Abstract:In this paper the preparation processes of SiO2 gel containing C60 were reported. Using a Nd:YAG laser with 10 ns pulse duration and 532 nm wavelength, the optical limiting behavior of the C60 doped in SiO2 gel was measured and demonstrated. The laser induced damage threshold of the material can be higher than 7J/cm2.

Abstract:The preparation process of using the methylbenzene as the solvent to impregnate and diffuse the C60 into the porous silica glass was presented here. The absorption spectra of the porous silica glass containing C60 were determined after the methylbenzene had been removed. The antisaturation absorption performance and the optical limiting effect of the composite material, as well as their dependences on the laser wavelength were measured and studied through the use of a Q-switched (10ns pulse) Nd:YAG laser (532nm). The damage threshold of the glass containing C60 can be achieved to 9J/cm2��10ns.

Abstract:In this work, new hybrid organic-inorganic composites of C-60-NH2(CH2)(3)Si(OC2H5)(3) (C-60-3-Aminopropyl-triethoxy-silane,C-60-KH550), C-60-NH2(CH2)(3) Si(OC2K5)(3)-CH2OCHCH2O(CH2)(3)Si(OCH3)(3) (C-60-3-Aminopropyl-triethoxysilane-3-Glcidoxypropltrimethoxysilane,C-60-KH550-KH560),and C-60-NH2(CH2)(3)Si(OC2H5)(3)CH2OCHCH2-O-(CH2)(3)-Si(OCH3)(3)-(CH3)(2)Si(OCH3)(2) (C-60-3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane-3-Glcidoxypropltrimethoxy-silaneDi-ethoxy-dimethyl-silane, C-60-KH550-KH560-DTDS) were synthesized with sol-gel processes. The infrared absorption spectra of the composites were measured. Using a Nd:YAG laser with 10ns pulse duration and 532nm wavelength, the optical limiting behaviors of the above composites were demonstrated and disscussed. As optical limiters, the laser induced damage thresholds of the slices made from such hybrid materials can be up to 5-6J/cm(2).

Abstract:Ultrafast thermomechanical responses of silicon thin films due to ultrashort-pulsed laser irradiation were investigated using an atomic-level hybrid method coupling the molecular dynamics and the ultrafast two-step energy transport model. The dynamic reflectivity and absorption were considered, and the effects of laser fluence and pulse duration on the thermomechanical response were studied. It was found that both the carrier temperature and number density rapidly increase to their maximum while the lattice temperature rises at a much slower rate. The ultrafast laser heating could induce a strong stress wave in the film, with the maximum compressive and tensile stress occurring near the front and back surfaces, respectively. For laser pulses of the same duration, the higher the laser fluence is, the higher the carrier temperature and density and lattice temperature are induced. For the same laser fluence, a longer pulse generally produces lower carrier density and temperatures and weaker stress shock strength. However, for the fluence of 0.2 J/cm(2), the lowest lattice temperature was simulated for a 100-fs pulse compared to the 1-ps and 5-ps pulses, due to the increase of reflectivity by high carrier density. It is also shown that the optical properties as functions of lattice temperature usually employed are not suited for modeling ultrafast laser interactions with silicon materials.

Abstract:With the development of laser technology, the research of novel laser protection materials is of great significance. In this work, dispersible siloxene nanosheets (SiNSs) with a thickness of about 1.5 nm are prepared by the top-down topological reaction method. Based on the Z-scan and optical limiting testing under the visible-near IR ranges nanosecond laser, the broad-band nonlinear optical properties of the SiNSs and their hybrid gel glasses are investigated. The results show that the SiNSs have outstanding nonlinear optical properties. Meanwhile, the SiNSs hybrid gel glasses also exhibit high transmittance and excellent optical limiting capabilities. It demonstrates that SiNSs are promising materials for broad-band nonlinear optical limiting and even have potential applications in optoelectronics.
Control of the damage threshold of Si via a SiO2 coating upon irradiation with Mid-IR femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract:A key issue in the use of high-power mid-infrared (Mid-IR) laser sources for a plethora of applications is the investigation of the exciting laser driven physical phenomena taking place in materials coated with dielectric films. Here, we present a theoretical investigation of the ultrafast processes and thermal response upon excitation of two-layered complexes consisting of fused silica thin films placed on silicon substrates with ultrashort pulsed lasers in the Mid-IR spectral regime. Through the development of a theoretical model, we demonstrate that the control of the underlying ultrafast phenomena and the damage threshold (DT) of the substrate are achieved via an appropriate modulation of the thickness of the SiO2 film. It is shown that a decrease of DT by up to 27% compared to the absence of coating is feasible emphasising the impact of coatings of a lower refractive index than the substrate. Besides this, it is demonstrated that no absorption of energy occurs within the SiO2 layer, therefore the dynamics of the reflectivity of the two-layered complex is directly associated with the electron excitation in the substrate. These remarkable predictions can be employed for the development of new optical coatings and components for nonlinear optics and photonics for a large range of Mid-IR laser-based applications.

