Abstract:This paper concerns the initial boundary value problem of three-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible liquid crystal flows with density-dependent viscosity. When the viscosity coefficient $\mu(\rho)$ is a power function of the density with the power larger than $1$, that is $\mu(\rho)=\mu\rho^\alpha$ with $\alpha>1$, it is proved that the system exists a unique global strong solution as long as the initial density is sufficiently large and $L^3$-norm of the derivative of the initial director is sufficiently small. This is the first result concerning the global strong solution for three-dimensional inhomogeneous liquid crystal flows without smallness of velocity.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the three dimensional general Ericksen-Leslie (E-L) system with Ginzburg-Landau type approximation modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, by overcoming the difficulties from lack of maximum principle for the director equation and high order nonlinearities for the stress tensor, we prove existence of global-in-time weak solutions under physically meaningful boundary conditions and suitable assumptions on the Leslie coefficients, which ensures that the total energy of the E-L system is dissipated. Moreover, for the E-L system with periodic boundary conditions, we prove the local well-posedness of classical solutions under the so-called Parodi's relation and establish a blow-up criterion in terms of the temporal integral of both the maximum norm of the curl of the velocity field and the maximum norm of the gradient of the liquid crystal director field. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions are obtained under the condition that the product of $\|u_0\|_2+\|\nabla d_0\|_2$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_2+\|\nabla^2d_0\|_2$ is suitably small. This result can be viewed as a supplement to the local existence and blow up criteria discussed in \cite{Hong1}.

Abstract:We study dissipative solutions to a 3D simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system for liquid crystals with Ginzburg-Landau approximation. First, we establish a weak-strong stability principle, which leads to a suitable notion of dissipative solutions to the hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system. Then, we introduce a regularized system to approximate the original system, for which we can prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions. Finally, we prove that there is at least one dissipative solution for this simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system.

Abstract:We investigate compressible nematic liquid crystal flows in three-dimensional (3D) bounded domains with slip boundary condition for velocity and Neumann boundary condition for orientation field. By applying piecewise-estimate method and delicate analysis based on the effective viscous flux and vorticity, we derive the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions provided that the initial total energy is suitably small. Our result is an extension of the works of Huang-Wang-Wen (J. Differential Equations 252: 2222-2265, 2012) and Li-Xu-Zhang (J. Math. Fluid Mech. 20: 2105-2145, 2018), where the local strong solutions in three dimensions and the global strong solutions for 3D Cauchy problem were established, respectively. Moreover, it also shows that blow up mechanism for local strong solutions obtained by Huang-Wang-Wen (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 204: 285-311, 2012) cannot occur if the initial total energy is sufficiently small.

Abstract:By considering a general form of the Landau-Lifshitz equation under the influence of a homogeneous external magnetic fields, we prove that for a ferromagnetic body which occupies a bounded domain Ω in ℝ3 there exists a global weak solution either for the Dirichlet problem or for the Neumann problem. Although there is, in general, non-uniqueness result for the Landau-Lifshitz equation, the uniqueness result for the dynamic equation with constant initial data, which connects with the ground state of the magnetization in physical meanings, is pointed out.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystals in two dimensions are considered, and the existence of global strong solutions of the system is obtained in the article. Some nonlinear stress terms in the moment equations and transport terms in the director equations, together with the Dirichlet boundary condition, induce some difficulties in the analysis. We introduce an elliptic operator for such coupled system to overcome the problems.

Abstract:The Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional compressible flow of nematic liquid crystals is considered. Existence and uniqueness of the global strong solution are established in critical Besov spaces provided that the initial datum is close to an equilibrium state $(1,{\bf 0}, \hat{{\bf d}})$ with a constant vector $\hat{{\bf d}}\in S^2$. The global existence result is proved via the local well-posedness and uniform estimates for proper linearized systems with convective terms.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we aim to establish global existence of weak solutions with higher regularity to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations under no-slip boundary conditions. Though Lions\cite{L1} and Feireisl\cite{F1} have established global weak solutions with finite energy under Dirichelet boundary conditions by making use of so called effective viscous flux and oscillation defect measure,Hoff has investigated global weak solutions with higher regularity in \cite{H1,Hof2} when the domain is either whole space or half space with Navier-slip boundary conditions, yet the existence theory of global weak solution with higher regularity under Dirichlet boundary conditions remains unknown. In this paper we prove that the system will admit at least one global weak solutions with higher regularity as long as the initial energy is suitably small when the domain is a 2D solid disc. This is achieved by exploiting the structure of the exact Green function of the disc to decompose the effective viscous flux into three parts, which corresponds to the pressure term, boundary term and the remaining term respectively. In order to control the boundary term, one of the key observations is to use the geometry of the domain which sucessfully to bound the integral of the effective viscous flux where $L^1$ norm is always unbounded.

Abstract: In this paper we construct a family of exact strong solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible liquid crystal equations with finite energy. The initial velocity is chosen to be rotationally symmetric and the image of the initial orientation of the liquid crystal is a non-trivial curve on the unit sphere. It turns out that this family of initial data evolves globally in time by liquid crystal flow and may shrink to a single point as time goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the global existence of strong solutions for the 3D incompressible inhomogeneous viscoelastic system. We do not assume the "initial state" assumption and the "div-curl" structure inspired by the works [59,61]. It is a key to transform the original system into a suitable dissipative system by introducing a new effective tensor, which is useful to establish a series of energy estimates with appropriate time weights.
