Abstract:Based on Yu Ruihuang's theory of electron structure calculation, applying the boundary condition that “the electron density of the contacting surface between atoms must be continuous” advanced by Cheng Kaijia, the hybridization states of Fec and Fef atoms in C-containing structure unit of austenite and FeI, FeII and FeIII atoms in C-containing unit of martensite are ascertained. The hybrid levels of Fec and Fef atoms in austenite are13 and14, respectively; and those of FeI, FeII and FeIII atoms are 12, 10 and 9, respectively. When the C content is low, the 11th, 10th and 9th levels are also the probable atom state martensite.

Abstract:A modified Landau polynomial was proposed to describe the structure features of austenite/martensite interface under the existence of an interracial preferred state. When the elastic modulus of austenite, the energy of preferred state and the driving force for martensitic transformation were selected as the variables, a transitional platform with a slow change in order parameter, i.e. scaled shear strain whose structure is neither austenite nor martensite, was found using Ginzburg-Landau theory. The energy and width of austenite/martensite interface were calculated. Based on these calculated results, some experimental phenomena during martensitic transformation can be explained perfectly. It is demonstrated that the current model is more universal.

Abstract:The crystallography and chemistry of interfaces between austenite and ferrite in duplex steels control many important materials properties but remain poorly understood. In this study, we experimentally show that in an additively manufactured and heat treated duplex stainless steel, the majority of austenite-ferrite interfaces terminate on {111}A/{110}F planes, and this behaviour is more pronounced for rational interfaces with the Kurdjomov-Sachs orientation relationship. Interface segregation was found to be controlled by not only the interface crystallography but also the bonding properties of solute atoms. Solute elements showed higher interfacial excess at irrational interfaces. Furthermore, a heterogeneous distribution of selected solute elements in austenite-ferrite interfaces planes was observed. Our findings reinforce the importance and, in fact, necessity to consider five independent crystallographic parameters and chemical architecture of interphase boundaries for advanced control of mechanical and other critical properties in duplex materials.

Temperature and orientation dependence of austenite/B1 type compound interfacial energy

Abstract:A discrete lattice plane, nearest neighbor broken bond model is applied to calculate the interfacial energy of a coherent austenite(gamma)/B1 compound interphase boundary. The composition profiles, temperature and orientation dependence of interfacial energy are investigated. The composition profiles are found to be fairly sharp and the variation of interfacial energy with temperature does not appear to be large below 1500K. In contrast to coherent f.c.c./f.c.c. interfaces, a (111) interface is likely to have the largest chemical interfacial energy.

Abstract:The as-cast eutectic Cu–71.8wt.% Ag was prepared. The orientation relationship and interface structure of Cu and Ag phases were investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The interface energies and nucleation rates in the formation of different orientation relationships were discussed. The Cu and Ag eutectic lamellae can form the cube-on-cube and hetero-twin orientation relationships and the occurrence probabilities of the two orientation relationships are approximate in the solidification of the eutectic structure. There are misfit dislocations and monolayer steps at the interface between both phases having the cube-on-cube or hetero-twin relationship. The twin fault and lattice mismatch energies at the interface result only in an insignificant effect on the formation of different orientation relationships between both phases of the eutectic laminae.

Abstract:A 1C3Mn1.5Si steel was partially transformed into martensite by quenching to room temperature after full austenitisation. A partitioning treatment was applied in situ in a high resolution transmission electron microscope. The width of an austenite grain in between martensite constituents was followed as a function of the annealing time. Migration of the martensite–austenite interfaces was quantitatively measured and compared with results from a model for carbon partitioning from martensite to austenite involving interface motion. The kinetics of the observed movement suggests that the interface has a semi-coherent nature. This work shows that grain boundary mobility of the martensite–austenite interfaces during annealing may play an important role in the microstructure development during the process of Quenching and Partitioning in steels.

Abstract:Local electron work function, adhesive force, modulus and deformation of ferrite and austenite phases in a duplex stainless steel were analyzed by scanning force microscopy. It is demonstrated that the austenite has a higher electron work function than the ferrite, corresponding to higher modulus, smaller deformation and larger adhesive force. Relevant first-principles calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism behind. It is demonstrated that the difference in the properties between austenite and ferrite is intrinsically related to their electron work functions.

Abstract:The ferrite → austenite transformation in a duplex stainless steel serves as a good model alloy for studying body-centered cubic (bcc) → face-centered cubic (fcc) transformations in metals and alloys. However, the morphology and crystallography of austenite precipitates have not been well understood. A detailed TEM study was made on the crystallography of austenite precipitates to improve the understanding of this transformation. The orientation relationship (OR) was reassessed by an OR matrix to characterize the three-dimensional crystallography between austenite and ferrite. Meanwhile, interfacial dislocation structures were investigated for all of the three prominent facets by using the Δg method and the dislocation contrast extinction method. Each facet was found to contain a set of dislocations parallel to the long axis of precipitates. Their Burgers vectors have been characterized; one of them, the Burgers vector [0 0 1]f∣[0 0 1]b, is reported for the first time in an fcc/bcc system. The O-line model was applied to explain the observations, and produced consistent results. However, some features cannot be explained by the O-line model. These will be further rationalized in the next paper.

