Abstract:From the roots of Ligularia virgaurea, two new benzofuranosesquiterpene dimers, named virgaurin B and virgaurin C, have been isolated. Their structures have been elucidated from the interpretation of the 1H-, 13C-NMR, mass and IR spectral data.

Abstract:Phytochemical reinvestigation of the petroleum ether-Et2O extract of the roots of Ligularia virgaurea has resulted in the isolation of three new sesquiterpenes, named virgauride 1, epivirgauride 2, and virgauronin 3, together with two known compounds, cacalone and epicacalone. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic studies (UV, IR, MS, H-1, C-13 NMR and DEFT) including 2D NMR experiments (HMQC and HMBC).

Abstract:Virgaurols A-D (1-4), four novel asymmetric eremophilane sesquiterpene dimers were isolated from the roots of Ligularia virgaurea. Especially, virgaurols A (1) and B (2) possessed novel carbon skeleton in which the two sesquiterpene units are uniquely connected by a single C-C bond directly. The structures of these dimers were determined on the basis of comprehensive spectral analysis. Compounds 1 and 3 were found to exhibit weak cytotoxicity against human leukemia (HL-60), human hepatoma (SMMC-7721), and human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells.

Abstract:A new eremophilane norsesquiterpenoid (1), together with a known eremophilane sesquiterpenoid (2), was isolated from the leaves of Ligularia virgaurea. The structure of 1 was elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic analysis (IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS), and its absolute configuration was determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment (with copper radiation). The known compound 2 was identified by comparison of its physical and spectral data with those reported in the literature. Compound 1 was assayed for its cytotoxic activities against human cervical carcinoma cell (HeLa) and human small cell lung cancer cell (NCI-446) lines.

Abstract:A novel benzofuran derivative (R)-(+)-Ligulaodonin A (1) and a new olean-12-ene triterpene (5), as well as 10 known compounds were isolated from the whole plant of Ligularia odontomanes HAND.-MAZZ. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic evidence, including IR, UV, EI-MS, positive HR-ESI-MS, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR. The absolute configuration of 1 was elucidated on the basis of circular dichroism (CD) data.

Abstract:Four benzofuranosesquiterpenes, 1-hydroxy-2-(3'-pentenyl)-3,7-dimethylbenzofuran (1), 1-hydroxy-2-(3'-pentenyl)-3,7-dimethylbenzofuran (2), cacalol (13), and 1,2-dehydrocacalohastin ( 14) were isolated from the rhizomes of Ligularia virgaurea (Compositae). A lipophilic group and an aqueous-favoring group were introduced to the compounds 1 and 13 to afford twelve new derivatives. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The results of the pharmacological test indicated that some of them can block Ca (++) influx by occupying binding sites of dihydropyridine.

Abstract:Four new benzofuran derivatives were isolated from the roots of Ligularia stenocephala; they were named as ligustenin A (1), B (2), C (3) and D (4), and the structures were established by spectroscopic methods including 2D NMR techniques. Ligustenin A (1) was found to exhibit potent anti-tumor activity against HL-60 (human leukemia cells), Bel-7402 (human hepatoma cells) and HO-8910 (human ovarian neoplasm cells) with IC50 values of 18.6, 27.6 and 57.5 muM, respectively.
