Abstract:Photonic circuits are the key to advanced functionality in future optical systems, as they efficiently process terabit/s data streams. This paper reviews how photonic circuit topologies have evolved to support high-spectral efficiency modulation formats, including: all-optical optical frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM), discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM), Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing, (NWDM), orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM, OTDM), chirped-OFDM, and quasi-Nyquist signals. The importance of the order of components such as modulators, delays, and filters within these circuits is stressed, as simple changes to the circuit topology have significant impacts on the spectra of the signals, and the required bandwidths of the modulators.

Abstract:We present experimental results on using optical transmission technologies such as I&Q modulators, digital coherent receivers, heterodyne up-conversion in fast photodiodes, to generate, transmit and detect high capacity wireless transmission. Both OFDM and QAM modulation formats are tested in the W-achieving capacities up to 100-Gbps with seamless optical fiber-wireless conversion.

Abstract:This study explores the potential of long-wave infrared free-space optical (FSO) transmission that leverages multilevel signals to attain high spectral efficiency. The FSO transmission system consists of a directly modulated-quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) operating at 9.15 μm and a mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector. To fully understand the system, we conduct measurements on the DM-QCL chip and MCT detector and assess the overall amplitude response of the DM-QCL, MCT detector, and all electrical components. We apply various signals, including on-off keying (OOK), 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), 6-level PAM (PAM6), and 8-level PAM (PAM8) to maximize the bit rate and spectral efficiency of the FSO transmission. Through a two-dimensional sweeping of the laser bias current and MCT detector photovoltage, we optimize the transmission performance. At the optimal operation point, the FSO system achieved impressive results which are up to 6 Gbaud OOK, 3.5 Gbaud PAM4, 3 Gbaud PAM6, and 2.7 Gbaud PAM8 signal transmissions, with a bit error rate performance below 6.25% overhead hard decision-forward error correction limit when the DM-QCL operates at 10 °C. We also evaluate the eye diagrams and stability of the system to showcase its remarkable transmission performance. Our findings suggest that the DM-QCL and MCT detector-based FSO transceivers offer a highly competitive solution for the next generation of optical wireless communication systems.
Beyond 100 Gb/s Optoelectronic Terahertz Communications: Key Technologies and Directions

Abstract:The terahertz band (0.1 THz-10 THz) with massive spectrum resources is recognized as a promising candidate for future rate-greedy applications, such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for realizing 100 Gb/s data rate and beyond, which have greatly promoted the progress of the 6G research. In this article, we give technical insight into the key technologies of optoelectronic terahertz communications with high data rates in the physical layer, including approaches of broadband devices, baseband signal processing technologies, and design of advanced transmission system architectures. A multicarrier signal processing routine with high noise tolerance is proposed and experimentally verified in a 500 Gb/s net rate terahertz communication system. Finally, we discuss the future directions of optoelectronic terahertz technologies toward the target of terabit- scale communications.

Abstract:The recently reported high spectral efficiency (SE) and high-baud-rate signal transmission are all based on digital coherent optical communications and digital signal processing (DSP). DSP simplifies the reception of advanced modulation formats and also enables the major electrical and optical impairments to be processed and compensated in the digital domain, at the transmitter or receiver side. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on high-speed signal generation and detection and also show the progress on DSP for high-speed signal detection. We also report the latest progress on multi-core and multi-mode multiplexing.

Abstract:Recently,wireless communication capacity has been witnessing unprecedented growth.Benefits from the optoelectronic components with large bandwidth,photonics-assisted terahertz[THz]communication links have been extensively devel-oped to accommodate the upcoming wireless transmission with a high data rate.However,limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio and THz component bandwidth,single-lane transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate using a single pair of THz transceivers is still very challenging.In this study,a multicarrier THz photonic wireless communication link in the 300 GHz band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Enabled by subcarrier multiplexing,spectrally efficient modu-lation format,well-tailored digital signal processing routine,and broadband THz transceivers,a line rate of 72 Gbit/s over a wireless distance of 30 m is successfully demonstrated,resulting in a total net transmission capacity of up to 202.5 Gbit/s.The single-lane transmission of beyond 200 Gbit/s overall data rate with a single pair of transceivers at 300 GHz is con-sidered a significant step toward a viable photonics-assisted solution for the next-generation information and communi-cation technology[ICT]infrastructure.

