Abstract:The dependence of the optical and thermal characteristics of phase-change optical disks on the multilayer disk structure was analyzed and simulated. Using the integrated software developed, a phase-change optical disk structure for a blue laser is designed with both optical and thermal considerations, and a suitable disk structure is proposed. Based on the designed disk structure, writing and rewriting processes are simulated, and the results are satisfactory.

Abstract:An integrated design software to analyze optical, thermal and crystallization characteristics of phase change optical disks has been developed. It has been applied to simulate the reflectivity of nano-scale thin films, mark size, effect of super-RENS and effects of sulfur atom diffusion on the recording performance. In order to verify the simulation results, a set of experiments has been designed and carried out. The study results show that the software can simulate accurately the practical processes and then obtain reliable results. The software has been applied to design DVD-RAM 4.7 GB disks with multi layer structure. Based on these simulation results, 4.7 GB/side DVD-RAM disks that can fully meet the DVD-RAM standard have been successfully fabricated, which shows that the software is a powerful tool for the phase change optical disk design.

Abstract:Phase-change recording media1) are widely used in rewritable optical disks such as the CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD±RW and Blu-ray disc2). Rewritable phase-change optical disks have several different applications corresponding to different recording speed. For example, DVD phase-change disks for the video application are usually used at a low rotation speed, which is suitable for real time operation; DVD phase-change disks for the personal computer application are usually used at a high rotation speed to achieve a high data transfer rate. Even for the same application, the recording speed always increases because of the market demand. Therefore it is necessary to develop rewritable phase-change disk compatible with a broad range of recording speed.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new simple structure of dual-layer rewritable phase-change optical discs. The disc consists of only three conventional materials for rewritable disc, a phase-change layer, dielectric layers and a reflective layer. Recording, erasing and overwriting in both recording mediums of the new disc structure are demonstrated and characterized. Both recording mediums can be rewritten using the conventional recording power defined by digital versatile disc (DVD) standard.

Abstract:Multi-level reflection was obtained on rewritable phase change optical disks with a static tester using different laser amplitudes. Different levels of input power amplitude give rise to different reflection levels. In order to study the mechanism for forming the multi-level reflection, partial crystallization effect and size effect were studied. The partial crystallization effect was studied using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurement and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) measurement. The size effect was studied by simulation and measurement. Based on the simulation and experimental results the combination of size effect and partial crystallization effect is proposed as the main reason to cause the multi-level reflection. This model can be used to analyse the writing, erasing, and overwriting processes of multi-level reflection modulation recording.

Abstract:Phase change recording is an emerging technology for achieving removable high density data storage compatible with CD or DVD ROM. The data transfer rate (DTR) is one of the most important parameters for PC optical recording disks. DTR is primarily limited by the crystallization speed of the amorphous marks in the recording layer. The amorphous marks cannot be completely erased when the crystallization speed is not fast enough to match the linear velocity of the laser light spot with respect to the disk. This would cause distortions in the shape of the overwritten marks, and results in a high level of noise. Therefore the re-crystallization behavior of the phase change layer is fundamental to phase change recording technology. AgInSbTe and GeSbTe are two main phase change materials used in current phase change optical disks. The complete erasing time (CET) of the former one increases strongly with an increase of the size of the written mark, and therefore is called a growth-driven material. The CET of the latter increases only slightly with the increase of the size of the written mark, and therefore is called a nucleation-driven material. In order to achieve high DTR, we must study the dynamic erasing behavior of phase change optical disks. This article addresses how marks are erased in rewritable phase change optical disks.

Abstract:An integrated analysis system based on thin film optics, thermal transfer and electromagnetics is developed. Thermal conductivity and generated heat are discussed for mark formation. The simulations of multilayer calorific sources and multibeam heating sources using the finite element method (FEM) are investigated. The readout of nanometer-scaled marks based on computational electromagnetics using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is discussed. The real marks captured with microscopes can be analyzed using this integrated analysis system combined with digital image technology. Material models in the electromagnetic vector method are discussed with reference to different layers of disk. It provides a powerful tool for structure design and failure analysis of phase-change optical disks.

