Abstract:Polarization controlling is crucial to increase the accuracy of the fiber-optic gyroscopes. In this paper, a new method and testing device measuring the polarization characteristics of the optical components such as SLD light source, polarize maintain fiber, coupler and polarizer was introduced. This system has good qualities of low cost, easy to operate, high accuracy. Extinction ratio of fiber components can be tested up to 55dB. Tested with that device, Panda PM fiber's extinction ratio is 25dB.

Abstract:This letter demonstrated a novel strategy to optimize the extinction ratio and the insertion loss of side-polished fiber-optical polarizers. The polarizer has a portion of the cladding polished away and replaced with only a single layer of thin aluminium film. An Integrated Surface Plasmonic TE-Pass Polarizer on a Silica-on-Silicon Waveguide

Abstract:We report an integrated implementation of a surface plasmonic TE-pass polarizer on a silica-on-silicon waveguide. The effect of waveguide width and length on polarization extinction ratio (PER) were investigated. For a 10 mm device, PER in excess of 48 dB with TE mode loss of approximately 0.8 dB was recorded. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate a wavelength dependence of PER smaller than 3 dB with a width of 5.5- 6.5 mu m device over the C band from 1520-1580 nm. We also present a theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of this architecture that are in good agreement with each other and the experimental results. By improving the fabrication process and PER measurement method, over 60 dB PER and less 0.1 dB TE mode loss can be obtained for a 10 mm polarizer according to our model, which is expected to be widely applicated in sensors such as optical gyroscopes.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a new method that uses the stress applying parts (SAPs) in the polarization maintaining fibers (PMFs) cladding to realize the self-alignment of the side-polished face and the slow axis. This method enables the polarizers to be fabricated directly onto PMFs, and there are no interruptions to the optical path and no internal interfaces to reflect light. The polarizers offer a high polarization extinction ratio (PER) and high temperature stability. Theoretical and experimental results show that the new method dramatically reduces the polarization axis alignment (PAA) error and increases the success rate of making side-polished PMF polarizers with PER > 23 dB from 18.8% to 65.0%.

Abstract:we report theoretical and experimental investigations into a polarization maintain fiber (PMF) coupler with novel transmission characteristics. The experimental results show that for circular and elliptically polarized input light, the novel coupler will act as an in-line polarizer and as a conventional fused-taper PMF coupler, the output polarization extinction ratio (PER) of the transmission arm is 31dB at a wavelength of 845nm. For linearly polarized input light, the coupler will merely act as a conventional 3dB PMF coupler. This novel device can be widely used in optical sensor systems, such as fiber optical gyroscopes, fiber optical hydrophones, and fiber optical current sensors, etc.

Abstract:A tunable fiber polarizer based on the selectively silver-coated large-core suspended-core fiber (LSCF) was proposed. A thin silver layer was coated on the inner surface of two opposite air holes of the LSCF by the chemical liquid-phase deposition method. The $y$-polarized light (parallel to the two silver-coated air holes) will excite surface plasmon resonance and experience large transmission loss, while the $x$-polarized light does not, resulting in a fiber polarizer. By varying the liquid filled in the microchannels of the LSCF, the operating wavelength can be tuned in the visible and near infrared region along with the surface plasmon resonance wavelength. The dependence of the polarization characteristics on the fiber length was experimentally investigated. The maximum polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 20.1 dB, 19.6 dB, and 18.3 dB and insertion loss (IL) of 2.24 dB, 2.56 dB, and 2.08 dB are achieved with the optimal fiber length of 16 cm at the operating wavelengths of 565.4 nm, 626.7 nm, and 739.7 nm, respectively. Compared with the multimode fiber-based polarizers reported previously, the proposed selectively silver-coated LSCF polarizer exhibits higher PER and lower IL.

Abstract:An in-line high efficient polarizer, composed of tapered fiber on the Au thin film, is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The protocol is based on the high efficient adiabatic conversion of transverse magnetic mode from tapered fiber into surface plasmon (SP) and attenuates quickly in metal film. On the contrary, the transverse electric polarized light is influenced hardly in the whole process. The polarization extinction ratio higher than 500:1 (≈27 dB) is obtained in our experiment. Our demonstration offers a potential way to manipulate the polarization of light in integrated circuit and may inspirit more attention to surface plasmon based devices for polarization controlling.

Abstract:The interaction between light and metallic nano-structures leads to many impressive achievements and has a wide range of applications. The thin-metal-film plasmon-assisted fiber-optic polarizer is one of the essential applications. However, the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of the plasmon-assisted polarizer have given rise to controversy over the past decade. Which of the polarizations is preferentially transmitted through the polarizer? The transverse electric polarization or the transverse magnetic polarization? Here, special emphasis is placed upon the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of thin-metal-film plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers. We first investigate the polarization mechanism of the polarizers theoretically and numerically. Furthermore, a novel approach is proposed to demonstrate the transmitted polarization in the plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers experimentally. We demonstrate that the polarization mechanism is based on the polarization selective absorption of the metallic material, and the transverse electric polarization is the only transmitted polarization of the metallic plasmon-assisted polarizer. Moreover, the plasmon-assisted polarizer can offer a high polarization extinction ratio (33.1 dB) and a low insertion loss (1.1 dB) at room temperature and have excellent temperature stability in the range of -48 to 82 degrees C. Experimental results agree well with our theoretical and numerical analyses. The findings clarify the confusion about the polarization mechanism and the transmitted polarization of metallic plasmon-assisted fiber polarizers over the past decade, providing new ground for the exploration of polarization-sensitive optical systems, with good potential applications in the fields of optical sensors, plasmonic lasers, coherent optical communications, and biosensor systems.

