Abstract:The electrical signals of laser plasma were measured by a passive probe based on the principle of plasma sheath effect. A high-speed CCD camera was synchronously employed to observe the dynamic behavior of the plasma. To eliminate the effect of zero drift and equipment noise on electrical signals, wavelet packet transformation (WPT) was adopted to process the original signal. The approximate coefficient of frequency band ranging from 0 to 195 Hz was reconstructed to form the denoised signal, which was found to have a good correlation with the welding quality. In order to obtain the characteristic information of the denoised signal, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) was performed and the residual term representing the variation trend of an electrical signal was obtained. The results showed a strong connection between the value of the residual term and the weld defect. Based on the detection results of electrical signals, the formation mechanism of the surface defect was proposed according to the morphology of the plasma plume acquired by the high-speed CCD camera.

Abstract:Anovel on-line monitoring method was proposed for high power CO2laser welding.Agroup of comparison tests were designed to get continuous high-speed photography of laser induced plasma.The height,bottom width and area of laserinduced plasma were calculated withi mage segment based on OTSU algorithm.The experi mental results showthat the difference of plasma height and area is great between full penetration condition and partial penetration condition accordingtotheir probability density graphs and coefficient of variations.The undulation frequency of plasma area in partial penetration condition mostly distributes at the zone of 400 Hz while 200 Hz in full penetration condition.

Abstract:A series of technological parameters in controlling plasma in high-power CO2 laser welding were investigated by using a precise declined-blow system for assist-gas regulating and controlling. The plasma light intensity above molten-pool and in key-hole was also measured by phototransistors. The plasma control mechanism was theoretically analyzed. The results show that plasma-control effect was divided into three regions with the change of assist-gas flow-quantity. No matter what gas species were used, plasma can be best controlled when the assist-gas operation pressure slightly higher than the metallic vapour pressure.

Abstract:A hollow cylindrical electrode was employed to detect the electric signal of laser-induced plasma during YAG-pulse laser welding of Al and 45 steel. The theoretical model established for analyzing the plasma region and comparing with the experiments. The results show that the current exhibits a saturation effect in the I-V curves of plasma signal with increasing voltage in the negative voltage region, and the plasma temperature is higher than the vaporization temperature of welded materials.

Abstract:An approach to detecting laser-induced plasma using passive probe was brought up. The plasma of laser welding was studied by using a synchronous electric and spectral information acquisition system, the laser-induced plasma was detected by a passive electric probe and fiber spectrometer, the electrical signal was analyzed on the basis of the theory of plasma sheath, and the temperature of laser-induced plasma was calculated by using the method of relative spectral intensity. The analysis results from electrical signal and spectral one were compared. Calculation results of three kinds of surface circumstances, which were respectively coated by KF, TiO2 and without coating, were compared. The factors affecting the detection accuracy were studied. The results indicated that the results calculated by passive probe matched that by spectral signal basically, and the accuracy was affected by ions mass of the plasma. The designed passive electric probe can be used to reflect the continuous fluctuation of electron temperature of the generated plasma, and monitor the laser-induced plasma.

Abstract:The acoustic emission (AE) signals were detected in real-time during the process of pulsed YAG laser welding. Some characteristic analysis methods, including AE count statistic, root mean square (RMS) waveform calculation and power spectrum distribution, were used to analyze the AE signals. According to the AE signals, the characteristics of plasma plume and penetration of weld bead were studied. The results showed that the source mechanism for AE generation was the recoil force and thermal vibration generated by the plasma plume acting on molten pool. The AE signals detected in welding contained a lot of valuable information about plasma plume. AE count, RMS waveform and power spectrum of AE signals showed the energy characteristics of plasma plume in time and frequency domain. Therefore, AE signals detected in pulsed laser welding had clear correlations with plasma plume, which were valuable to evaluate the plasma plume and the penetration of weld bead. Development of the Plasma Detecting System in CO 2 Laser Welding

Abstract:An advanced plasma detecting system of CO2 laser welding has been developed. The system consists of three sensors, signal processing, A/D data converting and photo-electric coupling units connected with a rapid personal computer. The Photocell Sensor (PS) detects the intensity of the blue light irradiated by the plasma. The Plasma Charge Sensor (PCS) detects the electric density of the plasma plume. The Microphone Sensor detects the sound pressure coming from the rapidly expanding vapor in the keyhole. All of the sensors can exactly distinguish three kinds of welding processes--heat conduction welding, deep penetration welding, unstable mode welding. When the welding parameters are given, the PCS signal depend on the distance between the welding nozzle and the workpiece, the PS signals are correlated closely to the focal point position. Three sensors can be used to control the focal point position (penetration depth) under given laser power and welding speed. In addition, the relation between detecting signals and penetration depth is given. The sensors of the system have features of simple structure, low cost and high sensitivity, which are especially suitable for on-line plasma detecting, quality controlling and off-line plasma analyzing of CO2 laser welding.

