Abstract:Atomic phase coherence (quantum interference) in a multilevel atomic gas exhibits a number of interesting phenomena. Such an atomic quantum coherence effect can be generalized to a quantum-dot molecular dielectric. Two quantum dots form a quantum-dot molecule, which can be described by a three-level.-configuration model {vertical bar 0 >, vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >}, i.e., the ground state of the molecule is the lower level vertical bar 0 > and the highly degenerate electronic states in the two quantum dots are the two upper levels vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >. The electromagnetic characteristics due to the vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > transition can be controllably manipulated by a tunable gate voltage (control field) that drives the vertical bar 2 >-vertical bar 1 > transition. When the gate voltage is switched on, the quantum-dot molecular state can evolve from one steady state (i.e., vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > two-level dressed state) to another steady state (i.e., three-level coherent-population-trapping state). In this process, the electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular dielectric, which is modified by the gate voltage, will also evolve. In this study, the transient evolutional behavior of the susceptibility of a quantum-dot molecular thin film and its reflection spectrum are treated by using the density matrix formulation of the multilevel systems. The present field-tunable and frequency-sensitive electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular thin film, which are sensitive to the applied gate voltage, can be utilized to design optical switching devices.

Abstract:The interface electronic structure of C60/CuPc and C60 heterojunctions on SiO2 and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite has been studied using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and synchrotron based photoelectron spectroscopy. Fermi level pinned to the negative integer charge transfer state of C60 molecules on the standing CuPc film has been observed, while nearly vacuum-level alignment is observed for C60 on the lying CuPc film. We also found small vacuum-level shifts for C60 on both standing and lying F16CuPc films, which can be attributed to the rearrangement of underlying F16CuPc molecules. With the use of orientation-controlled CuPc and F16CuPc thin films, C60 highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels relative to the substrate Fermi level can be tuned from 1.9 eV for C60 on the standing CuPc film to 1.0 eV on the standing F16CuPc film.

Abstract:We examine the photophysics of a colloidal suspension of C(60) particles in a micellar solution of Triton X-100 and water, prepared via a new synthesis which allows high-concentration suspensions. The particle sizes are characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering and found to be somewhat polydisperse in the range of 10-100 nm. The suspension is characterized optically by UV-vis spectroscopy, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, laser flash photolysis, and z-scan. The ground-state absorbance spectrum shows a broad absorbance feature centered near 450 nm which is indicative of colloidal C(60). The transient absorption dynamics, presented for the first time with femtosecond resolution, are very similar to that of thin films of C(60) and indicate a strong quenching of the singlet excited state on short time scales and evidence of little intersystem crossing to a triplet excited state. Laser flash photolysis reveals that a triplet excited-state absorption spectrum, which is essentially identical in shape to that of molecular C(60) solutions, does indeed arise, but with much lower magnitude and somewhat shorter lifetime. Z-scan analysis confirms that the optical response of this material is dominated by nonlinear scattering.

Abstract:The quantum yield of triplet formation (��ISC) and the triplet lifetime (��t) of C60, as well as the quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation (�ա�) by the quenching of the triplet state of C60 and the singlet lifetime (��O) of oxygen are measured by a time-resolved thermal lensing technique. Both ��ISC and �ա� are nearly unity and the lifetimes of both the triplet C60 and the singlet oxygen are in the range of 8-60 ��s and 20��s respectively.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical bistability was observed in a planar optical waveguide made with a 2,9,16,23-tetraoctadecanoylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine-doped polystyrene film. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured with laser pulses of 60-ps pulse width at 532 nm. The switchup and switchdown times were less than 10 and 20 ps, respectively. Abstract:The high flexibility of organic molecules offers great potential for designing the optical properties of light-active materials for the next generation of optoelectronic and photonic applications. However, despite successful implementations of molecular materials in todays' display and photovoltaic technology, many fundamental aspects of the light-to-charge conversion have still to be uncovered. Here, we focus on the ultrafast dynamics of optically excited excitons in C$_{60}$ thin films depending on the molecular coverage and the light-polarization of the optical excitons. Using time- and momentum-resolved photoemission with fs-XUV radiation, we follow the depopulation dynamics in the excited states while simultaneously monitoring the signatures of the excitonic charge character in the molecular valence states. Optical excitation with visible light results in the instantaneous formation of charge-transfer (CT) excitons, which transform stepwise into energetically lower Frenkel-like excitons. While the number and energetic position of energy levels within this cascade process are independent of the molecular coverage and the light polarization of the optical excitation, we find quantitative differences in the depopulation times and the optical excitation efficiency. Our comprehensive study reveals the crucial role of CT excitons for the excited state dynamics of homo-molecular fullerene materials and thin films.