Abstract:A 60 kW electron beam is used to study the microstructure and optical property evolutions as well as laser induced damage threshold of fused silica after irradiation at room temperature. Optical microscopic results indicate that cracks appear at the surface of SiO2 after electron beam irradiation, owing to the thermal effect, and that the crack density and size increase with increasing radiation dose. The morphology of the surface cracks is analyzed by using atomic force microscope and the width of crack is about 1 μm. In addition, there are a large number of debris particles with sizes of 0.1-1 μm on the surface. From the optical absorption spectrum of each of all samples, a weak absorption peak at 394 nm is observed and the absorbance increases at the beginning then decreases with increasing electron-radiation dose. Before and after irradiation, three absorption bands at 460 nm, 496 nm and 520 nm are clearly observed and their intensities first increase and then decrease, which is consistent with the results of absorption spectra. The effect of electron dose on the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) at 355 nm is investigated and the results indicate that the LIDT decreases with increasing dose. At the lower electron doses, the color centers are responsible for the decrease of LIDT. However, at the higher electron doses, the decrease of LIDT is due to the light modulation and absorption induced by microscale cracks and debris particles at the surface of irradiated fused silica.

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the most promising third-generation semiconductor materials owing to its superior comprehensive performances. However, high-efficient polishing of the hard-to-process SiC substrate remains a challenge due to its high hardness and high chemical stability. In this paper, the SiC substrate was irradiated by femtosecond laser to enhance the subsequent chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) efficiency. The effects of different laser processing parameters such as laser fluence, focus position, scanning velocity and scanning interval on the surface morphology of SiC were discussed. The influences of the surrounding conditions on the morphology of laser-processed surfaces were also studied. Results show that the Si–O compound was formed on the laser-irradiated SiC surfaces, which is beneficial for the subsequent CMP process due to their lower hardness. Furthermore, the uniform periodic ripple structures formed on the laser-irradiated SiC surface also help to improve the surface flatness. Furthermore, fewer surface defects and lower surface roughness can be achieved in an oxygen atmosphere, which was due to the oxygen participating in the photochemical reaction.

Abstract:SiO2 sol-gel antireflection film coated on fused silica can reduce the reflection loss and improve the transmittance of the optical component, although it is still prone to laser induced damage. Laser conditioning is an effective way to improve the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of SiO2 sol-gel antireflection film. In this paper, single-layer SiO2 sol-gel antireflection films pretreated by triple-frequency laser with different parameters are characterized by the macroscopical parameters, such as transmittance, refractive index, and thickness. The law of surface modification and the defect removal mechanism of the SiO2 sol-gel antireflection film by laser conditioning are obtained. It is found that laser conditioning can reduce the thickness of the film and introduce densification. In addition, laser conditioning can eliminate micro-defects, such as vacancies and voids in the preparation of SiO2 sol-gel antireflection films, which is the main reason to improve the laser damage resistance of films. Finally, the laser conditioning process with three step laser energy combinations of (0.2–0.6–1.0) Fth0 (zero damage threshold) is the best one to obtain high transmittance, and excellent effects on structure modification and defect removal of films. The research in this paper provides data support for the engineering application and mechanism research of laser conditioning.

Abstract:Oxygen ions, with an energy of 70 keV, and doses ranging from 5×1013 to 5×1015 cm-2, were implanted into 6H SiC. The damage energies were calculated as 0.93-93 eV/atom with the doses respectively. The dielectric function obtained from spectroscopic ellipsometry were quite sensitive to ion irradiation of the surface, while the first order Raman spectroscopy decreased in intensity with increasing O+ ion dose. The damage behavior characterized by optical measurements was in good agreement with characterization by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and channeling and atomic force microscopy.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity of C60/NH2-(CH2)3-Si(OC2H5)3 sol and gel excited by a Nd:YAG laser with 150 ps pulse duration, 1.06μm wavelength and 1 Hz repeat was measured by using Z-scanning technique. Theoretical fits from the data give the value of n2 =5.6×10-12 esu for the sol and 6.2×10-12 esu for the gel. The higher laser transmission of the gel at the focus than that of the sol was attributed to the strong nonlinear scattering of the sol.

Abstract:With the wide application of intense lasers, the protection of human eyes and detectors from laser damage is becoming more and more strict. In this paper, we study the nonlinear optical limiting (OL) properties of porous carbon with a super large specific surface area (2.9 × 103 m2/g) using the nanosecond Z-scan technique. Compared to the traditional OL material C60, the porous carbon material shows an excellent broadband limiting effect, and the limiting thresholds correspond to 0.11 J/cm2 for 532 nm and 0.25 J/cm2 for 1064 nm pulses, respectively. The nonlinear scattering experiments showed that the OL behavior was mainly attributed to the nonlinear scattering effect, which is caused by the rapid growth and expansion of bubbles in the dispersion induced by laser irradiation, and the scattered light distribution is consistent with the results of Mie’s scattering. These results suggest that porous carbon materials are expected to be applied to the field of laser protection in the future to further protect the human eye and precision optical instruments.

