Abstract:Optical limiting in C60/PMMA was studied by using a laser pulse with a pulse width of 2 ps at the wavelength of 532 nm, and the three-level model was used for simulation. The C60/PMMA samples used in experiment have respective linear transmissivities of 54% and 33%. The theoretical simulation result based on the singlet excited state absorption model is in agreement with the experimental ones. the results show that the optical limiting is caused by the singlet excited state absorption.

Abstract:We have obtained the characteristics of all-optical switching and modulation of C60 in toluene pumped by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at λ=532.0nm and probed by a CW semiconductor laser at λ=747.0nm, based on nonlinear triplet-triplet absorption in C60. Dynamic processes of switching and modulation are simulated using rate equations, which coincide with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate that the strong reverse saturation which has been observed at high intensity in a C-60 solution, is also manifest at a low intensity. The behavior fits well to a rate equation model based on a six level system with known photophysical parameters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that it can be utilized to generate optical switching and bistability. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:An ultra compact, highly integrated photonic switch with 2 x 3 configuration was designed and fabricated using the thermo-optical effect of polymer materials. By exerting voltage to proper compartment of the electrode, the input light can be switched freely among three output ports. The experiment results show: for the "insufficient reflection" state, the extinction ratio is 16.64dB for the middle output port; for the "bat" state, the extinction ratio for the reflection port is 26.8 dB. The power consumption is on the scale of 100 mW, and varies with different function mode.

Abstract:In this paper, the multimode interference (MMI) coupler is designed as the core part to form optical switches, and the polymer is employed as the waveguide material and its thermo-optical effect is used to control the self-imaging effect of the MMI coupler. The two MMI-based switches with the area-modulated and side-heated configuration are designed and fabricated. It can be found that the components have a small size and low driving power when the switches are designed with the MMI coupler as the core part.

Abstract:A photonic switch of 2×3 structure was designed and fabricated using the thermo-optical effect of polymer materials. By setting sectional electrode and exerting voltage to proper section, we can control the reflection region length and ray propagation trace. Input light can be switched freely among three output ports. The experiment results show that, for the “half-reflection” state, the extinction ratio is 16.6dB for the half-reflection port; and for the “bar” state, the extinction ratio for the reflection port is 26.8dB. The power consumption is on the scale of 100mW and varies with different function mode.

Abstract:Mirrorless transient optical bistability due to reverse saturation absorption in organic materials has been studied. Optical bistability loops have been obtained from theoretical calculation for CuPc (copper phthalocyanine). Increasing absorption optical bistability has been observed in CuPc solutions. Experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical analyses. It was concluded that reverse saturation absorption in organic materials can bring about the realization of mirrorless increasing absorption optical bistability, the stronger the reverse saturation absorption is, the more obvious the optical bistability will be. Reverse saturation absorption in organic materials can be applied to rapid optical switching of medium optical waveguides.
Compact All-Optical Switches Based on Photon-Induced Suppression of Mode Interference

Abstract:An optically activated optical switch based on suppression of mode interference (SMI) is presented. The imaging properties of multi-mode interference (MMI) section in the switch with Y-branch can be modified by a controlling light injection. The switch was simulated by finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. At the wavelength of 1.31 um, the primary experiment showed an extinction ratio of about 8 dB with controlling light power density of 73.5 W/mm2.

Abstract:The dynamic processes of reverse saturable absorption (RSA) in a solution Of C60 are studied in detail by use of rate equations and the light-propagation equation for a five-energy-level model. The RSA experimental results for C60 in toluene solution with a nanosecond-picosecond Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm are consistent with the theoretical simulations. Effects of sample concentration and thickness on RSA and contributions of the singlet and triplet excited states to RSA for various laser-pulse widths and wavelengths are also analyzed. Finally, an all-optical switch based on excited-state nonlinear absorption and the pump-probe technique is implemented.

Abstract:The optical waveguide switch utilizing the principle of total internal reflection (TIR) is a promising structure since its merits such as compact size, digital response characteristic, insensitivity to wavelength and polarization, and so on. In this paper the TIR switch is studied both in theory and in experiment. At first, we give a comprehensive analysis about reflection mechanism in the TIR switch from the following three issues: the grazing incidence of a narrow beam in the free space, the beam reflection in a bounded space, and the beam expansion induced by the reflection in a two-dimensional gradient field of the refractive index decrease. Then based on the analytical works, we successfully fabricate practical TIR switches by utilizing the thermo-optical effect of polymer and the carrier injection effect of GaAs (both the current injection and the photon injection manners are employed). The testing results show that: the extinction ratio of the thermo-optical TIR switch exceeds 35 dB at an power consumption of 80 mW; for the carrier injection TIR switch utilizing the current injection manner, its operation speed is faster than 20 ns and its operation current is about 70 mA.

Abstract:Progress in optical computing, optical communication and optical information processing depends on a large extent of the availability of fast all-optical switches. Most of the all-optical switches utilize nonlinear FP cavity1,2,3. Its absorptive loss is very large because of working on the resonant wavelength, and the switching time is districted by the response time of cavity. In 1990 K. W. Beeson4 presented a novel all-optical switch based on the triplet-triplet absorption in Eosin Y using a CW laser as a pump beam, and obtained μs scale switching time. We developed this kind of switches in C605 whose switch off time was about 250 ns which depends on the lifetime of the first triplet excited state.

Abstract:A complete design scheme and fabrication results of the total-internal-reflection (TIR) thermo-optic polymeric switch are presented for the first time. The measured results of the 1×2 TIR optical switch with an X junction show that the extinction ratio is about 25 dB at the crossing state while the reflecting state can be obtained with a 22 dB extinction ratio by applying a driving power of 158 mW - a driving voltage of 3.2 V and a related electric current of 49.4 mA.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image