Abstract:High power fibre lasers have recently received much attention because of their inherent advantages such as high output power, high beam quality, compact size, and flexible fibre delivery. Studies on the mechanism behind fibre laser welding systems may further promote their practical application. In this paper, high speed video observations were used to study the characteristics of the plasma/vapour induced during the bead-on-plate welding of ZL114 using a high power CW fibre laser. We also analysed the cause of the periodic oscillation of the plasma/vapour. The results revealed that plasma/vapour induced from high power lasers oscillate periodically at 450–600μs cycles above the weld pool surface. The use of a shielding gas has little effect on the oscillation cycle. The plasma/vapour absorption is not the main reason for the periodical oscillation of plasma/vapour induced during fibre laser welding. The periodic oscillation of the plasma/vapour can be attributed to the oscillation of the keyhole.

Abstract:The plasma electrical signal has gained extensive attention for characterizing the behavior of the laser-induced plasma due to the advantages of easy acquisition and feedback control. In this paper, the electrical signals were measured by a passive probe based on the principle of plasma sheath effect. To explore the mutation characteristics of plasma electrical signals during defect generation in laser deep penetration welding, wavelet packet transform (WPT) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) were used to compress data and extract features, respectively. Based on the analysis of the time-frequency spectrum of a typical plasma electrical signal, the approximate coefficients of 0(similar to)390 Hz frequency range were reconstructed. The residual term which characterizes the change trend of electrical signal was obtained by the further adaptive decomposition. For better identifying weld defects, another two statistical features, mean value and standard deviation, were extracted by carrying out statistical analysis in the time domain. The feature database is built with above features and used as inputs of the predictive model based on the probabilistic neural network (PNN). The result showed the average prediction accuracy was as high as 90.16% when recognizing five statuses of weld seam, including sound weld and four kinds of weld defects.

Abstract:By using the high speed observation and spectral diagnosis, we compared and analyzed the welding penetration depth, plasma behavior, and plasma spectral feature of magnesium alloy during laser-arc hybrid welding, for understanding the characteristics of arc plasma in the welding process. Results show that there are three kinds of laser-arc combination styles, i.e. arc root separating from laser keyhole when laser beam does not pass through the arc plasma, arc root separating from laser keyhole when laser beam passes through the arc plasma, and the root of arc plasma right on the laser keyhole. When arc plasma roots the laser keyhole, it connects with the keyhole plasma, and a hybrid discharge happens. The keyhole part of the hybrid plasma possesses extreme electric conductivity as high as 1.2×104 S/m and approaches thermal equilibrium state, resulting in the fact that the laser induced and enhanced arc plasma has high electric current density (approximately 103 A/cm2) and energy utilization.

Abstract:Hybrid plasma is an important physical phenomenon in fiber laser-MIG hybrid welding. It greatly affects the stability of the process, the quality of the weld, and the efficiency of energy coupling. In this paper, clear and direct proofs of these characteristics are presented through high-speed video images. Spectroscopic analysis is used to describe the characterization of hybrid plasma. The hybrid plasma forms a curved channel between the welding wire and the keyhole during the fiber laser-MIG hybrid welding process. The curved channel is composed of two parts. The laser-induced plasma/vapor expands due to the combined effect of the laser and the MIG arc, forming an ionization duct, which is one part of the curved channel. The resistance of the duct is smaller than that of other locations because of the rise in electrical conductivity. Consequently, the electrical arc is guided through the duct to the surface of the material, which is the other part of the curved channel. The spectral intensities of metal elements in laser-MIG hybrid welding are much stronger than those in MIG-only welding, whereas the spectral intensities of shielding gas element in laser-MIG hybrid welding are much weaker.

Abstract:A series of technological parameters in controlling plasma in deep penetration CO2 laser welding at an arrange of power level from 1 kW to 5 kW were investigated by using a precise declined-blow system by which the gas-assisting pressure and nozzle position can be precisely adjusted for various gas species and laser power levels. The mechanism of plasma-control by assist gas was also clarified on the basis of pressure measurement of assist gas, estimation of metallic vapor pressure in the cavity, and monitoring of plasma brightness by using phototransistors. It was found that the effect of assist gas on penetration depth can be divided three regions with the change of the assist gas pressure. No matter what gas species were used, only is the gas pressure slightly higher than the vapor pressure, plasma can be suppressed by forcing the vapor to flow away from the incidental laser beam along the cavity rear wall, then optimum weld beads can be obtained.

