Abstract:The principle of Lyot depolarizer is discussed in this paper by using concise method. Several depolarizers have been fabricated with quasi-rectangle polarization maintaining fiber. The parameters of the depolarizers were measured by two methods. The depolarizers have been used in fiber optic gyros.

Abstract:The dispersion degree of polarization, a new definition of the depolarization degree of partially polarized beams, is first proposed, to the best of our knowledge, to measure the performance of fiber depolarizers. First, the description of the polarization based on the Poincaré sphere is introduced. Then, the modified Delaunay triangulation algorithm is introduced, and the calculation formula of the dispersion degree of polarization is given based on this algorithm. The experimental device was set up, and the dispersion degree of polarization of the depolarized light after the fiber depolarizer was measured to be 47.3%. The components and proportions of polarization in the depolarized light were also obtained. Compared with the degree of polarization, the dispersion degree of polarization can quantitatively analyze the light polarization evaluation in the time dimension and provide a numerical reference for improving the depolarizer, thus increasing the fiber sensor's accuracy.

Abstract:An additive nonreciprocal phase error associated with magnetic field must be generated in Fiber-optic depolarized gyro, which the environment magnetic field has an effect, Faraday effect, on the polarized light that propagates in the imperfect single -mode fiber. Based on monochromatic light, theory derivation and analysis of the whole gyro system that is resulted from radial magnetic field is introduced. The emulation result and the experiment result is given. And the method to reduce the Faraday nonreciprocal phase error resulted from the radical magnetic field is put forward.

Abstract:The mechanism that magnetic influences the Fiber-optic gyro is analyzed.Based on monochromatic light,the specific formula is deducted with Jones Matrix.The formula expresses that the perfect Lyot depolarizers in Fiber-optic depolarized gyro(Dep-I-FOG) can still be affected by the axial magnetic field,and this may result in Faraday nonreciprocal phase error to gyro.This axial magnetic field is parallel to the winding direction of the depolarizers.The emulation result that the phase error varies with the twist rate of the polarization maintaining fiber(PMF) is given,and the test result in the axial magnetic field is written out,too.The emulation shows that the depolarizer with twist can generate Faraday nonreciprocal phase error.And the test result indicates that the axial magnetic field acted on the depolarizers decreases the bias precision of Dep-I-FOG.The main method to reduce the Faraday nonreciprocal phase error resulted from the axial magnetic field acted on the depolarizers is put forward.The method is that each section PMF's twist rate of the two depolarizers φ should tend to 0.

Abstract:The bias precision of depolarized fiber optic gyro(De-FOG)is decided by the performance of Lyot depolarizers directly.So how to evaluate the Lyot depolarizer becomes very important during the project of FOG.With the limit of PMF welding machine's precision currently,the angle 45° of Lyot depolarizer must be jointed several times.Further more,the conventional evaluating method is to test the bias stability for long time,so the efficiency is very low.It is put forward that the accessional nonreciprocal phase error in Twin-De-FOG is magnified by the application of enlarging the axial magnetic field which is perpendicular to the surface of fiber loop and that then the gyro's bias stability is detected in a short time.Compared with the conventional evaluation methods,the test efficiency of the new method enhances thirty-five times when detecting the 45° angle error of Lyot depolarizer.And the 45° angle error which can be detected is less than 0.01°.

Abstract:Based on monochromatic light,the specific formula that the fiber-optic depolarized gyro is sensitivity to the axial magnetic,which is perpendicular to the endface of the fiber loop,is deducted by use of Jones matrix.Theory derivation about single fiber loop and two symmetrical fiber loops is introduced,respectively.The emulation result is given.And the new technique is put forward too,that it is the two-symmetrical fibers loops to decrease axial magnetic sensitivity.Compared to the single fiber loop,the two-symmetrical fibers loops whose degree of dissymmetry is 1% can decrease the axial magnetic sensitivity to not less than 3‰.