Abstract:Phase transformation is one of the most effective methods to tailor microstructure of steels. In order to develop high performance steels, microstructure has to be precisely tuned, which requires a deep understanding of phase transformation. The austenite to ferrite transformation in steels has been of great interest for several decades due to its considerable importance in the processing of modern high performance steels, and it has been investigated from various aspects. Mechanism of interface migration and alloying elements partitioning during the austenite to ferrite transformation was regarded as one of the most significant and challenging topics in the field. This paper briefly summarized the recent progress in the understanding of this topic from both theoretical and experimental perspectives, and would also provide discussions and outlook of the unresolved issues.

Abstract:Transmission electron forward scatter diffraction and other characterization techniques were used to investigate the fine structure and the variant relationship of the martensite/austenite (M/A) constituent of the granular bainite in low-carbon low-alloy steel. The results demonstrated that the M/A constituents were distributed in clusters throughout the bainitic ferrite. Lath martensite was the main component of the M/A constituent, where the relationship between the martensite variants was consistent with the Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation relationship and only three variants were found in the M/A constituent, suggesting that the variants had formed in the M/A constituent according to a specific mechanism. Furthermore, the Σ3 boundaries in the M/A constituent were much longer than their counterparts in the bainitic ferrite region. The results indicate that transmission electron forward scatter diffraction is an effective method of crystallographic analysis for nanolaths in M/A constituents.
An Investigation on the Equilibrium Morphology and Interfacial Structures of Pricipitates in Duplex Stainless Steel by Atomistic Simulation

Abstract:Assorted morphologies of precipitates in fcc/bcc transformation systems have been reported, which often exhibit irrational characteristic. Various models have been developed to explain the habit plane (or the broad facet), but the overall morphologies of the precipitates are seldom explained quantitatively. In this work, the equilibrium cross-section of rod-shape austenite precipitates in duplex stainless steel is determined by atomistic simulation. The input orientation relationship (OR) between fcc and bcc phase is determined according to the O-line criterion (one of the interfaces contains a single set of dislocations), with the condition that the invariant line lies in close-packed plane pair of (1 (1) over bar(1) over bar)(f)|(10 (1) over bar)(b) and the Burgers vector of O-lines is [011](f|)/2|((1) over bar 11)(b)/2. The obtained OR is close to the K-S OR ((11 (1) over bar)(f)//(01 (1) over bar)(b), [101](f)//(111)(b)), with the deviation of 1.27 degrees from the parallelism in both planes and directions. Interfacial energy of interfaces in various orientations in the zone axis of the invariant line ([0.75 0.10 0.65](f)//[0.52 0.68 0.52](b)) has been calculated. To ensure the reliability of the calculated values, an initial atomic configuration free of interstitial and vacancy is constructed for each interface. The energies of the O-line interface, the interface normal to either Delta g(((1) over bar 11)) or Delta g((020)) are found to have similar values, each at a local minimum. Based on the calculated interfacial energies, the equilibrium cross-section morphology is determined by the Wulff construction. The result shows that the morphology exhibits a near rhombus cross-section, which agrees consistently with experiments. One of the major facets is the O-line interface, normal to ((0.66) over bar 0.12 0.74)(f)//((0.51) over bar (0.24) over bar 0.83)(b), in agreement with the observation. The other facet is normal to Delta g((020)) (((0.25) over bar (0.87) over bar 0.42)(f)//(0.45 (0.73) over bar 0.51)(b)) in the calculated result, while it is normal to Delta g(((1) over bar 11)) (((0.36) over bar (0.77) over bar 0.53)(f)//(0.31 (0.71) over bar 0.63)(b)) in experimental results, with about 10 degrees difference between them. The discrepancy between calculated and observed results is probably because the experiments have not reached the equilibrium state. The dislocation structures in these three interfaces are identified from the atomic simulation results by a newly developed method based on the singular value decomposition of the Nye tensor. It confirms that the O-line interface contains a single set of [011](f)/2 dislocations with spacing of 1.5 nm. The interface normal to either Delta g(((1) over bar 11)) or Delta g((020)) contains two sets of dislocations. The dislocation structure in the facet normal to Delta g((1) over bar 11)) is in good agreement with experimental observation of the non-O-line facet, including the local decomposition of dislocation core to (1 (1) over bar(1) over bar)(f) stacking faults.

Abstract:We report an in-situ TEM investigation of a reverse martensite transformation in an Fe–Ni–Mn alloy at temperature ranging from 400°C to 600°C. Two modes, normal and ledge motions, have been observed during retreating migration of the broad interfaces (∼habit plane) between austenite and martensite. A large number of dislocations nearly perpendicular to the interface were observed in the volume swept by a fast normal motion of the interface, while few dislocations are left behind in the fresh austenite transformed by a ledge motion. During the ledge motion, concurrent displacement of the interfacial dislocations along both ledge riser and terrace plane is evidently detected. The normal displacement component for the dislocations in the broad interface is small and this is associated with a slow normal motion of the interface.

