Abstract:Photonic circuits are the key to advanced functionality in future optical systems, as they efficiently process terabit/s data streams. This paper reviews how photonic circuit topologies have evolved to support high-spectral efficiency modulation formats, including: all-optical optical frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM), discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM), Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing, (NWDM), orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM, OTDM), chirped-OFDM, and quasi-Nyquist signals. The importance of the order of components such as modulators, delays, and filters within these circuits is stressed, as simple changes to the circuit topology have significant impacts on the spectra of the signals, and the required bandwidths of the modulators.

Abstract:The paper presents the sorts, features and applications of semiconductor all-optical switches. According to their structures, the switches can be divided into planar-type and waveguide-type. According to their operation principles, they can be divided into phase-shift-type and frequency-shift-type. The high efficiency of all-optical switching has been proved in 100 Gbit/s optical transmission experiment.

Abstract:All-optical signal processing has always been critical assistance for the flexible optical networks (FONs) development which realizes various signal processing functions in all-optical domain avoiding electronic bottlenecks. The sustained demands for the transmission capacity and network functions drive the optical networks to enlarge the bandwidth, extend formats and increase network structures. The optical vectors are multiplexed in four domains at least in practical which are amplitude, phase, polarization and wavelength, and more multiplexing technologies are under researching. Moreover, various kinds of optical networks are employed to fulfill the constantly emerging applications such as core, metro and access networks. Facing the higher-order modulation formats, multiple multiplexing technologies and more and more complicated network structure, the future FON needs to have the feature of modulation format transparency, bandwidth transparency, wavelength transparency (3T), multi-function, multi-channel, multi-network (3M), self-perceiving, self-learning, self-adapting (3S). The transmission capacity, network flexibility and efficiency will always be the critical index for the whole network performance. The all-optical signal processing technologies have great potential in realizing the FON with the feature of 3T, 3M and 3S to process the multiple multiplexing optical signals and the problems among various optical networks. In this paper, the future FON features including 3T, 3M and 3S are introduced in detail, and the key issues in the ultra-large-capacity FON (e.g., 400G FON) are analyzed including transmission distance, flexible connecting and performance monitoring. Then, the crucial all-optical signal processing technologies and the principle and important applications of the phase-sensitive amplifier are introduced. Finally, the current existing problems and future developing trend for the all-optical signal processing technologies are discussed.

Abstract:Data-processing techniques in spectroscopy are fundamental and powerful analytical tools for lots of practical applications. In the age of big data, high-speed data-processing in spectroscopy is in urgent need, especially for the real-time analysis/feedback of data stream of spectroscopy or the capture of non-repetitive/rare phenomena in fast dynamic process. So far, intensive researches focus on high-speed processing of light signal in time/spatial domain but few people find a way to do it in spectral domain. Here, we report an optical computing technology for high-speed optical spectrum processing with features of real time, multiple functions, all-fiber configuration and immunity to electromagnetic interference. The software-controlled system could perform as, but not limited to, the first-order (or arbitrary fractional-order) differentiator/integrator/Hilbert transformer and tunable band-pass filter, respectively, to handle spectral data rapidly. High-speed processing of optical spectrum at a rate of 10,000,000 times per second is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent works in 100 Gb/s signal generation and processing. A high-speed 100 Gb/s system with on-off keying (OOK) modulation format is implemented by using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) method. As modifications of this system, simultaneous multicolor optical signal generation and 100 Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ)-to-non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format conversion are presented. We also demonstrate basic all-optical signal processing functions of 100 GHz clock recovery and 100 Gb/s all-optical 2R generation based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs).

Abstract:The recently reported high spectral efficiency (SE) and high-baud-rate signal transmission are all based on digital coherent optical communications and digital signal processing (DSP). DSP simplifies the reception of advanced modulation formats and also enables the major electrical and optical impairments to be processed and compensated in the digital domain, at the transmitter or receiver side. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on high-speed signal generation and detection and also show the progress on DSP for high-speed signal detection. We also report the latest progress on multi-core and multi-mode multiplexing.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the ultrafast all-optical switching in optical networks. All-optical switching takes advantage of a nonlinear interaction between optical waves. The nonlinearity in a variety of materials including fiber, semiconductors, and crystals like lithium niobate has been used to demonstrate all-optical switching. The chapter presents some key techniques developed for ultrafast switching and experimental results demonstrating their switching capabilities. The semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is a key component for optical signal processing in optical communication and networks. SOA-based devices are compact and offer the possibility for monolithic integration together with other photonic devices. The short length of the SOA reduced the problem of phase mismatch. SOAs are used as building blocks in all-optical demultiplexers, switches, wavelength converters, memories, and dispersion compensators. With the further development of SOA fabrication technologies, SOAs with low polarization sensitivity and high saturation output power have been developed, resulting in improved performance. The chapter also describes the use of ultra-high-speed all-optical switches in several applications.