Reverse Saturable Absorption and Optical Limiting Performance of Fullerene-Functionalized Polycarbonates in Femtoseond Time Scale

Abstract:The reverse saturable absorption and the optical limiting (OL) property of fullerene-functionalized polycarbonates (C60–PCs) which were synthesized by a direct reaction of C60 and PC in the presence of AIBN using 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane as the solvent under microwave irradiation (MI) was investigated by z-scan technique in femtosecond scale. Its reverse saturable absorption behavior was believed to being caused by the covalently attached fullerene to the polymer chain and was found to be of the same order as C60. The measured OL results revealed that the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state was larger than that of the ground state, and the ratio of the absorption cross-section of the photo-excited singlet state to that of the ground state was determined by fitting the experimental data to the numerical integration by using the rate equation treatment. These new synthesized materials which are soluble in common organic solvents can be considered as potential sources for further optical applications, especially in ultrashort scale.

Abstract:The C═C photoswitching molecules [1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (DPE), 4-styrylpyridine (SP), and trans-1,2-stilbene (TS)] show favorable photoisomerization characteristics. Although the solid states of photoswitching molecules are usually used in optical devices, their excited state's evolution has been little explored. Here, the excited state's relaxation of DPE, SP, and TS in nanocrystal/microcrystal suspensions as well as in solution phase was studied to uncover the early events of their excited states. The dynamics of nanocrystal/microcrystal suspensions was tremendously accelerated in comparison to the kinetics obtained in the solution for these molecules under excitation. DPE exhibits the slowest decay rate, while SP shows the fastest decay rate in nanocrystal suspensions or solution, suggesting SP may be the best candidate for the photoswitching device. The intermolecular interactions and space restriction of the crystal lead to the acceleration of the excited state's evolution for DPE, SP, and TS. This provides new insight into the design of optical materials.

Abstract:Ultrafast third-order nonlinearity of C60-poly tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate charge transfer complex was measured using femtosecond optical Kerr gate at both 640 nm and 820 nm wavelength. Abstract:The first observations of weak room-temperature photoluminescence of a new C-60 derivative: C-60(NH(CHCOOMe)(2)) (1) and its fluorescence quenching by concentration and N,N-dimethyl aniline in CHCl3 solution are reported. Its singlet energy and fluorescence lifetime were estimated to be 40.9 kcal/mol and 1.2 +/- 0.3 ns, respectively.

Abstract:The dissociation of excitons at indium tin oxide (ITO)∕C60 interface is studied by means of transient photovoltage measurements. An abnormal polarity change of transient photovoltage from positive to negative upon pulsed laser irradiation is observed, indicating that the exciton dissociation at ITO∕C60 interface results in holes injected into ITO and electrons left in the C60 film, opposite to that occurring at ITO/NPB and ITO/CuPc interfaces. It is confirmed that C60 has a moderately strong ability of donating holes to ITO during the dissociation process of the excitons at the ITO∕C60 interface. Moreover the long term transient photovoltage (t>10ns) and its polarity can be tuned by applying external bias on the device, which further proves the validity of the model proposed to explain the polarity change of the transient photovoltage.

Abstract:A dynamical scheme is employed to simulate the self-trapping of the exciton in C-60. During the self-trapping process, due to the bond distortion, two gap states Al-1u and A(2u) are separated from the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital respectively From the evolutions of the bond distortion and these two levels the relaxation time of the self-trapping exciton is about 90 fs. It is noticed that the relaxation of the exciton is much quicker than that of the charge transfer in C-60.