Abstract:γ-ray radiation effect on sol-gel silica films was investigated at different absorbed doses ranging from 10 kGy to 1000 kGy. The defect and microstructure evolutions of silica films were analyzed to understand the performance degradation behavior and mechanism of the γ-ray irradiated silica films. The cracks appear on the silica film surface and further expand at larger γ-ray absorbed dose, while surface roughness slightly decreases. During γ-ray irradiation, the thermal effect and the increased rate of diffusion-controlled process lead to the condensation of Si-OH groups and the recombination of ODCs. However, the ionization of atoms leads to generation and accumulation of E′ centers and NBOHCs. γ-ray irradiation leads to the reductions of bond lengths and bond angles of Si-O-Si groups, thus causing the densification of films. The refractive index and mechanical property firstly enhance and then reduce with the increase of absorbed dose associated with the change of silica film density. After γ-ray irradiation, the decreased contact angle and increased surface free energy indicate the reduction of anti-pollution ability of silica films. The dose-dependent surface quality, defects and mechanical properties determine the variation in laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of silica film. The results provide a reference to control the structural damage and performance degradation of silica films, which is very important for the research of safe operation of high-power laser facilities for inertial confinement fusion (ICF).

Abstract:The laser induced interaction of C_(60) molecules with Si(111) 7×7 and Si(100) 2×1 reconstruction surfaces were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. The morphology of C_(60) on Si(111) 7×7 and Si(100) 2×1 before and after bombarded with laser of wavelength of 266nm were compared. The results show that after laser bombarding the morphology of C_(60) molecules on the Si(111)7×7 surface were nearly unchanged, even there were clearly increasing defects of Si(111) 7×7 surface. On the contrary, the C_(60) molecules on the Si(100)2×1 surface were broken and the sample surface became very disorder.

Abstract:Silicon Carbide (SiC) is the predominant substrate material for optoelectronic-integrated devices. However, it challenges the wafer-slicing process because of its high hardness, brittleness, and other material characteristics. Laser processing has gained prominence as the primary method, leveraging its merits of high efficiency, precision, and micro-destructiveness. In this study, a finite element method is applied to calculate the temperature field distribution resulting from the electric field of a Gaussian beam. The simulation considers laser propagation inside 4H-SiC, non-linear absorption, and spherical aberration induced by the refractive index of the material. The influence of laser pulse energy and focusing depth are considered. The results indicate that the modification depths decrease with the increasing focusing depth. With the increase of laser pulse energy, the depth of the modification layer increases continuously. Moreover, an experimental setup has been devised to furnish valuable references in validating the proposed model.

Optical Emission from C60-molecule-coupled Si Nanocrystallites

Abstract:Using C60 molecule as a kind of surface-passivated agent to modify the electronic structure of Si nanocrystallites in porous silicon, we disclose that this kind of C60/nanocrystalline Si coupling system can show a strong blue emission at approximately 460 nm when stored in air for more than one year. After a full characterization of the photoluminescence properties, we propose a luminescent center in the SiOx layer at the surface of a Si nanocrystallite. It is a pair consisting of an oxygen vacancy and an interstitial oxygen. The interstitial oxygen also forms a peroxy linkage with a neighboring lattice oxygen. Radiative recombination of carriers photogenerated from Si nanocrystallite cores in the luminescent centers results in the observed blue photoluminescence. Neutron irradiation experiments support our assignment of the blue emission mechanism. This work improves the understanding of the origin of blue emission from silicon/oxygen-related nanostructured materials.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties of C60[NH2–(CH2)3–Si(OC2H5)3]3 sol and gel were investigated by femtosecond optical Kerr gate technique at 820 nm. The nonresonant third-order optical susceptibilities were measured to be 1.4×10−13 and 1.6×10−13 esu for the C60[NH2–(CH2)3–Si(OC2H5)3]3 sol and gel, respectively, which are two orders larger than that of C60 molecule.

Abstract:Optical limiting behavior through reverse saturable absorption for the solution of a buckminsterfullerene C60/C70 mixture (85% C60 and 15% C70) in toluene has been observed with 10 ns, 530 nm laser pulses. The solution concentration dependence of optical limiting degree is investigated by using the solutions of various transmissivities. The strong influence of the triplet state quenched in the existence of 3O2 is also investigated by comparing the optical limiting process for the argon-degased solution and the not argon-degased solution. The results indicate that buckminsterfullerence is a kind of promising material for light protector.

Abstract:The preparation of C60-doped silica aerogels by the sol-gel process is described in this article. Fourier transfer infrared spectra, time-of-flight mass spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy showed that C60 was incorporated into silica aerogels, and the C60 structure was retained in the preparation process. The C60-doped silica aerogels emitted intense visible light (2.10 eV) under Ar+ laser (488 nm) excitation at room temperature, and the photoluminescence peak was “blueshifted” when compared with C60’s. The blueshift is explained based on a quantum confinement effect.