Abstract:Polarization controlling is crucial to increase the accuracy of the fiber-optic gyroscopes. In this paper, a new method and testing device measuring the polarization characteristics of the optical components such as SLD light source, polarize maintain fiber, coupler and polarizer was introduced. This system has good qualities of low cost, easy to operate, high accuracy. Extinction ratio of fiber components can be tested up to 55dB. Tested with that device, Panda PM fiber's extinction ratio is 25dB.

Abstract:For making alignment technology of PANDA polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) more efficient, we propose a method based on Polarization Observation by the Lens-effect Tracing (POL) through complete theoretical derivation for the first time in this field of study. The mathematical model of imaging is created by conducing the ray equation of light transmitting in fiber and we can achieve polarization alignment by means of adjusting position of the brightest fringe on receiving screen. Some alignment errors outside the method itself are also analyzed to eliminate. Additionally, experiments were designed and carried out to measure the alignment accuracy and indicated that our method is valid for it can achieve the accuracy of polarization alignment < +/- 0.1 deg. The method can also be used to detect the fusion angle of optical fiber.

Abstract:In order to study the performance of Lyot fiber depolarizers , 2-section, 3-section and 4-section Lyot fiber depolarizers were analyzed by means of Jones matrix .After theoretical analysis and experimental verification , the mathematical expression of the dependence of the degree of polarization on the section number of a multi -section Lyot fiber depolarizer was obtained.A conclusion was made that the degree of polarization decreased substantially with the increase of section number of a fiber depolarizer .The experiment results show that the degree of polarization of a 4-section Lyot fiber depolarizer is one quarter of a 2-section fiber depolarizer .The standard deviation decreases from 0.0951 to 0.0245.The experimental results prove the mathematical expressions are correct .The results prove the correctness of the theory and provide theoretical guidance for the actual production of multi-section Lyot depolarizers .

Abstract:A single-polarization (SP) coupler based on air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) is proposed and numerically simulated. The physical mechanism is the decoupling phenomenon occurring at special separations between the cores of the dual-core PBFs called decoupling points. The coupling length of one polarization in the coupler tends to be infinite while the coupling length of other polarization remains in normal level. The coupling ratio for the primary polarization can vary by adjusting the length of the coupler since the other polarization is always decoupled out at any length of the coupler. When this novel SP coupler is incorporated into a PBFs based fiber ring resonator, its unique polarization property is theoretically simulated. In this full-PBFs configuration, the SP coupler functions as the power splitter and the polarizer simultaneously. By the finite element method, the feasibility of the SP coupler to filter the secondary eigenstate of polarization (ESOP) propagating in the resonator is proved. And the performance of the SP coupler to suppress the temperature-related polarization fluctuation in the resonant fiber optic gyro is promised to be more significant to the in-line polarizer integrating in the resonator. Furthermore, the mechanism of decoupling phenomenon in the SP coupler and the influence of polarization-axis angular misalignment are discussed. In conclusion, an optimized SP coupler can couple the primary ESOP properly, and a polarization extinct ratio larger than 30 dB can be achieved within the angular misalignment of 0.9 degree. The aforementioned unique properties make this novel SP coupler attractive for the resonant fiber optic gyro.

Abstract:A novel hybrid single-polarization (SP) fiber ring resonator is demonstrated by using a polarization-maintaining coupler formed by splicing a section of SP fiber into the resonator. The SP fiber selectively eliminates the unwanted resonance by introducing high loss for the unwanted eigenstates of polarization in the resonator. The calculated result shows that this hybrid SP resonator is a good candidate for a tactical-grade performance gyro with a high environmental temperature stability. The experiment shows that the desired resonance in the resonator can keep an excellent stability in a wide temperature range, thus the temperature-dependent polarization-fluctuation drift in the resonant fiber optic gyro is sufficiently suppressed. As a result, a random walk coefficient of 0.08°/√h and a typical bias stability below 0.3°/h for an integration time of 300 s have been carried out.

