfying the relevant anti-pollution-flashover standards.

Abstract:except from the two basic and conventional contamination accumulation modes, the common slow solid mode and the rapid liquid mode, there is another kind of rapid contamination accumulation mode which is even easier to cause the pollution-flashover. It is related to human activities, such as burning straw and setting off firecrackers, or natural factors as forest fire and acid rain. Those factors result in the weather condition of high conductivity and high humidity, due to whom the rapid contamination accumulation is added to the normal one. In this paper, the relationship between flashover voltage and the fog conductivity is researched, by doing artificial polluted tests using porcelain insulators of XP-70. Contrast to the process of the pollution's getting wet under the clean fog, the variation characteristics of flashover voltage under the high conductivity fog is systemically studied. It is pointed out that the high conductivity fog decreases flashover voltage, which is more notable on low salt deposit. After studying the changing law of the flashover voltage under different fog conductivity and salt deposit, the relational expression among them was obtained. According to the local meteorological environment, the warning model was revised, by using the expression. It also can be decided if the insulation configuration should be improved.

Abstract:This study investigated the relationship between the surface inclination angle of contaminated silicone rubber and pollution flashover voltage. Moreover, a model of water droplet collision and wetting on the surface of contaminated silicone rubber under different inclination angles was developed, which revealed that the pollution flashover voltage varies because of gravity‐induced variations in the wetting state of the surface of contaminated silicone rubber under different inclination angles. V‐shaped composite insulator strings exhibit excellent resistance to pollution and wind deviation, resulting in their widespread use in transmission lines. The correlation between inclination angle of the shed surface and pollution flashover voltage can reflect the pollution flashover characteristics of V‐shaped composite insulator strings. Therefore, the relationship between inclination angle and pollution flashover voltage was studied through artificial pollution testing methods, and the relationship between inclination angle and degree of wetting was studied using the method of adding water to increase weight. The results of this study indicated that as the inclination angle increased within the range of 0°–180°, the degree of wetting on the surface of contaminated silicone rubber gradually decreased, whereas the pollution flashover voltage continuously increased. A model of water droplet collision and wetting on the surface of contaminated silicone rubber at different inclination angles was established. This model revealed that the gravity‐induced difference in the wetting states of the surface of contaminated silicone rubber under different inclination angles was responsible for the variation in pollution flashover voltages, with the maximum variation being 116.52%. The results of this study can inform the design and operation of V‐shaped composite insulators.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel approach for risk assessment of the outdoor polluted insulators is presented to predict dry band-arcing and flashover. Risk evaluation of the dry-band arcing and flashover are represented using leakage current (LC) behavior in order to understand pollution behavior of the pre-flashover conditions. Critical indexes of the dry-band arcing and flashover are extracted based on the presented risk assessment model using wavelet transform (WT). Then, the developed critical indexes are used for prediction of the operation risk of the composite insulators. In addition, the occurrence probabilities of the dry band arcing and flashover are calculated based on the analysis of critical indexes. Several sensitivity parameters including pollution level, wetting rate and geometry specification are considered in the presented model. Validation results show that risk of the insulator's service can be correlated to the represented critical indexes. The proposed approach can be adopted as an online monitoring tool in order to avoid pollution flashover of the outdoor insulators.

Abstract:It is usually seen that DC flashover voltage of the water droplet on the surface of silicone rubber (SIR) composite insulator is lower than AC flashover voltage. It is necessary to study the mechanisms and influencing factors of the surface properties. In this article, experiments are performed to study the moving processes of the water droplet and the influences of its dynamic behaviours on flashover voltage under DC/AC electric field. Besides, an electrohydrodynamic coupling method is employed to establish the simulating model. Moreover, the theoretical physical model is established to reveal the mechanisms of dynamic behaviours of a droplet. It is indicated that the simulation results are in good consistency with the experimental data. The elongation behaviours of a droplet on the surface of a composite insulator can influence the homogeneity of the electric field distribution along the sample's surface. It is shown that the different dynamic behaviours and flashover performances for a single water droplet on the SIR surface are both affected by the volume of the droplet and the type of voltage applied.

Abstract:In order to understand the effect of liquid droplets on the discharge of composite insulators, the discharge experiment of silicone rubber with water droplets attached to the surface was carried out in an artificial fog chamber. By measuring flashover voltage and taking discharge pictures at the same time, the relationship between flashover voltage and water droplet on silicone rubber surface was analyzed, and the influence of water droplet quantity, distance between water droplet, water droplet radius and water droplet conductivity on the flashover voltage of composite insulator was studied. The effect of water drop on the surface electric field of silicone rubber and the relationship between the surface electric field and flashover voltage were analyzed by using finite element analysis software. The results show that the flashover voltage is less than dry lightning voltage when there is water droplet on the surface of silicone rubber. The flashover voltage decreases with the increase of the number of water droplet, the decrease of water droplet spacing, the increase of water droplet radius and the increase of water droplet conductivity.
