Abstract:Aim. To our knowledge, there are very few papers on the aeroelastic tailoring of composite joined-wing aircraft, although it is key to the design of such aircraft. We now present an aeroelastic tailoring method that is different from those of Ref.2 by Weisshaar and Lee and Ref.3 by Guo et al. In the full paper, we explain our aeroelastic tailoring method in some detail. In this abstract, we just add some pertinent remarks to listing the two topics of explanation. The first topic is: the model of optimization design. The second topic is: the aeroelastic tailoring of composite joined-wing aircraft. In the second topic, the design is carried out in two steps: (1) in the first step, only static strength constraint is considered; (2) in the second step, both static strength constraint and aeroelastic constraint are considered. Finally we give two numerical examples. In the first example, for simplicity we take a clamped rectangular composite wing, whose calculated results are given in Tables 2 and 3 in the full paper, to verify the feasibility of our method. In the second example, we design the wing of a composite joined-wing aircraft. The calculated results are given in Table 4 in the full paper; in the first step of the tailoring design, the first-step final design of the joined-wing gives 131.8 m/s as flutter speed and 480.484 kg as weight of the joined-wing; in the second step of the design with both static strength constraint and aeroelastic constraint considered, the final design gives 160 m/s as flutter speed and 497.744 kg as weight of the joined-wing. In our calculations, we made use of the aeroelastic optimization module of MSC/Nastran software.