Abstract:In phase-change (PC) optical recording technology, one of the problems was the overwriting (OW) cycles. PC optical recording technology has disadvantages of lesser overwrite cycles (1000 to 100000 times for commercial products) compared to magneto-optical technology (unlimited OW cycles). Therefore it is important to understand and improve the OW properties of the PC disc. Many OW behaviors of PC disc studies, such as OW cycle degradation model [1], microstructural studies [2, 3], rapid cooling structure [4], film adhesion study [5] and material study [4, 6, 7] have been carried out. Most of the study areas were in the material composition, microstructure and disc structure. In this paper, we study the effect of OW toward the polycarbonate substrate. As we know, glass transition temperature of polycarbonate substrate is about 120oC, at this temperature the material will start soften. In the writing process of the PC optical disc, in order to write an amorphous mark, the PC must be melt and quench rapidly. Since melting temperature of PC material is over 600oC and the distance between PC layer & polycarbonate was so small (about 100nm) compare to the mark size, it is possible that the thermal energy flow will be high enough to damage the substrate, thus reduce the OW cycles.

Abstract:Three-dimensional thermal finite-element modelling and analyses based on an improved thermal model are performed on grooved near-field re-writable phase change optical disk for the first time. The improved model takes into consideration the thermal effects generated by both the incident and reflected light. Performance of the disk as a result of optical and geometrical variations was quantified. The thermal effects due to irradiation by a 430 nm blue laser were also investigated. Temperature profiles and heat flow characteristics were obtained and analysed. One set of result obtained indicated that a numerical aperture of 1.5 with a coupling efficiency of 50% resulted in the highest recorded temperature.

Abstract:In order to make the optical disk having good recording/reading performance and long-term stability, the multilayer structure of the phase-change optical disk must be optimized. By using the design software capable of simulating and analyzing the reading process for phase-change optical disk design, a phase-change optical disk structure for the blue laser (405 nm) was designed. The relation between the multilayer's optical parameters (reflectivity and reflectivity contrast) and the film thickness of the structure and the depth of the groove are studied. The optimum structures of the phase-change optical disk are lower ZnS-SiO 2/AglnTeSb/upper ZnS-SiO 2/Al layered structure of 100 nm/10 nm/25 nm/60 nm for land recording and 140 nm/15 nm/30 nm/60 nm for groove recording. The depth of the groove is 50 nm.

Abstract:Multilevel data storage (ML) is a new method in the optical storage field, which is also a trend for improving the capability of future optical discs. This article introduces several ML methods based on phase-change media including pit depth modulation (PDM) and mark radial width modulation (MRWM). In addition, some disadvantages and advantages concerning the principle of these methods will be discussed. Finally, a new ML method will be advanced, through which the levels in one recording pit will be increased evidently.

Abstract:Abstract This paper deals with disk drive failures that occur in the interface area between the head and disk. The failures often lead to the loss of stored data and are characterized by circumferential microscratches that are usually visible to the unaided eye. The recording media in disk drives consists of a metal, glass, ceramic, or plastic substrate coated with a magnetic material. Data errors are classified as ‘soft’ or ‘hard’ depending on their correctability. Examination has shown that hard errors are the result of an abrasive wear process that begins with contact between head and disk asperities. The contact generates debris that, as it accumulates, increases contact pressure between the read-write head and the surface of the disk. Under sufficient pressure, the magnetic coating material begins wearing away, resulting in data loss.

Abstract:Recently, we proposed the concept of superlattice-like (SLL) phase change optical disk and demonstrated excellent high-speed recording properties for disks adopting this SLL structure (T.C. Chong et al, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. vol. 39, p. 737, 2000, and J. Appl. Phys. vol. 91, 2002). This technology paves an alternative way to develop phase change materials for optical disks. On the other hand, with the development of DVD technology, DVD recording is being introduced in two different markets simultaneously, i.e., the DVD video recorder and the DVD writer for personal computer use. It is expected that the recording speed of rewritable DVD media should be like the rewritable CD, which is compatible with CD writers with different speeds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rewritable DVD media to cover a broad range of recording speeds in order to make them compatible with different DVD recorders and drives. In this contribution, we present recent progress on the recording properties of the SLL disk at different recording speeds by tuning the stack structure, aiming to make the SLL disk multispeed compatible.

