Abstract:An injector that can deliver a high-brightness electron beam is indispensable to the free electron laser. For this purpose, several kinds of laser-driven photocathodes and some thermionic cathodes and field emission cathodes are applied. However, the demands for the photoemissivity are usually in conflict with the stability of the laser-driven photocathodes. In order to find a good compromise between them, the feasibility of using an oxide-coated cathode (BaO, SrO, Al), which is a thermionic cathode, as a laser-driven photocathode was studied. It was found that when the activated oxide-coated cathode is illuminated with pulsed laser of 0.53m or 0.16m in wavelength, the electron emission is obviously observable which can be interpreted by the postulation of the existence of barium ultrafine particles in the cathode.