Abstract:During high power laser welding partially ionized metal vapor is produced. The plasma over the keyhole absorbs some of the laser power and radiates this energy to the surrounding area. The behavior of positive ions and electrons in the plasma are analyzed and a model is put forward. According to the model a method for removing the plasma by electric-magnetic field is investigated theoretically and experimentally. To increase the magnetic force an external voltage is added between the nozzle and the workpiece. The effect of plasma removing is estimated by elevating the nozzle during welding and measuring the length of deep penetration welding. Experiment results indicate that the efficiency of laser power increases with increasing magnetic field intensity. There is an optimum external voltage to achieve the best driving effect. These results are discussed and analyzed. It is indicated that suitable assisting electric and magnetic fields can reduce the shielding effect of the plasma and increase the efficiency of laser power.

Abstract:High power fibre laser has been receiving attention because of advantages such as high output power, high beam quality and flexible fibre delivery. Studies on mechanism of fibre laser welding will further promote its practical application. In this paper, high speed video observation was used to study the characterization of plasma/vapor induced during bead on plate welding of ZL114 with high power CW fibre laser and to analysis the reason for periodical oscillation of the plasma/vapor. The results show that plasma/vapor induced with high power laser is oscillated periodically at 450-600 µs cycle above the weld pool surface. Shielding gas has little effect on the oscillation cycle. The main reason for periodical oscillation of the plasma/vapor is the oscillation of the keyhole and the weld pool.

Abstract:In order to identify gap and edge defects in laser welding process , plasma visible light signal and infrared signal of molten pool during the process of stainless steel welding was monitored by a self -made optical fiber laser welding on-line monitoring system.And the signal processing methods of filtering and short time Fourier transform were used to analyze the optical signals with different defects and the variation law of time domain and frequency domain with welding defects was obtained.When a gap defect occurred , the time domain amplitude of the visible signal decreased from 1.5V to 0.2V without any components in the range of 1000Hz ~4000Hz.The time domain amplitude of infrared signal decreased from 3.5V to 1.0V without any components in the range of 2000Hz~7000Hz.When an edge defect occurred , the time domain amplitude of the visible signal decreased from 2.0V to 0.5V and the time domain amplitude of infrared signal decreased from 4.0V to 0.5V without any components in the range of 0Hz~1000Hz for both signals.The results show that there is a certain correlation between the visible signal, the infrared signal and the laser welding state.The defects in the laser welding process can be effectively identified by the change of amplitude and frequency of the optical signal.The study has certain application value for actual production.
Simulation of Photoinduced Plasma Behavior in Laser Penetration Welding

Abstract:The photoinduced plasma behavior during laser penetration welding of 6063 aluminum alloy was investigated. Six Mg I lines formed by laser induced plasma were obtained by using multi-channel analyzer, and plasma images were captured by using high-speed imaging device. The data and images were transmitted to an intelligent terminal, and the states of each stage of photoinduced plasma in laser penetration welding were analyzed by using Fluent software. The results show that the laser power density increases with the increase of small hole depth. At the initial stage of laser welding, the temperature of the photoinduced plasma changes greatly, and as the time passes, the plasma temperature tends to be constant. As the welding continues, the instability of the photoinduced plasma is mainly reflected by position fluctuation and scale change of the photoinduced plasma.
Research on plasma in high power carbon dioxide laser welding of ship plate

Abstract:Plasma is produced in deep penetration laser welding. It influences the interaction between laser source and workpiece plate according to laser beam absorption, reflection and refraction etc. Based on micro-focus high speed photograph, dynamic behavior and size of plasma were studied in different laser power and different flow rate of side-assist gas during high power carbon dioxide laser welding of ship plate. It is discovered that the plasma is larger and more unstable with the increase of laser power density. And the whole process is more susceptible to laser supported combustion (LSC), even resulting in welding discontinuity. By increasing the flow rate of side-assist gas, LSC is suppressed and the size of the plasma becomes smaller. Correspondingly, the penetration is slightly deeper with smaller plasma.

Abstract:In order to realize the coupling discharge of the double-TIG arc and improve the utilization efficiency of arc energy, the synchronous induction of laser to the double-arc plasma is studied in this paper. The characteristics of arc plasma shape, electron temperature and density in double-arc welding and hybrid welding are analyzed by means of a high-speed camera and spectrum diagnosis. A physical model is established to discuss the synchronous induction mechanism. The results show that there are four typical position relations among the heat sources, leading to four plasma shape of double-arc. Among them, the synchronous induction only exists in the coupling plasma whose electron density rises by 60.64% compared with ordinary double-arc heat source. When keyhole current is generated in hybrid welding, the sum of the electromagnetic forces among the keyhole current and the two arc currents is the driving force of synchronous induction. When the driving force outnumbers the stiffness of double-arc, the synchronous induction of laser to double-arc occurs.
