A New Theoretical Model of Magnetic Interactions Between Spherical Paramagnetic Particles in Magnetorheological Fluids

Abstract:Modelling the magnetic interactions between paramagnetic particles can guide the preparation of magnetorheological materials and the development of corresponding devices. Solving Maxwell's equations to obtain an exact solution requires significant computational resources. Although the point dipole model with the mean magnetization approximation can be solved more efficiently, it lacks convincing physical significance and ignores particle boundaries. From the perspective of Ampere's molecular current theory, we proposed a new theoretical model, called the molecular current model, which takes into account particle boundaries and enables an efficient solution compared to the exact method. Subsequently, the effects of particle size, magnetic field strength, and particle permeability on magnetic interactions were studied. The results show that the magnetic force is proportional to the square of the particle diameter and the external magnetic field strength, respectively, while neither of them affects the model accuracy, which is dominated by the particle permeability. Furthermore, we found that the new model can provide a more reasonable and straightforward physical insight for calculating the magnetic interactions between hollow particles. Given that the core-shell particles can also improve sedimentation stability, we explored the impact of hollow radius and coating thickness on the yield stress and settling velocity of the two structural particles. The characteristics of these two low-sedimentation methods can be determined through direct numerical simulations, enabling optimization of parameters. Our model is equally instructive for calculating the magnetic interactions between non-spherical paramagnetic particles.
