Abstract:This paper concerns the initial boundary value problem of three-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible liquid crystal flows with density-dependent viscosity. When the viscosity coefficient $\mu(\rho)$ is a power function of the density with the power larger than $1$, that is $\mu(\rho)=\mu\rho^\alpha$ with $\alpha>1$, it is proved that the system exists a unique global strong solution as long as the initial density is sufficiently large and $L^3$-norm of the derivative of the initial director is sufficiently small. This is the first result concerning the global strong solution for three-dimensional inhomogeneous liquid crystal flows without smallness of velocity.

Abstract:This paper considers the inhomogeneous biaxial nematic liquid crystal flow in a smooth bounded domain Ω⊂R2 , where the velocity u and the orthogonal unit vector fields (m,n) admit the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary condition, respectively. By applying piecewise estimate and continuity method, we get the global existence of strong solutions, provided that the basic energy is suitably small. Our result may be regarded as an extension and improvement of Gong-Lin (2022) and Li-Liu-Zhong (2017) to the Neumann boundary condition, where the initial vacuum is allowed. Some new techniques are developed in order to deal with integral estimates caused by the boundary condition, and more complicated model.

Abstract:We investigate compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three-dimensional (3D) bounded domains with slip boundary condition for velocity and Neumann boundary condition for orientation field. By applying piecewise-estimate method and delicate analysis based on the effective viscous flux and vorticity, we derive the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial total energy is suitably small. Our result is an extension of the works of Huang-Wang-Wen (J. Differential Equations 252: 2222-2265, 2012) and Li-Xu-Zhang (J. Math. Fluid Mech. 20: 2105-2145, 2018), where the local strong solutions in three dimensions and the global strong solutions for 3D Cauchy problem were established, respectively. Moreover, it also shows that blow up mechanism for local strong solutions obtained by Huang-Wang-Wen (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 204: 285-311, 2012) cannot occur if the initial total energy is sufficiently small.

Abstract:We consider a full Navier-Stokes and $Q$-tensor system for incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In the two dimensional periodic case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions that are uniformly bounded in time. This result is obtained without any smallness assumption on the physical parameter $\xi$ that measures the ratio between tumbling and aligning effects of a shear flow exerting over the liquid crystal directors. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of asymptotic limit for each global strong solution as time goes to infinity and provide an uniform estimate on the convergence rate.

Abstract:For the vacuum free boundary problem of the one-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations with the density dependent viscosity coefficient and gravity force, the global existence of the strong solution is proved, which is shown to converge to the steady solution with the same total mass when the initial datum is a small perturbation of the steady solution only at the basic level. The key is to establish the global-in-time regularity uniformly up to the vacuum boundary, which ensures the large time asymptotic uniform convergence of the evolving vacuum boundary, density and velocity to those of the steady solution with detailed convergence rates. Compared with previous studies, the novelty of this paper is the regularity of global solutions for the vacuum free boundary problems in viscous compressible fluids when the viscosity coefficient is not constant but degenerate.

Abstract:In two space dimension, we show that the steady state the solution of fluid/particle system may tend to after a long time is completely determined by the initial total momentum. Based on this observation, we prove the global-in-time existence of the classical solutions for arbitrary initial data to the system that couples the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation. By linearized method and Littlewood-Paley analysis, the exponential rate of the convergence toward steady state is obtained under some specific assumptions.

Abstract:The Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional compressible flow of nematic liquid crystals is considered. Existence and uniqueness of the global strong solution are established in critical Besov spaces provided that the initial datum is close to an equilibrium state $(1,{\bf 0}, \hat{{\bf d}})$ with a constant vector $\hat{{\bf d}}\in S^2$. The existence of global‐in‐time strong solutions is proved when the initial energy is suitably small or the lower bound of the viscosity coefficient is large enough. Moreover, some exponential decay‐in‐time rates of strong solutions are obtained via time‐weighted a priori estimates.
