Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion is investigated using fourwave mixing in silicon waveguides. The influences of nonlinear losses caused by two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced free-carrier absorption on the conversion efficiency and phase-matching condition are analyzed. The conversion bandwidth is tempted to enhance by optimizing the waveguide geometry and using the two-pump regime. And finally an angled-polarization pump is used to realize the polarization-independent wavelength conversion by eliminating the polarization discrepancy between the TE and TM modes.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM)-based wavelength conversion in silicon nanowire waveguides are numerically investigated by considering the power-attenuated phase-matched condition due to the linear loss and the nonlinear loss caused by two-photon absorption and free carrier absorption effects. The power-attenuated FWM is theoretically analyzed, and the influences of the linear and nonlinear losses on the wavelength conversion performance are evaluated. After analyzing the dependence of the conversion efficiency and bandwidth on the waveguide length and incident pump power, the global optimized solution is achieved by considering the conversion efficiency and bandwidth simultaneously. The optimization result is demonstrated to be tightly related to the linear and nonlinear losses in the silicon nanowire waveguides.

Abstract:We theoretically present and experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength multicasting based on cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers only using a single pump. The cascaded FWM effect is analyzed based on the sum amplitude method, which overcomes the limitation of the number of analyzed idlers, and the performance of the wavelength multicasting is evaluated. By using a continuous wave pump and a pulse train as the signal, multiple-order idlers are experimentally generated and the patterns of 6 multicasting channels are measured. Regardless of the dynamic region of the tunable filter, this method has the potential to realize more multicasting channels, especially when higher pump and signal powers are used.

Abstract:Silicon photonic devices based on complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible technologies have shown attractive performances on very-large-scale monolithic optoelectronic integration, high speed modulation and switching, and efficient off-chip optical coupling. This paper presents the recent progress on fast silicon optical modulation, wavelength-insensitive optical switching and efficient optical coupling techniques in our group. Several CMOS-compatible silicon optical couplers with different structures have been developed, showing the highest coupling efficiency of 65%. Broadband silicon-based optical switches with sub-nanosecond switching on-off time are experimentally realized. Silicon modulators with novel PN junctions are demonstrated with the speed up to 50 Gb s −1 .

Abstract:In this paper, we report a scheme to achieve an all-optical multiple-function logic unit including OR and AND gates for 10Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) signals based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide. The functions of the logic OR and AND gates are demonstrated simultaneously using 10-bit OOK sequences. The eye diagrams of the OR and AND signals are realized experimentally as the incident signals are both modulated by OOK sequences originating from 2(31)-1 pseudorandom binary sequences.

Abstract:We report all-optical wavelength conversion and multicasting for a 20 Gb/s (2×10 Gb/s) polarization-multiplexed (Pol-MUX) nonreturn-to-zero amplitude-shift keying signal using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a silicon waveguide. The temporal waveforms and eye diagrams demodulated from both polarization channels of the converted idler are clearly observed. Moreover, the wavelength multicasting of the Pol-MUX signal is also demonstrated by using two incident pumps.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:Silicon core fibers represent a versatile platform for all-fiber integrated nonlinear optical applications. This paper describes the state of the art in four-wave mixing-based parametric amplification, and wavelength conversion in silicon fibers that have been tapered to improve the material quality, and engineer the dispersion profile. Fibers with submicron core dimensions have been fabricated, and used to demonstrate high gain parametric amplification in the C-Band, and broadband wavelength conversion extending out to the S-, and L-bands. The potential to use these fibers for all-optical signal processing of $20\,$Gbit/s data signals has also been demonstrated, with a robust all-fiber coupling scheme presented to improve the efficiency, and practicality of these devices. These results highlight the potential of silicon core fibers for use in nonlinear signal processing within future telecommunication systems.

Abstract:All optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a SOA for OFDM optical signal is theoretically and experimentally investigated.2 Gbit/s OFDM is used to modulate directly on the signal lightwave by an external intensity modulator.The modulated signal lightwave and the parallel pumps are coupled and then injected into the SOA for wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM).Experimental result shows that the newly converted wavelength sideband carries OFDM signals and its conversion efficiency relates with the wavelength spacing between the pumps,the wavelength spacing and polarization angle between the pumps and signal lightwave.The BER curves and receive constellation are also measured.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:An all-optical wavelength conversion method for telecommunication-band mode-division multiplexing (MDM) signals is proposed in integrated silicon waveguides by using the four-wave mixing effect with a dual-mode pump. By engineering the dispersion profile of the integrated silicon waveguide, the phase-matching conditions are realized simultaneously for the TE01 mode and the TE11 mode of the MDM signal in the telecommunication band, and they can be converted to the idler modes simultaneously. In a 1.2-cm-long waveguide, the 3-dB conversion bandwidth reaches 58 nm with a conversion efficiency of -22.3 dB pumped by a 100-mW TE01 and 105-mW TE11 pump source.