Abstract:We summarize several advanced modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. We show that multilevel 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM and 64QAM optical signals can be generated by commercial optical and electrical devices. Employing these multilevel modulation formats, we have realized PDM-36QAM 64Tb/s signals transmission over 320km fiber. We also present some experimental results of 1Tb/s and 10Tb/s per channel signal transmission by advanced modulation formats.

Abstract:We summarize several novel schemes to generate multi-level modulation formats for high capacity transmission system with high spectral efficiency. We show that multi-level 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM (QAM: quatlrature amplitude modulation) optical signals can be generated by commercial optical and electrical devices. Employing these multilevel modulation formats, we have realized PDM-8QAM (PDM: polarization division multiplexing) 32 Tb/s and PDM-36QAM 64-Tb/s signals transmission over 580- and 320-km fibers, respectively.

Abstract:Employing spectrally efficient PolMux-RZ-8PSK modulation format and single-ended digital coherent detection technique, we demonstrate 8 times 114-Gb/s DWDM transmission over 640 km of SSMF on a 25-GHz grid with record spectral efficiency of 4.2 bit/s/Hz, utilizing no optical dispersion compensation or Raman amplification. We show that the distortion caused by the direct square-law detection of the signal component with single-ended photo detection can be effectively mitigated by a novel DSP algorithm.

Abstract:The optical fiber communication network is the important infrastructure for the modern information society. Thanks to the reduction of fiber loss, the improvement of transceiver devices by electro-optical-electrical conversion, the development of modulation technology and the introduction of digital signal processing, the capacity of optical fiber transmission has been greatly improved. In recent years, due to the large capacity demand of data-centers and the next-generation wireless communication, metro and short-range transmission scenarios below 100 km have attracted lots of attention based on direct detection. The historical evolution of optical fiber communication systems was firstly reviewed, then the limiting factors in the direct detection system were analyzed. Furthermore, the principle and system configuration of one-dimensional to four-dimensional self-coherent technology were introduced, and finally, the low-cost evolution trend of the optical coherent transmission system was prospected.

Abstract:In this paper, the recent progress on spectrally efficient single carrier (SC) 400G optical signal transmission was summarized. By using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 64QAM, we can realize transmission distance over 10000, 6000 and 3000 km, respectively, with large area fiber and all-Raman amplification. To improve the system performance and generate high-order QAM, advanced digital signal processing algorithms such as probabilistic shaping and look-up table pre-distortion are employed to improve the transmission performance.

The highest reported bit rates for single-carrier and multi-carrier approaches are 448Gbit/s with polarization-multiplexing 16QAM and 10Tb/s with polarization-multiplexing QPSK over 112 25-Gbaud OFDM subchannels, respectively.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.

Abstract:The traditional methods dealing with high-speed and high-dynamic range signal suffer poor synchronization and high BER.To solve these issues,this paper proposes three new methods that include digital CDR,parallel bit-synchronization and parallel error-tolerance frame-synchronization.A detailed presentation of the system is revealed.The testing results demonstrate that the system runs steadily and the synchronization recovery has been accomplished reliably.

Abstract:The growing demand for bandwidth requires the increasing of capacity and reach of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems, and simultaneous reducing of cost per bitxkm. In this report, I will at first introduce the 40 Gbit/s transponder and 40x42.8 Gbit/s WDM long-haul transmission experimental system over standard single mode fiber using all-Raman amplification in our laboratory. By optimizing the chirp of electro-absorption modulation and dispersion compensation, 42.8 Gbit/s NRZ transmission over 1200 km standard single mode fiber was achieved. Then our work about the fiber impairments in Nx40 Gbit/s WDM and polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) system will be reviewed. Also the technique to mitigate the impairment will be described. In particular, Electronic equalization used to overcome the distortion caused by inter-symbol interference (ISI) will be reviewed, and its capability of equalization for intra-channel nonlinearity will be discussed.