Abstract:Scaling characteristics of the surface roughening of the phase-change optical media have been investigated. Studies have shown that the variation-correlation function of the surface profile of recording media follows an asymptotic power law. The influence of the film surfaces with different roughness on the readout performance of the optical media has been investigated based on a scalar diffraction model. The results show that only one roughness parameter cannot reflect the responding readout properties of a phase-change optical disk such as signal noise and jitter due to the surface roughening. Fractal Brownian motion is applied to simulate the scaling characteristics of the surface roughening. Influence of the surface roughening with different Hurst exponents on the readout performance of the optical media has been studied. Results of the numerical calculation from both simulated and physical surfaces of the phase-change media show that the surface roughening with a lower Hurst exponent will cause a higher deterioration of the detected signals. Therefore, the fractal method provides an effective approach to the failure analysis of the optical phase-change disk. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The laser-beam spot size and track pitch of phase change optical disks are continuously decreasing. Hence any slight deformation in the disk will affect data storage performance efficiency. Thus said thermal deformation at high temperatures induced by laser irradiation becomes an important issue in optical disks. Thermal elastic deformation in blue-laser optical disks has been calculated by the finite element method (FEM). The associations of thermal deformation with disk structures and laser power have been investigated to supply methods to decrease thermal deformation. It was found that the peak temperature and peak deformation lies in different layers. Several methods of preventing deformation in blue-laser optical disks have been proposed. It was found that these methods can be used to optimize the structures of high density phase change optical disks.

Abstract:High storage density optical disk is expected as the key device for storage at the dawn of the full-scale multimedia age. It meets the requirement of a large storing capacity to record and retrieve great amounts of data including motion pictures, audio information and data for computer processing. The advanced storage media are the most important means for high density optical disk storage. According to optical diffraction limitation the diameter of the focused spot is proportional to (lambda) /NA, where (lambda) is writing and reading laser wavelength and NA is optical numerical aperture of focusing lens. Therefore, the practical approach for minimizing the mark length is to decrease (lambda) and to increase NA. There are three steps for decreasing laser wavelength from 780 - 800 nm used now to 630 - 650 nm (red diode lasers) and then to 400 - 500 nm (blue-green lasers). The advanced storage materials should be sensitive, stable and with recording performances at 630 - 650 nm and 400 - 500 nm laser wavelength regions. This paper reports our progress of three kinds of advanced storage materials for high density optical disks, there are: magneto-optical, phase change and organic storage materials. The main attention is put on rewritable (erasable) optical storage.

Abstract:Disk structure optimization, thermal balance design and a new writing strategy are proposed to further widen the speed range of multispeed recording for an initialization-free phase-change disk. Simulated results show a high cooling rate. Experimental results show that the initialization-free phase-change disk with three improvement methods has a broad range of recording speeds from 3.49 to 20.94 m/s, which correspond to a rotation speed of 1 to 6 times that of digital versatile disk-read only memory (DVD-ROM), respectively.

Abstract:Analysis of the optical channel of a photochromic multi-level storage system is the basis of the design of signal-processing sub-systems. Fourier optics was used to study the change of the the optical field distribution on the exit pupil of the pickup caused by the change of the reflective field on the optical disc surface. The superposition characteriscs of the Fourier optics and the photochromic marks was used to develop a model of the optical channel of a photochromic multi-level optical disc to analyze the readout signal and the relations between its components over a single mark. The experiments used a kind of fulgide photochromic material as the recording layer. Different combinations of the laser power and the write time were used with 4-level recording realized using high, medium, low and zero laser diode powers. The result shows that a numerical analysis is verified by the experimental readout signals.

Abstract:With the improvement of recording density of multi-level (ML) optical storage system, more serious burst errors will be caused by the same degree of scratches on the surface of disc in ML optical disc than conventional optical recording systems such as DVD. In this paper we present a new error correction code (ECC) scheme on the basis of improving original ECC scheme. The scheme is composed of two blocks. One is used to generate erasure information through the error-only decoding and the other carries out error and erasure decoding according to the erasure information provided from one. The code rate of the proposed scheme is up to 87.9% and the maximum correctable length of burst errors is 7104 bytes. The simulation result shows that the new scheme is qualified and effective for multi-level (ML) optical system.