Abstract:The pronounced mechanical property of pearlitic steels highly correlates with the ferrite (bcc-Fe)/cementite (Fe3C) boundaries inside. Unraveling the interface structure at an atomic level is essential for interpreting the material's property. In the present study, using aberration-corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal the atomic configuration as well as the electronic structure of the Fe/Fe3C interfaces with the Isaichev orientation in pearlite. The interface with terminating layer Fe-C-Fe in cementite has the lowest energy due to the formation of interfacial Fe-C bonds. Terrace steps which are frequently observed at the interfaces would not break the lattice match between the two phases.

Abstract:A concept is developed for assessing the stability of untransformed austenite entering the martensite-austenite component of a bainitic structure, which is determined by the action of hydrostatic stresses caused by difference in the specific volumes of the austenite and ferrite phases. Relations describing the thermal stability of austenite in the M/A phase are derived. The former is affected by the volume fraction of the phase, the fineness, the size distribution, and the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the austenite and of the ferrite component of the bainite.

Abstract:. A low carbon steel is austenitized and isothermally held at 680°C to form allotriomorphic ferrite and followed by a holding at lower temperature to form bainite. The morphology of allotriomorphic ferrite/bainite interfaces is studied using optical microscope. Three kinds of combination are observed: Type I: interface on one side is clear while on the other side, unclear; Type II: unclear on both sides; Type III: clear on both sides. Clear interface indicates a large difference in the orientation between the bainite and the ferrite, and unclear interface, a very small difference. The statistical counting shows that the ratio of Type I is about 80-82%, and that of Type II, 7-8%, and Type III, 9-11%. It is observed that this ratio does not change with the austenite grain size and bainite forming temperature. And the clear and unclear side of allotriomorphic ferrite may have different influence on the nucleation rate of bainite at allotriomorhic ferrite/prior austenite interface.

Abstract:The relative stability, the electronic structure, and the magnetic properties of the four models for Au(100)/Fe3O4(100) interface have been studied using density functional theory. From calculations, we find that all the interface energies of the four models are dependent linearly on the O chemical potential. At the same time, we predict the most stable structure of Au(100)/Fe3O4(100) interface. The density of states, the total energies, and the atomic spin magnetic moments of the four interface models are also calculated, which show that the half-metallic properties of bulk Fe3O4 are destroyed in the four models due to the charge transfer between Au layers and the Fe3O4 surface. In addition, from the total energies of the relaxed interface models in three magnetic states corresponding to ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and nonmagnetic, we get the ground states of the four relaxed interface models, respectively.

Abstract:The substructure of martensite in the Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy has been investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and discussed within the framework of a phenomenological theoretical analysis. The (001) compound twins and (001) stacking faults were confirmed to be the main substructure inside a martensite variant with some (011) stacking faults infrequently observed. The (001) twinning boundary was straight with some blurred regions and (001) faults existing near the interface. The (001) compound twin alone is shown to be unable to produce the lattice invariant shear necessary for the martensitic transformation.

Abstract:The nucleation site of austenite from pearlitic structure during reverse transformation at 1073 K in Fe- 0.6C- 1Cr (mass%) alloy was examined by means of electron backscattering diffraction. It was found that austenite preferentially nucleates at high-angle boundaries (HABs) of pearlitic ferrite. Some austenite nuclei maintain a near Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationship (OR) with one or two pearlitic ferrites adjacent to the HAB. Austenite nucleated at the HAB face preferentially grows into the adjacent pearlitic ferrite, deviating greatly from the K-S OR. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Carbon enrichment in the austenite transformed from martensite during intercritical annealing was measured by electron probe microanalyzer and three-dimensional atom probe microscopy in Fe-2Mn-0.3C and Fe-0.35C alloys. At early stages of the transformation, negligible Mn partitioning occurs, and carbon content in austenite is higher than orthoequilibrium and paraequilibrium predictions. This is presumably attributed to finite intrinsic interface mobility and/or solute drag effect. The resultant free energy dissipation at interface was estimated.

Abstract:The structure and mobility of martensite variant interfaces have been investigated using TEM and HREM observations, and then the relations of interface structure to its mobility are revealed. It is shown that the A/C interface is straight, well-defined and perfectly coherent. The A/B interface is irrational, coherent and gradually curved. The A/D interface is stepped and the interface steps are the basal planes of the two variants. The intervariant-group interfaces are curved and blurred and some variants are tapered at the intervariant-group interface. The A/C and A/B interface have obvious mobility and may move smoothly and remain straight during moving. The mobility is not effective for A/D interface, and even worse for intervariant-group interfaces. The morphology, structure and mobility of interplate boundary are all related to the degree of self-accommodation and the misorientation of the twin boundary.