Abstract:The reverse saturable absorption effect of fullerene C60 was experimentally studied with incompletely self-mode-locked laser. Experimental setup and method for measuring the reverse saturation property of C60 methylbenzene solution were described. The results showed that optical limiting effect of C60 methylbenzene solution at 1064 nm is a double-photon process, and the real-time experimental result is the same as that observed in an average process. The reverse saturable absorption mechanism of fullerene C60 was discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The superfluorescence effect has received extensive attention due to the many-body physics of quantum correlation in dipole gas and the optical applications of ultrafast bright radiation field based on the cooperative quantum state. Here, we demonstrate not only to observe the superfluorescence effect but also to control the cooperative state of the excitons ensemble by externally applying a regulatory dimension of coupling light fields. A new quasi-particle called cooperative exciton-polariton is revealed in a light-matter hybrid structure of a perovskite quantum dot thin film spin-coated on a Distributed Bragg Reflector. Above the nonlinear threshold, polaritonic condensation occurs at a nonzero momentum state on the lower polariton branch owning to the vital role of the synchronized excitons. The phase transition from superfluorescence to polariton condensation exhibits typical signatures of a decrease of the linewidth, an increase of the macroscopic coherence as well as an accelerated radiation decay rate. These findings are promising for opening new potential applications for super-brightness and unconventional coherent light sources and could enable the exploitation of cooperative effects for quantum optics.

Abstract:The static study has shown that the excited state with electron-hole pair in C-60 can cause the distortion of the bond structure to form a polaron-like exciton with symmetry D-5d This paper further reveals the relaxation process from the initial electron-hole pair state to the polaron-like exciton by solving the dynamical equations. The relaxation time of this dynamical process can be determined from the time-dependent band distortion with time step 4 femtoseconds.

Abstract:The optical limiting properties of a cubane-like transition-metal cluster compound (n-Bu4N)3 [MoAg3BrI3S4] were measured at 532 nm and 1064 nm using Q-switched laser pulses. Its optical limiting capability is better than that of C60 at 532 nm. The transient all-optical switching for this material in air-saturated acetonitrile was demonstrated. The control light is 532 nm pulse laser. The signal light is 632.8 nm CW laser. The lifetime of the excited state, about 600 ns, can be deduced from the switching time. It is about 2 times that of C60(T1) in air-saturated toluene.
Ultrafast nonadiabatic electron dynamics in photoexcited C60: A comparative study among DFT exchange-correlation functionals

Abstract:The non-radiative electron-relaxation dynamics in C$_{60}$ molecule is studied after selective initial photoexcitations. The methodology includes nonadibabtic molecular simulation combined with time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical surface hopping approach. Results of treating the DFT exchange-correlation (xc) interaction by the non-empirical Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE), hybrid PBE0, and hybrid Becke 3-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) functional are compared. Even though some differences in the details are found, all three functionals produce qualitatively similar unoccupied band structures in the ground state. The model-dependent differences in the ultrafast population dynamics, including the occurrences of transient entrapment of population, are studied systematically. The trend of the results demonstrates a universal dependence on the structure of unoccupied band offering a spectroscopic route to probe this structure. Results can be verified, as well as the best xc model for quantitative accuracy can be determined, by comparing with ultrafast transient absorption or time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. From the computational standpoint, the study facilitates method optimization to simulate nonadiabatic relaxation dynamics in technologically important fullerene derivatives.

Laser-induced Ultrafast Dynamics in C_60

Abstract:When a laser shines on C 6 0 , electrons are initially excited out of the occupied states, and the laser energy is mainly absorbed into the electron system. After the laser pulse is over, the lattice and the electron systems start to exchange energy periodically. A time-dependent density-matrix simulation reveals that depending on the incident laser frequency and pulse duration, the absorbed energy exhibits a higher-order dependence on the field amplitude, consistent with the experimental findings. Interestingly, due to the Stark effect, on resonance the absorbed energy may decrease with an increase in the field amplitude, which is important for future optical limiting applications.