Abstract:A novel in-fiber polarizer based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is written by using a focused CO2 laser beam to notch a photonic crystal fiber periodically. Such a polarizer exhibits a high polarization extinction ratio of more than 20 dB over a wide wavelength range of similar to 11 mn near 1550 nm and a very low temperature sensitivity of 3.9 pm/degrees C, which overcomes the disadvantages of the temperature sensitivity of other in-fiber polarizers created on conventional single-mode fiber. Abstract:An on-chip TE-pass polarizer working near 850nm band is designed and fabricated on silicon nitride platform. The structure is very simple, using a straight silicon nitride waveguide separated from a metal strip by a low index silicon oxide spacer layer. By optimizing the thickness of the spacer layer, the metal strip introduces more loss for TM mode than TE mode. The measured extinction ratio of the fabricated device is around 20dB over a 16nm wavelength range from 837nm to 853nm for a 3mm-long polarizer.

Abstract:Abstract A PCF (photonic crystal fiber) with high birefringence and single-mode polarization retention over a wide wavelength range is designed and studied. The birefringence and polarization retention characteristics of the PCF base mode were studied using FVFEM (full vector finite element method) and APML (anisotropic perfect matching layer) as boundary conditions. The simulation results show that by rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the horizontal axis by 45°, and then rotating the elliptical air hole parallel to the longitudinal axis by 45°, the birefringence of the PCF obtained is as high as 4.7 × 10−2, and it has good single model ability, which can be used for various optical devices.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) polarizers with low reflection and absorption loss and high polarization extinction ratio (PER) based on multilayer metallic gratings filled in a polyimide film were studied theoretically and experimentally. In theory, THz polarization transmittance and PER of single-layer and multilayer polarizers at different THz frequencies were simulated, and their variations with the layer number of the metallic grating structure were discussed. With the increase in the layer number, PER increases prominently due to the evanescent wave coupling between different layers. In the experiment, a double-layer polarizer with an effective diameter of 42.3 mm was fabricated via layered imidization processes and evaluated by the THz time-domain spectroscopy measurements. Results showed that an average transmittance of 80.5% and a maximal PER of 70 dB were achieved, which were in good agreement with the simulated results and were compared with or outperformed most reported single- or double-layer polarizers.

Abstract:A subwavelength polarizer based on "sandwich" structured substrates is proposed in this study. The proposed subwavelength polarizer consists of three layers of subwavelength aluminum wires and dielectric substrate. The designed structure achieves an extinction ratio (ER) greater than 90 dB in a 400-800 nm visible wavelength region, achieving a maximum ER of 135 dB at 750 nm. Our results demonstrate significant improvements over the conventional single- and double-grid polarizers in terms of an ER and spectral range coverage. The proposed subwavelength polarizer in this paper has great potential in polarimetric imaging, liquid crystal display, and other optical fields. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Optical couplers are very important devices in optical communication systems and optical sensor systems. Several types of optical couplers with different materials or different transmission characteristics have been reported. Here we propose a semi-reciprocal polarization maintaining fibre coupler with unique transmission characteristics, which is distinct from conventional polarization maintaining fibre couplers and polarization beam splitters and investigate the characteristics of the coupler theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show that for circularly and elliptically polarized input light, the proposed coupler will act both as an in-line polariser and a conventional polarization maintaining fibre coupler. The output polarization extinction ratio of the transmission arm is 31.79 dB at a centre wavelength of 841 nm. For linearly polarized input light, the coupler will merely act as a conventional 3 dB polarization maintaining fibre coupler. The unique features of the proposed coupler enables the removal of polarisers from optical sensor systems and coherent optical communication systems and reduces the insertion loss and production cost of the optical path. Therefore there is wide application for this device in optical sensor systems and optical communication systems.
High-performance Silicon TE-pass Polarizer Assisted by Anisotropic Metamaterials

Abstract:The polarizer is a key component for integrated photonics to deal with the strong waveguide birefringence, especially for silicon photonics. A high-performance silicon TE-pass polarizer covering all optical communication bands with low insertion loss (IL) and high polarization extinction ratio (PER) is proposed here. This polarizer is based on anisotropic subwavelength grating (SWG) metamaterials, which maintain the fundamental TE mode as a guided mode but make the fundamental TM mode leaky. Furthermore, based on this working mechanism, the proposed polarizer can work well for any upper cladding material, including air and silicon dioxide (SiO2). The numerical results show that our proposed TE-pass polarizer has a remarkable performance with IL < 0.34 dB over 420 nm (PER > 23.5 dB) or 380 nm (PER > 30 dB) for the air cladding, and IL < 0.3 dB over 420 nm (PER > 25 dB) or 320 nm (PER > 30 dB) for the SiO2 cladding. The fabricated polarizer shows IL < 0.8 dB and PER > 23 dB for the bandwidths of 1.26-1.36 µm and 1.52-1.58 µm (other bandwidths were not measured due to the limited instrument in our research center, but it still covers the most important O-band and C-band).