Abstract:An analysis of the bias drift and the scale factor in the depolarized fiber optical gyros is presented in this paper, it indicates that : l)when a 40dB polarizer is used, the major reason for the bias drift of gyros is the intensity error but not the amplitude error. 2)In open-loop demodulation, the scale factor of the depolazed fiber gyros is larger than that of the PM fiber gyros. A method to reduce the bias drift is proved in the experiment.

Abstract:we report theoretical and experimental investigations into a polarization maintain fiber (PMF) coupler with novel transmission characteristics. The experimental results show that for circular and elliptically polarized input light, the novel coupler will act as an in-line polarizer and as a conventional fused-taper PMF coupler, the output polarization extinction ratio (PER) of the transmission arm is 31dB at a wavelength of 845nm. For linearly polarized input light, the coupler will merely act as a conventional 3dB PMF coupler. This novel device can be widely used in optical sensor systems, such as fiber optical gyroscopes, fiber optical hydrophones, and fiber optical current sensors, etc.

Abstract:We propose a depolarizer based on the principle of a collection of half-wave plates with randomly distributed optic axes. The design is demonstrated by means of dynamically photopatterning liquid crystal into randomly aligned homogeneous domains. We characterize the liquid crystal depolarizer for 1550 nm and C-band（1520–1610 nm）. A degree of polarization of less than 5% is obtained for any linearly polarized light. This study provides a practical candidate for high-performance depolarizers.

Abstract:We propose a passive polarization depolarizer to overcome the polarization noise in Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR). We also give a theoretical analysis of the depolarizer. The depolarizer is highly stable and has small insertion loss. It is based on a Mach-Zehnder interference scheme and mainly consists of two polarization beam splitters and a piece of delay fiber. Experimental results show that the polarization noise can be reduced by 96% by the depolarizer, and the Brillouin frequency shift induced by heat can be accurately detected by BOTDR with this depolarizer. The pulse width is 30 ns and the length of the sensing fiber is 24 km, which is the longest reported distance achieved with such a short pulse for BOTDR, to the best of our knowledge. Abstract:The theory of two counter-propagating polarized beams interacting in a randomly birefringent fiber via the Kerr and Raman effects is developed and applied to the quantitative description of Raman polarizers in the undepleted regime. Here Raman polarizers, first reported by Martinelli et. al. [Opt. Express. 17, 947 (2009)], are understood as Raman amplifiers operating in the regime in which an initially weak unpolarized beam is converted into an amplified fully polarized beam towards the fiber output. Three parameters are selected for the characterization of a Raman polarizer: the degree of polarization of the outcoming beam, its state of polarization, and its gain. All of these parameters represent quantities that are averaged over all random polarization states of the initially unpolarized signal beam. The presented theory is computer friendly and applicable to virtually all practically relevant situations, including the case of co-propagating beams, and in particular to the undepleted as well as the depleted regimes of the Raman polarizer.

The Depolarization Characteristic of Quartz Depolarizer in UV-VUV Spectral Region

Abstract:The quartz depolarizer consisting of two wedge-shaped quartz crystals was designed based on the Lyot depolarizer. The quartz depolarizer is used to reduce the polarization response of spectral instruments. The residual degree of polarization of the quartz depolarizer was derived by the method of matrix optics, so the variation regularity of its depolarization characteristic was analysed concerning its center thickness and the status of the incident radiation in the UV-VUV spectral range. Its depolarization effect was obvious for the radiation with some spectral bandwidth. Also, the depolarization characteristic of the quartz depolarizer was studied experimentally with 1-meter Seya-Namioka UV-VUV spectrometer, using LiF crystals as the polarizer and analyzer. The residual degree of polarization of the quartz depolarizer was less than 1%. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the quartz depolarizer we designed is appropriate to the spectral measurement with high accuracy.