Abstract:We present some optical signal processing methods for optical time-division multiplexing, based on electro-optic modulators. Dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator and time-lens-based signal processing for optical frequency comb generation, optical Nyquist pulse generation and time-domain demultiplexing are realized. Multifunctional optoelectronic oscillators which are capable of performing simultaneous electrical clock recovery, optical clock recovery and demultiplexing are demonstrated with modulators embedded as the key components.

Abstract:Digital signal processing is the core functional block in beyond-100G transmission systems with a high symbol rate and/or high spectral efficiency. We review recent progress on high symbol rate signal generation and detection, and corresponding advanced algorithms for signal equalization and compensation at the transmitters (Tx) and the receivers (Rx), respectively. Thanks to the joint Tx-side optical pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and Rx-side partial response maximum likelihood sequence estimation, significant performance improvement can be achieved by reducing the penalty caused by bandwidth limitations of the optical and electronic components. A joint pre-EQ and look-up table predistortion technique is also reviewed in this paper, which is demonstrated to be an effective method for mitigating devices' nonlinearity impairment. We exemplify how these advanced algorithms enable high symbol rate beyond-100G transmission systems with signal generation based on either electronic time-division multiplexing or digital-to-analog converters.

Abstract:High-speed optoelectronic devices are key components of modern fiber communication systems, and the backbone of information technology. In this paper, we present our work on high-speed devices over the past decades, including high-performance semiconductor lasers and integrated light sources, wideband electro-optic modulators, high saturation power photodetectors, and their applications in both fiber communications and microwave photonics. Gain-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) lasers were fabricated with high single-mode yield. Electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs) were demonstrated based on identical epitaxial layer integration scheme, including single channel 40 Gb/s EMLs, and 4 × 25 and 4 × 56 Gb/s EML arrays. Both InP and thin-film lithium niobate based low half-wave voltage electro-optic modulators with modulation bandwidth over 40 GHz were demonstrated. Back-illuminated modified uni-traveling-carrier photodetectors (MUTC-PDs) with high saturation power and bandwidth exceeding 100 GHz were developed. Applications of high-speed optoelectronic devices in fiber-optic links and sub-THz wave generation are presented.
Study on the properties of high speed optical fiber communication systems

Abstract:The transmission properties of high speed IM/DD optical fiber communication systems are studied. Effects of optical path dispersion and laser phase noise on systems are analyzed and discussed. The results show that for large laser phase noise, there will be saturation phenomena on the curve of bit-error-rate vs averaging received optical power. By choosing the working conditions of laser diode properly, we designed and realized a 2.5 Gb/s module of an optical transmitter and a receiver experimentally. An experiment of repeaterless optical signal transmission over 109 km conventional single mode fiber at 1.55 ��m was achieved with receiver sensitivity of -31.5dB (bit-error-rate as 1��10-10). By employing EDFA to overcome the fiber loss, we realized non-regenerator 2.5 Gb/s transmission over 180 km conventional single mode fiber.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.

Abstract:The achievable information rates of optical communication networks have been widely increased over the past four decades with the introduction and development of optical amplifiers, coherent detection, advanced modulation formats, and digital signal processing techniques. These developments promoted the revolution of optical communication systems and the growth of Internet, towards the direction of high-capacity and long-distance transmissions. The performance of long-haul high-capacity optical fiber communication systems is significantly degraded by transmission impairments, such as chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, laser phase noise and Kerr fiber nonlinearities. With the entire capture of the amplitude and phase of the signals using coherent optical detection, the powerful compensation and effective mitigation of the transmission impairments can be implemented using the digital signal processing in electrical domain. This becomes one of the most promising techniques for next-generation optical communication networks to achieve a performance close to the Shannon capacity limit. This chapter will focus on the introduction and investigation of digital signal processing employed for channel impairments compensation based on the coherent detection of optical signals, to provide a roadmap for the design and implementation of realtime optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:To meet the constant demands of high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure, data rates beyond 1 terabit per second per wavelength channel and optical multiplexing are widely applied. However, these features pose challenges for existing data acquisition and optical performance monitoring techniques because of bandwidth limitation and signal synchronization. We designed an approach that would address these limitations by optically converting the frequency limit to an unlimited time axis and combining this with a chirped coherent detection to innovatively obtain the full-field spectrum. With this approach, we demonstrated a real-time Fourier-domain optical vector oscilloscope, with a 3.4-terahertz bandwidth and a 280-femtosecond temporal resolution over a 520-picosecond record length. In addition to on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying signals (128 gigabits per second), quadrature phase-shift keying wavelength division–multiplexed signals (4 × 160 gigabits per second) are simultaneously observed. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate some high-precision measurements, which indicate them as a promising scientific and industrial tool in high-speed optical communication and ultrafast optical measurement.
